About The Experience
Legend has it that this centuries-old farmhouse in Lazio was once used as a chapel by French pilgrims en route to Rome. Situated in the region of Lazio on the three-way border with Umbria and Tuscany, this self-catering accommodation has gorgeous landscaping and 360o views. Once owned by the local Contessa, this beautifully restored farmhouse is within day-trip range of some of the country's most famous cities. It is entirely possible to enjoy full days of touring in Rome or Florence, and still be “home” in time for dinner on the terrace and a good night’s sleep in the cool peace and quiet of the Italian countryside.
Location Description

The property is located five kilometers from Acquapendente, a thriving market town on the Cassia (the original Roman road); and six kilometers from the village of Torre Alfina in the heart of the Etruscan Highlands. Torre Alfina was recently named one of Italy’s 100 most beautiful villages. It is built around a castle that once belonged to the Monaldeschi and Bourbon del Monte families until it was purchased by Edoardo Cahen in 1880. The village has two restaurants, a grocery store, a butcher shop, a bakery, two cafés and a gelateria. Torre Alfina features a year-round and village-wide art exhibit, and an Annual Blues Festival. This property is ideal for nature lovers and history buffs because it borders the Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve, with its many bike and hiking trails, and the region is dotted with Etruscan caves, ruins and artifacts. It is within an hour of Mediterranean beaches, 15 minutes from the clear volcanic waters of Lake Bolsena, and within 45 minutes of several excellent thermal bath spas. The farmhouse is in a great central location, convenient to many of Italy's best kept secrets: Orvieto, Todi, Bolsena, Bagnoregio, Pienza, Montepulciano, Montalcino, Siena.

Nearby Attractions: Acquapendete (markets, restaurants), Torre Alfina (restaurants, markets, cafes, gelateria, annual festivals), Orvieto (train station), Lake Bolsena, Assisi, Siena.

Exterior Description
(Two acres)
Positioned on a large volcanic rock, this ancient stone farmhouse is set amongst perennial gardens, countless mature trees, natural terraces, and an orchard. The private outdoor terrace is covered in grape vines and furnished with a gas barbecue, a table that can seat up to 12 people, and lounge chairs. A new private swimming pool (12 m x 5 m, 1.5 m deep) is just 25 meters from the house. The pool is open May - October and heated up to 29 C. One of its three caves is used as a garden shed, another as a wine cellar under the house. Situated on a well-maintained gravel road, the farmhouse has a remote-control gate, and plenty of secure parking space. Please note that the owners live on the premises, but guests enjoy complete privacy, including an independent entrance and terrace and private gardens.

Customer Reviews

Overall:
Our overall experience was excellent. We found both the house and the property outstanding.
Enjoyed Most:
Our favorite feature of the property was the terrace...vine-covered and beautiful. We also very much appreciated the "Welcome Book" and basket left for us at the beginning of our stay.
Surrounding Area:
We traveled quite extensively in Italy while we were there, and needed "rest days" where we didn't want to travel too far from "home". The villa is located in an area with a number of interesting places to visit that weren't very far away.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Torre Alfina is the closest town, but not walkable.
Tips or Restaurants:
No, the villa provided an excellent "Welcome Book" - it includes advice for everything from restaurants, to local festivals, to history of the area, to the best places to purchase groceries or gelato! The house is stocked with books and maps, etc.
Directions:
We did not use a GPS. The directions given to us were excellent.
Check In Out:
The check in/out process was easy! And there were groceries provided to get us through the first couple of days.

Overall:
Our multigenerational family of eight spent three weeks at La Cappella on overlapping visits. For some, it was a first visit to Italy. Our goal was to introduce the family to as many wonderful Italian sights and experiences as possible. Roughly midway between Florence and Rome, and just off the A1 highway, La Cappella was the perfectly located base for a grand family "introduction to Italy" adventure. Though located in an oasis of tranquility, the villa's location made car trips to all the top places on our "must see" list feasible. For us, the villa was a perfect choice. We knew we were in for something special when, upon arrival, Jude and Richard offered glasses of cold Proseco while we were shown around the house and grounds. We arrived to find a carefully selected welcome basket of food and wine and a fridge stocked with the basics including homemade fig jam. The meticulously crafted detailed Welcome book that had been emailed to us prior to our trip was available in book form on our arrival at the villa.
Enjoyed Most:
La Cappella was idyllically located while enjoying all the modern amenities and almost within walking distance of local produce and a local trattoria. Ours is a family of cooks and we found the kitchen fully stocked for cooking and the grapevine covered pergola a blissful place to dine al fresco with a glass of wine after a day of sightseeing. While nearby Acquapendente was great for convenience items, we purchased organic meats, produce and handmade pasta at nearby farms and markets (all recommended in the, by now, indispensable Welcome book). We learned to carry "the book" in our car to guide us to local points of interest, trattorias, and on recommended day trips. The villa grounds were lushly awash with roses, hydrangeas and fruit trees. Our ten year old grandson loved picking the peaches and fresh figs! Jude and Richard's personal attention to our family went above and beyond anything we had ever experienced. Jude arranged for personal chef, Doriana, to prepare a Tuscan meal on our second evening at the villa. She arranged for hiking guide, Petra, to lead us on a day long hike through ancient Etruscan tunnels to the Tufo town of Sovana. Unforgettable! When we expressed an interest in walking the ancient Il Sassetto forest below Torre Alfina Castle, Jude and Richard guided us on a walk through the magnificent forest they obviously love. Our adventures included the picture book lovely vineyard dotted landscapes and wineries of the Chiantigiana Wine Trail between Siena and Florence, the town of Montalcino, and the Fosso Bianco wild thermal springs near Pienza in Val D'orcia.
Surrounding Area:
Easy day trips included Bagnoregio, Pitigliano, Sorano, the coastal Torba beach and the amazing intact Etruscan frescoed tombs at Tarquinia. Fascinating! An overnight road trip to Positano for a taste of the gorgeous Amalfi Coast, with a stop on the way for guided tours of Pompeii and Herculaneum, will always be remembered. Back home, all in the family have declared our Italian adventure to have been perfect! We could not have experienced Italy so fully had it not been for the incredible central location of La Cappella and the trip planning help and guest comfort that was afforded us. Unfortunately, there is not enough space here to list all the reasons we loved La Cappella. Our family gives it "two thumbs up"...way, way up!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Torre Alfina ..not within distance
Tips or Restaurants:
We enjoyed Da Cicco...a laid back local place right across the field from the villa.
Directions:
Yes. We used GPS. No problem.
Check In Out:
Everything was smooth and problem free! Jude and Richard greeted us with a glass of Prosecco

Quiet incredible view. Many areas close by that we could go for the day without a significant amount of driving.
