Customer Reviews

Overall:
It was wonderful, better than the photographs. Owners very kind, helpful, and friendly.
Enjoyed Most:
The beauty, peace, and the experience of being in a very special place--one with history and renovated with love.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing.
Surrounding Area:
We enjoyed going to Bayeux, Briquebec, Saint Vaast-la-Houge.
Nearby Events or Locales:
None of the small towns were walking distance, but several were a short drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
Kitchen and house are very well-equipped--no need to bring special supplies. Very good gourmet shop in Briquebec--Annick can recommend. Thought La Bisquinne in Saint Vaast was wonderful for oyster and fish fans.
Directions:
Directions were fine--we did use GPS.
Check In Out:
It is helpful to have some French language skills--at least a bit.

Louise, July

Overall:
We had a wonderful time. The property is amazing and the owners were very friendly.
Enjoyed Most:
We had a donkey and two goats in our backyard. The Chateau was amazing and the owners gave us a private tour.
Enjoyed Least:
No internet. But the chateau did have WiFi.
Surrounding Area:
We enjoyed visiting the D-Day sights, many charming small towns and Mont St. Michel.
Nearby Events or Locales:
No towns were within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring books and board games. No internet or TV.
Directions:
We had no issues.

Very smooth. They let us check in 2 hours early.

Richard, August

Overall:
Excellent! When you think of a dream French country property, this is it!
Enjoyed Most:
Absolutely beautiful property. Full access to the chateau, farm animals roaming the grounds, comfortable accommodations. Everything in the Mill House was authentic French -- no cheap Ikea furnishings.
Surrounding Area:
Close proximity to a variety of activities such as D-Day landing beaches, Cherbourg, abbeys, markets, etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Valognes. Not really within walking distance but just a 2-3 min drive away.
Tips or Restaurants:
The chateau did have WiFi which could be used for free by sitting in the kitchen or on the bench outside. If US visitors want WiFi within the Mill House, I recommend purchasing a portable WiFi "pay as you go" hotbox from a local Orange cellular boutique. This will allow for WiFi within the Mill House and in the car while traveling, etc.
Directions:
The arrival instructions said to follow the yellow Chateau de Pont Rilly signs. The signs are white -- not yellow!

Marcy, August

Overall:
EXCEEDED ALL EXPECTATIONS! The villa itself was clean, beautifully decorated, had all the necessary provisions, and was larger than expected. Hosts were FABULOUS! Welcoming, engaging, generous with their time. Helped direct us to wonderful restaurants, gave us a wonderful tour of their home, and even a published book of photos of the property with a history -- a really nice keepsake. I have two children and the hosts were so good with them!! We did NOT want to leave. In fact, I would beg the owners to sell us the Mill House if I could!!!
Enjoyed Most:
Décor! And the serenity of the property.
Surrounding Area:
Variety of places to go and see small towns, beaches, history, good food.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Valognes. Not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Annick has a list of good restaurant recommendations at the property. Take her advice! We had great dinners at the Chateaux in Bricquebec and Auberge des Grottes in Nez de Jobourg is DEFINITELY worth the 30-minute drive!!! Stunning views! Go at dusk.
Directions:
It was easy to find!
Check In Out:
Smooth as silk and the hosts were very accommodating to our late arrival!

Lesli, July

Overall:
We were delighted with every aspect. Exceeded our expectations.
Enjoyed Most:
Annick and Jean Jacques are gracious hosts. Annick had put a bowl of fresh-cut peonies from her garden on the kitchen table to greet us, along with a box of local cookies, a bowl of fresh fruit, and some locally produced cider. The house is beautifully furnished, with amazing trompe l'oeuil artwork and museum-quality antiques. The chateau's setting is beautiful and we were entertained by the resident sheep, goats and peacocks.
Surrounding Area:
The grounds of the chateau are lovely and we were encouraged to explore them. There are lots of day trip possibilities: Mont St. Michel, Bayeaux, Rouen, Honfleur and the coast.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Well, Negreville is within walking distance but there's nothing really there. The nearest town for groceries is Volognes, which was interesting to explore as well.
Tips or Restaurants:
The restaurant suggestions provided by Annick and Jean Jacques are good. Future renters may want to bring good books, cards, Scrabble or other games for evenings--there's no TV.
Directions:
We did have a GPS but could not figure out how to enter the coordinates (one of them was a negative number and we couldn't get the system to accept it).
Check In Out:
Annick declined our offer of the cash security deposit. Check in and out was very smooth and friendly.

