Customer Reviews

Overall:
This location provides a tranquil setting with breathtaking views of the Tuscan countryside. You can, and we did several times, view spectacular sunrises while having our early breakfasts.
Enjoyed Most:
The property, inside and out, is well kept. This made for a relaxing home like feeling.
Enjoyed Least:
All that was available on TV were a myriad of cable news channels but watching TV was not a 10 on our list of things to do.
Surrounding Area:
Everything!!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano was within walking distance. We drove.
Tips or Restaurants:
Elizabeth provided a recommended list of local restaurants. We tried several and they were excellent.
Directions:
GPS worked for us. Elizabeth's directions worked well also.
Check In Out:
Both processes were quick and easy.

Dan, May

Overall:
The property is beautiful. The views are outrageous. Elizabeth was a wonderful hostess. From the first time we met her she called the villa "our home". She was friendly and informative. Great personality!
Enjoyed Most:
I loved the kitchen and the views from the back patio are just awesome. Vineyards and cypress trees. The bird sounds. Just beautiful.
Enjoyed Least:
My only issue with the property was the lack of cable on the television. After a long day of sightseeing it would have been nice to come home and watch a movie. The owner explained that because of the location of the villa that was the best they could do.
Surrounding Area:
I loved the surrounding area. Certaldo is a small town with great little stores and places to eat. Getting around in a car was great once we got our bearings.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was the nearest town and I would not say it was within walking distance. A car is essential if you want to go sightsee.
Tips or Restaurants:
The Coop market in Certaldo is great as is the Pam supermarket. The little pizza place down the road was wonderful.
Directions:
We did not have GPS but the owner told us that GPS is not really that helpful when you are in a remote location.
Check In Out:
The check-in process was wonderful. We called Elizabeth because we got lost and she gave us directions to get to the villa. She gave us a tour of the villa, gave us the keys and was available when we had any questions. Check out was excellent, too. We had a chance to chat with her more and we would definitely stay there again.

Patricia , May

Overall:
Our trip was fabulous! Many laughs, great food and wine, and breathtaking views.
Enjoyed Most:
We loved the villa. I was great to make breakfast and have a chef come in one night. Elizabeth responded to our questions and needs.
Surrounding Area:
Wonderful experiences navigating the small, windy roads of Tuscany. Our GPS was a life savior.
Tips or Restaurants:
It is definitely necessary to rent a car, which we did. Hire a private chef through RentVillas.

Claudia, October

Overall:
Fabulous.
Enjoyed Most:
The beauty of the area. The location was great. It was a short drive to the train station, wine tasting was easy to find, Siena was close by and we loved the walled town of Certaldo.
Surrounding Area:
Golf, wine tasting, short trips to Pisa, Siena and Florence.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo. 7 kilometers downhill.
Tips or Restaurants:
Just explore. There are a lot of good restaurants. We enjoyed barbequeing at the villa
Directions:
We had GPS and that did make it somewhat easier. We got to Certaldo and followed the directions given.
Check In Out:
Everything was very smooth. Elizabeth was there to greet us and the villa was ready for us.

Susan, October

Overall:
Very good. Elizabeth was a most congenial hostess. Around when you needed her and not when you didn't need her. Great facilities.
Enjoyed Most:
All!!! The living area porch in the late afternoon evenings were great.
Enjoyed Least:
The view from the porch was reduced by overgrown shrubs. They should be trimmed back to get a really good view of the valley.
Surrounding Area:
Great area for exploring. The small towns and villages were great. Several good dining experiences, Wilma's has really good home style cooking. Greve (pronounced Grav-ay) was very interesting and had several nice places to eat.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo, no. However we took the train to Florence from there. Parking and driving in Florence is a little difficult.
Directions:
Everything is great until you get to Certaldo. Elizabeth had to pick us up at the Hotel Certaldo.
Check In Out:
Easiest ever!!!

Hollie, September

Overall:
We had a fantastic vacation and enjoyed coming home to Villa Certaldo at the end of the day after our excursions.
Enjoyed Most:
The location and scenery.
Surrounding Area:
The hill towns and scenery.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo. No - you need a car to get there.
Tips or Restaurants:
We hired Chef Matisse to cook dinner for us and thoroughly enjoyed it. We also went to the Medieval Festival in Certaldo and enjoyed a very unique experience.

Vassilios, July

Overall:
We had a wonderful month. The villa is steeped in wonderful history and we found the location good for day trips by car to all the hill towns and train trips to Siena and Florence. The views and amenities made staying "at home" a pleasure and Elizabeth was always responsive and used her language skills and local knowledge to help us with everything from dinner reservations to dealing with a rental car problem.
Enjoyed Most:
The view is lovely and the villa is comfortable and complete. We enjoyed learning the wonderful history of the site and enjoying its renovated status and decor. It has great indoor, outdoor and private spaces.
Enjoyed Least:
We found the lighting a bit dim for our aging eyes, especially in the kitchen.
Surrounding Area:
The village of Certaldo has very nice shops for food and other basics, several quite good restaurants, and a local market day but does not feel "touristy". The funicular up to the old city provides an extra layer of interest and additional places to dine.
Nearby Events or Locales:
You need a car to get to town but we found no issues parking at the railroad station or in the square.
Tips or Restaurants:
The villa is well equipped and the local Coop has detergent or other basics you might need to replenish. Basic spices and cleaning products were there. We really enjoyed two restaurants that are on the same street Casa Linga and Salleto.
Check In Out:
No issues.

Bob, November

Overall:
Villa Certaldo is a peaceful, beautiful home that was very comfortable for our month in Tuscany.
Enjoyed Most:
The home was very well appointed with everything one would need for a short or extended visit. The location was ideal for exploring Tuscany. The owner, Elizabeth, made sure that our stay was perfect.
Enjoyed Least:
There were no negatives about the house. The only thing that could have been improved would be if the trees were trimmed outside the back porch so that the view could be better enjoyed. Views from all the rooms were lovely.
Surrounding Area:
There were many towns to explore and Certaldo itself is a lovely town with everything one would need and a beautiful ancient town above. The surrounding countryside is stunning.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is the nearest town. It is not walking distance. One would want to have a car to travel in this area.
Tips or Restaurants:
I can't think of anything one would need to bring. We enjoyed La Saletta in Certaldo several times.
Directions:
Directions are fine and Elizabeth will help anyone who is having problems finding the property.
Check In Out:
The check in and check out process was low key and no problem at all. Elizabeth is very gracious and helpful.

Joan, October

Overall:
We loved our stay in the villa.
Enjoyed Most:
The position and view. Elizabeth couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. The villa has been renovated beautifully and all the fittings were high quality. The pool was a welcome relief and beautifully clean. Very peaceful during the day - only the nights were somewhat disrupted due to dogs barking from another property. Beds were very comfortable and overhead fans were great. Laundry facilities were excellent
Enjoyed Least:
Lighting in the kitchen could have been better, in fact the lighting everywhere was quite dim..
Surrounding Area:
The most beautiful countryside - the best in Italy!!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano is withing walking distance although didn't walk as there are no shops. Certaldo was 6 kms away - well serviced but not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Fabulous restaurants in the walled village of Certaldo as well as San Gimingnano.
Directions:
Yes, used a GPS, which we needed in Italy. The directions provided were good.
Check In Out:
Check in and out were smooth and no problems.

Susi , September

Overall:
We loved the villa. Elizabeth was wonderful. Everything was perfect.
Enjoyed Most:
It felt like home. The bathrooms were wonderful. The beds were extremely comfortable. It was truly a home away from home!
Enjoyed Least:
The patio or deck was a most delightful place, but, the view was impaired by an overgrown olive tree; the gardener was injured, and as a result the property was temporarily ungroomed. From the upstairs bedroom, the view was spectacular. In the early morning hours, we could hear dogs barking down in the valley.
Surrounding Area:
The beautiful Tuscan countryside. So many towns to visit and many open markets.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano was within walking distance, but it had only one restaurant, "Maroni", which was excellent for dinner, but no coffee bar in the morning.
Tips or Restaurants:
There are two great supermarkets near by, so you do not need to bring anything with you. Elizabeth has a list of restaurants that you will enjoy
Directions:
Yes, a GPS is imperative. We could not have navigated the Italian roads without it. Directions to the villa were not exactly clear. We got lost- ended up in Certaldo, then saw the sign to Sciano. Stopped a lot of people and they kept pointing in the right direction. Very few people in this area speak English but are very friendly. Mention Elizabeth's name.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth made both of those easy. If you read the agreement, you know what to do.

Danya, August

Overall:
We liked staying in this villa and calling it "home" for 3 weeks!! It is a beautiful property and the location was great! I enjoyed reading about the history of the villa, the artwork, and it's owner.
Enjoyed Most:
The views and the Carrara marble bathrooms.
Enjoyed Least:
Noise and uncomfortable living room furniture.
Surrounding Area:
The restaurants, open markets, and Certaldo Alto
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo; no, it was not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
The pizzeria down the road from the villa is a great, casual, family place to go. My 6 year old daughter always had kids to play with after eating dinner. It was fun watching the world cup there too! Osteria del Vicario in Certaldo Alto is excellent! We also loved the restaurant in Semifonte--lovely setting and great food!
Directions:
Yes, we used our GPS. It isn't perfect, but it did help. Once you get on the Fi-Si, Elizabeth's directions were very helpful.

Tara, July

Overall:
It was a wonderful week. Elizabeth was a fabulous host.
Enjoyed Most:
The view was amazing. It was well kept and a comfortable place to stay.
Surrounding Area:
Earplugs were necessary for a good sleep; there are some dogs in the vicinity that bark at times.
Nearby Events or Locales:
No town near walking distance. However, there was a wonderful pizzeria that was walking distance. We hired Marco, a driver, for the week.
Tips or Restaurants:
When we arrived, there was laundry soap, towels, towels for the pool, salt, pepper, olive oil and balsalmic, as well as dishwasher soap and dishwashing soap. The restaurant that is 1 KM from villa is wonderful. For things to bring, email RentVillas and ask specifics. We found they were well stocked - but we bought things at grocery store that were already there.
Directions:
We emailed RentVillas prior to our stay and connected with a driver who gave us taxi service and excursions. However - I did check out the property prior using Google Maps - and found it.
Check In Out:
When we arrived at the villa, Elizabeth and her family were there to greet us, Elizabeth was available all week and we did confirm her availability prior to checking out to be sure she was there. She is an amazing host. Communicate with her if there are any concerns!

Lorrie, June

Overall:
It was a wonderful visit and an unusual opportunity to stay at a beautiful, and historically important, property. The owners were extremely helpful. Highly recommended.
Enjoyed Most:
The stunning views from the bedroom terrace, the loggia and elsewhere.
Enjoyed Least:
The surrounding area, meaning the nearby towns, are not as attractive as in some other parts of Tuscany. But this was a small price to pay for an exceptional experience.
Surrounding Area:
Certaldo has some good restaurants, and the railway station is a fun place to hang out while waiting for friends or relatives to arrive.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo. Several kilometers away and definitely not walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
The owners recommend several nearby restaurants, and all were good.
Directions:
The directions were fine -- no GPS needed, although we used one to find other places nearby.
Check In Out:
No, it was fine.

Alan, June

Overall:
Excellent experience. This is the third time we've stayed at Villa Certaldo. Elizabeth is gracious and helpful and the home is delightful.
Enjoyed Most:
The location and view.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing. It is wonderful.
Surrounding Area:
We enjoyed the local restaurants and alimentari, all recommended by Elizabeth.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano is the closest town and it is not within walking distance.
Check In Out:
It was easy and simple, thanks to Elizabeth.

