Customer Reviews

Overall:
Location was terrific. We loved being able to walk to a market, wine shop, several restaurants, coffee cafes, and historical points. Hostess was exceptionally responsive and the check-in and out was a breeze. Nice place to access other villages and towns.
Enjoyed Most:
Location.
Enjoyed Least:
Traffic noise.
Surrounding Area:
Ease of travel to other other villages by foot or car. Lots to see close by.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The lodging was right in Barberino and we could walk to Tavernelle.
Tips or Restaurants:
We would try to rent away from the main road but still in the village. Loved fixing dinners in.
Directions:
We did use a phone map. Phone call to hostess was helpful.
Check In Out:
Simpler than we thought it would be.

Maryann, October

Overall:
Great.
Enjoyed Most:
Location and pool.
Enjoyed Least:
The pool was crowded, as it's shared with other units.
Surrounding Area:
Being able to stroll into town.
Nearby Events or Locales:
3 minute walk.
Directions:
GPS is the easiest way to find a property, and I used Google maps.
Check In Out:
The owner is lovely and very helpful.

Tom, August

Overall:
Excellent.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, view, interior decor, bathrooms, etc. are great.
Enjoyed Least:
It was very hot.
Surrounding Area:
Restaurant at about five minutes walking distance.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Barberino Val d'Elsa. Yes.
Tips or Restaurants:
Grocery store in the village (Tavernelle) next door.
Directions:
Property is on the left in Barberino Val d'Elsa, right after the gas station, when traveling from the direction of Siena.
Check In Out:
Make sure Sonia Formichi (property manager) knows that you will arrive at certain time. That way she can be available at the time of your arrival.

Burak, July

Overall:
It was not our first visit to the area, but it was our first stay at San Barberino 2. It was beyond what we had hoped for. Excellent place to stay, and just added to our Tuscany experience. Thank you.
Enjoyed Most:
The view, the privacy. And definately, the kitchen! Also, great bathrooms.
Enjoyed Least:
Well, it took us a bit of time to get used to using a key to get OUT of the gate. Only other thing lacking was an electric dryer. But I've used one of those racks before.
Surrounding Area:
Well, as I said, we'd been to stay in Barberino before. We love the country aspect. It's location can't be beat, half way between Florence and Siena, and near to many of the places we wanted to reach. But it is a quiet and uncrowded village, and very charming. The people are friendly and helpful.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We didn't really have time to walk to any other villages, but we did go into Tavarnelle one or two times.
Tips or Restaurants:
The apartment was very well equipped and I can't think of anything needed. Maybe pool towels, if it's warm enopugh for swimming. Our favorite restaurants were the two alongside the church. The one on the north side of church was our absolute favorite. They hugged us on our last night!
Directions:
I was familiar with the village from staying there for two weeks in 2005, so I had a pretty good idea of where it was. We had no trouble finding it, just getting in the gate.
Check In Out:
No, it went smoothly. We did phone when we were about an hour away, and this did help to alert Sonia that we were near.

Mary Jo, October

Overall:
We loved the area and close proximity to other towns and cities. Very relaxing and beautiful! We hired a chef to cook for us one night and that was fantastic--we had lots of leftovers for the next 2 days.
Enjoyed Most:
Location and view. Cecile was very gracious and helpful with directions, and she also arranged our chef at villa night.
Enjoyed Least:
Agree with earlier comments about road noise and mosquitos. A dryer would have been nice since we had do quite a bit of laundry. Also, we found the beds to be too firm. Want to note that people should be aware of the stairs in th villa leading up to the bedroom. Thankfully San Barberino 2 has a downstairs bedroom and bath which was great for my Mom. The only other problem encountered in the area was very limited WiFi service; there was one free Internet cafe/bar but it was only open in the evenings.
Surrounding Area:
The beautiful rolling Tuscan hills, and Val d' Elsa was charming!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Val d' Elsa was a pleasant walk, uphill but not too strenuous for us, ages 50-75. Had a cafe, grocery store, library, and 2 great restaurants.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring pool towels if you have room because they are not provided. Our favorite restaurant was recommended by Cecile, Osteria Piazza, on the way to Castellina in Chianti. Beautiful patio, excellent food and service!
Directions:
Did not have GPS but found it OK without.
Check In Out:
Cecile was efficient and really great all around.