Karen, May

Overall:
It was superb. The owners were very gracious in sharing the other areas on the property, offering tours and letting us know that we were welcome to roam the grounds. The accommodations were very comfortable. Having a working fireplace was such a nice touch!
Enjoyed Most:
The lovely grounds, the animals, and the peace and quiet. Also, the beautiful antiques in the house.
Surrounding Area:
Its rural nature, the lovely old stone houses, and its proximity to other areas in Normandy for sightseeing.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Negreville is quite small and not really walkable.
Tips or Restaurants:
The only thing remotely lacking was sharp kitchen knives.
Directions:
I was not the one driving, so I can't really comment. We had a GPS, but had not figured out how to use it yet when we first arrived.
Check In Out:
No, our hostess was very accommodating and everything was very easy.

Susan, May

Overall:
Fantastic experience.
Enjoyed Most:
The chateau and grounds were incredible. Also very friendly hosts.
Enjoyed Least:
The beds were not very comfortable. Easily the biggest problem.
Surrounding Area:
Loved the cute towns, Mont St. Michel, and WWII sites.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Valognes. No.
Tips or Restaurants:
I'd bring your own pillow.
Directions:
Used GPS.
Check In Out:
No, host stayed up late to let us in. Everything was great.

Matthew, July

Overall:
Much more than we expected! The spaciousness of the Mill House, and it's setting on 200+ acres was beautiful. Chateau De Pont-Rilly is stunning. We were given a tour by the owners, BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE. In restoring the Chateau, Mill House, and other buildings on the property they are following their hearts, and have been blessed with a wonderful life.
Enjoyed Most:
The peace and quite on the estate. Convenient to town for shopping, close to NORMANDIE battle sites (towns/beaches/museums). Very comfortable for family dinners (lots of wine) at the end of the day.
Surrounding Area:
See above. Plus GREAT WINES, so many to chose from, and at very reasonable prices.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bricquebec, Negrevile, Valognes. Yes you could walk to Negrevile, but really all of the towns were a short drive by car. The towns are quaint, lovely settings. Easy to spend a day sitting outside a cafe watching time float by with absolutely no desire to do anything other than ENJOY LIFE!
Tips or Restaurants:
We were fortunate to have exceptional weather, warm for late September/October and no rain. LE PETIT MALOUIN, in SAINT MALO was fabulous; it was a warm night and we ate outside. Also L'HOSTELLERIE DU CHATEAU IN BRICQUEBEC.
Check In Out:
We meant the owners at check in. BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE LIVING THEIR DREAM.

Bill , October

Overall:
We enjoyed it a lot, as it was very peaceful.
Enjoyed Most:
It was a nice quiet place.
Enjoyed Least:
Funky smell in kitchen.
Surrounding Area:
Visiting WW 2 beaches,memorials, etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Valognes, not within walking distance but not far.
Check In Out:
No problem with checking in and out.

James, August

Overall:
This was a truly lovely place to spend a week---as another traveler has pointed out, it is actually even nicer than the pictures suggest. The house is quite roomy, and it is beautifully and meticulously decorated. The owners, who live in the chateau, are gracious and accommodating. When we had trouble finding the property, Annick came out and met us in the town and led us in. She asked us to breakfast at the chateau, and we enjoyed her homemade jams and yogurt. We also loved the farm animals. All in all, this is a picture-perfect Norman farmhouse experience!
Enjoyed Most:
We loved the beautiful decorating, and the adorable animals roaming the grounds. We also enjoyed meeting the owners who, despite our mutually limited ability to communicate, were unfailingly gracious. We especially enjoyed getting a tour of the chateau, which has been expertly and artistically restored by the owners---he is a gifted craftsman---and expert picture and furniture restorer, and she is a talented seamstress and decorator.
Enjoyed Least:
There was nothing about the property that we didn't like. The surrounding towns are not especially charming, but the house is nonetheless well situated for day trips to the Normandy beaches, Mt. St. Michel, Bayeaux, etc.
Surrounding Area:
Day trips to Bayeaux, Mont St. Michel, and the D-Day beaches and museums.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Valognes was about a 10-minute car ride away.
Tips or Restaurants:
We mostly ate in, though Le Cap, on the beach at Cateret, was a restaurant highlight. The kitchen could use sharp knives (a universal problem at any rental property!) The house is so pleasant to hang out in that board games, music, watercolors, etc. would come in handy.
Directions:
We did not use a GPS. THe country road that was indicated by the directions that we were sent and by Google Maps was actually very muddy and nearly impassable. Better to exit N13 just past Valognes onto D902 and follow it to D146 and then D62. There are signs at the crucial turns.