Elaine, May

Overall:
Best part of our 15-day Italian vacation.
Enjoyed Most:
Beautiful countryside. Views were spectacular from any angle. Lovingly restored home with all the charm of old world Italy with modern conveniences-especially the bathrooms. New beds were very comfortable.
Enjoyed Least:
We could hear dogs howling from across the valley at night. Bring ear plugs just in case!
Surrounding Area:
Our location was perfect for exploring the countryside, catching the train in Certaldo for a day in Florence, or visiting the many nearby walled cities you read about in all the tour books.
Nearby Events or Locales:
You need a car. Roads are narrow and the closest town with stores, restaurants, etc. is Certaldo, about 5 minutes by car.
Tips or Restaurants:
Elizabeth's recommendations were great. She has a book with suggestions, directions, and answers to most any question. Our favorite was ll Paese dei Campanelli. More expensive but worth it.
Directions:
We brought a GPS from home that had Italy maps loaded on it.
Check In Out:
Easy and quick. Elizabeth will help you with any questions or concerns.

Suzanna, May

Overall:
We had a wonderful visit. The property is beautiful and Elizabeth was a very gracious hostess.
Enjoyed Most:
How beautiful and relaxing it is. Every morning we woke to the birds singing outside the window and the sun pouring in.
Enjoyed Least:
Sometimes the dogs barked in the middle of the night.
Surrounding Area:
The hill towns were wonderful to visit. We found each one to be unique and wandering their streets was so interesting. They really do take you back in time.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The villa was not close enough to any little towns to walk and there are lots of curves in the roads with no shoulders and pretty zippy driving.
Tips or Restaurants:
We preferred bottled water. Also, try to go when the weather is warmer than it is at the end of March, early April. Heat is extra after April 1 and very expensive. We were not disappointed with any of the restaurants we tried. Cum Quibus restaurant in San Gimignano was our favorite.
Directions:
We found the directions very helpful but would have had a difficult time without a GPS. So many roundabouts!!
Check In Out:
No problems with either and Elizabeth was very helpful.

Mike And Sandra, April

Overall:
Fantastic, beautiful property with an amazing hostess!
Enjoyed Most:
Amenities, hostess.
Enjoyed Least:
Slightly hard to find the first time around due to road construction in the area and GPS issue.
Surrounding Area:
Easy to get train to other major cities, close to market/grocery, beautiful landscape.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo, driving distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Use the European cell phone provided in case of emergencies - it was a life saver for us!
Directions:
Don't follow GPS - new Rt 429 construction gets you a little turned around. The written instructions provided with the villa info were correct, if slightly hard to follow. A MUCH better drive in daylight if possible.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth was fantastic with checking in/out and helping us settle in.

Kristin, November

Overall:
This was our second time staying at Villa Certaldo, and just like the first time, we were once again in love with it. There were four of us - two couples - and the villa was more than roomy enough for all of us. The amenities within the villa are great by North American standards - everything you could want, including a standard size refrigerator and a new flat screen TV. We once again fell in love with the comfortable hominess of Villa Certaldo!
Enjoyed Most:
We liked most the comfortable roominess of the villa, the modern amenities, the views and the location. Our favorite spot is the terrace overlooking the valley - a perfect spot for coffee and breakfast in the morning while watching the mist roll through and the hot air balloons float by.
Enjoyed Least:
We liked least the uncomfortable beds in all the bedrooms - the springs squeak and in general they feel well-used. Also, we found the sofas in the living room to be old and well-used, and the cushions constantly slipped forward making sitting uncomfortable.
Surrounding Area:
The surrounding area is beautiful and quiet. There was wildlife around, like pheasants and deer. There are rolling hills of vineyards and olive orchards. The surrounding area is a picture postcard!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is the nearest town, although it's not really within walking distance. Sciano is within walking distance, but I wouldn't consider it a town...it's pretty tiny.
Tips or Restaurants:
This house has it all - renters really just need to go to the villa and enjoy it. As with our first time visiting the villa, we dined several times at Pizzeria Maroni - it's an absolute must! Inexpensive and delicious home cooked food and pizzas - a true gem! We made our own meals at the house 5 out of the 7 nights we were there - the kitchen is adequately setup for making your own meals and dining in. Don't forget to visit the old medieval Certaldo...take the funicular up as it's only 1,50 EUR for a round trip ticket! The views are spectacular!
Directions:
This was our second time staying at the Villa, so we had already committed its location to memory and had no troubles finding it again. However, the first time we visited (2009) we found having the GPS coordinates a must.
Check In Out:
The process was great. Elizabeth welcomed us with open arms once again and even walked us through the villa again to give us a refresher. She was unfortunately ill the day we left, and although she was a trooper and came out to see us off (it was a rainy day), she probably should have stayed in bed. The housekeeping ladies are very punctual! They were at the door exactly at 10.

Sheri, October

Overall:
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Each day we would make day trips to various hill towns in the Tuscany area and were always anxious to get home to our "home away from home".
Enjoyed Most:
It was extremely well-equipped and was such a comfortable and peaceful place to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
Surrounding Area:
Scenery and tranquility.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was the nearest town but definitely not in walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Due to the fact that these two properties were so well equipped, the things which were suggested to bring were unnecessary.
Directions:
We used GPS.
Check In Out:
Extremely smooth, taking very little time.

Mary, September

Overall:
Our overall stay was above and beyond everything I expected. It could not have been more perfect.
Enjoyed Most:
The layout was very roomy and comfortable. The house was full of amenities and had everything we needed to make us feel right at home.
Surrounding Area:
The serene, calming views that were endless. Yet, it was a quick ride to get to anywhere we wanted to go.
Nearby Events or Locales:
You need to have a rental car in this location.
Tips or Restaurants:
My suggestion to future renters is to book as many weeks as you possibly can. You will not want to leave.
Directions:
We used a GPS at all times. You really need it. We bought it at home and downloaded the Italian maps. It's much more economical than renting it.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth was very accommodating at all times. She made the check in/check out process easy.

Valerie, August

Overall:
Very enjoyable.
Enjoyed Most:
The views and location.
Enjoyed Least:
It was very hot and on two occasions we had to share the pool with some of the owner's family members. We knew the pool was shared, but next time, we will probably take the house that has its own pool.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo--it's within short driving distance.
Directions:
Directions were fine.

Don, June

Overall:
Great views and within driving to any place we wanted to go. Elizabeth is a gracious and helpful host. Beautiful grounds and the villa exceeded our expectations .
Enjoyed Most:
Friendly and helpful people. It felt homey.
Enjoyed Least:
Sometimes the neighbor's dogs barked at night.
Surrounding Area:
All the hills with olive groves and vineyards. Certaldo is an old town with friendly people. Our driver, Marco, was great and made our trips to tourist areas much easier.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is the closest town; you could walk, but it is safer to drive due to narrow roads.
Tips or Restaurants:
You don't need to bring anything to the villa. Everything was there. If you need something ask Elizabeth and she will find it. The pizza in Certaldo was great.

Sheila, June

Overall:
We loved our villa! After a day of touring the Tuscan countryside it was a joy to come home!
Enjoyed Most:
The amenities and the view. We spent many pleasurable hours sitting on our loggia taking it in. The whole place was gorgeous!
Enjoyed Least:
There was only one thing - the mattresses - they were firmer than we would have liked!
Surrounding Area:
We loved getting in our car and touring around the Chianti hills, visiting small vineyards and walking around the numerous walled cities. We especially enjoyed Certaldo Alto, where we had a cooking class and bought beautiful pottery.
Nearby Events or Locales:
There were no towns within walking distance. However Siano was somewhat nearby with a very good restaurant.
Tips or Restaurants:
We would highly recommend Giueppina's cooking class and working on her farm with a wine talk from her son Luca. We also had Simone (another son) come and cook us a meal, and all three were highlights! We also loved Vertine and the little restaurant there.
Directions:
We got a GPS through Europecar; we called her "Smartypants" and couldn't have managed without her.
Check In Out:
Both were very smooth, cordial, and easy!

Rick, June

Overall:
It was a beautiful place to use as a home base. We liked to relax by the pool and read on the beautiful patio. The experience was truly unforgettable.
Enjoyed Most:
So many things. The history, the interior design, the comfortable living areas, but especially the incredible view of the nearby valley. We thought our hostess, Elizabeth, could not be more gracious or friendly. We really enjoyed her. She was always kind and helpful.
Enjoyed Least:
There never seemed to be enough hot water, but we Americans are spoiled with our long showers.
Surrounding Area:
Each little town we went through was friendly and warm. We didn't spend as much time in Certaldo as we wanted to but really loved Certaldo Alto. We saw Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Siena and the countryside near the villa.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was the nearest small town.
Tips or Restaurants:
Elizabeth had everything we needed at the house. We did bring our own pillows and were happy we did. The mattresses are firm and the pillows in Europe were not very comfortable, if you are particular about that sort of thing. The sheets, however, were heavenly.
Directions:
We did have a GPS but the driveway is a little hidden and we found most things in Italy are not well marked. We passed it and had to circle back to find it. The directions were accurate but still a little difficult to find.
Check In Out:
We were happy there and would definitely return and recommend to future travelers that Villa Certaldo is a gem. We had been gone for nearly three weeks and although we were ready to be home, we truly hated to leave.

Laura, May

Overall:
The six of us had a wonderful time at the villa. It was everything that was mentioned on the RentVillas site and so much more. Elizabeth was a gracious hostess and was there whenever we needed her. The property was beautiful and the villa itself was a dream come true for all of us.
Enjoyed Most:
The view from our villa was exquisite. The spacious rooms and the lovely décor were wonderful.
Enjoyed Least:
We did discuss the directions with Elizabeth. There is a new road which wasn't on the directions and it was a little confusing finding the villa at first. But once we had it down there wasn't a problem.
Surrounding Area:
The area was a wonder for the eyes! The rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves, and other villas were breathtaking. Tuscany is a place that can be revisited time and again. We want to plant cypress trees and lemon trees back home just to remind us of the beauty we experienced.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo wasn't too far. Would not recommend walking there because of the narrow and winding roads.
Tips or Restaurants:
Future renters, just enjoy everything it has to offer! Elizabeth has lists of good restaurants.
Directions:
We had a GPS.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth was there waiting for us and always made sure everything was up to standards.

Anthony, April

Overall:
We had an absolutely beautiful vacation in Tuscany.
Enjoyed Most:
The villa was absolutely beautiful, and it was nicer and larger than we expected. Elizabeth was a wonderful hostess.
Enjoyed Least:
Really cannot think of anything that we did not like.
Surrounding Area:
The day trips to Florence, Siena, Pisa, and San Gimignano.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano is the nearest small village; we could walk to a pizzeria. Wanted to walk to Certaldo but we were unsure about walking along the road.
Tips or Restaurants:
The only items that we did not have were hand and bath soap. We picked some up at the Pam. Went to the Farmer's Market in Certaldo on Wednesday or Thursday, bought some cheese, shrimp, artichokes and cooked our own dinner back at the villa.
Directions:
We should have rented a GPS.

Kim, November

Overall:
A wonderful and memorable experience.
Enjoyed Most:
The view and quiet. The history of the property was intriguing.
Enjoyed Least:
The wine bottle opener was nowhere to be found. I think the previous residents may have mistakenly taken it with them, but we were able to get another from Elizabeth without a problem.
Surrounding Area:
The view and simplicty of the hunters and farmers.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Certaldo alto has many good restaurants with a small town feel.

Ron, October

Overall:
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful villa.
Enjoyed Most:
We mostly liked the spaciousness of the rooms and the view surrounding the villa.
Enjoyed Least:
Even with great directions to find the villa, it was still difficult to find our way after sunset.
Surrounding Area:
We enjoyed the quiet view of the vineyards from our balcony along with the neighbouring hills.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town of Certaldo was about 5 km away. There was another smaller one named Sciano which was only 2 km away.
Tips or Restaurants:
Make sure to have a good map of the surrounding towns to visit. Bring a good camera with a good zoom for distant photos.
Directions:
The directions were well-detailed. Being off the main roads, it was still difficult to find at night. We had difficulty find the house number with our headlights.
Check In Out:
The owner was readily available for check in and check out.

