Exterior Description

This palazzo was constructed during the first half of the 14th century, at a time when Florence had begun to expand beyond the boundaries of the ancient Roman nucleus. It was commissioned by Messer Lapo, a member of the Aldobrandinis - a wealthy family who made their fortune in the spice business. At that time, via delle Belledonne was a main commercial artery leading out of the city - it connected the Mercato Vecchio (market square) and via Strozzi to the Porta del Trebbio, the city door that opens a path to the north. In the 19th century, the palazzo housed several painters' workshops, including that of the celebrated artist Ingres. The artists' need for light is probably the reason why most of the apartments have very large windows.

Customer Reviews

Fabulous. We had a wonderful time and fell in love with Florence. The apartment exceeded our expectations and was very beautiful. We also appreciated the coffee and other supplies that were left to help us get settled before we found the local shops and could purchase items for our stay.
Enjoyed Most:
It was meticulously clean. We also loved the location. It was so convenient to everything we wanted to see and to local shops and services we required. The air conditioning was a wonderful amenity also as the temperatures were very warm.
Enjoyed Least:
It was often noisy, especially in the early mornings when the garbage pickup and street cleaners came through.
Surrounding Area:
We loved the location of the apartment. There were lovely shops nearby - butcher, bakery, deli-store. And it was only a few minutes walk to the fresh food market that we loved. It was a pleasure to shop for food every day and come back to the apartment to prepare wonderful meals.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We took a day trip to Venice on the train that was wonderful. We also took a tour through Tuscany and to Pisa which was also fantastic.
Tips or Restaurants:
We would recommend shopping for fresh food at the Mercato Centrale as the selection was amazing and everyone so helpful. We also loved the pastries and bread at Forno Top - and the girls that work there were terrific! We would also recommend the Internet provider on Via delle Giglio. The shop also provides Fed Ex service and the manager was very very helpful with many things.
Check In Out:
Our contact person was just wonderful - very kind and helpful! We really appreciated his help and support.

It was a very nice place and very close to the Duomo and most important sights.
Tips or Restaurants:
Take shopping bags to the grocery stores, since the markets charge up to 1.5 Euros for the plastic bags.

It was a good property.
Enjoyed Most:
The location was perfect for us.
Enjoyed Least:
The beds were not the most comfortable. There was only enough toilet paper for a day or so and only enough soap for dishes and clothes for only several loads. I purchased and left some them for the next renter. The second bath could have a shelf or table in it, though the master bathroom did have both.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Food, bread and household shopping 1 block away. Lots of good places to just look around within a several block radius.
Tips or Restaurants:
Several good restaurants within a block or two. Trattoria Belle Donne, Ristorante Il Latini, Ristorante Icche C'e C'e.