Mary, October

Overall:
Fantastic!
Enjoyed Most:
It exceeded our expectations. It was well furnished and very clean when we arrived. Cecile, the property manager on site, was helpful with any questions we had. GREAT DEAL for a very nice property and we are fussy.
Enjoyed Least:
The property, like most properties in the area, is on a main road. This is not a big deal but if we had to say what we liked the least this would be it. Don't get us wrong, we would stay there again in a heartbeat!
Surrounding Area:
Great location, easy, beautiful drives to Siena and Firenze. We enjoyed the small town of San Barberino 50 yards from the Villa. Also nice drives to Bologna and Volterra - great town, worth the one hour drive.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Barberino, had a couple of restaurants, internet cafe, market, church, post office within 5 minutes walk.
Tips or Restaurants:
You don't need to take a thing. It is all there, ready for occupancy. For us, it was an amazing week. We cried when we had to leave. We had no idea what we were getting into. We took a chance and it paid off quite well. This is a much better deal than the hotels we stayed at in Rome and Palermo. It was nice to be able to make simple breakfasts and lunches. We had dinner out most evenings. The local restaurants are reasonably priced. We used Trip Advisor for restaurants advice and didn't have a bad meal the entire time.
Directions:
Used my Iphone but it wasn't necessary as the directions were straight forward.
Check In Out:
Cecile made it easy, about 5 minutes on both ends. She was onsite so no big deal with the few questions we had. She was cheerful and anxious to please. We met the owner at one point but between his English and my Italian it was a brief conversation. Very nice man also anxious to please us.

David , April

Overall:
Great place, good location, very luxurious.
Enjoyed Most:
The quality of the property and the view.
Enjoyed Least:
The downstairs toilet wouldn't flush easily.
Surrounding Area:
The view was very pretty and was centrally located to all the good towns to visit.
Tips or Restaurants:
Do the wine tasting at Greve in Chianti and spend some time in San Gimignano. If you like TV, bring an iPad with prerecorded TV shows. Italian TV isn't so good.
Directions:
We used a GPS in combination with the instructions and had no problem.
Check In Out:
Our host, Cecile, was very accommodating and looked after us very well. She is a very nice lady and made us feel very welcome.

Michael, October

Overall:
Good! Villa, food, people, views.
Enjoyed Most:
Clean and well furnished.
Enjoyed Least:
Bathrooms.
Surrounding Area:
Views, food, people.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Both San Barberino and Tavernella are within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Visit as many small towns as possible. They are great.
Directions:
Cecile, the manager, was a great help.

Richard, October

Enjoyed Most:
The beautiful view of the countryside and the easy walk into town. We also loved the property manager, who was always so helpful and pleasant!
Enjoyed Least:
The only downside to this property is that it is right on the road, which is pretty busy. You can hear cars going by when you're in the kitchen, or have one of the two rooms on that side of the apartment. That said, it is such a gorgeous property that I imagine it would cost a lot more if it didn't have this one drawback.
Surrounding Area:
This is the perfect location for exploring Tuscany. It really couldn't have been better, being equal distance to both Florence and Siena 1/2 hour and a short drive to many hill towns and castles. The property manager told us all the best ones to visit since there are so many!
Nearby Events or Locales:
The villas are in San Barberino, a small and charming historic hill town with a cafe for morning cappuccinos and brioche with the locals, a fantastic pizzeria and an equally wonderful restaurant. We would come back from exploring in the late afternoon, rest for a couple of hours, and then walk to one of the two eateries for dinner. They were both so good, and the menus interesting enough, to warrant frequent visits.
Directions:
Even with the GPS, we still missed the entrance since it is tucked discreetly around a corner.