Maurice, October

Overall:
Lovely setting. Town convenient for travel. Owner very helpful.
Enjoyed Most:
View from the living space is beautiful.
Surrounding Area:
Visiting all the hilltop towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is a few miles away.
Tips or Restaurants:
La Galleria in Poggibonsi is excellent but hard to find. Use your GPS! I believe that it is Zagat-rated. There is no menu. They simply ask if you want meat or fish. It was FANTASTIC!!!

Margaret, September

Overall:
Wonderfully pleasant and hosts were very accommodating with answering questions, particularly regarding day trips to nearby towns.
Enjoyed Most:
The sweeping views, the history of the property, and the swimming pool!
Enjoyed Least:
Not air-conditioned! However, we were there for the hottest week in 50 years and I'm sure that was an exception. Ceiling fans helped a lot as did the thick masonry. My downstairs bedroom remained the coolest of the three, so I was always comfortable.
Surrounding Area:
The accessibility to nearby Tuscan areas that we were interested in seeing, such as Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, and Lucca. Every drive was picturesque.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo. No, not within walking distance--but then I need a wheelchair to go any normal distance. I don't think my family ever tried to walk into town--heat plus distance being prohibiting factors.
Tips or Restaurants:
All the resaurants were good and Elizabeth has a wealth of information regarding them as well as locations and whether reservations are required. The house was very well-appointed and only some kitchen supplies were needed such as dish soap.
Directions:
GPS and directions were accurate. We liked the landmarks that were indicated to show we were going in the right direction.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth was kind enough to give us her garage parking space to keep access to the villa on one level for me since I don't navigate stairs very well. The usual guest parking would have required some steps. I would recommend this villa for any handicapped person as the downstairs bedroom and bath were wheelchair friendly.

Diane, August

Overall:
It was a great property. The house was beautiful with gorgeous views.
Enjoyed Most:
The property owner was fabulous and bent over backwards to assist when she could. The train station was nearby (in Certaldo) and proved to be perfect for our day outings.
Enjoyed Least:
Low, hard beds (mattresses on slates). However, no one suffered back issues as a result.

Sandra, August

Overall:
We had a wonderful time and could not have asked for a better view or better accommodations.
Enjoyed Most:
The views were fabulous. Bedrooms are a great size.
Enjoyed Least:
The lack of lighting going up to our villa.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is the nearest town and is not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
The villas was well equipped and Elizabeth has a wonderful list of restaurants to visit.
Directions:
We did not use a GPS. Directions were very good.

Christi, May

Overall:
Wonderful! All the information on the RentVillas web site was accurate. The best thing about the villa is that it was located in such a great area...away from all the big cities, but near lots of smaller towns. There was easy access by train to the larger ones.
Enjoyed Most:
The peace, quiet, and typical Tuscan scenery from the outdoor patio. We spent every evening eating, sipping wine, and reviewing our day.
Surrounding Area:
The beauty.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo, new and Alto, (old) good restaurants. A car is the best way to travel here.
Tips or Restaurants:
If you are planning to cook a lot while you are her, bring your favorite American spices. Elizabeth has stocked the kitchen with most of the traditional Italian ones. The kitchen had every piece of cooking equipment necessary, and the dishes to serve were excellent.
Directions:
We had a GPS and we did get the coordinates, but because we are cautious travelers we followed Elizabeth's written directions, too. Follow Elizabeth's written directions. Sometimes "Betty" our GPS boss got the hiccups.....
Check In Out:
Elizabeth explained everything on our arrival, fixed our TV, and said, "I am available anytime..just call..or come next door" The evening before we left she dropped off the return of our security deposit without us asking.

Bonnie, May

Overall:
Fantastic! We loved every minute. Elizabeth is the best!
Enjoyed Most:
Peacefulness, beauty of the surroundings, Elizabeth's hospitality.
Enjoyed Least:
We found the patio to be small; we gathered there many times a day.
Surrounding Area:
The history, the people, and the beauty.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo Tips or Restaurants:
We followed Elizabeth's suggestions; all her recommendations were right on (except for Wilma's - we never found them open, but told Elizabeth about it and she said she was going to look into that.)
Directions:
We had a GPS.

Nate, May

Overall:
Wonderful experience. The owner was very helpful and available for all and any questions.
Enjoyed Most:
Location.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was not within walking distance from the villa, but by car it was only about two or three miles.
Tips or Restaurants:
The home was equipped with all modern conveniences. Just bring your toothbrush!
Directions:
We used GPS; it would be difficult to locate the property without it.

Peter, November

Overall:
The Tuscany area is beautiful. We visited several areas at the direction of our driver and were not disappointed.
Enjoyed Most:
We were looking for a country experience and it certainly lived up to that.
Enjoyed Least:
The front bedroom is right next to the chiminey and was smokey if there was a fire in the fireplace in the living room. The owners live right next door and sometimes it was noisy at night. Owners had dogs that barked at night sometimes.
Surrounding Area:
The countryside is beautiful and we were able to walk some as the weather was great.
Tips or Restaurants:
Definitely will have to hire a driver or rent a car. We hired a driver which we think is the best way.

Lanny, October

Overall:
Fabulous!
Enjoyed Most:
Deck, view, appliances that are easy to use, great beds, lovely towels, and Elizabeth, the owner.
Enjoyed Least:
Bathroom lighting.
Surrounding Area:
Cetaldo Alto, Certaldo, San Gimignano, and Siena are all nearby.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is the nearest town but is not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Be sure to arrive before dark. Directions are perfect but would be hard to follow after dark. We loved the restaurants in Certaldo Alto. Grocery shopping is a pleasure and Elizbeth has great suggestions for bakery and deli.
Directions:
Didn't have GPS - no problems.

Donna, October

Overall:
Excellent. We will surely pass the referral onto other friends with confidence. Very gracious host and hostess.
Enjoyed Most:
Bedrooms and bathrooms and living room and outside deck overlooking the countryside. It was well stocked and much attention to detail especially in comparison to other rentals.
Enjoyed Least:
The table and chairs by the pool could be improved. Not a big deal, however!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Chiano is the nearest town; it is not really walkable.

Marie, October

Overall:
It was wonderful.
Enjoyed Most:
The view of vineyards from the propery deck was outstanding. We enjoyed our meals there nearly every day.
Enjoyed Least:
The only negative issue was that the stove/oven did not start properly. However, Elizabeth, the owner, was prompt in trying to resolve the problem.
Surrounding Area:
The view, and the location was good for access to the rail and road system.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town is Certaldo but it is not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
The property included everything, including laundry detergent, dish soap, WiFi, etc. We were a group of 6. The biggest surprise was discovering Certaldo Alto. Take a funicular from the downtown area to the old town. It has restaurants and bars as well as a lovely view.
Directions:
The directions were a bit murky at the end as they didn't describe the landmarks in the correct order. We did have a GPS, but it didn't recognize the address provided.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth was very welcoming and she oriented us to the property thoroughly.

Alan, September

Overall:
Overall, we were just thrilled to be able to stay at such a lovely villa. The owner was so welcoming and yet respected our privacy.
Enjoyed Most:
The views were absolutely stunning. We loved the covered porch in the back of the property. It was perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine. The overall size of the villa was also excellent from the bedrooms to the living room to the kitchen.
Enjoyed Least:
The owners dogs liked to bark around 3:00 AM just about every morning.
Surrounding Area:
The beautiful rolling hills dotted with vineyards. The ease of getting to many small local towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano. Certaldo is also nearby but a little bigger. It's more of a bike ride or drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
Pizzeria Maroni and Il Pirata
Directions:
We had a GPS and coordinates; it would have been much more difficult without these.

Steve, September

Overall:
It was fabulous. The villa was even better than we had hoped.
Enjoyed Most:
Hard to say because it was so nice. I guess we really appreciated the spaciousness as there were 7 adults and we all felt like we had plenty of room. The bedrooms were huge, the bathrooms magnificent. The owners really thought of every detail to include in a great book that explained many of the appliances, as well as some of the furnishings. The pool was another favorite since it was extremely hot and we spent time there almost every day.
Enjoyed Least:
Could use better lighting coming up the stairs from the parking spaces as it was difficult to see at night.
Surrounding Area:
Proximity to things, such as towns we wanted to visit like Siena, San Gimignano, Florence, plus good restaurants and the grocery store.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano is the nearest town and you could probably walk. Certaldo is also nearby but not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Pizzeria Maroni in Sciano. It was great, pizza and pasta, very casual, but both food and service were fabulous. Il Castello in Certaldo--found it in AAA guidebook and it was lovely. We went there on our last night, the food was great, the service was good and we were able to sit outside in the lovely courtyard. Casa Tua in Certaldo, a casual place with seating outside on the main street. The food and service were fabulous. Our waiter was great, dancing with my nephew in the street - just great! No suggestions for things to bring, the place is very well set up. Would emphasize the Pam as a good place to shop.
Check In Out:
We managed quite well because the house book provided was excellent. Check out was simple; they refunded our security deposit with no problems.

Karen, August

Overall:
Moving into Villa Certaldo was marked by a warm welcome from our hosts, ohhh's and ahhh's from each of us as we moved from room to room, and the immediate sense that we were "home." That feeling only grew and was enhanced as, each day, Aldinolfo (whom we called the Count) checked in on us, garden kittens entertained us, and we swam in the luxurious pool. Leaving to visit San Gimignano and Volterra was not easy since staying "home" was just so inviting. Hiking in the "preserve", shopping daily at the market , cooking and eating together on the terrance, eating at excellent Certaldo restaurants, and being "natives" was invigorating. At the market and in the restaurants people seemed to love exchanging with us. Certainly, we loved exchanging with them. Villa Certaldo is a glorious property, owned by people who know how to make one feel comfortable, welcome, and cared for.
Enjoyed Most:
The terrace overlooking the Tuscan vista, the pool, the comfortable beds, the large and well equipped marble bathrooms, the quiet in the house, the well equipped laundry, the beautiful antiques coupled with intriguing art work--we loved it all. Directions for operating all appliances were clear; tips on market days, places to visit, and how to seek help were also well organized and clear. The kitchen, bathrooms and modern conveniences, including internet access and DVD's, were all excellent. We had packed according to RentVillas' suggestions for what to bring but needed nothing except a peppermill, which we bought and donated to the kitchen. We made cappuccino every morning, cooked eloquent meals, and used our iPad constantly.
Enjoyed Least:
The proximity to the neighboring villa rental, Villa Sella, was problematic. For two days, the noise from the family and guests was utterly annoying. Smoke from their barbecue made it impossible for us to stay on the terrace--and those evenings were hot and uncomfortable inside.
Surrounding Area:
Our visits to Volterra and San Gimignano were well worth the effort to leave the peace of the villa and travel out of Certaldo. The markets and local restaurants were our favorites.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is very near. You need a car at this Villa.
Tips or Restaurants:
We used Elizabeth's restaurant list, which brought us to only excellent restaurants. Her welcoming letter and folder of "helpful hints" served us well. Elizabeth was in the US due to the death of her father. Unfortunately, we did not meet her. But her husband was an exquisite gentleman and Paulina, the housekeeper, took great care of us.
Directions:
A bit complicated, though as long as you read the directions closely and follow them exactly, they are excellent.
Check In Out:
It was smooth and very easy.

Maureen, July

Overall:
This was a fantastic experience. I would highly recommend Villa Certaldo to my friends or anyone who asked.
Enjoyed Most:
The property was amazing, the pool was a must and much used by us. What I liked best about the property was the view, second to none. Heaven.
Enjoyed Least:
Just one small complaint - the coffee maker needs to be replaced for a bigger, more modern one. There were six of us and we all wanted coffee first thing in the mornings but had to wait patiently for the little plastic coffee maker to do it's magic.
Surrounding Area:
Everything. Very pretty, lush, and green, the most beautiful trees, lots of nice lanes to walk. Lots of views to photograph.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Nearest town was Certaldo. No, you couldn't have walked there.
Tips or Restaurants:
Don't need to take towels of any kind, including beach towels, as they are provided. Buy mosquito coils for the balcony in the evenings--they really do work. The best restaurants we found were in Certaldo Alto, the old town on the hill above Certaldo.
Directions:
Our GPS could not calculate for some reason. We used the directions in the voucher we received from RentVillas and they got us there just fine.

