Nimes, home of denim fabric (as in “de Nimes”) is filled with museums, temples, a lovely garden, and a Roman amphitheater that seats 21,000. A thriving town filled with young people, Montpellier is best known for its university. Thanks to its lively population, the city boasts a variety of cafés and chic little shops. Arles is known for its impressive amphitheater (it seats 26,000) and the Roman baths at Thermes de la Troille, which are some of the largest. Important, too, is the city's connection to Van Gogh: Arles is last place that the artist painted before his suicide at the age of 37. Avignon is a beautiful medieval city with a perfectly preserved historic center. Rich in art and history, the city of the popes comes alive in July and early August during the Festival d'Avignon. Curious to know how the popes once lived? Visit the fortress-like Palais des Papes, the city's most dramatic monument. This is the perfect place to rent a French villa or apartment in Gard..