Lisa, October

Overall:
The manager is truly a delightfully helpful, friendly, and vivacious hostess. I feel I made a new friend.
Enjoyed Most:
The view from the front of the villa was simply beautiful beyond description. The town of Barberino itself would have been well worth the trip. Despite traveling to see major places like Florence, Volterra, and Lucca, we could have simply sat on the villa's terrace and soaked in the beauty of the hillsides with their olive groves and vineyards, listened to the church bells in the distance, and breathed the autumn air.
Enjoyed Least:
Absolutely nothing!
Surrounding Area:
The ability to travel into the small villages and vineyards of the region. Traveling the back roads and meeting the warm and gracious people who speak little English was an amazing adventure. The scenery is astonishing and the people of Italy are perhaps the country's greatest asset.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Barberino and Tavernelle. Both were within easy walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
All of the restaurants in Barberino were quite good and reasonably priced. Reservations seemed to be very helpful, however, even in the "off season."
Check In Out:
The manager was very thorough and clear in showing us the details of the villa and acquainting us with the village. Check-in was quite easy and we felt warmly greeted.

Phil, October

Overall:
San Barberino is a great place to base Tuscany trips from and the villa is a comfortable, convenient home to come back to at the end of the day. We were so busy during the days that we didn't really have time to use the pool but I managed to squeeze in a quick dip one night after everyone else was in bed. It's down the hill from the house but the path and pool were well lighted. The air was cool so I didn't linger. On a sunny August day, I can imagine that was the place to be after a day of sightseeing.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, location, location. With a car we were less than half an hour from Volterra, San Gimignano, Colle di Val d'Elsa, Siena, and Florence (actually 40 minutes). Greve and all the "in Chianti" towns were a leisurely hour drive over the mountain. And the manager was wonderful, helping us arrange reservations to dinner and museums, giving us a copy of the bus schedule to Florence - very convenient - and telling us about the Internet access in the town library.
Enjoyed Least:
The back of the house, with 2 bedrooms and the kitchen, is right on the main road through town, so road noise was occasionally noticed, though usually not a problem. Waking up to the sound of people driving to work is not an unpleasant way to begin the day if you're on vacation yourself. At night, I was too tired from the day's travels to notice any road noise. The master bedroom - the one with the views off to the Tuscan sunset - had no problems with the road noise.
Surrounding Area:
Do take the manager up on the wine tasting offer. The owners of the villa also have a large vineyard and winery about 2 km outside San Barberino and they enjoy showing off the results of their life's labors. The day we went was also the first day of the harvest with the full moon the night before! and we passed the stems and skins of the first crush as we entered. They'd prepared a wonderful plate of cinghiale salumi, assorted peccorino cheeses, and Tuscan breads to accompany the first-rate wines that they served. The wines included a 2004 Chianti Classico and a 100 Sangiovese Super Tuscan - both wonderful wines.
Nearby Events or Locales:
You are in San Barberino and can walk up the hill to the small grocery store in 2 minutes, the wonderful Campenillino restaurant in 3 minutes, and the Bar on the other side of the hill in just 5 minutes. Because San Barberino is perched atop a ridge, you have wonderful glimpses of the the surrounding Tuscan landscapes as you walk through the old town. Tavarnelle is a short 2 km drive if you need the greater selection of the COOP grocery or want to try out another local restaurant
Tips or Restaurants:
The library is just up the hill from the villa, a 2 minute walk, and that's where you can get on the internet. Unfortunately, it's only open 4 hours each day since the librarian spends the other 4 hours at the library in Tavarnelle. The hours alternate from morning to afternoon. The kitchen is pretty well equipped - about the only thing we needed to bring was a cutting board.