Norma, July

Overall:
Surpassing the brilliant location, historical beauty, immaculate, luxurious and spacious home, was the far reaching hospitality provided by Elizabeth. Local and regional information including maps were greatly appreciated. Star rating for this villa exceeds the limit!
Enjoyed Most:
The view, the villa design and history, the provided information/maps, and the helpful hospitality of our property manager, Elizabeth
Enjoyed Least:
Dogs barking at night sometimes kept us awake.
Surrounding Area:
We liked being able to hop on the provided bikes and ride into Certaldo. It's a great central location to make home base in order to drive to nearby sites. Nice walking paths nearby, and the views surrounding the villa were breathtaking!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo. Yes, but nicer on bikes!
Tips or Restaurants:
Ask for directions to the villa from Florence. Directions were provided from Rome, but had difficulty finding the villa. Elizabeth was gracious enough to come and find us so we could follow her back. Also, a GPS in your rental car is a must!
Directions:
Needed directions from Rome

Terry, June

Overall:
We had a fantastic experience--both at the house and on excursions in the region.
Enjoyed Most:
Fantastic view from the veranda. Very nicely decorated house. One major reason we chose it was that it had three almost equal-sized bedrooms--important when three couples are traveling together. Elizabeth was the most charming, delightful, and helpful hostess. Went beyond call of duty when we had parking tickets which needed to get paid the day we left--and she went in the morning to the Post Office to do so for us! Forever grateful!
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing.
Surrounding Area:
The landscape is, of course, beautiful--and can be enjoyed every day from the veranda in particular. We did not walk or drive much in the area otherwise--drove mostly to near and far towns like Sienna, Assisi, Cortona, etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Elizabeth has a list of nearby restaurants, and we went to those, and also shopped for groceries in the places listed. All very close-by and convenient.
Tips or Restaurants:
Not much you need to bring since almost everything is already in the kitchen including three coffeee/spresso makers of various kinds.
Directions:
Used GPS, but people must be aware that there are three different coordination systems for GPS. Our friends, who came separately in two differerent cars, did not know this and had not set input for the right coordinate system. Accordingly, their GPSs pointed to slightly different locations and they had a harder time finding the property. Overall, a GPS is INDISPENSIBLE in Italy!!!!

Urban, June

Overall:
Wonderful experience!
Enjoyed Most:
The location, the view from the house, and Elizabeth's hospitality.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing, it was wonderful
Surrounding Area:
We loved being close to the farms where you could sample olive oil and wine.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano was the nearest town and it was not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Pizzeria Maroni in Sciano was a great choice for pizza and pasta.
Directions:
We did use a GPS but this was our second stay at the villa so we were familiar with the area.

Elaine, May

Overall:
It was a wonderful experience. The villa is beautiful, with a fantastic view, a great place to hang out as well as a base for day trips around the countryside.
Enjoyed Most:
We have never stayed in a rental property before that was so well equipped. As soon as we thought of something we needed, we would find it, as well as many things we hadn't even thought of like coolers and blue ice packs in the freezer, for bringing home prosciutto and cheese! Elizabeth was great, friendly and always ready to help with anything. And the view...was just fantastic!
Enjoyed Least:
We didn't realize that there is another rental villa right next door, as in really close. When we sat outside and the neighbours sat outside, it was a bit intrusive. Also, that villa has a pool, so we got to hear lots of kid swimming noises as well. Nothing obnoxious, but when we rented a villa we were assuming more of an isolated stand-alone house.
Surrounding Area:
Certaldo is a great town, not touristy at all--so no giant tour buses or souvenir stands--but very friendly, and with everything we needed. Certaldo Alto is a scenic little medieval village on the hill with great restaurants. It is also really easy to get to many other places, including both Florence and Siena.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was the nearest town, not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
The villa is very well equipped with everything we could think of, although admittedly we didn't try any sophisticated cooking. The best restaurants in the area are in Certaldo Alto. We recommend going truffle hunting, or taking cooking lessons, from Giuseppina and her husband Luigi.
Directions:
The instructions to the property are actually not bad at all once we followed them--although they assume that you are coming from the south. It would be helpful if there was a version for those coming from the north, as well. Note that the directions take you to the closed gates in front of the property next door where Elizabeth lives, with no indication of how to get anyone's attention.
Check In Out:
Once we got Elizabeth's attention, she was was great, and we got checked in with no problems.

Tristan, May

Overall:
Everything about Villa Cetaldo was excellent. Elizabeth was a fantastic hostess. She has thought of every little detail to make her guests stay a relaxing and wonderful experience.
Enjoyed Most:
The view and location are spectacular.
Surrounding Area:
Certaldo is only 4 km away and provides many excellent restaurants. Day trips by train from the Certaldo station are quite easy. The location was also very central to drive to Siena, San Gimignano, the Chianti region, Pisa and Florence.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is only 4 km. A quick drive but not really within walking distance. Elizabeth provided a list of local restaurants and grocers that were near the villa.

Jill, May

Overall:
Poetic, joyful, enriching, fun, relaxing, inspiring, perfect! Full of wine, good friends, adventures, food, and great memories.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything. From the hostess, Elizabeth to the view, the house, the neighborhood, the location, the rooms, the cats on the porch, the lemons in the yard, the internet connection, the complete feeling that we were in a house that was ours for a week and whatever we needed or had concerns about would be addressed and that it was a joy to have us there.
Enjoyed Least:
We had to leave. There is nothing I did not like about this fantastic property. The history and the improvements made from the "olden days" were fabulous.
Surrounding Area:
Everything was close. The town of Certaldo was great. Certaldo Alto was a great last day adventure. The drives to our day trips were just right.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The drive to Certaldo for food and groceries and Mass was 15 minutes away. Just right
Tips or Restaurants:
I would suggest you rent this villa. Elizabeth has done a superb job of leaving information about the house, how to work things, where to visit, restaurants, the history of this old villa, which is fantastic. She is English speaking and very, very nice. We never felt asking her any questions was an imposition. I suggest you stay more then one week!
Directions:
We had downloaded the Italy maps and used GPS for everything. Most helpful. The directions and the coordinates.
Check In Out:
We called ahead to let her know when we would arrive, within a half hour. She was most thankful for that. We had to leave very early on Saturday and checked out the night before, no problem. No stress on either end.

Beth, April

Overall:
Unforgetable.
Enjoyed Most:
The view, the setting, quiet atmosphere, unbelievable sunrises and sunsets!
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing.
Surrounding Area:
Views...
Tips or Restaurants:
The house has everything you need and more! La Peruca in San Gimignan.o
Directions:
You definitely need GPS.
Check In Out:
We were able to check in the morning, as we just moved from another villa where we needed to check out before 10:00 am.

Daniela, April

Overall:
Amazing! The villa was spacious, homey, clean and just plain beautiful. I felt right at home from the first night. We had Giusepina and her son come in and cook my birthday dinner and oh my goodness!!!! I wish I would have booked them more nights! I DID NOT WANT TO COME BACK!! My entire stay was amazing!
Enjoyed Most:
I loved the view and the peacefulness. It was incredible!
Enjoyed Least:
There was absolutely nothing to dislike about this place!
Surrounding Area:
We went for a few runs and bike rides. I loved the clean air, sun, and the beauty of the country side. I felt like I was in a movie. It seemed to beautiful to be real.
Nearby Events or Locales:
There was a small town about 2 kilometers away. It was cute. Certaldo was about 8 kilometers away and had a nice grocery store, COOP, plus many small shops to get fresh and delicious foods. We went to the gelateria every time we hit the town and there is a great little bakery on the same street. They both are a must!
Tips or Restaurants:
Elizabeth has thought of everything! And if it is not in the villa, give her a call on the cell phone she provides for you and she will either get it for you or help you get it. She makes you feel so at home. I truly did not want to leave. That being said.... I WILL GO BACK!!!!
Directions:
A GPS is a must. The coordinates are provided and they are needed to find the property. It is a bit hidden away but that is one of its best features.

Aida, April

Overall:
We thoroughly our stay at the Villa Certaldo. The mornings started with the mist rising from the valley. Although the weather was chilly in late October, the fire in the fireplace kept us toasty after a day of seeing the sights. Volterra, Siena, Firenze and the town of Certaldo itself. We found two grocery stores along with smaller shops. The villa itself was comfortable, roomy and the kitchen well equipped.
Enjoyed Most:
The peace and quiet in the surroundings after the bustle of the towns we visited. The Owner was very accommodating, helpful and cheery.
Enjoyed Least:
Our guests from Indonesia were a little too chilly, but survived.
Surrounding Area:
There were so many interesting places to visit. We wished we had taken two weeks so we could explore more.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Having our own car made Certaldo easy to reach and a small restaurant in the little town down the road.
Tips or Restaurants:
We never found any good restaurants in the vicinity because 7:30 is when they open for dinner and we always wanted to be at home in the evening to cuddle up with the fire. There is a nice pizzeria close by which is very friendly and the food is decent.
Directions:
Our car has a GPS which made finding the villa very easy. Without it, it would have been difficult.
Check In Out:
We arrived early, but the staff was very accommodating and had already cleaned, so they let us in.

Marianne, October

Overall:
Absolutely the very best experience of our lifetime. We were greeted by our very warm and gracious hostess of the villa, Elizabeth. The villa should be described as not only elegant, but warm and inviting. Elizabeth has thought of every detail a guest could possibly need.
Enjoyed Most:
The views! Unbelievable! We spent every available moment out on the loggia to eat, drink and just take in the beauty. It was almost surreal! Our hostess! Elizabeth was fantastic - helpful, fun, knowledgeable about the history of her villa oh, by the way -her wonderful, humble husband is a descendant of the Medici family. She was always available 24/7 via her cell if we needed her for anything. A true delight. One gets immediately attached to her - I really miss her and her family.
Enjoyed Least:
The water. Big deal (I'm being sarcastic). It was very clean - just full of minerals that we are not use to tasting.
Surrounding Area:
The people! We had so many experiences meeting strangers that embraced us as if we were family or close friends. We had heard that the people were like this, but to experience it is another story. Lovely, lovely human beings.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was the nearest small town.
Tips or Restaurants:
Just before going to Italy, check the actual area you are going for its projected weather. We looked only at Florence and the difference in the temperature was significant. We were really cold, as there was as much as a 10 degree difference. Also, the restaurant, Wilhmas, was the very best in the whole 2 weeks we were there. All homemade at the moment you arrive. We watched the family as they made the pasta we ate. Fabulous!
Directions:
We used our trusty maps that required us to make 2 u-turns. It was just a fun adventure. No one got uptight.
Check In Out:
We were trusted to leave at a prescribed time as the owners had to go to Austria and not available to see us leave. What a compliment, although, we would have preferred to see them one more time before we left. How often is the "honor system" used in a business environment in the states?

Penny, October

Overall:
we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Villa Certaldo. Elizabeth was an absolute delight and such a help when it came to the walk through and explanation of everything. I have rented two other homes in the area and this was by far the best. Our stay in the Villa will have lasting memories for years and I would not hesitate to recommend the villa for anyone staying in the Tuscan area, including friends of ours who plan to go over within the next year or so. It was a pleasure dealing the Rent Villas and your professionalism was most appreciated. Thanks again for all your help!
Enjoyed Most:
Much thought was given to guests' comfort and the amenities were top-notch. Fabulous large bedrooms and bathrooms, especially for Europe which is not always the case. Great working kitchen as well. The views were spectacular and the sound of the church bells throughout the Tuscan Hills so peaceful.
Tips or Restaurants:
Old Certaldo was absolutely charming and we found a wonderful ceramic workshop where we bought some beautiful plates, etc. The Enoteca next door to the workshop had a very helpful owner who introduced us to some of the best sheep's cheese we've ever had.

