Customer Reviews

Overall:
Very nice.
Enjoyed Most:
The quietness and being in the country.
Enjoyed Least:
Too many steps up to apartment and in our apartment we had to go upstairs to the use restroom, which wasn't terrible except the steps were so steep. Not good for anyone with mobility issues. The kitchen was a little small.
Surrounding Area:
The views and quietness.
Nearby Events or Locales:
3 miles, but was not walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Not really, we went to other hilltop towns everyday.
Directions:
We used a GPS. Some of the road washed out for one day while we were there, so we had to go a different direction.
Check In Out:
It was great and the staff people there were always very helpful.

Marty, October

Overall:
We had a wonderfully, relaxing time while at the villa. We slept well and ate well. We were very sad to leave at the end of the week.
Enjoyed Most:
The living areas were spacious and were well lit by the sun shining through the windows.
Enjoyed Least:
The steep steps would be difficult for some people to manage.
Surrounding Area:
The private courtyard in the castle; there was no wedding reception during our stay. Walking amongst the olive trees and the rosemary-covered walls throughout the property.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We walked up the road between the olive groves and grape vines to a small town, but I don't recall the name. Other than that, we drove to all other towns in the area.
Tips or Restaurants:
We followed the recommended list provided by RentVillas and had most things we needed for our apartment. There was a hairdryer supplied everywhere we stayed in Italy, so don't bother packing one. The Internet service was adequate for our needs. If you do not have a washer/dryer in your unit, there is a laundry facility in San Casciano that has coin operated machines that provide soap and fabric softener. BYO laundry soap, just in case. The COOP at Viale Europa 20, in San Casciano is easy to get to by car for any grocery needs. Our favorite restaurants were Ristorante la Mangiatoia in San Gimignano, Da Giulio in Lucca, Ristorante il Santo Graal in Firenze - Altarno.
Directions:
Rent a car prior to arriving at the property. We didn't realize how difficult it would be to take a bus back into Firenze. We purchased maps for our GPS in the US prior to leaving. The GPS provided easy access to the Chianti back roads without fear of getting lost.
Check In Out:
The staff was amazing and very helpful. We had difficulty arranging transportation from Firenze to the property (arrived on Saturday and our car rental did start until Monday) and they went out of their way to assist us.

Lorraine, October

Overall:
Was a very pleasant experience. Quite relaxing. The place has great views and sunsets.
Enjoyed Most:
Very nice setting, property was very well kept.
Enjoyed Least:
The road to the property and the switch backs to get there. But once you were there, it's a wonderful place.
Surrounding Area:
Close to Florence and many other smaller towns. Great views.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino. But not a lot there. San Casciano was the place to go for groceries and restaurants etc. Not within walking distance. Down the hill and then up the hill. But you could see it from our bedroom window!
Tips or Restaurants:
Cinque di Vino is great restaurant in San Casciano. They took the time to explain the menu and the food and wine were fantastic!!!
Directions:
No trouble finding the property. The road to the property should be mentioned so that people are aware of the switchbacks. You do not want to stall in the middle of a switchback as I did. Kinda hard to get going again.
Check In Out:
Check in and out was great! The staff explained everything we needed to know without asking.

James, September

Overall:
A beautiful location with an atmosphere that substantially added to our visit to the region.
Enjoyed Most:
Its appearance.
Enjoyed Least:
The climb.
Surrounding Area:
The countryside.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano. Not walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
We actually enjoyed buying local foods and cooking our own dimner for a couple of nights. This place is too nice to simply serve as a departure location and a place to sleep. Plan some time to stay on site.
Directions:
The only way there is to drive. Rent a GPS! There is so much to see off of the beaten path.
Check In Out:
The staff are wonderful!

David, September

Overall:
It was an experience of a lifetime with breathtaking views. I want to go back and I've only been home for a week!
Enjoyed Most:
The beauty and the views; the old buildings; the pool overlooking the beauty. The property is very well located.
Enjoyed Least:
We only had 1 problem: On the 5 th day we had no running water for several hours but the staff was very willing to give us a different apt if it did not resolve by mid-day, which it did. It turns out we were at the highest point and the locals were doing road work but never informed the staff. Again, it was only a minor inconvenience.
Surrounding Area:
It was truly beautiful. I never saw so many olive trees and grapes; the vistas were endless. Saw hot air balloons--want to try it sometime.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town, but extremely small, was Borgino. The next town that was excellent was San Casciano. They were not within walking distance but we had a car and it didn't matter; the car allowed us to explore many towns and crazy roads.
Tips or Restaurants:
The suggestions the staff made were excellent. They have a booklet with lots of suggestions and places to go. They will reserve anything you need. They spoke great English and were very, very accommodating. What to bring: bring bug spray, and the basics. They provide pool towels and room towels, blankets, sheets and pillows.
Directions:
You for sure need a GPS. Would not go without one. maps were pretty easy and again the staff were great. If all else fails ask the locals, who try very hard to help even if they only speak Italian, and you often find someone who can speak English.
Check In Out:
Please send me back! Would love to win a trip. But will start saving now for next trip.

