Customer Reviews

Overall:
Our group of six people - three couples - were delighted with the experience of sharing this beautiful villa for a week.
Enjoyed Most:
Probably each of us enjoyed different things about the property. For me, it was the spacious 15th century stone house and guest house, tastefully modernized and furnished, that I fell in love with. I loved the garden with its pool and statues (so very Italian!) and being able to pick fresh tomatoes, basil and parsley for our pasta suppers.
Enjoyed Least:
No one had negative comments about the villa. The bathroom plumbing was sometimes a challenge but these are the adventures one expects when travelling. One couple commented that they would have preferred to be walking distance from a village for shopping, but we had two rented cars so this was not a serious issue.
Surrounding Area:
I loved being surrounded by the Tuscan hills with its neat rows of vineyards and olive orchards. We were there at harvest season so enjoyed watching the grape-pickers at work - and drinking the excellent local wines!
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town - a village really - was Pianella about 5 kms away.
Tips or Restaurants:
Having a car was essential - and a carefully programmed GPS! The nearest supermarkets are in Siena, only 30 mins away from the villa once you know your way back to the villa (or have a good GPS to guide you). There was quite a good restaurant in the village of Pianella and we found many excellent places to eat in the surrounding area on our various day trips. We would also highly recommend hiring a chef to prepare at least one typical Tuscan dinner. Stefano (recommended in the villa info) prepared us a delicious meal one night, leaving the kitchen spotless and some delectable leftovers in the fridge.
Directions:
We found the property without difficulty with the help of a GPS. Coordinates were provided.
Check In Out:
The owner of the villa was there to greet us on our arrival and show us around. When we left, the gardener (whom we had seen on several occasions during the week) saw to the checking-out process.

Overall:
We had a wonderful stay in Tuscany
Enjoyed Most:
The grounds were lovely and well cared for, well suited for great al fresco dining and large groups. The house was meticulously and immaculately clean.
Enjoyed Least:
Because we were stuck inside for 3 days because or rain, we didn't feel that the house flowed well. For example, there is not an inviting area to lounge in other than the kitchen. There was not a working fireplace in cold, rainy weather. In our opinion, the house was too full of knick knacks. The kitchen needs more pans, cutlery, wine glasses, etc. Better directions needed. Editor's Note: Kitchen equipment: 48 plates, 24 wine glasses, full set of utensils for 12 + extra, pots and pans for 12. The fireplace is usable; just need to ask the owner.
Surrounding Area:
If you don't mind a 20-minute drive from Siena, this is a lovely location. Central to both Chianti and Brunello wine regions. Away from the hustle and bustle, it was a serene location.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Pianella was the closest town, about 6 km from the farmhouse.
Tips or Restaurants:
We dined several evenings at Osteria alla Villa in Villa La Sesta, about 20 mins away. It was wonderful. We took the wine tour in Tuscany in Brunello and Chianti and it was well worth the investment. We took the cooking school at Casanova in Castello in Chianti. It too was a day well spent!
Check In Out:
Franco was a kind host. Very charming.

Margot, May

Overall:
Relaxing, rugged, total seclusion and privacy.
Enjoyed Most:
Intimacy.
Enjoyed Least:
It was a little difficult to find.
Surrounding Area:
Fresh air, seclusion.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Pianella was the closest town. no
Tips or Restaurants:
Loved the food and the friendliness at Il Ponte in Pianella.

Leslie, May

Overall:
Great.
Enjoyed Most:
The location.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing.
Surrounding Area:
Wine.
Tips or Restaurants:
Enjoy!

Philippe, August

Enjoyed Most:
15th century charm, large kitchen for spending time together.
Enjoyed Least:
Out of the way location.
Surrounding Area:
Everything about Tuscany scenery, food, people, villages.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring insect repellent for pool area and sweaters - warm during the day but very cool at night.