Barbara, October

Overall:
The villa and surrounding area were breathtaking and far exceeded our very high expectations. Elizabeth was so amazing, and we loved her! She took very good care of us and that meant so much to me.
Enjoyed Most:
It would be impossible to say, as everything was perfect. We absolutely loved relaxing on the terrace at the end of the day, looking out over the very beautiful countryside. It was so quiet in the evenings, and the faint sounds of nature lulled us into a wonderfully tranquil frame of mind. The kitchen was fabulous, and the bedrooms and bathrooms were so spacious and comfortable. I had looked at over 600 villas when planning this trip, and Villa Certaldo came out on top just from my research results. Experiencing it in person was even better, and again, far exceeded our expectations.
Enjoyed Least:
Absolutely nothing! It was all so perfect.
Surrounding Area:
Everything! Around every bend in the road and from the tops of every hill, the views were indescribable. It's impossible to imagine the true beauty prior to actually seeing it. One MUST see it in person!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was the nearest small town and not within walking distance. That was never a problem for us, however, as we had a car, and we loved being out in the countryside away from town.
Tips or Restaurants:
We did have a GPS, which was invaluable. We also brought zip-lock bags for leftovers, as we cooked many meals at the villa. The bags came in very handy. The kitchen was so cozy, and we all enjoyed spending time there together while one or the other of us did the cooking.
Directions:
GPS coordinates were perfect however, so were Elizabeth's and rentvilla's driving directions.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth made this process very quick and easy.

Shellie, October

Overall:
Spectacular!
Enjoyed Most:
The view, and the undeniable good will of our hosts!
Enjoyed Least:
Barking dogs heard from across the valley.
Surrounding Area:
The view, the view, the view. That, and the glorious animal preserve right across the road.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was not within walking distance, but a very short drive. Also a pizza and gelato place even closer.
Directions:
GPS a must!

Janet, August

Overall:
We would recommend this beautiful villa to others wishing to have a comfortable base for exploring Tuscany. The villa itself was spacious, well-furnished, and the location was excellent for sightseeing. Our hostess Elizabeth was gracious and eager to help us. Her son, Henry, 10 years old, joined us for pool time on a few occasions and he taught us some Italian words and pool games.
Enjoyed Most:
The kitchen was well equipped and we enjoyed the large swimming pool that was available for our use. The views from the villa out onto the adjacent vineyard were beautiful. One morning we awoke to a beautiful Tuscan sunrise, and looked out to see a number of hot air balloons drifting across the nearby fields - what a sight! The internet connectivity at the villa was good although a bit slow, but that is to be expected. The villa has a computer with internet and printer-scanner that we used, and it also has a wireless access point that we were able to use with the computer we brought with us. Cellular signals at the villa were strong.
Enjoyed Least:
The villa itself was a bit difficult to find. This was because we had directions to the villa only from one direction - and we were coming from a different direction. When we had trouble, we called the property owner and she drove a few miles to meet us and usher us in.
Surrounding Area:
From this base we found it easy to make day-trips to Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, and of course the town of Certaldo which was just down the road. All of these were fantastic places to visit, and getting there via our rental car or local train was simple.
Tips or Restaurants:
Other reviews had warned us of abundant mosquitoes but we found the problem to be small. We got a few bites but nothing serious. The restaurants in Certaldo were somewhat limited, but certainly enough options for our one-week stay. We particularly enjoyed shopping at the local stores and then cooking for ourselves. The local vegetables, especially tomatoes, were excellent quality. We also found some great fresh fruit by visiting Certaldo's open-air market. We had both a cooking lesson, and an at-home dinner, prepared by local cooking instructor Giuseppina and would recommend her to others. Her cooking classes are held in her studio in Certaldo Alto, within the ancient hill town fort that overlooks the river valley - just a fantastic venue!

Karla, July

Overall:
It was fantastic. Elizabeth has everything you will need for a fantastic stay.
Enjoyed Most:
The kitchen was unbelievable. So much space and everything you wanted was there!
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing
Surrounding Area:
The villa is so close to a lot of little villages and only 15 mins. to the Florence - Siena highway.
Tips or Restaurants:
Certaldo Alto has 2 great restaurants, San Gimignano is great too, just a little further away.
Directions:
We used the written directions with no problem.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth informed us of the workings of the villa and the surrounding area at check-in and the day before check out she came by to see how we had enjoyed our stay.

Deborah, June

Overall:
Fantastic. We had a wonderful time, beautiful property, owner very helpful, happy to do anything for us. Having dinner prepared on our first night there was wonderful and we did it again later in the week.
Enjoyed Most:
The villa itself was just glorious, welcoming and very comfortable for three couples. Covered porch with table for 6 perfect for any rainy times. The location to get to so many hill towns is a real plus.
Enjoyed Least:
That it wasn't walkable to a town. BUT we wouldn't have had the peaceful countryside to look at if it were closer to a town.
Surrounding Area:
We were so close to so many ancient towns to enjoy within an easy ride.
Tips or Restaurants:
We were happy we brought a few plastic bags for the kitchen, but there was nothing that the villa needed.
Directions:
We did not use a GPS and did fine without it

Susan, May

Overall:
There are very few moments in life that anyone can describe as magical but both of us use "magical experience" to describe Villa Certaldo. From the property vistas to the well appointed kitchen and Elizabeth's welcoming presence our experience will be treasured for a lifetime.
Enjoyed Most:
The classic Tuscan vistas one expects to find were carefully framed to be enjoyed inside or out. The care and historic pride visible in every architectural and interior design detail. The warm and welcoming hospitality offered by Elizabeth and her extended family.
Enjoyed Least:
The property exceeded every expectation.
Surrounding Area:
The location of the property allows for daily jaunts through Chianti country to the west, the Italian Riveria to the east, Florence to the north and Siena to the south. However within 30 minutes are the charming ancient towns of Certaldo Alto, San Gimignano and Monteriggioni.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano is the nearest town and while within close walking distance, Certaldo, 10 minutes via car, is where one shops and finds "living like a local".
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring your spirit of adventure, your imagination and leave behind our American pace of life--enjoy La Dolce Vita because it is here for the taking!
Directions:
We used a GPS and it was invaluable. Even though we had it we missed the turn To Villa Certaldo coming out of Sciano---as soon as you see the leaving Sciano sign - red cross through the word Sciano - take the first right to Villa Certaldo.

Kathleen, October

Overall:
The experience was more than we expected. It provided easy access to all of the points of interest for daily trips.
Enjoyed Most:
The view and the accommodations.
Enjoyed Least:

Surrounding Area:
The great restaurants and how friendly everyone was to us.
Tips or Restaurants:
We brought our GPS with the European map - very helpful going to each town and finding our way back to the Villa. Our host, Elizabeth, gave us a list of restaurant to try they were all excellent.
Directions:
Yes we used GPS and it worked well.

Glenn, October

Overall:
Fabulous the property was perfect. The owner very helpful but remained unseen but available should we need something, it met all my expectations of what living in Tuscany is all about.
Enjoyed Most:
The style and lay out of the villa, the views, the setting was fantastic. We really felt like we lived in Tuscany.
Enjoyed Least:
Not a thing.
Surrounding Area:
A quaint small town was just what we were looking for. The people were so nice and welcoming. There are local vineyards and olive producers right at your door step practically. A short hop to the grocer, bakery and restaurants.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Not walking distance but a very short ride to Certaldo.
Tips or Restaurants:
The list of restaurants provided by the owner were excellent suggestions, flawless.
Directions:
We used a GPS however we arrived after dark which even with a GPS presented challenges, but we called the owners and she met us and guided us to the property. The next day in the daylight we realized it was so easy.
Check In Out:
Very easy process.

Linda, October

Overall:
Our overall experience was beautiful. The villa was just as it was pictured on the website--the views were magnificent and the accommodations very comfortable and up-to-date. Our location was conveniently located to many of the must see towns in the Tuscany area. Elizabeth was a charming and gracious hostess and was so very helpful to us. Overall, it was a very memorable experience.
Enjoyed Most:
The scenery from our Villa was like a Tuscany countryside painting and the convenient location to the town of Certaldo was great. The Villa was in excellent condition with many amenities. It was immaculate. The kitchen had all appliances and every convenience available which we did not expect in Italy.
Enjoyed Least:
The only improvement I can see is if there was more light in the bathrooms for applying make-up. Also if there were written instructions in English for the washer-dryer, we wouldn't have had to bother Elizabeth about them!
Surrounding Area:
As i said before, the scenery was lovely, vineyards so picturesque and serene. There were lovely little towns not to far away. Certaldo and Certaldo Alto were charming. Also, many nice restaurants within 10-15 minutes of the Villa as well as grocery stores.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Nearest town was Certaldo and it was not within walking distance but only 10 minutes from the Villa.
Tips or Restaurants:
Grocery stores are well equipped so don't bring food. Villa is well equipped with soap, towels, toilet tissue, etc. If you run out, Elizabeth will provide extra. I would bring mosquito repellent if it is warm and you like to sit outside a lot. Restaurants: La Casalinga, Certaldo, Pizzeria Maroni for good pizza, quite close to the Villa, Forno Moderno--wonderful bakery. Elizabeth has a list of other restaurants in the area that she recommends.
Directions:
GPS worked fine

Vivian, September

Overall:
Villa Certaldo is such a wonderful place to stay, with warm, helpful hosts, a fascinating history, every amenity one could want and fabulous views of the Tuscan countryside. We were so happy there that we wished we could have stayed longer. Elizabeth, the wife of the owner was so ready to help with anything that we needed and would come at a moment's notice whenever we called.
Enjoyed Most:
We loved how beautifully equipped the villa kitchen was and how conveniently located the villa was to all the points of interest in Tuscany. We were close enough to take day trips to Siena, Volterra, Cortona, Pienza and all points in between. If we had had the time, we could have driven to Cinque Terre, Florence, San Gimignano, Montalcino, Montepulciano Arezzo. It was perfect!
Enjoyed Least:
The lighting in the bathrooms was very dim and the beds were hard.
Surrounding Area:
The views from our terrace were just beautiful and the country road outside the villa was made for walking, pretty, peaceful and quiet with a view of San Gimignano in the distance. There was a very good restaurant called "Wilma" a few kilometers down the road
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was the closest town to Villa Certaldo. It's not withing walking distance, but just a short drive. From the main piazza you can take the funicular up to old Certaldo, an absolutely charming little medieval village. It's a great place for an afternoon wander.
Tips or Restaurants:
Almost everything was provided in the villa. The only things missing were measuring spoons, measuring cups and wash cloths, which we had brought from home. Wilma is a good restaurant for a relaxing Sunday lunch. We loved La Casalinga in Certaldo. Bring your language guide. The menu doesn't have English subtitles, and the staff doesn't "parla inglese". There are two good supermarkets - COOP in Certaldo PAM in nearby Poggibonsi. We felt the PAM was better organized, cleaner and more complete than the COOP.
Directions:
We had a GPS this time and felt that it was extremely helpful. You have to expect to get lost a few times when you are driving in Italy, but the directions were very good and we arrived safe and sound.

Sandra, September

Overall:
Terrific from beginning to end - and everything in between.
Enjoyed Most:
The views, the modern conveniences, the location, in Sciano, very close to Certaldo and walking distance to a 999 year old church. The pool was relaxing after a long day of sightseeing and walking. Both Elizabeth and her husband were there for us if we needed them, and would disappear so we could have our private time. Great balance. Lots of time to relax and unwind. The perfect vacation spot.
Enjoyed Least:
The bees that liked to hang with us at the pool.
Surrounding Area:
The vineyards bursting with deep purple grapes, or green and red grapes the rows of olive trees, lemon and orange trees, the nearby church. The views from all the windows, but especially, the upstairs bedroom overlooking the valley was spectacular. The local pizza place was good, friendly and relaxing. Everyone was friendly and helpful.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is about a 10 minute drive. It was a wonderful place to purchase groceries, and to spend the day. We took the car that brought us up to the old town Certaldo Alto and found dinner at a castle in an outdoor garden, churches, the Praetorian Palace and incredible views.
Tips or Restaurants:
Elizabeth has a list of places nearby to dine, shop, or even buy dinner to take home. There's directions for the two places to shop for groceries. She has beach towels for the pool, a computer, cell phone, washer, dryer, dishwasher, pots and pans, corkscrew, silverware, even some spices, coffee maker, espresso maker, etc. All the restaurants we tried that were on her list were worth going to. There's also a supply of reference books for the Tuscany area, cookbooks, etc. This place has it all. I would suggest bottled water over the tap water which was soft, but that may just be me.
Directions:
We used a Tom Tom and had no problems at all.
Check In Out:
Got there early, but Elizabeth was ready for us and welcomed us with open arms. Check out is a breeze if you keep the place looking good.

