Overall:
We four girls absolutely LOVED it! It was what I imagined. The owners are VERY dedicated!
Enjoyed Most:
View, walking opportunities. Sandra, Simone, Ricardo, and Nicola were SOOOOOOOO patient and accommodating. They set up a cooking class, checked on transportation, set up horseback riding. They REALLY spent a lot of time trying to help... We really needed help wwith directions. Cooking class was a blast! Teacher so Italian, so great! Also important to note that I received great service from RentVillas--thank you to Nicole and Ashley!
Enjoyed Least:
The breakfast basket was a disappointment... After talking with friends who stayed elsewhere, I was expecting fresh fruit, fresh pastries... received processed cookies, crackers.
Surrounding Area:
Little towns, beauty, substantial, old homes/properties, taking the Chianti road tour was GREAT! We especially enjoyed Emma Winery...
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano...not really within walking distance. But, what a great little town! Loved the shopping, feeling, tone, restaurants... could have spent more time there.
Tips or Restaurants:
There was NOTHING in the apartment, BUT it seemed to work out. We had leftovers from dinners out for lunch. We did bring extra TP and napkins. Apartment was well-equipped with silver, dishes, pans. We wanted to eat out. Lovely restaurant on site BUT open only 3 nights per week. Nicola was so nice to bring us cappuccinos from kitchen because we were so bad at making espresso.
Directions:
Use a GPS and arrive in the daylight!

Overall:
Overall, it was a good experience. Views were incredible and owners were very nice and helpful.
Enjoyed Most:
Views and size of villa.
Enjoyed Least:
Beds were uncomfortable. Also, the air conditioner had not yet been installed for the season, even though it was late May and the weather was warm.
Surrounding Area:
Tuscany and San Gimignano, in particular, was beautiful.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano; it's about a 3-mile mile walk on a dirt road.

Tim, June

Overall:
Perfect place to spend time in Tuscany.
Enjoyed Most:
The view from this unit was the best on this property.
Surrounding Area:
All places we wanted to visit were easily accessible, the furthest being 1 1/2 hr ride.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano. Not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Take advantage of dinner offered at the Villa. We only had dinner once on our last evening and it was one of the best meals we had. Would do other evenings when offered.
Directions:
We came from Pisa so directions were not specific enough. We did have GPS and once we put in coordinates, we had no problem finding the property. Puttng coordinates in at beginning should avoid any difficulty.
Check In Out:
Process was easy. Staff very helpful in showing us around the unit and where everything was.

Robert And Diana, May

Overall:
Everything was perfect. The service and the surroundings were wonderful.
Enjoyed Most:
The views.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano; No, it was not within walking distance, but you can easily get a cab.
Tips or Restaurants:
Wash cloths and bug spray would be be helpful items to bring.
Directions:
We had a local driver.

Kathy, June

Overall:
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Il Cortile del Borgo 13. It was the Tuscan experience we had hoped to have. The owners and staff were friendly and accommodating. The owwners spoke English so translation was not a problem. The accommodations were modern and furnished with towels and tissue in the bathrooms. The kitchen had all the required utensils required as well as a modern gas stove stove and dishwasher. It was like a home away from home.
Enjoyed Most:
It is located on the side of a hill with vineyards and olive groves surounding it. The views are spectactular.
Enjoyed Least:
Lack of an elevator.
Surrounding Area:
The views.
Directions:
The signage could be improved.

Arnold, October

Overall:
Just exactly what I wanted it to be. It was quiet, relaxing, but also, a good base for day trips to many small villages in Tuscany.
Enjoyed Most:
The quiet and the friendly atmosphere. Great family that owns the property.
Enjoyed Least:
Steps. While it was worth it, it is not easy for anyone with problems going up or down steps hills.
Surrounding Area:
The villages, particularly San Gimignano, Certaldo, Montereggioni, Siena
Nearby Events or Locales:
Walking to San Gimignano is doable if you are a hiker.
Tips or Restaurants:
The apartment was very well furnished, but of course as Americans, we missed the washcloths.
Directions:
The directions were OK. We did not have any problems finding the property without GPS. It would be helpful to have some more specific markers to watch for to know you are headed in the right direction.
Check In Out:
This is family owned and operated and they are very friendly and accommodating. We were met at our car on arrival and all bags were handled for us, and also upon departure. They also provided a hairdryer upon request.

Dianne, May

Overall:
Our overall experience at the villa was just spectacular. The villa itself was beautiful, and the family who owns and runs the villa were extremely helpful and such a pleasure to talk with. The staff was always available and and excellent resource for our trips around Italy - with maps, directions etc. The few nights we ate dinner at the villa, which was prepared by the grandmother of the owners of the property, was fabulous. Overall our stay at the villa was excellent.
Enjoyed Most:
The owners of the property, and also the beautiful area in around the villa.
Enjoyed Least:
The unpaved road leading up to the villa was a bit difficult to navigate, but well worth the drive.
Surrounding Area:
The villa was located outside a small quaint town called San Gimignano which was beautiful place to walk around, It was also about a 1 hour drive to Florence, Pisa, Siena, etc, and approx. 3 hours from Rome.