Maryanne, September

Overall:
We loved our time at Machiavelli Castello. Wish it could have been even longer. We were there from Monday afternoon through Saturday morning and it was just lovely. It was very hot that week and we were unable to really enjoy just sitting outdoors in the chairs, but the first night we got there in time to lie in the hammock. Always got back home too late to get into that wonderful pool before the mosquitoes came out. )
Enjoyed Most:
The views were amazing from the windows. The folks working there were so friendly and helpful. It was private and there was lots of room to move around in the castle.
Enjoyed Least:
The mosquitoes were a real problem for me. It would have helped tremendously to have screens on the bedroom windows. When we opened them at night, even though we had the VAPE plugged in, we were bitten quite a bit by the mosquitoes while there.
Surrounding Area:
We went to Florence and loved that. Enjoyed several walking tours there. We drove into San Casciano as well and ate dinner in a small restaurant. We also visited San Gimignano, Siena, Montepulciano, and Cinque Terre from our base at Machievelli Castello. We loved it all, but Montepulciano was our very favorite medieval city. Just loved the time spent there.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town was Montefiridolfi I believe. Bargino and San Casciano were close too. Montefiridolfi might have been within walking distance but we didn't walk it. I would strongly suggest you have a car while staying at Machievelli.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a good mosquitoe repellant! The restaurant Godimento DiVino in Montepulciano was fantastic. May have been one of the best meals we had on our three week tour of Italy. The service was wonderful and the ambiance great as we ate outside on the street. The weather was wonderful and we could hear the Italian children playing in the yard nearby and the grandparents chatting and the birds singing and life just happening in Montepulciano all around us during dinner. It was a delightful evening I shall never forget.
Directions:
We found our way easily following the directions our RentVillas Travel Advisor sent to Rick, our travel agent. We did not use a GPS per se, but at times did use our IPad's directional system to get around while exploring other places.
Check In Out:
The staff was wonderful and helpful. We had no problems checking in or out.

Joni, June

Overall:
The property offered a true Tuscan experience; views, atmosphere and location were great. It is a short distance from Florence so you get a peaceful retreat close to the city.
Enjoyed Most:
The views and the peace and quite. We drank wine in the courtyard and watched the sunset. It was exactly what I imagined.
Enjoyed Least:
We stayed in the castle and the bedroom and bathroom were up a rather steep set of stairs. While it did not bother us it might be a consideration for anyone with limited mobility.
Surrounding Area:
From the villa we traveled to Florence, Siena, Lucca, Volterra and San Gimignano; each location was more beautiful than the last. The villa provided easy access to all our destinations and was a wonderful place to return to in the evening.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Nothing is really within walking distance. But the local market is only a few miles away and Florence is close as well.
Tips or Restaurants:
We found the property very well maintained and even fire wood was provided. On the way back from Florence we found a great little road side stand selling fruit, veggies, cheese and even wine. It was one of our favorite stops!
Directions:
We used GPS but did have to walk around a bit to find the reception area. Not a big deal, they were wonderful when we did find them. If you buy wine or olive oil on the property you will need to pay in cash.
Check In Out:
Except for a bit of trouble finding reception everything was great for check in/out.

Leslie, May

Overall:
Fantastic. Photos can't really depict how beautiful the place is--both the property and the surrounding area are stunning.
Enjoyed Most:
Beautiful setting and view.
Surrounding Area:
Beautiful landscape, easy access to small towns and cities.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town was San Casciano, too far to walk, but just a 5 minute drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
GPS was indispensable.
Directions:
We used a GPS for our entire trip and it was a Godsend.

Kelly, April

Overall:
It was excellent. We loved our villa and the customer service was outstanding. I loved the fact that the property was so historic. The property in general is outstanding and the wine tasting was a wonderful experience.
Enjoyed Most:
The location was the best thing about the place as it is only 10 minutes from the city of Florence. The property offers perfect accommodations without the big crowds of tourists. Also, all of Tuscany is close by, like Siena, San Gimignano, and Volterra.
Enjoyed Least:
Everything was beautiful.
Surrounding Area:
The proximity to all of Tuscany. I enjoyed many wine tastings and olive oil tastings and, as I mentioned before, it is very very close to Florence
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano in Val' di Pesa
Directions:
The GPS found the property easily.

Marta, October

Overall:
Very good.
Enjoyed Most:
Location and history were great.
Enjoyed Least:
Lots of steps.
Surrounding Area:
Easy access to most areas in Chianti.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano is the nearest town; it is not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Make sure you can deal with lots of stairs. Il Poggio near San Casciano was a good restaurant.
Directions:
Used a GPS with coordinates.

Michael and Paula, October

Overall:
Very good.
Enjoyed Most:
Scenery and quiet.

Richard, September

Overall:
The perfect place for a honeymoon. We enjoyed going to the local market for fresh produce and goods. We loved waking up to the beautiful view from the castle window.
Enjoyed Most:
We loved the panoramic view and historic intricate architecture of the castle.
Enjoyed Least:
The inconsistency of the plumbing/water. It would only work sporadically, which was frustrating while bathing or cleaning dishes.
Surrounding Area:
The rolling hills covered by olive groves and grapevines. We also loved the quaint villages/towns in the surrounding Chianti region.