Dominic And Carolyn, September

Overall:
The villa was perfect for our family. Beautiful and relaxing property. Elizabeth was wonderful, gracious and helpful.
Enjoyed Most:
The villa felt like home. The views were fantastic. Go to all the restaurants Elizabeth recommends!
Enjoyed Least:
We loved everything.
Surrounding Area:
Close to so many sights. The beauty was all around.
Tips or Restaurants:
The villa has everything! An alarm clock if you desire.
Directions:
The GPS was invaluable. The coordinates to the villa were very helpful.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth was accommodating and always available.

Eileen, September

Overall:
Villa Certaldo was lovely in every way. We thoroughly enjoyed our week at the property, the home is very well maintained, it has large screened windows with shutters and doors that open wide to the night air. The swimming pool was marvelous and a cool respite from sunny, hot touring days.
Enjoyed Most:
We most enjoyed the use of the pool and eating wonderful fresh Tuscan food in our own dining room.
Enjoyed Least:
The beds were not as comfortable as we would have liked.
Surrounding Area:
The area was very scenic, with views of San Gimignano - we could see farmers plowing their fields, we could smell the lovely fresh trees and breezes -- it was very beautiful.
Tips or Restaurants:
We highly recommend hiring the cook, Giuseppina for a private cooking lesson-meal at the villa. She was delightful, the food was delicious and it was a GREAT start to our week. We also thoroughly enjoyed the bread store - ask Elizabeth - and several of the restaurants she recommended. Pisa, Lucca, Siena, Florence are just some of the larger cities to see nearby. There are numerous small towns to see.
Directions:
We did use GPS -- quite helpful. Also calling the property owner before our arrival. She was very helpful, too.

Donna, August

Overall:
Too short of a vacation! It was one of the best and most memorable experiences of my life. I would not only recommend this to any of my friends, but I absolutely plan to come back.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything was perfect, but the views of the Tuscan countryside from the property were my favorite thing. It was so beautiful that it almost seemed fake.
Enjoyed Least:
Having to leave.
Surrounding Area:
Everything was so peaceful and relaxing. The location was perfect for taking day trips to the many small Tuscan towns. Plus there were nice restaurants and grocery stores just a short drive from the property.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was the nearest town and it really isn't within walking distance. It would be much easier to make the short drive and probably safer, since the roads are hilly and have many curves!
Tips or Restaurants:
You really don't need to bring anything. Elizabeth has truly thought of all the things you might need. There are a number of good restaurants in the area. Definitely check out the few restaurants in Certaldo Alto amazing food and views...
Directions:
We did use a GPS and had the coordinates to the property, but the written directions were perfect.

Jessica, August

Overall:
Very happy with the accommodation, the welcome and surrounding area.
Enjoyed Most:
The size of the rooms, the views and the pool!
Enjoyed Least:
The owner's dogs barking a lot in the night affected our bedroom but not the others so much.
Surrounding Area:
Proximity to interesting towns, picturesque vistas - fields of sunflowers.
Tips or Restaurants:
We suggested to the owner that they install one full length mirror which she immediately did! Need plenty of insect repellent if eating outdoors. The bees and mosquitoes are plentiful.
Directions:
No GPS just used the directions given and no problem.

Merren, August

Overall:
Excellent. We rented the villa for the month of June. Friends and family joined us at different times. Everyone enjoyed the villa very much. Elizabeth was always helpful. it met all our expectations.
Enjoyed Most:
The villa was well designed with quality furnishings and was very comfortable. The bedrooms and bathrooms were large. Good kitchen. We enjoyed the large pool on hot days. You shared the pool with the owners but we enjoyed the interaction. Our grandchildren enjoyed playing with Henry and his friends. Particularly useful were the computer, the cell phone and the espresso machine. We really appreciated these features.
Enjoyed Least:
Most of the bicycles were not in usable condition. We were looking forward to cycling given the beautiful scenery so were disappointed that only one bicycle was fully functional. We acquired a lot of mosquito bites. The mattresses should be upgraded.
Surrounding Area:
The views from the patio were superb. We ate most of our meals there bugs permitting. The property is very well situated. Certaldo is only a few kms away and has restaurants, a supermarket, a great bakery, Forno Moderno, gelato shop, and everything else you need. There are restaurants in Certaldo Alto. The kids enjoyed the funicular ride. We went to the weekly markets in Poggibonsi and Certaldo for fruits and vegetables. There are also stalls selling cheese and meat. Half of these markets are devoted to selling clothes. Florence, Siena, Pisa are only a short car drive away from the villa. You can catch the train at Certaldo with its excellent connections to all these towns and beyond. We preferred the train to driving to Florence in particular.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano is an enjoyable 20 minute walk. It has the pizzeria and a small gelato-panneria but nothing else.
Directions:
The last part of the route was slightly complicated but we only made one wrong turn and that was when we were close to the property. Others had slight difficulty finding us but it is easy to ask someone in Sciano.
Check In Out:
The owner was always pleasant and offering to help.

Hugh, July

Overall:
It was wonderful!
Enjoyed Most:
Peaceful location, quiet, but close to many places we wanted to see.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing---it was absolutely perfect.
Surrounding Area:
The town of Certaldo was charming. We attended a Medieval dinner in the city center that was memorable and a lot of fun. We enjoyed the local pizza restaurant and at Patricia's recommendation, picked up food from a small grocery store in Certaldo---wonderful!
Tips or Restaurants:
The kitchen was well stocked, so we didn't need to bring salt, pepper, spices or matches.

Elaine, June

Overall:
Absolutely outstanding! We didn't want to leave! It was a pleasure to be at the villa from the moment we got there!
Enjoyed Most:
The outstanding location, the view, the decor, and of course, Elizabeth...she is a wonderful, amazing hostess!
Enjoyed Least:
The beds were a bit too firm for our North American liking, and there could have been more counter space in the bathrooms to place toiletries on and full length mirrors.
Surrounding Area:
The view, peace and quiet!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo...not really within walking distance but that didn't bother us at all.
Tips or Restaurants:
On Elizabeth's recommendation we ate at Pizzeria Marconi twice and thoroughly enjoyed it. As well, we also ate twice at La Saletta - absolutely amazing! The owner is a wonderful man who speaks pretty darn good English! He should be very proud of his restaurant and the food they serve...it was outstanding!
Directions:
The directions were good, but of course we got lost...our GPS couldn't find the place and we couldn't figure out how to enter the coordinates! Elizabeth was so sweet, she came into Certaldo and guided us to the villa...outstanding!!
Check In Out:
Elizabeth was great and showed us around when we first got there...the process was smooth!

Sheri, May

Overall:
Excellent and beyond our expectations.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, scenery, and amenities.
Enjoyed Least:
Hard to locate and would benefit from more specific directions and signage at intersection in Sciano.
Surrounding Area:
Everything
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano...limited facilities. 1.8 km walk Certaldo...not walking distance
Tips or Restaurants:
Be more specific about what is supplied in villa it would have been helpful to know that toilet paper, detergent, spices, oil and vinegar etc are supplied. Restaurants.. Maroni's pizzeria as advertised and great for efficient local. La Casalinga in Certaldo was very disappointing and would not recommend it. Osteria del Vicario in Certaldo Alto is romantic with innovative food, but more expensive and not to everyone's tastes, but we very much enjoyed it. Otherwise, I suspect better food is available in other towns that are a bit more sophisticated than Certaldo. Colle Val d'Elsa would be an example, with Alfonso's one of the finest restaurants in Tuscany.. we did not have the opportunity to go, but gourmands would likely want to know about it.

Ted, May

Overall:
It was wonderful, relaxing and comfortable at the villa. The views around every curve in the road are breath-taking. The driving on those narrow roads is scary and exhilarating at the same time. The food and the wine are really good and the people are friendly and tolerant of our limited Italian.
Enjoyed Most:
The bathrooms that are beautifully tiled and modern, the kitchen straight out of an IKEA catalogue, the lemon trees, rosemary, thyme all available to us and of course the wonderful views of the surrounding landscape.
Enjoyed Least:
The villa is equipped with a computer which only offered dial-up internet service however the day we left, Elizabeth had arranged for high-speed installation. We were just a week early.
Surrounding Area:
The proximity to surrounding towns which made it easy to do day trips and still come back to the villa in plenty of time to enjoy the pool, rest and get ready for the evening meal.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo and it's not within walking distance. We did some grocery shopping there and having read "Living like a Local", we knew we had to wear gloves to handle produce but you also need to weigh and stick the label on yourself at the site and not at the check-out.
Tips or Restaurants:
The villa was fully equipped so the only thing I can suggest is to make sure to have cash with you when grocery shopping at the COOP because they would not accept cards. As far as restaurants, Elizabeth has suggestions and menus in the villa's living room.
Directions:
We did use a Tom Tom and used the co-ordinates you provided.
Check In Out:
We were early and thought we'd ask about possibly leaving our bags and go sight-seeing until check-in time but Elizabeth made us welcome immediately. We then had to leave very early on our last day, so she came over the evening before and we settled up the cleaning fee and arranged to leave our keys in the mailbox.

Yvonne, May

Overall:
Absolutely dreamy!
Enjoyed Most:
This well-appointed villa has all the amenities anyone could wish for in a home away from home.
Enjoyed Least:
Having to leave...
Surrounding Area:
The view of the rolling hills from the dining room and the patio were breathtaking. Made morning runs all the more thrilling.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is about 4km from the villa, so not really withing walking distance, when you consider the hills and hairpin turns.
Tips or Restaurants:
Future renters need only bring themselves. The owner has thought of everything for both adults and children. We really appreciated the extensive library of guidebooks and cookbooks about the region. Wilma's, Pizzeria Maroni, La Saletta are great nearby restaurants.
Directions:
GPS coordinates were provided, although we did not have a GPS unit.

Iwan, April

Overall:
This was our second visit to this property, and it was again a wonderful experience.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything--comfort, beauty, "the little things" soap for the laundry room, computer, espresso machine.
Enjoyed Least:
The high cost of heating surcharge came as very much a shock.
Surrounding Area:
Day trips to San Gimignano, Siena, the coast. We loved taking a cooking class from Organic Tuscany.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo. No.
Tips or Restaurants:
Il Pirata ristorante in Certaldo. Nello La Taverna in Siena. Our favorite Ristorante LaMangiatoia in San Gimignano.

Overall:
Villa Certaldo exceeded our expectations in every way. The owner was extremely welcoming, the views were spectacular, the bedrooms and bathrooms were fabulous, the kitchen was just great. The location of the villa is great and it is short scenic drives to most of the surrounding towns and sights.
Enjoyed Most:
The villa is very welcoming to kids. The owner even have toys and entertainment for the kids it sure improves ones travelling experience when the kids feel welcome, too. The Villa is just so beautiful and the owner really had all our needs covered - Internet, and pay-as-you-go cell phone, laundry facilities, many travel books to assist us in our sightseeing... the list is really never ending.
Enjoyed Least:
There is really nothing that we did not like.
Surrounding Area:
We went to see so many little towns in the surrounding area and loved it all. We went to Siena, Montepulciano, San Gimignano, Volterra, Arezzo - to name a few. The villa is also just a short drive from grocery stores. The owner was nice enough to have the locations of the grocery stores and their favorite restaurants printed out for us.
Tips or Restaurants:
Keep in mind that if you stay in the winter, the cost of heating in Italy will eat up almost all the money you save by going out of season.
Directions:
We did use a GPS and used the coordinates and it took us right to the doorstep.