Lee, August

Overall:
We were delighted. A lovely experience.
Enjoyed Most:
It was sort of a fairyland-a "peaceable kingdom"
Surrounding Area:
The historic beaches, museums, etc. The Normandy countryside is exquisite. Lots of horse farms, cabbage, and onions (seasonal).
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town is Valognes, a good-sized town but not particularly attractive. It's a couple of miles from the property.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring music. Some great restaurants: La Marine in Carteret-formal, extremely expensive-worth it. La Cap in Carteret. Seaside, informal. Excellent food. Moderate. Le Chasse Maree in Saint-Vaast-La-Hogue. Charming, great seafood. Moderate
Directions:
It was somewhat difficult to find.

Martin, October

Overall:
Better than expected. Pictures do not adequately reflect how nice the property really is.
Enjoyed Most:
Clean, beautiful, spacious and well-equipped.
Surrounding Area:
The house has a park-like atmosphere.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Valogne is a short drive away.
Check In Out:
Annick met us soon after we drove into the property.

Jeff, July

Overall:
We have rented many houses over about 10 years as our daughter lives in England with her husband and 2 little boys and renting a house is a good way to travel with kids. This house ranks right up at the top - maybe tied with a villa near Sorrento. The owners were very gracious and friendly. They do not speak much English, so a little French is helpful, but a phrase book would do.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything! It was quiet, had ducks, chickens, peacocks, a donkey, a black swan, sheep, cats. The Mill House was very comfortable. The owners kept us stocked with wood for fires. The grounds were large and we could walk all over and visit their chapel and greenhouse - the owner brought us cushions so we could sit and read in the greenhouse and even offered us a cigar!
Enjoyed Least:
Absolutely nothing.
Surrounding Area:
It was within about 30 minutes drive of the D-Day beaches and about a 20 minute drive on 3 sides to other wonderful beaches, which the little boys loved.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Valogne was the nearest town with groceries, etc. It was about a 10 minute drive away.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a hair dryer.

Kathleen, March

Overall:
Our stay was pure delight. All six of us thoroughly enjoyed The Old Mill House. The owners are absolutely charming, wonderfully warm and truly accommodating. They allowed us to visit their chateau and offered the option of a delicious breakfast in the chateau which we took advantage of most mornings.
Enjoyed Most:
The scenic beauty of the area is amazing! When we first entered the property, the image of the chateau at the end of the long drive was truly breathtaking. The Old Mill House itself is charming and very comfortable, complete with a running mill stream and fireplaces. The accommodations are furnished with antiques that are tasteful and fully functional. The kitchen was well equipped, including a dishwasher. There are peacocks, geese, ducks, goats, donkeys, sheep, cats and a beautiful black swan on the vast grounds. All are friendly and enjoy being fed. We were welcome to walk the grounds and visit the stables, greenhouse and chapel of the chateau.
Enjoyed Least:
The only negative at all is that the outside clothes line left a mark on the clothes so we used the hanging rods in the laundry room for drying the few things we washed.
Surrounding Area:
The location is perfect for day trips. Within 20 minutes we were on the water in Cherbourg-Octeville or Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. An equally short drive in the other direction took us to Bricquebec which has an open-air market on Mondays. It takes only an hour to drive to Bayeux to view the renown tapestry and gorgeous cathedral. The Normandy beaches of D-Day fame and the American Cemetery are also nearby. Mont Saint-Michel is well worth the two-hour drive. Perhaps most enjoyable were walks on the chateau grounds!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Technically the nearest town is Negreville, but nearby Valognes has more to offer. It is only a few minutes drive away but not really within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
For wonderful meals and friendly service, visit L'Agriculture Restaurant in Valognes, L'Hostellerie du Chateau in Bricquebec, Le Chasse Marie in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, Le Vauban in Cherbourg and La Regence in Cherbourg. Have one of the souffle-like omelettes at Mount Saint-Michel. There are delightful shops for pastries, chocolates, breads, cheeses and meats in all of these towns.
Directions:
The sign marking the entrance to the chateau is very small and easy to miss, especially in the dark.
Check In Out:
The process was very smooth. The owners are so gracious and accommodating. We parted with hugs.