Andrew, September

Overall:
We love Tuscany so just being in Tuscany is great.
Enjoyed Most:
Being a castle.
Enjoyed Least:
1. No air conditioning; 2. The shower had intermittant water flow or low flow, so having a bath was a long exercise; 3. Lots of mosquitoes and no net protection for the bed. With the weather so hot you had to keep the windows open; 5. No bread toaster.
Surrounding Area:
Location was nice.
Tips or Restaurants:
Great local restaurant about 4km away. Will have to get back to you with the name.
Directions:
Used a UK purchased GPS, which is quite old, but it did find the address without problem.

Walley, August

Overall:
It was an amazing location with an amazing view. It actually exceeded any film version of Tuscany I've seen, and that is saying something. I have no serious criticisms of the property or of the management. They were wonderfully kind and patient with an American who spoke very little Italian and they were very eager to provide helpful information.
Enjoyed Most:
Unquestionably its beauty was its best feature, the ancient hunting lodge of the castello amid the tangled grape vines and silvered olive trees of Tuscany. Even the interior of the castello managed to retain the aura of history while also being remarkably comfortable.
Enjoyed Least:
The driveway and the stairs were both extremely difficult, primarily the last narrow scrape between the two outcropping stone walls. I was constantly afraid of scraping my car on them, though I'm not sure it can be helped. Also, the interior stairs in our apartment were quite dangerous in their weird angles and uneven quality, though again I don't suppose much can be done to correct their angle or depth. I would say it might be good to advise older travellers of the stairs in some apartments, especially "The Tower," which was our residence.
Surrounding Area:
It was incredibly beautiful. I hate to sound gushy or cliche', but there is almost no describing: It was simply stunning. The dirt roads, the ancient golden buildings, the green and silver and bronze of the landscape, the nearby towns of Bargino and Montefiridolfi, were all classically rustic Italian in all the best ways.
Nearby Events or Locales:
One could easily hike to Montefiridolfi or Bargino. I would guess that the former was no more than 3/4 of a mile away, and Bargino was perhaps a mile and a half from the bottom of the hill. It was very hot and my wife is not much of a hiker, but I could have easily walked to either one.
Tips or Restaurants:
Trattoria Da Bule in Bargino was a very good "hole in the wall," especially their house wine. I would advise most people from the US not to go to Italy in August as it is just miserably humid. That was a major drawback of our trip. I would also say that if like us you are more sedentary than you should be i.e., typically American, it would be a good idea to do some serious walking and /or running before visiting. Also, watch out for wasps outside the windows in the daytime!
Directions:
Maps were confusing and left out key turns.

David, August

Overall:
We had a wonderful time at this castello and would highly recommend it. Our apartment had so much character!! We enjoyed the decor, which seemed appropriate for the ambiance of the castle. The large upstairs bedroom had shutter windows which opened to beautiful views. The grounds of the castle were nicely tended, and there were some peaceful spots on which to gather during the day or evening for a nice glass of Chianti. The pool was clean and refreshing, and also offered a beautiful view. We enjoyed the lingering scent of lavender on the path to the pool. The staff were all very helpful, friendly, and eager to please.
Enjoyed Most:
We loved so many things the view from our bedroom, the unique period decor in our apartment, the central location of the property, the beautiful grounds, the amazing staff.
Enjoyed Least:
We found our mattress-bed to be a little uncomfortable.
Surrounding Area:
This villa was close to many unique villages and the scenery was beautiful. It was also close to the main highway, which allowed for easy access to some of the more well-known spots such as Florence and Siena.
Nearby Events or Locales:
I think the nearest small town was Bargino, but Montefirdolfi was also close. Both are within walking distance, but the drivers on the road were a little crazy and I definitely wouldn't recommend the walk if you aren't able to jump out of the way quickly!
Tips or Restaurants:
While we weren't bothered by it at all, the steps leading up to the bedroom of our apartment were steep and would be difficult for a person who has trouble with mobility. Our apartment was quite suitable for the two of us, and would also work well for a family of four including two children. We LOVED "A Casa Mia" which was the small restaurant on the main street in Montefiridofi. The food was authentic and so tasty - we went back twice so that we could try different dishes. We also heard from some other couples that the restaurants in Bargino served delicious authentic Italian food.
Directions:
WE didn't use a GPS. We had a great map of Tuscany, and followed the directions on the print-out we got from Rentvillas.com. We had no trouble finding the place.
Check In Out:
The staff were helpful and check-in and out were easy.

Veronica, July

Overall:
Amazing location 25 min from the city giving you the best of both worlds. Close to enchanted towns full of history and culture.
Enjoyed Most:
The peace and tranquility. Very nice place where you can experience the beauty of nature at its best.
Enjoyed Least:
The bathroom had a drain problem.
Surrounding Area:
Magical!!! Right from a magazine!!!
Nearby Events or Locales:
There were various towns, one at walking distance - Montefiredolfi - beautiful, another - San Casciano - not a walking distance but a 5 min drive. Beautiful place where the people enjoy the Bella Vita!!!
Tips or Restaurants:
Great restaurant Casa Mia. NEED RESERVATION do it with time because is a very small restaurant and is full most of the time!!! But is completely worth it!!!!
Directions:
Directions were clear...