David, January

Overall:
Italy is one of our favorite places in the world. The Villa Certaldo adds to the flavor of the experience. We have styed there two years in a row and love it more each time.
Enjoyed Most:
The view is so beautiful that you never want to leave.
Enjoyed Least:
The large bedrooms, and the fact that it has washing facilities. And, of course, the owners.
Surrounding Area:
How beautiful it is.
Tips or Restaurants:
You do not have to bring anything. The villa is equipped with everything. The most wonderful expeerience was taking cooking lessons with Guiseppina. Her cooking school is only 5 minute from the villa. She is wonderful. We also had her cook for us. Yummmm.
Directions:
No GPS. The directions were great.

I honestly can't think of one negative thing to say.
Surrounding Area:
The beauty of Tuscany - views everywhere you looked. Lovely swimming pool, lemon trees all over the property. Lots of great paths for walking, too.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was the nearest, about a 10 minute drive. Not within walking distance, though.
Tips or Restaurants:
You don't need to bring anything! Everything was there - even a computer and mobile phone in our villa for our use. The washer and dryer was a godsend. There were umbrellas and plenty of towels, soaps for the washer and dishwasher, paper goods - everything was there.
Directions:
We used a GPS - highly recommend it! The coordinates were on our property voucher - a nice, helpful touch!
Check In Out:
Elizabeth is so agreeable - she even took two of us down to the train station the day we checked out. She goes out of her way to make everything perfect for her guests.

Overall:
Well exceeded our expectations!
Enjoyed Most:
The view from the loggia was spectacular! We enjoyed starting our day with breakfast on the porch watching the sun rise and the mist lifting from the low areas of the surrounding farms. We also had many great dinners on the porch too. What a lovely way to start and end a day and this will be a lasting memory. We also thoroughly enjoyed walking on the trails through the owners preserve. And we enjoyed the pool! There was much to like about Villa Certaldo!
Enjoyed Least:
Only that we had to leave!
Surrounding Area:
Very convenient location--a grocery store within easy driving distance, good local restaurants, and easy to get to other parts of Tuscany.
Tips or Restaurants:
Pizza Maroni and Wilma's both a short drive from the property were both very good and the owners very friendly.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth is always accessible and make the process very easy.

Jennifer, August

Overall:
The overall experience was wonderful. The property was very nice and well appointed. We were very pleased with all aspects of the property, the location and the responsiveness of the owner.
Enjoyed Most:
Where do I start? As I mentioned the home itself is very nicely designed and furnished. The washer and dryer, Internet access, and cable TV (we were able to watch the Olympics!) were all pleasant surprises. The owner also provided a loaner cell phone for our use. But we did not need it.
Enjoyed Least:
Cannot think of anything.
Surrounding Area:
We enjoyed the sounds and feel of the Tuscany countryside. Often we awoke to the sounds of early morning birds or a nearby farmer tending his orchard on his tractor. It was a nice way to wake up in the morning.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is about 10 minutes by car.
Tips or Restaurants:
We suggest trying the host's local shop and restaurant recommendations. Those we tried were all great experiences.

Enjoyed Most:
The view and the location.
Enjoyed Least:
No high speed Internet.
Surrounding Area:
The views.
Tips or Restaurants:
Get directions to everywhere in latitude and longitude and have a Tom Tom in your car.

Kevin, July

Overall:
Surpassed our expectations. The owner is a very warm and lovely hostess, willing to help her guests at a moment's notice. Although an American by birth, she has apparently immersed herself in the Italian lifestyle, providing us with an Italian experience without the language and cultural barriers. She offered numerous suggestions on places to go and things to do. She is truly a gem.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything! It offers breathtaking views of the rolling hillsides, the peace that comes with country living, modern conveniences while maintaining the essence of an Italian villa, it is centrally local to so many wonderful towns, and it offered enough space so that six of us could comfortably stay together. I could go on and on.
Enjoyed Least:
That we had to leave after only one week.
Surrounding Area:
The wonderfully scenic vineyards that surrounded the property, as well as all the small "monte" towns within an hour's drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
The owner provides nearly all the comforts of home. The one item we were happy we brought along were plastic storage bags of various sizes. We used them all. As for restaurant finds, be sure to ask about the owner'ss favorite pizza place. It's very nearby and the food is wonderful. We went there three out of four nights.
Check In Out:
Everything went very smoothly.

Netty, July

Overall:
We had a fantastic time! The villa was quite obviously designed to accomodate U. S. visitors who are used to screens, ceiling fans, dishwashers, laundry facilities and more! So we got to enjoy the best of both worlds.
Enjoyed Most:
The beautiful view of the Italian countryside from our porch and the screens on the windows.
Enjoyed Least:
Dogs barking at night from nearby residences and the early morning tractor on the neighboring farm. However, thanks to the ceiling fans, we were able to shut the bedroom windows to mitigate this noise and sleep in a little.
Surrounding Area:
The beautiful countryside and relatively easy access by car to Florence and Siena for big city touring.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest towns were Certaldo and Sciano.
Tips or Restaurants:
A rental car is necessary for this villa. No stores or restaurants are accessible by walking or bicycling. The American-born owner has completely outfitted and stocked this villa to meet the needs of U.S. visitors. We brought some of the items recommended by Rentvillas and didn't need any of them!

Susan, June

Overall:
Wonderful. The house contains everything you need and if there is something missing or not working, the owner is quick to respond and fix. It was also great to have someone who speaks English close by to help when needed.
Enjoyed Most:
The setting. Beautiful views all around. Also, the dwelling was very comfortable and equipped with everything you will need.
Enjoyed Least:
Can't think of anything
Surrounding Area:
All of the wonderful small villages which have been around for hundreds of years. Also the beautiful landscape with all of the wineries and olive orchards.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was approximately 4 km from the house.
Tips or Restaurants:
No need to bring anything but yourselves and the clothes you want to wear. The owner thinks of everything else. Complete kitchen, bath towels, laundry soap, umbrellas, etc. There was a restaurant very close to the house just down the road a bit, Pizzeria Maroni - Great Food and World Cup soccer!!
Directions:
Program coordinates given into your GPS before you go
Check In Out:
It was raining when we arrived and she met us with umbrellas.

Daniel, June

Overall:
Wonderful! The location and features, such as computer, BBQ, champagne glasses were provided with thoughtfulness and much care.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, gracious hostess, view, cleanliness and willingness to assist in any way. The view was the picture postcard image one has of Tuscany.
Enjoyed Least:
It was as near to perfection as I expect to find on earth. Really, I would have great difficulty coming up with any negative. Suggestion: Make sure the Guest Commentary Book is easily seen and not "hidden" on a shelf.
Surrounding Area:
The walking capability in the 'animal reserve' and the beauty.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We walked to the chapel and could have walked to the nearest very good pizza place. When we didn't stay in the villa, we drove!
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a GPS system for driving! Buy local food e.g., cheese, pasta, and wine for cooking in.
Check In Out:
Very easy. I had the euro deposit ready and received it minus cleaning charge at check-out.

Martin, May

Overall:
We loved our stay at this villa. It was perfect for 6 people in 3 bedrooms, each with their own en suite bathroom. The owner-manager, Elizabeth, was very helpful, informative, and gracious. She and her husband have renovated and added on to this old farmhouse to create a modern Tuscan villa, with North American conveniences. Great design, details, and eye for decorating. The location near the small town of Certaldo was also good close enough to services and highways to major cities, but villa was in a peaceful, rural setting.
Enjoyed Most:
The views of the Tuscan countryside and the sounds and peace of that countryside.
Enjoyed Least:
Poor bathroom lighting.
Surrounding Area:
Driving through the Tuscan countryside - beautiful hills, fields, towns, and views at every turn.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was 3-4 miles away. It has a nice small town atmosphere, has a nice old Alto town accessed by the funicular railway. Good services, shops, and train station for accessing other cities like Siena, Florence, etc.
Tips or Restaurants:
Take a basic Italian course before going. We took a 10 week, 15 hour Introductory course and it was very helpful for trying to make requests, ordering food, finding directions, reading signs, etc. There are a lot of English speakers but also many people who had no English. They all appreciated our efforts at butchering their language. We also took an Italian dictionary which helped decipher words as we drove or encountered them. The "Wilma" restaurant on the road to Barberino Val d'Elsa was very good and reasonably priced. When eating in towns, try to find the restaurants and coffee bars where the locals go, away from the tourist areas. The price will be 25-75% of what the tourist joints will charge.

Mike, May

Overall:
Outstanding.
Enjoyed Most:
The owner of the property who was very gracious and helpful, the property itself which was beautifully and comfortably decorated, and the surrounding countryside.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing.
Surrounding Area:
The views from the house are the reason people come to Tuscany!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was not within walking distance. We spent one afternoon with our children exploring the old town -- a great short trip.
Tips or Restaurants:
The Coop in Certaldo was great for groceries. The PAM out of town was much larger, though.

Katherine, March

Overall:
We had an excellent stay. The owner, is gracious, helpful and a wonderful hostess.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything about the Villa is perfectly appointed. It's beautiful, cozy, and comfortable with lovely views. Every detail has been provided to make the stay carefree and pleasant. We especially appreciated the Internet Access and cell phone provided.

Jacqueline, March

Overall:
The owner played a huge role in our enjoyment of the villa. She was so nice and caring. She went above and beyond in her availability for our questions and needs. This was critical for us because having children could have made our trip much harder. She really helped make everything just wonderful, despite our lost luggage! Even, called a pediatrician when our kids got sick....she was/is a blessing to our trip and we are very, very grateful to her and her husband and their wonderful home. We absolutely LOVED being there.
Enjoyed Most:
How do I narrow it down? Everything was impeccable!! However, I guess it was the views and surroundings. Just amazing, every morning. To the basics...all the extras, like toys, highchair, small table, were perfect for our children and so important. The kitchen was great, access to computer, comfortable living room, gorgeous bathrooms, amazing bedrooms and so much space, and very, very clean. Cannot say enough about the property. Another huge appreciation...very good washing machine and DRYER. This was pertinent with children and especially since Air France lost 2 of our bags for 5 days.
Enjoyed Least:
The beds were a bit too hard for my preference.
Surrounding Area:
The town of Certaldo was big enough to explore and small enough so that it was easy with our children. The 'funiculare' was fun for us and the children and we were able to explore Certaldo Alto, another beautiful tiny walking village. Very important that Certaldo has a grocery store, pharmacies, bars, restaurants, clothing shops, etc....all the necessities and then some. We found playgrounds too...oh, yes, train station and information center was great.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The main town is Certaldo, about 5 minutes driving from the property. Super easy.

Everything is provided....really, even umbrellas and washcloths! No need to bring a computer, just your needs, and you can pack light due to wonderful washing machine and dryer. It made our trip so very easy and convenient which was totally key because we travelled with a baby and child.
Directions:
Signs are small, need to really pay attention, but once someone get the hang of signage, it's really easy

Maria, November

Enjoyed Most:
My wife and I really enjoyed the view. Overlooking the Tuscan Hills, San Gimignano with all the surrounding vineyards.
Enjoyed Least:
The beds were not up to the quality that we are used to, but we figured that is the way it is in Europe. We also did not like the heating cost. It was in the 40's and we needed the heat on while in the villa.
Surrounding Area:
The surrounding area was basically vineyards and wooded areas. The pastures and woods contained many wildlife, especially pheasants. Walking down the country road was a great experience.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was the nearest town and it was not within walking distance, unless it was a very nice, warm day and you wanted to walk for exercise. It was about 4 to 5 miles away. Walking all the way to town, as well as biking would be a dangerous venture due to the curvy roads and crazy drivers.
Tips or Restaurants:
Nearby within walking distance on a nice day is Pizzeria Maroni, very nice people and good food, pasta and pizza. Big rooms with TVs in each room to catch up on the news or Soccer. Also about 4 miles away is Wilma's, a small family run restaurant with homemade food, delicious.
Check In Out:
The property owner was very accommodating; we needed to leave at 3:00am on Saturday and we checked out early Friday evening.

