Customer Reviews

Overall:
Wonderful!
Enjoyed Most:
The owners, the view. The best part were the meals prepared by one of the owners' mothers! Amazing, they were the best meals we had in all of our time in Italy.
Enjoyed Least:
Our unit was a bit noisy as we could hear others coming and going. Also, our unit did not have any balcony which we will ask for next time.
Surrounding Area:
Absolutely. We went walking on two different occasions, seeing birds and deer both times.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano--no, it is not walking distance. Having a car is necessary.
Tips or Restaurants:
No need to really bring anything. There is a PAM grocery located a few kilometers away that is great and would have everything you might need. An absolute must is eat at least one meal at the villa!
Directions:
The directions were fine. We did use a GPS which helped but wasn't essential.
Check In Out:
No, it was very smooth and efficient.

Peter, September

Overall:
We had a wonderful stay. They are the most delightful people and they maintain the villa superbly. The dinners you can elect to attend prepared by the owner's mother were amazing. Great place. Great people. Great food. Fantastic time. I would definitely return.
Enjoyed Most:
hmm..the dinners were superb. The location was great. The swimming pool was lovely. The people were wonderful.
Enjoyed Least:
The bed in the upstairs bedroom needs a new mattress. That's all. The bugs - well they are part of Tuscany and we left our windows open all night and let the bugs come and go.
Surrounding Area:
The scenery was beautiful and there was a supermarket about 5km away that was very handy for sundry items.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano. You could walk to it I'm sure but we didn't try. We only went there one day. The other days we were exploring other places.
Tips or Restaurants:
You should definitely dine all three nights at the villa when the mum prepares dinner. You can't get much more authentic and fantastic Tuscan dishes than that. The kitchen was well stocked and the microwave is an oven, too, so with some creativity, you can prepare some great stuff. Find out where the PAM supermarket is and pick up all of your supermarket sundries there. Felsina Winery is amazing if you are fortunate enough to be able to visit there.
Directions:
We did not use a GPS. We followed the instructions you provided us. Thank you.
Check In Out:
They picked our suitcases up in a little van and delivered them to our room, even though everything is so close by. Very good service. Check in was lovely. They are relaxed and gentle people.

Kellie, October

Overall:
It was wonderful. I would recommend this place to anyone who was looking for a villa in Tuscany.
Enjoyed Most:
To be honest, I liked everything about the property. I can honestly say that I have nothing bad to say.
Surrounding Area:
Everthing. This property is in the perfect location. It it close to all the major towns for day excursions.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We were halfway between San Gimignano and Poggibonsi. They said that you could walk but it was a little too far.
Tips or Restaurants:
We brought our own toilet paper, salt and pepper, sugar packages--little things that you would not necessarily want to buy in large quantity.
Directions:
We used GPS, but the written directions were also useful. The initial turn off for the property was well marked but more signage to the property along the dirt road would have been helpful.
Check In Out:
Both were very easy and fast. Everthing was very well organized.

Cory, September

Overall:
Excellent.
Enjoyed Most:
The view and the owners.
Enjoyed Least:
Killing the little beetles that sometimes can into the room.
Surrounding Area:
Charm and beauty.
Tips or Restaurants:
Food at lodging was wonderful 3 nights a week!
Directions:
We used a GPS
Check In Out:
The owners were extremely kind, efficient and welcoming.

Bobby, October

Enjoyed Most:
The scenery-view, the staff wonderful, the cleanliness, and the overall charm.
Enjoyed Least:
Property was a little remote, stove was hard to work, using the same towels for a week was tough, no towel hooks in the bathroom, air conditioning was a little temperamental.
Surrounding Area:
The surrounding area was beautiful and peaceful.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano was the nearest town. Not really within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a few extra towels, buy bottled water; tap water tastes a little funny. Get directions from proprietors before going anywhere; road signs-maps are very confusing in Italy. Ask proprietors for restaurant selections.
Check In Out:
Very easy, no problems.