NANCY, April

Overall:
Wonderful.
Enjoyed Most:
The accommodations were great if you like staying in a castle. The view was spectacular and since we traveled in November, the property was very peaceful.
Enjoyed Least:
The swimming pool was closed - but it was November.
Surrounding Area:
Everything. There was a town nearby for purchasing groceries. We were so close to Florence, even though we decided not to go there - we visited the surrounding medieval villages and Siena. The beautiful countryside!
Tips or Restaurants:
We spent time driving around the area and staying away from the larger cities. The other small town near us, San Casciano, had a grocery store and small markets and shops that we enjoyed.
Directions:
We didn't need to use a GPS. We drove up from Salerno and had no problem locating the property.
Check In Out:
The ladies at the reception desk were very helpful throughout our stay.

Bea, November

Overall:
Very helpful ladies at the reception. Couldn't ask for better.
Enjoyed Most:
The view and the aesthetic of the property exterior.
Enjoyed Least:
Couches, rugs were worn. Kitchen small, but adequate.
Surrounding Area:
Everything.
Tips or Restaurants:
Have a GPS.

Elise, October

Overall:
We loved it. It was excellent!
Enjoyed Most:
Pretty much everything: the views, the history of the place, the character of the apartments, outdoors, location (very close to highway to Florence, Siena and other beautiful small towns).
Enjoyed Least:
No shower curtain in the bathroom, and the road up to the property.
Surrounding Area:
Views, views, beautiful smells - a lot of great aromas from pretty flowers, herbs, etc. We had a great weather!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino was the closest, but not much to do or see. The best was, second close, S.Casciano - about 10 minute drive. It had a few restaurants, stores, ice cream places, etc.
Tips or Restaurants:
The reception gives you pretty much everything you need to know about the area, local restaurants, shopping, outlets, grocery stores, driving directions. The apartments had everything we needed - the only things we had to buy were food, drinks and spices. The dish soap and detergent for dish washer was also provided. We didn't see any laundry machines, but we didn't need it either.
Directions:
We used a map and were just fine.
Check In Out:
Everything was just fine.

Grace, June

Overall:
The accommodation was indeed a very romantic castle, and we had spectacular views. However, all this romantic medieval environment had some medieval inconveniences.
Enjoyed Most:
Spectacular views. The staff were helpful, and it was a reasonable base for our daily excursions to other towns, although we felt isolated as far as shops or anything to do in the evening.
Enjoyed Least:
There was no fan, which would have helped fight the heat at night. There was no hair dryer, iron or ironing board. We knew there were a lot of steps up to the apartment, but what we overlooked was the 14 additional steps up to the bathroom and bedroom floor. We were bothered by mosquitoes. We brought repellent, as you advised, which was only partially successful. Late in the week, we remembered about the electrical device, and the very kind custodian found and loaned us two of them. We missed the fact (if it was mentioned) that there is no shower, another inconvenience. Editor's Note: The electrical devices for mosquitoes are now provided for every apartment. In addition, there is one fan per bedroom provided. May 2008.

Stephen, September

Overall:
We had a fabulous time greatly due to our accommodations at the Castello. Never thought I'd get to stay in an actual castle but I guess dreams do come true.
Enjoyed Most:
The view was literally breathtaking and the girls in the "office" were so helpful.
Enjoyed Least:
The couch in the living room was not very comfortable to sit on but they were measuring for a new one while we were there, so I'm sure the next guests to stay there will not have a single complaint.
Surrounding Area:
The view ! The view! The View ! Plus..... Did I mention it's an actual castle!!!!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino was the nearest small town and it would be very difficult to walk to. The road down to the town is long, steep, windy and narrow.
Tips or Restaurants:
You really need a vehicle to enjoy Tuscany. One of the restaurants the girls in the office recommended was our favorite of our whole trip including the Amalfi coast. It was called Nello's in San Casciano. It looks like a little hole in the wall from the outside but opens up at the back up the stairs to a beautiful dining area with the best food in Italy and that is saying a lot !
Directions:
We had a GPS with our rental car that was very handy for touring around Tuscany, but we didn't need it to get to the property. The directions provided by Rentvillas were very detailed and correct down to every kilometer.
Check In Out:
The girls in the office were great! We need to leave early Saturday morning so they checked us out the day before at a time of our convenience.

Melanie, September

Overall:
This was a rare occasion where the pictures and descriptions paled in comparison to the actual beauty and serenity of the Castello.
Enjoyed Most:
The views from our bedroom and pool deck were stunning. Beautiful hillsides in all directions.
Enjoyed Least:
The narrow uphill driveway to park beside the castello.
Surrounding Area:
Listening to a street musician on the Ponte Vecchio in Firenze after Mama Gina's was a very romantic evening.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino was closest but was a fair distance at the bottom of a steep hill. Good to work the pasta off but hard on the tootsies on the way home!
Tips or Restaurants:
Both Bargino and San Casciano had lovely and quaint restaurants and we concurred with the suggestions from your "little white book". Shopping at the Coop in San Casciano allowed for some very nice home cooking. If you like North American coffee, bring a coffee pot. Above all, there was a new masseuse named Roberto who works out of the wellness centre. He was a very warm and friendly man and a massage at the end of the week in the beautiful room topped the stay. This is a service that definitely needs to be advertised to the guests.