Lanny, October

Overall:
This is an excellent villa for three couples traveling together. The bedrooms are large and comfortable, there are sufficient private spaces for privacy when needed, and there is even a computer with Internet access to assure that resource is available without needing to add the PC to your luggage. The owner has anticipated every need and is ready to help in any way. Her architect husband has done a fantastic job in the planning of the renovation, and the villa shines as an example of thoughtful and tasteful renewal of an home with a history.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything was first class plus. The care with which this villa was designed and is equipped caters to demanding Americans abroad. From the excellently equipped and furnished kitchen to the luxurious baths the house is well designed. The dining room window was fantastic---what a view and perfectly positioned for the diners to all enjoy. The loggia was a fantastic spot for reading. It is impossible to just one thing as the item we enjoyed most.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing--- it was beautiful, clean, well equipped and had gorgeous views. Pictures do not capture how fine this rental property is. Even though there is another rental on the property and the villa is attached to the owner's home, we never felt any lack of privacy.
Surrounding Area:
Views, views and views! The property was located in the midst of vineyards and rolling hills, with vistas from every window. The location was super for day trips, whether by train or by car. Certaldo has an upper village--a walled town where Boccacio was born, and lived. This was a plus because we were there during the annual festival with a parade through town celebrating his works. Really fun.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is not within walking distance, but is a few minutes drive with train connections to Florence and Pisa to ease the big city experiences should one choose day trips to these places. The villa's location could not have been better for easy day trips and the beauty of the country side makes the location perfect.
Tips or Restaurants:
We cooked in each night--- had leisurely lunches in the towns we visited and then enjoyed experimenting with the many cookbooks in the villa and local foods purchased at the day markets in the towns we visited or at the convenient and well stocked PAM store in Poggibonsi.
Check In Out:
The owner was extremely helpful and flexible on scheduling both check-in and check-out. She was so super---she made the whole process very easy and we never felt like tenants but rather like guests.

Barbara, September

Enjoyed Most:
The view, the comfort level, great bedrooms and bathrooms.
Enjoyed Least:
Having the villa right next door.
Surrounding Area:
The country road and small communities including Certaldo.
Tips or Restaurants:
The owner now has a computer in the apartment. She also provides a list of restaurants. Believe me, these restaurants were very nice. There's no need to bring a whole lot; the villa ha almost everything.

Kim, July

Overall:
We have traveled to many places on this earth. This villa was the most lovely and peaceful place we have ever stayed. The owner-hostess was as gracious and helpful as anyone could possibly be. We will return !!!
Enjoyed Most:
The view, the structure, but mostly the owner.
Enjoyed Least:
The bathroom on the first floor bedroom was a bit small, but compared to most of Europe it still was luxurious
Surrounding Area:
Tuscany is lovely and the people were very warm and friendly. The food and the wine weren't bad either.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was the closest town, but it was not in walking distance. Other than our catholic church which was next door, you definitely need to rent a car to enjoy this area.
Tips or Restaurants:
Every restaurant we went to in the area was wonderful.
Directions:
The roads in Italy are a bit tough. Our Garmin Navigator GPS for some reason didn't have the Villa's address but it got us close. I highly recommend taking a portable GPS with European maps in it .
Check In Out:
The owner was delightful and accommodating.

Arleen Gaydos, July

Overall:
It was a slice of heaven. We've already rented it for two weeks next year!
Enjoyed Most:
The location, the villa itself, and the owners
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing i can think of.
Surrounding Area:
Centrally located, the rolling hillsides and vineyards.
Tips or Restaurants:
The pizzeria in Sciano and the restaurant in Certaldo where they specialize in roasted meats.

Carol, June

Overall:
The property is perfect for three couples. It is centrally located, the decor is very pleasing, the room sizes are generous, and the American owner is very helpful. She wants all who stay in the villa to enjoy their vacation.
Enjoyed Most:
The property is perfect for three couples with three bedrooms and accompanying baths, plus there is a powder room downstairs. The view of the valley is spectacular. You can even see San Gimignano in the distance. The swimming pool was a plus and best of all is the owner. She was so helpful and caring. She made the villa perfect. There are also hair dryers. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern appliances. Everything you need is there.
Enjoyed Least:
I really have no negatives. The only thing I can possible think of is that the coffee pot took an hour to make coffee.
Surrounding Area:
The villa is perfectly situated to explore the Tuscan hill towns. We went to San Gimignano, Siena, Volterra, Florence, as well as some of the Chianti vineyards and towns. It was possible to visit all of these as day trips, getting back to the villa in time to have a swim and relax during the afternoon.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano is a very small village only a kilometer or two down the road with a great pizzeria. There is a full service PAM grocery store to the south about 5 miles in Poggibonsi. The store has a full compliment of produce, meats, and fresh fish. Be advised that the milk is not in a cooler, but located to the left of the fish on a shelf. We had trouble finding it. The town of Certaldo is to the north about the same distance with a train station and other stores and restaurants.
Tips or Restaurants:
The village pizzeria has delicious pizza plus other pasta. There is also a lovely trattoria in the old village of Certaldo. To reach the old town, you take a funicular to the top of the city. Some of our best meals were cooked by a local woman who the owner contacted. She makes the most delicious veal Parmesan you've ever tasted. She also sold us fresh eggs, prosciutto, fresh salami, and wine. She cooked for us three nights and her price is very reasonable.
Check In Out:
If arriving late on Saturday night, know that it is very difficult to find somewhere to eat since most Italians go out on Saturday evening and most restaurants, even the pizzeria, require a reservation. The owner was wonderful to arrange for Pasquelina to come to our villa and prepare dinner for us that evening. One very good thing is that the PAM store is open on Sunday so we could get groceries the next morning.

Constance, May

Overall:
I would go back there with no hesitation.
Enjoyed Most:
Very well organized. Very well maintained. Perfect location. Perfect scenery.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing!
Surrounding Area:
The view in breathtaking!
Tips or Restaurants:
For futures renters - just close your eyes and when you open them - you are in a dream... There was a nice simple local restaurant called Vilam's 7 km from the villa with good food and a nice list of wines.
Directions:
I used a GPS and it took us to the door of the villa - really amazing!
Check In Out:
The owner is one of a kind. Beside taking very good care of the house and perfectly maintaining the villa with grace, she always seemed to walk to extra mile for us. One day we had some problems with the rented car - never take a FIAT - and she took us to the nearest town, Poggibonsi, and talked to the mechanics and the car rental people in Italian and waited with us until everything was done. This is definitely not part of her duties.

Gabriel, May

Overall:
This is a superb property hosted by gracious owners who take hospitality very seriously. We are already planning to return in 2009.
Enjoyed Most:
The comfort and beauty of Villa Certaldo was superb--truly extraordinary! The hospitality offered by the owners was gracious, respectful, and made us feel like cherished family members. They helped us know the area, and responded promptly to our every request.
Enjoyed Least:
There was nothing that we did not like.
Surrounding Area:
The beautiful views of Tuscany from our balcony were picture perfect. We loved being just 10 minutes from the train station to take day trips to Florence and Pisa and Siena.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The town of Certaldo is a lovely small town with a beautiful historic hilltop village. The town is not really walking distance, but we rode bicycles provided on the property into town.
Tips or Restaurants:
Everything you need is provided--from internet connection to cell phone to laundry and diswasher soap. We enjoyed eating several times at the nearby local ristorante, Wilma's, where there were no other English speakers, but a warm welcome and wonderful food.
Directions:
Recommend that people fly in and out of Pisa, where one can transfer directly to the train which goes to Certaldo. Then rent a car in Certaldo.

Paul, March

Enjoyed Most:
The property has wonderful owners who will go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable. The accommodations are modern, yet the home has a true Tuscan style. One owner is an architect. The views from each window are very nice.
Enjoyed Least:
The baths weren't designed very well for shower-takers.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The area is very near Certaldo which is a regular size town much more than village, but less than Siena. The only thing within walking distance is the horse field. A car is a must have.
Tips or Restaurants:
The owner had blow driers available but they aren't powerful. Also had a cell phone which was very nice because you only paid for the time you used. The phone also provided Internet access.
Directions:
The road labeled Florence to Siena to take off of A1 is not very clearly marked but one should take the first exit off of A1 from the Florence airport that says Siena.

Matthew, October

Enjoyed Most:
Quality of the interior. The owner is a gem; very helpful and obliging.
Enjoyed Least:
No real negatives.
Surrounding Area:
Views from the property are exceptional.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was a nice town, 8 km away
Tips or Restaurants:
A great restaurant in the square by the funicular -- only seats 16-20 and opens at 800 PM -- but fabulous food and wine.

Overall:
This property is a gem! We are recommending it to everyone. We had a fabulous time. It was a beautiful villa, tastefully decorated with wonderful amenities (American coffee maker, dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer, screens on all windows, swimming pool, bicycles). The location was perfect - with the town of Certaldo just a 5 minute drive away.
Enjoyed Most:
The keyholders/owners were wonderful. Elizabeth speaks English, and she is so very friendly and helpful. She would make suggestions to us regarding where to visit, where to eat, and would even call ahead for us and make dinner reservations. And our Travel Advisor who worked with us, was terrific. We were very impressed with Rentvillas.com's service and follow-up. Thank you for helping us enjoy one of our best vacations yet!!!
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing
Surrounding Area:
We loved having a medieval section to the town, Certaldo Alto, to visit during the day (there was a medieval festival there during our stay) and during the night (several very nice restaurants). Certaldo was situated perfectly between Siena and Florence with so many other hill towns to visit in between.

Sandra, September

Overall:
The very best thing about this villa is that the owners are on site and extremely helpful in all regards. Not only do they have excellent taste and a beautiful place that they are willing to share, but they are truly hospitable and go out of their way to make sure that all your needs are met, including making arrangements for an emergency dental repair I needed...driving with us to the dentist, making the introductions, and explaining to the dentist what the situation was. We can't wait to go back to this villa and recommend it highly.
Enjoyed Most:
Hard to pick one thing...everything was exceptional in regards to the villa itself, beautiful marble bathrooms, well equipped kitchen, comfortable living and dining room lovely outdoor porch area, wonderful bedrooms, very private. Gorgeous grounds and swimming pool.
Enjoyed Least:
The only thing that took a little getting used to is the fact that you are truly in the country, so in the morning the dogs in the valley set to greeting each other for a while. This is no fault of the owners, their dog is well trained and not a nuisance at all. Just the country sounds of animals, tractors and roosters. Far preferable to traffic, ambulances and vespas that you would get in any town or city!
Surrounding Area:
Everything...easy drive to the closest town, Certaldo. Train ride in to Florence avoids the parking and traffic issues. Close to the Chianti region and many wonderful Tuscany towns to explore.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was the nearest town. It has a fascinating old part of the town up on the hill and it also has a newer section with some good shopping as well as all the essentials such as a good butcher, grocery store, pharmacy, bakeries, wine store. Would be a longish walk ....the owners have bikes you can use, so cycling would be an option...it is about a 5-10 minute drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
The Pizza-pasta place on the way to Certaldo was very good as was another restaurant that was not too far away. The owners will tell you the name and location.
Check In Out:
It was handled very professionally and smoothly. Everything we needed to know was explained. Instructions for the appliances were provided and readily available.

Enjoyed Most:
Beautiful villa, newly renovated. Wonderful views. Very friendly American owner, Elizabeth, who provided both indoor and outdoor toys for our two small children ages 3 and 4. In addition, our children loved playing with her young son.
Enjoyed Least:
On several days there was mild noise from renovation being performed on the villa next door. However, this was only a very minor issue and the owner states that this will be finished in July of 2006.
Surrounding Area:
Centrally located with easy access to Florence, Siena, Volterra, Castellina, etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo, which has a nice old city on a hilltop. Not in walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
The local pizzeria in Sciano had wonderful pasta.