Katherine, October

Overall:
A bit of heaven in Tuscany!
Enjoyed Most:
The house is an amazing 15th century, restored mill. The grounds are superb and well kept by the gardener, who is an absolute charmer. He also takes care of the magnificent infinity pool which is in A-1 condition. The house itself is well appointed and comfortable.
Enjoyed Least:
A little bit remote, but under most circumstances, part of its charm
Surrounding Area:
Hundreds of typical Tuscany hills and valleys nearby. The extraordinary city of Siena is a 20 minute drive away. At least ten more old Medieval towns are within 90 minutes drive.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Pianella is about 6 miles away so it is a 6 or 7 minute drive. It is a very small village with two convenience stores and a fantastic bakery where you can get your daily fresh bread and superb homemade cookies.
Tips or Restaurants:
The house is well equipped except for the lack of a couple of good kitchen knives if you cook a lot as we do. The owner keeps a list of good restaurants in the kitchen and his suggestions are good.
Check In Out:
The owner was expecting us and he proved to be a charming, helpful man. He showed us how everything worked, answered all our questions and went on his way.

Claude, September

Overall:
We loved all the outdoor eating possibilities and the well equipped kitchen. The kitchen had more cooking utensils than I have in any of my homes.
Enjoyed Most:
The beauty of the pool area, privacy and the quiet. The friendly, humorous, efficient owner. We will return with our whole family if possible.
Enjoyed Least:
No dryer for clothes,;clothes line in October does not always guarantee dry clothes.
Surrounding Area:
The best dining experiences at the castle and the neighborhood winery. Located in the middle of the most beautiful part of the Chianti valley.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Lusignano was a small winery with a great restaurant. You could walk, but we always drove. We ate there 3 times.
Tips or Restaurants:
Extra wash clothes. I brought 6, but washer is not available for towels--so I could have used more.
Check In Out:
Our host was willing to meet us for an early departure. He was always on time.

S Cathy, October

Overall:
We had the most amazing, special vacation here! We traveled with two small children and hosted some relatives and friends during our stay. The house and area were so special. I hope to return again soon!
Enjoyed Most:
The grounds of the house are incredible! The pictures do not do this property justice. The house is located in a beautiful valley with extremely well-cared for grounds. As you lounge by the pool you overlook vineyards. Our kids loved the stream that ran through the property and all of our guests enjoyed the variety of outdoor eating venues. The owners were amazingly friendly, responsive and accommodating. The house is in wonderful condition with many thoughtful details. This is a great property!
Enjoyed Least:
The location has its positives and negatives. On a positive note, the remoteness of the house makes it truly special. You are in the middle of the beautiful Tuscan countryside, away from all bustle. On a less positive note, it took quite a bit of hilly driving to get anywhere. We found it took us longer than I had anticipated to reach other tourist destinations such as Florence, Montalcino, and Montepulciano all about an hour and a half drive. The house was well-situated for Siena, Radda and the southern Chianti region. If you hope to be visiting a lot of major cities outside of this immediate region, you need to anticipate drives over one hour. With that said, we found many beautiful villages and wineries closer to our home base and thoroughly enjoyed the beauty of the house and immediate vicinity.
Surrounding Area:
Every morning we took an outing to either a local village, castle, or winery followed by a nice lunch. We would then return to the house for an afternoon swim followed by dinner at the house. Some of our favorite outings included Siena, Radda, Castello Brolio, Monsanto winery, Montalcino, Volpaia winery, Badia Coltibuono, and Vignamaggio winery.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The house is located about halfway between Radda and Siena, approximately 20-30 minutes drive to each. Both are fabulous towns!
Tips or Restaurants:
Read the description for the bathrooms carefully. They are very accurate and the bathrooms are very nice, however in the main house you have 4 bedrooms and only 2 bathrooms located in the hall, 1 of which has a bath only and the other a shower. I was surprised that our guests did not seem to want to use the bath. We ended up having to share the shower more than I would have anticipated which made the bathroom situation more communal than ideal. The situation ended up working fine for us, but you should think through if it works for your party. The house has absolutely EVERYTHING! The guest house is also very nice. Favorite restaurants included: Badia Coltibuono, Le Vigne in Radda, and Poggio Antico in Montalcino.