Stephen, September

Overall:
We would recommend it in a heartbeat to anyone wanting to experience small town Italian life.
Enjoyed Most:
The view was fantastic and the town so quaint - just what we wanted.
Enjoyed Least:
The street noise during the day was no problem and was what we had read to expect. But it didn't die down at night with motorcycles leaving the bar across the street until all hours of the night. With no AC, the windows needed to be open and the noise couldn't be blocked.
Surrounding Area:
The views, slowness of life.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Our small town was wonderful and we walked up the hill each day and sat at the sidewalk tables to enjoy coffee.
Tips or Restaurants:
The apartment was well stocked - more so than we had expected. If it hadn't been for the street noise it would have been PERFECT.

Doug , July

Overall:
I would definitely stay there again, but would prefer the apartment not backing up to the street.
Enjoyed Most:
The beautiful sunset view out the front windows. Cecile, the property manager, was very nice. The apartment was very clean and much larger than we expected.
Enjoyed Least:
The stairway to the second floor was very unusual. The first five steps were wooden open stairs with no handrail. At the landing the wooden steps were full steps but the handrail was a boat rope attached to the wall. The beds were very hard. The noise from the road was loud. We were aware of this but were surprised how loud it was.
Surrounding Area:
The surrounding area was beautiful. We drove all over Tuscany visiting wineries and visiting the surrounding cities. The apartment was very convenient.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Barberino Val d'Elsa was adorable. They were having their annual "rose festival". We enjoyed the music and the rose trellis decorations. The town was within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
We would have appreciated knowing where we could have bought egg crate mattress pads for the beds. The COOP store produce and meat were amazing, we enjoyed shopping like the locals.
Directions:
We had an English GPS which was wonderful with getting us everywhere we wanted to go. I would recommend everyone bring one with them if possible.

Nancy, June

Enjoyed Most:
The view and location. The keyholder was service-minded.
Enjoyed Least:
The noise from the road.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Barberino val D'Elsa. It was within walking distance.

Henning, May

Overall:
Cecile, who looks after the property is wonderful. If we are ever lucky enough to visit Tuscany again, we would definitely stay at this property, again. It is beautiful.
Enjoyed Most:
The villa was just beautiful, very modern facilities and so spacious!
Enjoyed Least:
There is nothing we did not like about the property.
Surrounding Area:
The closeness of an excellent bakery, small store and wonderful restaurants. The people were wonderful!
Nearby Events or Locales:
The property is on a main road leading into San Barberino. It is within walking distance and a short drive to a supermarket and the larger town of Poggibonsi.
Tips or Restaurants:
A good and inexpensive pizzeria is within walking distance, near the church. A lovely restaurant is also nearby.

Janelle, October

Enjoyed Most:
The view was amazing!! There was an area outside of our place that we could sit and admire the view. The pool area and garden were also very beautiful.
Enjoyed Least:
There was a bit of traffic noise as our apartment was right on the street. Also, the bed was uncomfortable. There were over 700 channels on the TV but only two English speaking channels. That was tough for us with our 9 month old daughter as we stayed in a lot.
Surrounding Area:
The people, the food and the wine. The scenery was also amazing.,
Nearby Events or Locales:
Yes, we were in Barberino Val D'elsa, and it was a beautiful old town.
Tips or Restaurants:
You really don't need to bring anything as it is well stocked.

Suzanne, October

Overall:
We had a fantastic time at San Barbarino and would recommend it to all of our friends and family as a great place to stay while visiting Tuscany.
Enjoyed Most:
We loved that we were a 2-minute walk to fantastic restaurants and cafes and only a short drive to great vineyards, Florence, San Gimignano and great Tuscan countryside. Also, as we sat near the pool, we looked over olive orchards and vineyards and the smell of lavender and roses washed over us......ah!
Enjoyed Least:
The road at the front of the house was busy in the morning, but it meant no wasting any part of the day.
Surrounding Area:
The wine, the people, the food were all fantastic. We had a great day out exploring the Florence markets.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Barbarino Val D'Elsa was well within walking distance and it had 3 great sit down restaurants, that we went back to most nights, as well as 2 cafe-bars for drinks, ice cream and coffee.
Tips or Restaurants:
Explore, explore, explore! Ask Celine if you have any questions, she is very helpful.