Vanessa, September

Enjoyed Most:
The grounds are stunning. The people are awesome. The food is great. It is a lovely compromise between self-catering villa and inn, giving you the best of both worlds: privacy, a gorgeous pool that is cleaned daily, dinner available three times a week, an office open daily with a lending library, etc. The price is also extremely reasonable, given the quality of the apartment and the location.
Enjoyed Least:
The kitchen was a bit small, although not less than advertised, and the rate was extremely reasonable.
Surrounding Area:
It is very close to San Gimignano, and yet has a feeling of utter isolation. A large supermarket is only a few minutes away. Do go to Colle Valle d'Elsa, a lovely small town with wonderful shops and restaurants. Great ceramics and glass. It is also very convenient for a number of other towns-cities Florence, Siena, and one of our favorites, Volterra.
Nearby Events or Locales:
There are a couple of small towns nearby, Colle was our favorite. Despite the dire warnings about San Gimignano, we had less trouble parking there than Siena or Pisa, and found it quite fun to roam off the beaten tracks. Residents actually looked kind of surprised to see us.
Tips or Restaurants:
Arnolfo in Colle is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, not only for the food but for the stunning level of hospitality. A Michelin two-starred establishment, they did not bat an eyelash when our ratty family of three in shorts and sneakers, no less, and with a pre-teen showed up without reservations for lunch. What followed was bliss. What you order may very well be far less than you receive, for they present you with the most amazing morsels between courses. True class.

Overall:
We are definitely coming back. It is without a doubt the only way to visit Italy. Thank you.
Enjoyed Most:
The privacy, the view, and the way it integrates into the rest of the landscape and the surroundings.
Enjoyed Least:
The lack of Internet connection. Also, we felt that the six euro rental for the pool towel was unecessary.
Surrounding Area:
You really feel that you are in the middle of Tuscany. The location is excellent and the feeling of tranquility and peacefulness is superb.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town is Poggibonsi, although it's not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
We read on the web page that towel supplies were limited and brought our own set of extra towels.
Directions:
We had a GPS navigator so between the directions and the GPS had practically no problem. The fact that there are several properties on the hill make it a bit confusing.

Benjamin, July

Enjoyed Most:
Very clean and well functioning. The service was excellent by a very friendly staff.
Enjoyed Least:
The unit was a little small, especially the shared bathroom. If the living area was upgraded, there might be a reason to linger at the property, which would be nice.
Surrounding Area:
Fantastic views of Tuscany. Very convenient location for visiting some great towns such as San Gimignano, and Radda in Chianti.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano was a possible walk, although we didn't since we were usually out until well after dark.

Steven, October

Overall:
I would recommend this property without hesitation.
Enjoyed Most:
The owners were a pleasure to be around. They obviously love what they are doing and it shows.
Enjoyed Least:
Sound transference between units is always an issue when you have large gregarious groups next to you. There is little that can be done to eliminate it totally.
Surrounding Area:
The proximity to San Gimignano was great. It was nice to be able to experience it with and without the hordes of day tourists.
Tips or Restaurants:
The owners recommended Cirribiri in San Gimignano and it was wonderful.

Gerald, October

Overall:
It was wonderful and we hope to return!
Enjoyed Most:
The welcome from the owners, the cleanliness everything was great!
Enjoyed Least:
nil
Surrounding Area:
Was convenient for day trips .
Tips or Restaurants:
Buy dish soap, sugar, etc. La Terrazza in San Gimignano was excellent.

Lorie , August

Overall:
The owners were lovely people who made us feel welcome and really added to our stay. They were helpful and gracious at all times.
Enjoyed Most:
We loved many things, but in particular, the views, the peace and quiet, the large property, the history of the building and the beautiful restoration. The fact that they offered dinner on the beautiful patio; the pool area, etc.
Enjoyed Least:
The only things that we felt were lacking were more hooks in the bathroom to hang towels and wet clothes and Internet access for the guests, something that many properties seem to have now and is very nice to have.
Tips or Restaurants:
I would pack my own salt and pepper, sugar, and spices for cooking. Also pool towels.
Directions:
It might be helpful to indicate in your directions to go up the hill on the gravel road at the large sign that says Pietrafitta Wine Direct.