Greg, August

Enjoyed Most:
The view was just spectacular. We never tired of looking out across the Tuscan countryside. The sense of history about the property made it really special. Renovations to this 11th century structure have been done lovingly by the current owner with sensitivity to the original construction. Yet the amenities were commensurate with modern travelers' expectations.
Enjoyed Least:
Room was not air-conditioned. Frankly, I really doubt that it could be and still preserve the unique character of the property. Weather was pleasant while we were there, so AC was not missed, but prospective clients may want to take this into consideration. Also, laundry facilities are available, but rudimentary. There is probably a lavanderia in San Casciano, though.
Surrounding Area:
Mostly the incredible beauty of the Tuscan countryside. Views from every window of our room looked like calendar photos. Property is 12 km south of Florence. We did have a car and it took about 30 minutes to go from the villa to being parked in downtown Florence. It was also very easy to get on the autostrada and travel to Pisa, Siena, Assisi, etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano, the nearest town, was delightful, however.
Tips or Restaurants:
Don't miss Wed eve wine tastings at the Villa. We were given a list of restaurants in surrounding villages when we checked in. We sampled several and most were very good. The restaurant Albergaccio Machiavelli in Percussina is difficult to find but well worth the effort.

Robert , July

Overall:
We had a great experience and the keyholder was very helpful with any of our issues.
Enjoyed Most:
Sitting by the pool.
Enjoyed Least:
The fact that there were no screens on the windows in the bedroom.
Surrounding Area:
Spectacular scenery and wonderful wine.
Tips or Restaurants:
Ensure you have mosquito repellent for the night time. Da Bule, the town at the bottom of the hill, was a great restaurant and we had one of the most amazing desserts of our whole trip there.

Cathy, July

Overall:
Extremely good.
Enjoyed Most:
The view, and the whole castle was beautifully finished.
Enjoyed Least:
Very hot, but that's more the weather's fault.
Surrounding Area:
Great little hill towns, perfect location for Siena or Florence, close to highway, but not too close.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Montefiridolfi, and yes, its a good walk, but close enough to do for dinner.
Tips or Restaurants:
Casamia in Montefiridolfi, really small, really good, or Cibreo in Florence, expensive, but a great dining experience.

Gregory, July

Overall:
It was like living in a postcard - very beautiful to look at, both inside and out.
Enjoyed Most:
The view from the bedroom windows was magnificent. The grounds were immaculate and a pleasure to walk around.
Enjoyed Least:
The bed was really uncomfortable and creaked. The furniture in the living room looked nice but was also uncomfortable.
Surrounding Area:
Aside from having to negotiate several difficult switchbacks every time we left the property, the location was excellent in its proximity to locations in upper Tuscany. The countryside is beautiful and the hill towns all worth seeing. We particularly liked Siena.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town of note was San Casciano - approximately a 10-15 minute drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
Definitely bring a good reading light as the living room lighting is inadequate. There are a few nice restaurants in San Casciano and a good supermarket. Be prepared to climb some steep hills and lots of stairs.

Jack, June

Overall:
This was a perfect location for us as we were visiting Siena, Monteriggioni, Cortona, and departing from the Pisa Airport.
Enjoyed Most:
Fabulous views.
Surrounding Area:
There were good restaurants and amenities nearby.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino is about a 5 minute drive down the hill. Very steep, would not recommend walking. Bargino has an excellent seafood restaurant in the middle of town attached to the small hotel.
Tips or Restaurants:
The seafood restaurant just down the hill in Bargino was quite a surprise.
Directions:
We had no problems finding the villa.

James, May

Overall:
The castello was one of the most beautiful places I've stayed. I have absolutely no complaints, and would definitely stay there again! Christiana was wonderful in helping us make reservations, and recommending restaurants. She speaks very good English.
Enjoyed Most:
It's tough to choose what was the best! The views were spectacular, the grounds were stunning, and the apartment was perfect! I would also recommend having breakfast at the castello at least once. It's a little expensive, but worth the experience.
Enjoyed Least:
???? there was nothing i didn't like.
Surrounding Area:
I loved the proximity to Florence, and the highway. The local small towns such as Montefiridolfi and Bargino were great for a quick cappuccino in the morning, and the drive to them was beautiful. San Casciano was also a nice town, with lots of shops and restaurants. The Coop is ok if you want to stock up some things, but take advantage of the fresh produce, cheese, and ham that you can find in San Casciano and Florence.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino and Montefiridolfi were the closest towns. Neither were in walking distance. A car is must in this area.
Tips or Restaurants:
Cantina Nonno in San Casciano was great!!! Our waiter spoke very good English, and helped us with the menu. They were very friendly, and the food was excellent! Also, while in Florence, Tratorria Il Latini is a must!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fabulous food, fabulous service, lots of locals as well as tourists. Make reservations or you will wait! The castle apartment had everything we needed, including olive oil, salt, pepper... we couldn't find the silverware and had to ask. if you stay, it's in a drawer that's built into the kitchen table. Oh, and be careful when lighting a fire! the smoke tends to back up into the apartment. We opened the little window by the stove and that helped.
Directions:
It's very easy to get to! Just make sure you take the Bargino exit. If you take the San Casciano exit, you will have a very difficult time.