Michaela, August

Overall:
We went the last week in October and could not have asked for more perfect weather. We would wake up to the fog on the hills and watch as the castles and towns peaked out as it burned off. The countryside was just starting to turn and the colors were amazing!
Enjoyed Most:
The caretaker, Cecile, was wonderful. She got us information about the bus schedules and train schedules and was great! The view is like a movie setting - too perfect!! It has 2 grocery stores and 2 coffee-bar stores within walking distance. All the locals were very nice and our neighbors were great!
Enjoyed Least:
Need to bring your own spices - salt and pepper if you are going to cook.
Surrounding Area:
We were so close to all the great spots! Florence was only 30 km away, Siena was just as close and San Gimignano was even closer then those two cities. The bar to the left of the property was a local hangout and has a Foosball table and a couple of video games. The locals were very nice and let us play all night.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Tavernelle Val D' Elsa was only 2 km away and was just a bit larger then Barberino. We found a couple of restaurants there. The one-way streets at Tavernelle were a bit confusing until we learned how to get back.
Tips or Restaurants:
The restaurant in the hotel at Tavernelle was amazing and cheap! The staff were so friendly. The Butcher in Barberino was charming and we bought the most amazing salami from him.
Directions:
You really have to look out for the gates to enter the property, they are hard to see if you are coming from the north. They are just past the first section of houses and you can drive by them if you are not looking.
Check In Out:
Cecile was great!!

Ginger, October

Enjoyed Most:
The location was excellent, midway between Florence and Siena, perfect for day trips. The views of the Chianti vineyards and countryside were so incredible you wanted to pinch yourself to make sure you were really there experiencing it all.
Enjoyed Least:
The property is situated right on the Chianti highway, where the noisy motorists speed through.
Surrounding Area:
Tuscany is awesome, a perfect getaway. The people are warm and very family oriented. Nice area for strolling and taking it all in.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Barberino Val D'Elsa -I wish we spent more time getting to know the town. There's nice outdoor restaurants with beautiful views of the countryside, boutique shops and an excellent small grocery with fine meats, cheeses, produce and Chianti at good prices.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring washcloths and beach towels.
Check In Out:
The property manager is very accommodating. We really didn't need her help during our stay as she was very detailed in explaining it all after we checked in.

Barbara, June

Overall:
Can't say enough wonderful things about how incredible it was. We would definitely visit here again.
Enjoyed Most:
The space, cleanliness, efficiency, the view, the view, the view, location. Everything.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing! We loved everything!
Surrounding Area:
The charm and friendliness of the small town, and the people.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Being in Barberino Val D'Elsa, we didn't need for anything else.
Tips or Restaurants:
Suggestions...we simply asked Cecile about restaurants, grocery stores, etc., and she even made a dinner reservation for us on the first night, which, by the way, was fantastic in the old city.

Franco, May

Overall:
The location is ideal in terms of its proximity to Florence and Siena, the hill towns of Chianti, and San Gimignano. Pisa is also a reasonable distance.
Enjoyed Most:
The location is fabulous - right in town but with great garden and view. Everything about the accomodations is wonderful.
Enjoyed Least:
The hot water could have been hotter and the pillows could be replaced.
Surrounding Area:
It's the most beautiful place I have ever been. The people were lovely, the food inexpensive, the history and scenery outstanding.
Nearby Events or Locales:
I loved being right in Barberino Val D'Elsa - an absolutely charming town. We walked around in the old part of the village every day. If I had never left the town it would have been a great vacation.
Tips or Restaurants:
We really liked the two and only restaurants in town - the osteria and the pizzeria. The grocery store in the old village is very charming and reasonable and has great pastries.
Directions:
It is almost impossible not to get lost the first few times. People should be told to follow the signs to Siena until they get out of Tavarnelle.
Check In Out:
Cecile is as lovely and helpful as she could possibly be.