Lori, July

Overall:
A beautiful, tranquil spot.
Enjoyed Most:
Great house for a large group as there were lots of rooms, dishes to prepare meals, tables to dine at (both inside and out) and a lovely pool.
Enjoyed Least:
No view of the Tuscan hills as it was in a small valley by a stream. Surrounding Area:
It is situated in the Chianti hills so good restaurants, vineyards and spectacular scenery nearby.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Lucignano, where there is a restaurant but no food stores. Pianella is the nearest town with amenities and is approximately 4km and you needed a car to get there.
Tips or Restaurants:
The owner who is charming and helpful has equipped the house very well and has a list of good restaurants in the area. He is also available by cell phone to help if needed.
Check In Out:
The owner and his wife were there and it was a great process.

Anne, June

Overall:
I would rent it again.
Enjoyed Most:
The house, guest house, and the grounds are absolutely beautiful. The owners have done a wonderful job with the grounds and the houses. The Kitchen was great for preparing dinners. Lots of room in the houses and grounds to be together or be alone as you like.
Enjoyed Least:
It sits down in a small valley so it does have a view of the surrounding Tuscan hills. And it is a bit remote from the closest store, but it is centrally located for touring the Tuscan hot spots.
Surrounding Area:
Being on the edge of the Chianti region was ideal. We enjoyed the back roads around our Villa location.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town that had a store, gas, etc... is in Pianella. it is about a 8-10 minute drive.
Check In Out:
It worked well.

Dan, May

Overall:
Highly recommend, but be sure you don't mind getting in your car.
Enjoyed Most:
The house and gardens are great. Bathrooms are new and very nice. Kitchen has everything, even a microwave. It is better than the pictures and better than I had expected. The best part is the old mill, which is a great place to enjoy an outside dinner. There is a grill next to the mill.
Enjoyed Least:
You must get in your car to go anywhere.
Surrounding Area:
It is a great central place in Tuscany. Be sure to visit Castle Brolio and eat at the restaurant on the way up the hill to the castle.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Pianella is the closest town, but we never stopped in it. It is not in walking distance. The closest cute town is Radda. Siena is very close. Be sure to go to the Coop in Siena on your first day. It is a big grocery store that has everything you could need. It is closed on Sunday, but open until 7 or 8 PM on Saturday.
Tips or Restaurants:
The house has everything. A flashlight is handy if you use the grill. Rentvillas gave us the name of a guide, Stella. She was great. info@stellasoldani.com. There is a good pizza place in Radda. Be sure to eat at the restaurant on the way up the hill to Brolio.

Overall:
We so enjoyed meeting the owners! They were so gracious and it is obvious that their villa is their home, too. It is lovely and well cared for and their choice of art and decor was so homey and inviting. we loved everything about our stay at this villa and would recommend it highly.
Enjoyed Most:
The peaceful, though fairly central location of the villa with it's gardens and pool. We also loved the beauty of the Tuscan interior and the tasteful art and decorating done by the owners.
Enjoyed Least:
No view....sigh....and one other thing....the outdoor dining patio is outside the guesthouse...it would be very nice to have the outdoor dining near the kitchen as we had to travel throught the kitchen and family room, outside and across the lawn to bring our meals to the patio. We would have eaten every meal outside if it had not been for this small inconvenience.
Surrounding Area:
Right from our villa we were surrounded by vineyards, hills, views, and a wonderful restaurant at the end of our road that was fabulous. we tool glorious walks and runs. Siena was only 20 minutes away...and this villas location was perfectly central to do day trips throughout Tuscany as well as Florence and Rome.
Nearby Events or Locales:
There was no small town within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
We ate at Solissimo at the end of our road...fabulous evening on the terrace overlooking the hills...gorgeous and within walking distance from villa and wonderfully prepared and presented food. Great wine too Another great place was the castle Brolio....restaurant was great.
Check In Out:
The owners made us feel so welcome upon our arrival. They were lovely, and they were at our villa bright and early on our departure to check us out and give us any directions we needed for travel to Florence.

Betsy, August

Enjoyed Most:
The pool, the location.
Enjoyed Least:
Some of the windows were missing screens.
Surrounding Area:
Proximity to Siena.