Patricia, May

Overall:
On a scale of 1 out of 10... it was a 20!
Enjoyed Most:
The serenity, the view, the tasteful decor...just the whole ambiance of living in a medieval village. The wine tasting tour was great.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing... it was perfect.
Surrounding Area:
It was close to everything for day trips... to Florence, the hill towns, the Chianti.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Montefiridolfi was a few kilometres away, so a good walk through gorgeous countryside. And it has a great restaurant, Casa Mia, but they only take you if you have a reservation. The very helpful girls at the reception area will call for you.
Tips or Restaurants:
Casa Mia in Montefiridolfi and Mama Rosa's just down the road on the way to San Casciano were both good. The apartment is supplied with dishes for basic cooking, an espresso coffee maker in which you can do regular coffee, and basic ingredients such as olive oil and balsamic vinegar. If you buy any herbs or other staples, it is nice to leave them for the next renter. so that it just continues to be a great place.
Directions:
Just be sure to review the driving instructions as you are going north up the autostrade. you need to get off at the Bargino exit. and then it is very easy to find. If you go to the San Casciano one, you have gone a few kilometres too far.
Check In Out:
The girls speak excellent English and are very helpful.

Arthur, April

Enjoyed Most:
The views of the Tuscan countryside were incredible. The entire property was beautiful. We were in the castle, which turned out great. We were there in early November, which was a great time of year ... beautiful weather and few people. The location was amazing. It's literally only 10 to 15 minutes to Florence, but still well in the Chianti area.
Enjoyed Least:
The kitchen was a little small, as was the refrigerator.
Surrounding Area:
The fall colors were in full bloom. The golden yellow leafs of the grape vines were stunning across the entire area. We went for long drives through Chianti, and it felt like we were driving in a postcard
Nearby Events or Locales:
Was not much of a small town within walking distance. The little towns in the area were good for stopping in for lunch or dinner. The office at the villa had good recommendations for restaurants.
Tips or Restaurants:
I think if we stay there again, it would be in one of the farmhouses; they seemed somewhat larger, although it really wasn't a problem for us.

Enjoyed Most:
The property is beautifully nestled on top of a hill, with olive trees and grape vines, fruit trees and flowers surrounding it. It was just spectacular to come in and out of the property. Better than you can imagine it to be.
Enjoyed Least:
No laundry facilities...
Surrounding Area:
Walking around the property between all the live trees, the smell of fresh air, the easiness of getting to surrounding villages and towns by car, the wonderful Mamma Rosa trattoria at the bottom of the hill...fantastic chef/owner. Just make sure you go there only during opening hours.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town was San Casciano in Val di Pesa about 10 minutes by car....Also Travanelle is another 15 minute by car going south from the castello and has a great town market on Wednesday.
Tips or Restaurants:
When you arrive, try as much as you can not to buy all your groceries at the supermarket, COOP in San Casciano...because they have a public market on Monday in the center of town and it is well worth the wait to get your cheeses, breads, charcuterie, meats, produce, etc from there...San Casciano, which became one of our most favorite little towns, has a great restaurant, Nello...must try it. Also, has a wonderful wine bar in the center of town that serves only local San Casciano pecorino cheese and local charcuterie with fantastic artisan bread....Don't forget Mamma Rosa for those rainy nights or a good home cooked meal when you don't feel like driving far; they open at 730 pm for dinner...don't go earlier, they will be having dinner as a family As for bringing things to the property, it had everything that we needed, soap, shampoo, garbage bags, toilet paper..even salt and pepper, oil and vinegar, probably from the previous renter
Directions:
Do make sure you exit Bargino and not San Casciano....very important.

Overall:
It was the MOST magical place! My husband commented that if they had a 5 star restaurant, we probably would have never left the property. The castle was even more beautiful than the pictures. We would go back in a heartbeat. Thank you for a wonderful website and great preparation for our trip. It was about as perfect as you can get!
Enjoyed Most:
The views were to die for (we stayed in the main castle on the top floor) and we were more than prepared because of the booklet that we received from RentVillas. I don't think I'll ever stay in a hotel room again when we travel. Our experience was so great. The ladies in the reception office were most helpful and welcoming. We had no trouble as they spoke English very well. The rental property provided us with the plug-in mosquito repellant that was quite fragrant and worked very well. If I was to go back I think I would bring some kind of netting to put over the windows so you could open them wide at night to take advantage of the lovely breeze. We never had any in our room but I was more concerned about bats than mosquitoes! None-the-less, we slept very well without air-conditioning or fans.
Tips or Restaurants:
We tried to use our limited Italian but there was no need in most places we went. But even in the few restaurants where our waiter didn't speak English, we got by with our phrase book and smiles. Actually many of the items we were told to bring were provided in the apartment. Spices, coffee, knives, cutting board, cleaning items were all there. I was happy that we brought an extra roll of toilet paper and a scrub sponge, but even then, we really didn't need to. We took advantage of one breakfast that was lovely and the wine tasting offered on the Wednesday of our stay. The woman that gave us the tour of the castle and conducted the wine tasting for us was a pure delight! Otherwise, we made coffee in our room and had some biscotti before heading out to explore the countryside.
Directions:
We rented a car and had little problem negotiating the roads. The signs on the highways take some getting used to as towns and exits are closer than we are used to here in the states but after a few wrong turns, we found our bearings.

