Customer Reviews

Overall:
Very unique and attractive.
Enjoyed Most:
History, landscape, vistas and helpful staff.
Surrounding Area:
Fantastic!
Nearby Events or Locales:
No, it was not but it was just a 10-minute drive. Good stores, restaurants, etc
Tips or Restaurants:
Restaurant Dello was good.
Directions:
It work well with the address
Check In Out:
Could not have been better.

Jorge, September

Overall:
A great joy to be embraced by beautiful and abundant nature!
Enjoyed Most:
The view, the quietness and connecting to history by living comfortably in a well-furnished old building.
Enjoyed Least:
As it is an old building without modern sound proofing, steps from neighbors upstairs can be heard from time to time. Not really a big problem.
Surrounding Area:
Full of olive trees and vineyards - the essential ingredients of Italian daily food - simply idyllic and picturesque!
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano. Too far to walk.
Tips or Restaurants:
Note that some small apartments don't come with washing machines. The office recommends a restaurant called "Nello" in San Casciano; it's indeed very good. It is better to make reservations before going.
Directions:
The directions were good. We used a GPS, too.

Tsui-hua, September

Overall:
Wonderful! The staff was very helpful and was able to communicate to us in English.
Enjoyed Most:
The view was extraordinary. We can't believe that we woke up to it every morning.
Enjoyed Least:
There was a slight road noise, since the highway was at the bottom of the hill.
Surrounding Area:
The small towns close by were enchanting to walk through and enjoy a gelato.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town was about 3 km away. It would be better to take a car given the hills and highway used to get here.
Tips or Restaurants:
The wine tasting was worth it. Jillian was very knowledgable about the area and about the wine.
Directions:
We used a GPS which was extremely helpful in navigating the area.

Leanne, September

Overall:
We loved it here! The staff were so helpful and the grounds were stunning. The pool area was lovely, lots of space, decent privacy (we could hear the family in the room next to us). The views were spectacular and the location was perfect as we could drive to many parts of Tuscany within half hour or an hour.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, views, peacefulness of the property, and pool.
Enjoyed Least:
Unfortunately, there were no screens on the windows and no air conditioning, so we had to choose between having a really warm bedroom or having a lot of mosquitos and bugs!
Surrounding Area:
Close to everything! You definitely need a rental car (and highly recommend a GPS as the roads are difficult to navigate!), but we were able to drive to Lucca, San Gimignano, Florence, Pisa, and Montalcino all within easy day trips.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The smallest town was Bargino, which was right at the base of the long hill up to where the villa stands. It had a small grocery store and delicious restaurant! Within a 10 minute drive was a bigger town.
Tips or Restaurants:
We brought a GPS and that was our lifesaver. The small restaurant in Bargino (Trattoria da Bule) is absolutely lovely. It's worth the drive to Greve in Chianti as well as Panzano to visit 'the butcher of Tuscany' - so much fun! We had SUCH a great week here and were sad to say good bye!
Directions:
We used a GPS and it got us there easily.
Check In Out:
No issues at all with either checking in or out. The staff were accommodating and helpful in every way.

Ali, June

Overall:
Overall our visit was very pleasant. The staff was attentive and the property well maintained. The daily drive up and down the mountain to the villa was most exciting. The property served as an excellent focal point for our daily outings.
Enjoyed Most:
Its central location and the ease with which we could come and go.
Enjoyed Least:
The unit we had is not really conducive to a prolonged stay. We were there for two weeks and could have used a larger kitchen and extra rooms.
Surrounding Area:
The views were magnificent. The towns were most interesting and the local food and wine outstanding. We got what we were seeking which was a real earthy experience with the people the way they are.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Our nearest town was Borgino. While you could walk to it I don't recommend it. It would be too easy to become a hood ornament on one of the cars, trucks, or motor scooters that go whizzing by.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring bug spray. This area of Tuscany is home to many mosquitos and if you sleep with the windows open you pay a heavy price.
Directions:
We used our Garmin supplemented by Google and had absolutely no problem coming from Rome.
Check In Out:
The reception staff was efficient and polite. Everything went smoothly. They even found me a rolling pin so I could make pasta in the apartment.

Robert, October

Overall:
The reception staff were exceptional in giving us ideas of where to eat, visit, and how to get there.
Enjoyed Most:
The pool area
Enjoyed Least:
The bathroom. It wasn't particularly clean on our arrival, the drains were blocked, and it was tiny.
Surrounding Area:
What is not to love? The scenery is picturebook and there is loads to see and do.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano - no.
Tips or Restaurants:
Il Fedino in Can Casciano is a great restaurant with super views. We were also amazed at the selection of produce available at the local supermarket - Coop.
Directions:
We used the physical address in our GPS.
Check In Out:
Very helpful staff.

