About The Experience

Looking to explore the Chianti region of Tuscany with all the comforts of home and more? This accommodation in a Tuscany villa has it all, from a huge swimming pool to sprawling grounds and all the amenities indoors. One of the owners, who lives on the estate in the family villa, is American and she's furnished this holiday villa in Tuscany to American tastes. So relax! Lounge at this Tuscany vacation villa, take a refreshing bike ride to nearby Certaldo (we highly recommend exploring the Pretorio Palace), or take a day trip to Florence and beyond! There is another villa, Villa Sella, right next door (with its own pool), as well as two recently completed restored apartments, which share the pool with Villa Certaldo and the owners.

Location Description

The property is located four kilometers from Certaldo, which has all the necessities combined with small-town charm. Pick up groceries or eat out in the modern section and spend the rest of your day exploring Certaldo Alta, the old medieval village. In July, you may find yourself in the midst of a lively Renaissance festival, complete with street artists, actors, musicians, and more. And don't forget to get your fill of medieval architecture! You can explore the Pretorio Palace or marvel at the profile Certaldo castle cuts across the sky. Like museums? Visit the house of Giovanni Boccaccio (author of the Decameron). Day trips can take you to San Gimignano, Siena, and Florence. Pisa and Florence airports are easy arrival points where you can rent a car.

Exterior Description
(300,000 m2/3,229,173 ft2)

Enter the estate of this historic 14th century villa via a private gate and find yourself in a garden filled with cypress, pine, and oak trees. The historical significance of the estate is underlined by the fact that it was occupied during the month of July 1944 by German forces and used as a command post, and subsequently liberated by allied forces as the front passed through the region. Several underground WWII hideouts are still visible in the nature reserve woods of the estate. On the estate is a large shared swimming pool, open from early May to early October, (16m x 6m, 0.8-2m deep) surrounded by terra cotta decking, while over 35 lemon trees release refreshing scents into the air. From the garden, you'll look towards the medieval town of San Gimignano. Although the estate is shared, you have a private 100 m2 yard with garden furniture and a barbeque. You will also have a 60 m2 courtyard with lemon trees and a covered terrace overlooking vineyards and the valley. One third of the remaining land is a nature reserve—a wooded area inhabited by wild pheasants, rabbits, boar, and hedgehogs. Another part of the estate is used for olive tree cultivation, and there is also a resident horse that enjoys free grazing around an ancient Roman fresh water spring. Private parking is available within the property grounds.

Overall:
Overall our experience was positive.
Enjoyed Most:
We loved the tranquility. We had a marvelous view of the countryside from the porch, as well as from most of the windows. Villa Certaldo was spacious and perfect for the six of us.
Enjoyed Least:
The bathroom lighting was very dim.
Surrounding Area:
The villa is situated in the midst of olive groves and grape vines. It was very private and beautiful.
Nearby Events or Locales:
I don't think we were within walking distance of any small towns. A car is really necessary.
Tips or Restaurants:
The Coop store in Certaldo was a great place to purchase groceries, wine, etc. It was a great one-stop shopping center. The best dinner we had was in Greve at Ristorante Giovanni da Verrazano--fabulous food!!
Directions:
It really helps to have a GPS, especially in picking one's way to all the charming hill towns in Tuscany.

Overall:
Overall very good experience. This was our second stay at the villa.
Enjoyed Most:
Size of bedrooms and bathrooms and nice dining/living room area, plus terrace and working fireplace. Elizabeth was excellent about supplying wood for us as we used it every night. The new Coop in lower Certaldo is fabulous.
Enjoyed Least:
The stove is difficult to deal with - not gas and controls rather tricky. Most of us in the group enjoy cooking and prefer gas.
Surrounding Area:
Old Certaldo is lovely and museums interesting as well as the ceramics store. Nice to have a train in the town in which to get to Florence and Siena and other cities.
Directions:
We did use GPS and my husband remembered how to find the villas from last time; this was our second stay.
Check In Out:
Check in and check out were fine. No issues at all.