Overall:
This is a beautiful property! The staff was multilingual and very helpful with driving direction and planning day trips.
Enjoyed Most:
The current owners did a wonderful job with renovations that kept the feel of the old castle. Our apartment was incredibly spacious and charming.
Enjoyed Least:
The bed is in need of replacing.
Surrounding Area:
The nearby town had old Italy charm and appeal.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano is the nearby town. It was a short drive from the property.
Tips or Restaurants:
Florence and San Gimignano are nearby and make wonderful day trips.
Directions:
We drove from Rome and had a terrible time finding the property. We were able to stop several times to ask friendly locals for help. The trick is to go to Florence on the A-1 autostrada and then get on the Siena-Florence Superstrada to easily locate the property.
Check In Out:
Again, the staff was friendly and helpful.

Enjoyed Most:
The view as well as the peace and quiet!
Enjoyed Least:
There weren't enough bath towels provided to last a week and that nothing was within walking distance from the villa.
Surrounding Area:
The views!
Nearby Events or Locales:
About 10 minutes away driving. Nothing was within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring extra towel!! Nello and Nonno were great restaurants located in the town of San Casciano about 10 minutes from the villa. In all the restaurants that we visited all had such great flavor added to their meals.

Ralph, April

Overall:
It's a real castle. There was a hotel-like quality about the place in the way it was run and the services offered. Our first rental was an individual home, so this was a different experience.
Enjoyed Most:
The view was great. The place was really huge. The bedroom was really nice - good bed - and there was a spa bathtub. Great view from the bedroom window.
Enjoyed Least:
The first two days it was warm, but then it started to get cold. We tried to use the fireplace, but it smoked. Also, the kitchen was tiny I kept banging my head.

Gloria, October

Enjoyed Most:
The view from the bedroom windows.
Surrounding Area:
The views, the history, the wine, the food, the people.
Tips or Restaurants:
Take lots of bug spray. Didn't visit one bad restaurant - loved them all. Try the local fish restaurant in Bargino but take a phrase book with you unless you can read Italian.

Susan, June

Overall:
It substantially exceeded our expectations.
Enjoyed Most:
The view and the amazing restoration job done on an important historical property. The Castello apartment was especially roomy and beautiful. The swimming pool and view from it were lovely.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing
Surrounding Area:
The food, the wine, the friendly people, the art and architecture
Nearby Events or Locales:
Montefiridolfi - 1.5 km - yes, you could walk. Bargino - 2 km.

Barry, May

Enjoyed Most:
The beauty and location. Easy access to many surrounding towns and to Florence. The staff was very helpful.
Enjoyed Least:
It wasn't as clean as I would have liked, especially the kitchen area. Also, we arrived on Saturday afternoon and the office was closed until Tuesday, so there was no one to ask questions, etc., until we'd been there a few days and figured things out on our own. We were there in February, and it was difficult to keep the apartment warm, but it would be great in warmer weather. Editor's Note: During the tourist season the office is open on Saturday.
Surrounding Area:
Again, the beauty, and we enjoyed walking.

Nancy, February

Overall:
Great Chianti from the property vineyards!
Enjoyed Most:
The setting, the actual villa. The staff was great.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing.
Surrounding Area:
Olive tree groves, vineyards, a 1.5mile walk to the next small town each day...
Nearby Events or Locales:
Montefiridolfi

Mary, November

Overall:
Overall it was well-maintained, clean and beautiful.
Enjoyed Most:
It is a beautiful estate with incredible character and history, amazing location, grounds and views, and friendly staff.
Enjoyed Least:
Kitchen was on the small side, and would have been good if it was a bit better equipped, so that you could make the most of cooking with the amazing ingredients available locally. The bathroom would have been better if the shower was wall-mounted, and had a shower-curtain. Bed in the main bedroom was creaky. Chimney might need cleaned as it was a bit smoky when lighting a fire.
Surrounding Area:
Great location for exploring the region from Florence to Siena, and just a couple of minutes off the motorway which allowed us to get to further away places quickly, whilst also being brilliant for exploring the little villages and beautiful countryside off the beaten track.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano in Val de Pesa was the nearest small town although Bargino closer, only had one small store.
Tips or Restaurants:
Would second previous visitor's recommendations for Mama Rosa, also would definitely suggest visiting Castello di Verazzano, Greve in Chianti, for their amazing wine-tasting and gastronomic tour.
Directions:
Only thing would be that on leaving the A-1, the roundabout has two exits to Siena, and that you need to take the SS2, not the old road.
Check In Out:
Staff were very friendly and helpful, even when we were running late on arrival.

Andrew, October

Overall:
Would recommend this villa highly.
Enjoyed Most:
The view.........it was breathtaking, I never got tired of it and took lots and lots of pictures of the beautiful view. The mountains, the vineyards and olive trees were awesome. Also, the girls at the reception area spoke English pretty well, which helped with check-in.
Enjoyed Least:
The steps from the living room up to the bedroom and bath are extremely steep and narrow, so if you have a hard time walking up steps, this is not a place for you. And there are also a lot of stairs from the main level up to the apartment. Also, since we had the windows open at night, and during the day, you could here the traffic on the Florence-Siena main highway.
Surrounding Area:
Pretty easy to get around. Although I learned some Italian before our trip, I wish I had learned more. In the small towns around our villa the people spoke very little English.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano..........it was a short drive, not walking distance. Had a wonderful pizzeria there first one on your left - the owners were so nice and friendly and there is a fabulous bakery where we bought fresh bread and cheese. Also had a wonderful fruit market there. Parking is hard to find, but if you go before the dinner crowds at 7pm, you should find a place. But don't waste your money on an upscale restaurant in San Casciano called Nello's.........we went there and the food wasn't good at all and our waiter was rude and very unhelpful.
Tips or Restaurants:
Our stay was Sept. 17-24, and the temp was a little chilly at night, so I would bring something warm to sleep in. The floors are all tile and brick and warm socks help. Also, no wash cloths provided, so would suggest future renters bring their own. No maid service; it is an extra cost.