Bianca, July

Overall:
It was wonderful--better than expected!
Enjoyed Most:
The grounds and room were beautiful.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing.
Surrounding Area:
It was close to so many towns--great central location to be in Florence.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano
Tips or Restaurants:
There is an excellent restaurant in Montefiridolfi--reservations are needed.
Directions:
We did not use GPS--but if you drive in Italy we suggest GPS!!
Check In Out:
Went very smoothly.

Cheryl, June

Overall:
Very restful and relaxing.
Enjoyed Most:
The convenience of the main roads to Florence and Siena, yet it could have been miles from anywhere. The pool - fantastic!
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano - 5 minutes by car.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring pool towels. The Bule restaurant - 4 minutes away - looks like nothing from the outside, but lovely inside and great food.

Joanne, June

Enjoyed Most:
Location. It was close to Florence without the hustle and bustle. The surrounding small towns were quaint and charming and enjoyable to visit. Also, the prices were more reasonable than Florence. The reception staff was very knowledgeable and helpful and spoke good English.
Enjoyed Least:
The kitchen could have been larger and better furnished. The stove had only two burners and no oven.
Surrounding Area:
The natural beauty, grape vines, olive trees, the Tuscan hills and sunsets.
Tips or Restaurants:
You might consider renting a cell phone, since the nearest phone booths are about 7 miles away. the Internet cafes were closed on Sundays and no Internet at the villa. If renting a car it is certainly helpful to know some Italian, as road signs are in Italian, and can be quite confusing, as all towns have many one-way streets, and extremely hard to maneuver once you make a wrong turn. One might consider renting a GPS.

Maurice, September

Overall:
Overall, we were very impressed and would definitely come back. It was our honeymoon and the Machiavelli 2 apartment was perfect. My wife said I did a good job!!
Enjoyed Most:
The tranquility of the location along with the history of the castle. It was very serene and peaceful. After a day in Florence or Venice, it was nice to have this within easy driving distance of Florence, to come home to peace and quiet. The landscaping and upkeep were obviously carefully attended to. The views out our windows were magnificent. Everyone made us feel very welcome and were very helpful!! Also, Bruna, does a great massage and was very informative.
Enjoyed Least:
Not a big thing, but the shower in our bathroom would not maintain a constant temperature. It was either very cold, or very hot. When we had neighbors in our building, it was somewhat disturbing, as their apartment was not very soundproof. It would have been nice to have had a maid visit at mid-week to change sheets, bring soap etc. I guess we Americans are spoiled, but clean sheets would have been nice on Wednesday.
Surrounding Area:
The surrounding area was a big plus. We loved the countryside. Just driving and getting lost, soaking up the flavor of the small villages. Mamma Rosa's restaurant in Calzione at the base of the hill is a must. The fall was a perfect time, as the weather was great, coolish 60-70 degrees and many sunny days. The people, the countryside, the food were all wonderful, we had to keep pinching ourselves as the panoramas unfolded around and over each hill on our long country drives.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Calzione at the base was the nearest within walking distance if you want to scale the steep hill on the way back to the Castello. San Casciano was an easy 10 minute drive and it was a larger community with a complete supermarket, COOP. Also there was an Internet cafe in this quaint community.
Tips or Restaurants:
Mamma Rosa's in Calzione the first night quickly indoctrinated us to the delicious food and there were several good places in San Casciano. We picked up things to fix in our own kitchen which helped economize, and it was fun to fix our own spaghetti, etc. Bring an extra bar of soap as they didn't supply much. Having the coffee there and sugar was nice.

Frank, October

Overall:
Staff very friendly, and also discreet. Hardly saw the other guests on the property. Simply beautiful.
Enjoyed Most:
The tasteful manner in which it is clearly an old property - 700-1000 years old - and has been restored to include all conveniences, yet retain it's original charm. It's location just south of Florence was absolutely perfect.
Enjoyed Least:
Occasional traffic noise from the nearby highway.
Surrounding Area:
The wine, the food, the peace and quiet....the views, absolutely stunning.
Tips or Restaurants:
Stop at a supermarket and pick up some milk, coffe, tea etc. Other than that, all the small towns in the area - 10-30 minutes drive away - all have many fantastic restaurants. Really, take your pick with any!
Directions:
Use of a car is essential in Tuscany.