David, July

Overall:
Highly recommend it. We will seriously consider returning to this property for a longer stay. Tons of room. We were there with five people and easily could have accommodated another family.
Enjoyed Most:
Warm, gracious owners, total privacy, tastefully decorated house, several dining areas - inside and outdoors - to choose from. Wonderful Infinity pool, well kept grounds for our kids to roam. The owners raised their kids in this beautiful country home, which is evident from the warmth it exudes. Great guest house, too.
Enjoyed Least:
Needed to drive to get to nearest town, but NO complaints with the houses and properties themselves.
Surrounding Area:
Picturesque countryside in the heart of the Chianti region, fabulous food and wine, very friendly habitants and everywhere we went was kid-friendly, as well.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Pianella no, not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Try to precisely map out routes to Siena and the various castles, or you will waste a great deal of time getting lost, although the scenery is always beautiful. Try to reserve a car with automatic transmission. Osteria de Castello is a must - looks expensive at first blush, until you see what you get for your money.
Directions:
Although getting there you feel you are in the middle of nowhere, directions were exact and perfect. Essential to have one good map reader and someone with a sense of direction along for this trip.
Check In Out:
Owners greeted us with a bottle of wine and basket of fruit, plus fridge stocked with water, spent substantial time showing us around the property, then helping with directions and plans.

Dawn, July

Overall:
The house was so nice and Franco and Anna met us there to make sure all was well. They are truly special people with an incredible home to share with us. I thank them dearly.
Enjoyed Most:
First of all the photos do not do it justice!! The grounds were beautiful. The rushing river gave a peaceful feeling all 24 hours. Loved the outdoor covered eating area and the lush garden with herbs and roses everywhere. The kitchen was pretty well equipped. considering and the fridge was huge . The pool was wonderful!! The guest house great as well. I liked the loft area, it had the best view to fall asleep and wake up to, except it was a steep up and down.
Enjoyed Least:
The washing machine. Not what Americans are use to and does only a few items that take a few hours to wash. The oven may need to be regulated for accurate temperature.
Surrounding Area:
Lucignano at the top of the hill is a private residence that has a wonderful restaurant. The countryside was incredibly beautiful this time of year. Great little vineyards. The place is 5 minutes from Pianella and 15 from Siena. Can't beat that.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Pianella, not within walking distance, but 5 minutes by car.
Tips or Restaurants:
Cell phones do not work at the house and in general we all had difficulty with cell phone service over there, whether we bought the phone upon arrival, had one from before and bought minutes or even used the one from the states. Take a calling card to use the phone. Washcloths!! Salad spinner!! Tupperware.

Joan, June

Overall:
This property was even better than I had hoped it would be.
Enjoyed Most:
The beautiful and private setting. The house and property were truly gorgeous and peaceful, a wonderful change from the busy towns and cities. When at the property we all felt like we were living at a wonderful home - not just stopping at a hotel or inn. We loved that the property was somewhat out-of-the-way, particularly since we could get to Radda in Chianti, which has great shops and resturants, in 20 minutes. The pheasants and stream running through the property more than made up for the lack of a hilltop view.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing of any importance. About the only thing missing that might have been nice was if the property was within walking distance of the town - however, I personally would not trade this for the serene and peaceful setting that the house enjoys.
Surrounding Area:
Of course it was incredibly beautiful. But I really liked the fact that it was not very 'developed' for tourists.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Saturday market in Radda in Chianti. Rampini pottery on the road to Radda. Arranging a cooking class/meal at the house with Matisse Chefservice.
Tips or Restaurants:
There is a wonderful market with a butcher in Radda - 'Porciatti'. An incredible resturant in Villa a Sesta, called 'La Bottega del 30' - absolutely do not miss this resturant, but find it in the daylight, because you will never find it at night.

Susan, October

Overall:
The place is beautiful and unique. The old mill core of the house has the weathered stone floor and original bread oven - all the lovely romantic details which we were hoping for. And still the house is perfectly up to date. Well equipped and comfortable in every detail.
Enjoyed Most:
The whole setting. The pool was a perfect al fresco dining area.
Enjoyed Least:
Our only complaint - it was a 10-15 minute drive to everywhere. We had hopes of being able to walk into a small village.
Surrounding Area:
Chianti!! We were in the midst of some perfectly gorgeous scenery. Great vineyards to explore.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Great vinyards to explore. Siena is only 20 minutes - fun place to spend a day.
Tips or Restaurants:
The restaurant at the Castilo de Brolio - fabulous! We also had a lot of fun cooking in that great kitchen.