Enjoyed Most:
The castle was beautifully decorated, and although there were others there, we felt we had all the privacy we wanted. The view was amazing and there was a fantastic restaurant called Mama Rosa's nearby that was delicious. Great peaceful pool surrounded by lavender. Great wine tasting and tour was worth the cost .
Enjoyed Least:
No laundry facilities. We spent two days trying to get our laundry done in various small towns. The kitchen was tiny and I kept bonking my head on the ceiling. It was totally adequate, just quite small and tucked into funny corners. The traffic noise was present , too.
Surrounding Area:
So much! The wine tasting, the views, the little towns, the castles. It was beautiful.
Tips or Restaurants:
Don't plan to do your laundry, although there is dry cleaning in San Casciano, but it takes four days and has creative hours. Go to Mama Rosa's and have their lasagna. You may want to build a new religion around it - soo delicious. Oh, and sit outside in the garden. Lovely. We thought our bathtub whirlpool was broken and just didn't bother to check it out - there' s a button on the wall that we missed. You may want to ask about a fan during mosquito season, since you need to keep the windows closed and their are no screens. You can borrow their bikes for the day. Also, don't bother to go to the tourist information centre in San Casciano the woman there was the least helpful person I've ever met.

Overall:
Be sure to walk around the olive groves and surrounding area. The views are spectacular. All of the units looked nice at this property. They had a wedding as we were leaving which looked perfect.
Enjoyed Most:
It was truly a remarkable experience, and one we will never forget. We will definitely consider staying at the Castello again, or one of the other units of this property, should we return to the area.
Enjoyed Least:
The only troubling aspect was the first trip up the driveway as it was narrow and had many sharp turns as you climbed the hill. However, once we got the hang of it there was no trouble. Just be sure to rent a small car! Be aware that bathroom is en suite to the bedroom, so I would only recommend this unit for a couple or a couple with children.
Surrounding Area:
Everything was beautiful. For a great picnic spot, make a left at the bottom of the driveway and head into the hills. Drive a long way on winding roads through the hills until you pass (just) over the Firenze-Siena road, there is a picnic table off in a clearing on the top of the mountain, with enough room to park. The views were truly spectacular and peaceful, with no one else around. Aside from that, the cities were close by, and the Firenze-Siena motorway is really close by which is a non-toll road going to our favorite city, Siena, and many wonderful small hill town all along the way. The villa was perfectly located.
Nearby Events or Locales:
There was nothing within walking distance. There were two tiny towns very close by, with one small restaurant in each, but we never tried them. We went a bit further along and parked at the next town which had 5-6 restaurants and a small grocery store plus a gelateria. The first pizza place you hit on the left has great beer, wonderful pies, fresh pasta and very reasonable prices. Plus, they were open very late.
Tips or Restaurants:
Helpful hint - the silverware, knives, can opener and cork screw are in the drawer in the table. We bought all new stuff because we couldnt find them and only noticed the drawer on our way out. Also, be sure to ask for the TV Satellite remote control upon arrival, along with anything else you need right away, since the reception is closed on Sunday and Monday.

Enjoyed Most:
The location was lovely. The highway access was great with easy access to other locations. Everyone at the Castello was extremely accommodating. The towel heaters in the bath were wonderful.
Enjoyed Least:
The stairs and narrow doorways were a bit of a challenge after the long flight and driving, but that was because we were tired.
Surrounding Area:
There is an Estruscan tomb near the property. We were within easy driving distance to Lucca, Siena, San Gimignano, Certaldo, etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano is the closest town, and you need to drive to get there. We did our grocery shopping at the COOP grocery store. There is also free Internet access at the library in town.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring your slippers. Learn some Italian; the people in the small towns do not speak English but will try their best to help you.

Enjoyed Most:
I loved everything about this property. The staff were so warm and hospitable and helped us out with what to do and where to go. We went to a wine tasting on the property and the caretaker made us fresh bread! Now that is awesome! I have never stayed at a place more beautiful. And because I am not a writer, I cannot put into words how great the property was. I will stay there again.
Enjoyed Least:
I can not come up with anything.
Surrounding Area:
What is there not to enjoy about the surrounding area. We traveled to many small villages and experienced the culture of Tuscany.
Tips or Restaurants:
Restaurant - A Casa Mia in Montefiridolfi. Things to bring - extra space to carry things home in!

Beth, November

Overall:
Go for it. Bella Toscana.
Enjoyed Most:
The grounds and the view.
Enjoyed Least:
Stairs, lots of stairs. But it is a castle after all. Mosquitoes at night. No air conditioning, but it wasn't too hot.
Surrounding Area:
Beautiful scenery, friendly people, wonderful food and wine.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Not really close enough to walk to a town.
Tips or Restaurants:
Montefiridolfi has a great, tiny resturant. A Casa Mia. Make reservations.