Barbara , July

Overall:
The proprietors are the best -- warm, friendly, helpful, full of great information . The Villa has quite a history, and the owners will be more than happy to share their experiences renovating a building that was built in the 1300's.
Enjoyed Most:
1. Location, 2. History, 3. Pool, 4. Ambiance 5. Proprietors
Enjoyed Least:
Number 7 had an inconvenient layout -- the metal spiral stairs to the master bedroom loft were difficult to maneuver, and I bonked my head more than once on the low roof beams. The kitchen was also quite small and it was difficult to cook a meal.
Surrounding Area:
We LOVED being in the Tuscan countryside, and, contrary to the authors of the Lonely Planet books, we found San Gimignano to be charming and uncrowded. The proximity to other great small Tuscan towns for example, Volterra and wineries, was also great.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano was about 3 or 4 kilometres. Poggibonsi was also convenient for food shopping.
Tips or Restaurants:
The set meal prepared by the proprietors 3 times during the week was delicious and a lot of fun.
Directions:
The dirt road that leads to the property was a bit hard to find, and we were not absolutely sure it was the right one. Also there is a fork in that road we happened to take the correct fork.
Check In Out:
Could not have been better.

Steven, June

Overall:
Great spot.
Enjoyed Most:
The property was beautifully maintained, spacious, and very well administered by a group who were friendly, very well informed, and spoke English fluently, which was a real bonus.
Enjoyed Least:
The only complaint would be the noise transference in this unit. Because everything is stone or concrete, sounds were magnified. Not a big deal. Just an occasional irritant. The advantages of the beautiful stone work far outweighed the disadvantage of the occasional unwelcome noise.
Surrounding Area:
Early mornings and late evenings in San Gimignano are great. During normal hours the town was a bit overrun by visitors. Easy access, five minutes from the property.
Tips or Restaurants:
Very well equipped rooms and kitchens. There was a Badia (abbey) about five miles outside of Gaiole in Chianti with the absolute best food of the trip. Well worth the drive and the towns in between, Castellina and Radda.

John , October

Overall:
I cannot say enough positive things about our choice- the owners were amazing and we have stayed in touch. The place is everything you'd want for a Tuscan vacation and I will definitely stay there again.
Enjoyed Most:
The views were absolutely outstanding. I could not have scripted a more beautiful location. The owners were wonderfully friendly, spoke good English, and went above and beyond to make their guests feel welcome and offer assistance in directions, suggestions, etc. The rooms were clean, spacious, modern, but warm, and very private.
Surrounding Area:
We were located in the heart of Tuscany, and San Gimignano was by far our favorite town of the whole trip. Since it was about a 10-minute drive away we went often and loved it!
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano- yes it was, but wouldn't have recommended it unless you are very fit and enjoy walking. We had a car so it was no problem. There is a grocery store nearby- called Pam, that was wonderful. Either buying food to cook would have been fine, or there were plenty of options for eating in San Gimignano. The first night of our stay, the owner's mom cooked a fantastic meal that we enjoyed immensely. It was nice to not have to go anywhere our first night there.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring detailed maps of the area. Parking in the cities is very difficult.

Julie, May

Overall:
There were several meals prepared on site by the owners that were great. There was also a good wine selection.
Enjoyed Most:
The atmosphere was very good and the owners were extremely pleasant and helpful.
Enjoyed Least:
The dirt road to the property was a little bumpy.
Surrounding Area:
The Italian people were great and the scenery was wonderful.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Poggibonsi. Could not walk to the nearest town.

Sam, October

Overall:
The villa was absolutely wonderful. We had a great time and will definitely recommend the place to friends. Perfect location and very nice amenities at a reasonable rate.

June

Overall:
Our week in Tuscany at this property was a dream come true. Our son had his 9th birthday while we were there and my husband took our two children horseback riding on this special day. The stables were close and they had three guides take them riding through the Tuscany mountains. What an experience! I stayed back and read a book.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything was elegant, yet comfortable and brand new! Just the entire setting was delightful! The owners were there everyday working very hard to make sure their guests had the best!
Enjoyed Least:
I have to say, absolutely nothing!
Surrounding Area:
Nothing was too far away. A large supermarket was close, an exciting towns were nearby and yet we were in the country.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano. Not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
We enjoyed shopping at the market and making dinner in the villa at night. The villa is very well stocked. Just bring a beach towel for the pool!

Jeff, June

Overall:
Our stay at Cortennano in Tuscany could not have been better. The accomadations were wonderful and the location was excellent. But the best part was the family that owned and operated it. I wanted to take them all home with me but why would they want to leave? It is so beautiful there. Thanks for all your help and I certainly would recommed this service to anyone.