Lee, June

Overall:
We loved the Villa. It is in a charming rural setting. There is a great pool. It is clean, well furnished, and everything works. There are a lot of nice little touches. You feel at home there almost immediately. The villa has a lovely patio for eating outside.
Enjoyed Most:
It is hard to pick one thing. Just the overall feeling of a well cared for property.
Surrounding Area:
The Villa is in the heart of Chianti's wine and olive country. Very picturesque.
Nearby Events or Locales:
It is just northeast of Siena with the walled medeival city. There is also a castle up the road aways.
Tips or Restaurants:
Make sure to find the grocey store called the Coop in Siena. Large, modern store with fresh seafood. The Villa has a lovely patio for eating outside.

John, June

Overall:
The property is a renovated mill - it was more beautiful than represented on the website. Very clean, spacious and the fireplace and pool were a plus. We could have not been more pleased with the home and especially the owner, Franco.
Enjoyed Most:
The country setting and the house.
Enjoyed Least:
It was somewhat isolated - but what is an Italian villa supposed to be!
Surrounding Area:
The vineyards and proximity to Siena and other small towns.

November

Overall:
The house was ideal for a relaxing week in Tuscany. Quiet and away from the towns, yet easily accessable.
Enjoyed Most:
Well kept and comfortable. The area surrounding the villa was exactly what you would expect for the Italian countryside, complete with vineyards.

Bruce, October

Enjoyed Most:
The setting was delightful, in a little valley with a bubbling stream. At night, we opened the windows and slept to the sound of the stream, frogs and crickets. You can't believe the number of stars! To eat in kitchen was delightful! We never bothered to use the dining room. Later in the year, I would assume that the covered barbecue area would be very popular. The place was decorated in a very charming manner. Wonderful use of color! And for those of us who were exploring Tuscany and Umbria - the location was perfect. Don't miss Montipuciano and San Gimignano! The recommendation to use Italia Roadrunners to plan our day trips was very helpful.
Enjoyed Least:
If the property could have been transported to a hilltop with a view, it would have been perfect.

May

Overall:
My reaction was extremely positive. It was our first experience in renting a house sight unseen for a vacation, and I was a bit apprehensive. However, it exceeded in every way what we had hoped for. The house was as advertised, but the pictures and descriptions did not do its beauty and tranquility justice! The owners of the house were extremely helpful and friendly, and generally a pleasure to see on the occasions when you do. The views were great, being surrounded by grapevines and fields. There are no broad, open vistas immediately from the house, which is fine, since it gives a sense of a great deal of privacy, and truly does not feel "closed in" in any way. Everything we needed was there (which didn't stop us from bringing things we didn't need). It's a very tastefully restored place and it doesn't take long to start thinking of it as "home". It is peaceful and inviting, places with plenty of light and sunshine and shady places to hide in the heat of the day. Great to have so many choices of places to have your meals (e.g., by the pool, in the dining room, in the kitchen, on the patio, on the "roofed" patio....)
Enjoyed Most:
Renting a place thousands of miles from home sight unseen from a company you know nothing about except from the Internet can be a scary prospect. In my case it worked out even better than my fondest hopes, and I will not hesitate to use Rentals In Italy again.
Surrounding Area:
The surrounding area was very quiet, just as I wanted. The nearest stores were about 5-6 km away (though I am a poor judge of distance), and seemed to have enough to get us through, though they were not very large. It hardly seemed to matter, since on our day trips to various locations we were able to pick up things we didn't think were available there. The locals were polite, and, as most Europeans are in American eyes, more reserved than your average American. However, they were extremely helpful when you asked questions.

November

Overall:
The property was wonderful and met our expectations. The entire area was beautiful and finding our way around was easy. Everything was perfect. Good restaurants in Siena.