Joy, August

Overall:
Fabulous. Did not want to leave and go sightseeing. Property far exceeded our expectations. It was much better in person than on the web site. Our best meals were probably the two that were prepared by our hosts on the night we arrived and the night before we departed. Upon arrival we found out that there is indeed wireless access in the reception area most of the time. Many guests had brought their laptops and were using them in the area outside the reception room.
Enjoyed Most:
Serenity and view. We had a large grassy outside area with 2 fig trees and plenty of comfortable outdoor furniture. We had all our breakfasts and some lunches and dinners on a large table under one of the fig trees. Also, we did not have any mosquito problem. We did not have any problem accessing the washing machine either.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing. However, be advised that the property is very hilly. We had a steep walk from our room to the reception area, then another fairly steep walk to the parking lot and a very steep walk to the pool.
Surrounding Area:
Driving around and stopping when we felt like it.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano was the closest one and although it was walking distance, but a very long walk. It did not occur to us to walk - the roads were way too dusty, hilly and it was too hot.
Tips or Restaurants:
We checked in and then went to the local grocery store closing time 8PM and purchased what we needed. We learned that before you bring your produce and fruit to the check out stand, you have to weigh it yourself and price it yourself on a scale and chart provided by the store. We did not know this and held up the check out line quite a bit on our first visit to the store. We also spent quite a bit of time looking for milk and eggs since they are not located in the refrigerated area. Not really necessary to bring anything unless you have some favorite spices. The apartment had plenty of dishes, silverware, glasses, pots and pans and also a pannini maker and a coffee maker.

Britt, July

Overall:
We had a wonderful time at Il Cortile del Borgo. The property sits up on a hill overlooking stunning Tuscan countryside. It is very quiet and serene. It is a terrific place for couples or families.
Enjoyed Most:
The property has a multitude of small outdoor spaces to gather, sit, read, enjoy a glass of wine. We were constantly discovering new spaces, new views. The property was completely rebuilt a few years ago by the owners. All modern conveniences are present and none of the charm of a classic Tuscan estate have been lost. As the property was of historic value the remodel had to conform quite precisely to the original structure. It took 2 1/2 years to finish and the attention to detail is everywhere. Ask to see the photos of the remodel process.
Enjoyed Least:
The kitchen is small, though very nicely appointed. And, as we like to cook and ate most of our meals in, this took some getting used to.
Surrounding Area:
The nearest town is Poggibonsi, about 8 minutes away. There is a very good market there, Pam, where we did all our grocery shopping. The great thing about the location of this property is that it is centrally located in a wonderful part of Tuscany. Siena, Florence, Chianti and Pisa are all about an hour away. Lucca is only 1 1/2 hrs away. San Gimignano was about 15 minutes.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town was San Gimignano, a 15 minute drive up the road. This property is located up on a hill, so staying here without a car is not really practical.
Tips or Restaurants:
I would recommend future renters bring a camping spice kit. It is possible to purchase whatever food you want at the Pam, but buying a bunch of spices would be unreasonable. From what I understand, the property has a wonderful restaurant on the property. The space looked terrific. Unfortunately, we were there in mid April and the restaurant does not open until May. We will have to return.
Directions:
The property is a solid 3 hours from the airport in Rome. It is an easy drive. We had a cell phone with us on our trip and I would highly recommend anyone traveling in Europe have one. We used it a number of times to communicate with the owner's and representatives of the various properties we stayed in.

Anne, April

Overall:
The family that owns the villa is very helpful. They will help you plan your travel days, find restaurants, and whatever else you need assistance with.
Enjoyed Most:
It is tough to say. The villa itself is beautiful. The rooms were very spacious. But probably the best part was the hospitality of the owners and the dinners they prepare 3 nights per week.
Enjoyed Least:
My only real complaint was that the villas have absolutely nothing in them - so you have to buy everything - salt, pepper, toilet paper, soap, spices, oils, coffee, sugar, etc. I would suggest that they either retain what previous renters leave behind so each person doesn't have to buy everything new, or sell a starter kit with the essentials for about 10 Euros for the basics. One other suggestion would be to add a washer-dryer. It looks like the plumbing is already there for it. The existing set is pretty slow. When we went to use it - someone else's wet clothes were in the dryer from the night before. This slowed us down an hour or so despite getting up early to be the first in line.
Surrounding Area:
There are lots of interesting towns close by - San Gimignano, Volterra, Siena, etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano is within 2 miles. We didn't walk it, but could have.
Tips or Restaurants:
Unless they start stocking the villas a little more, I'd suggest bringing some of the essentials with you - spices, salt, pepper, etc.

Rebecca, September

Overall:
We loved it!
Enjoyed Most:
We loved the stunning views and the elegance of this beautifully restored villa. We loved the privacy of the outdoor garden-patio areas attached to the ground floor apartments. The owners-staff were most accommodating and pleasant.
Surrounding Area:
Simply gorgeous! We liked the feeling of the villa being among working vineyards and olive orchards. We got a sense of the daily life of Tuscany. We also appreciated the proximity to San Gimignano which proved to be our favorite town.
Tips or Restaurants:
The "universal" transformers-adaptors that we brought with us didn't fit the outlets in the villa, but the management did have some available. For those of us with cell phones, laptops, Blackberries, etc., be aware that the electricity in the villa goes off when you leave the villa with your key, so re-charge time is only possible when you are in the villa. We found the villa adequately stocked with towels, soap, etc.

Phyllis, September

Overall:
Everything was great!
Enjoyed Most:
The beauty, the views, clean, decorated beautifully, great hosts.
Enjoyed Least:
The Tuscany villa was perfect!
Surrounding Area:
The people, the countryside, access to the most amazing towns and cities
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano-45-hour walk...so good for a nice long walk for exercise down a beautiful country road; 5-10 min car ride.
Tips or Restaurants:
2-way walkie talkies to communicate when people want to go off on their own within a town or city. Research European cell phones, we got the one recommended - cellular abroad....still didn't work well. Great restaurants in San Gimignano. In Florence: Bocadama and Aqua al Due.

Debbie, June

Overall:
This property exceeded all of our expectations and your hosts are delightful, helpful and welcoming. GO!
Enjoyed Most:
The property is beautiful and perfectly maintained.
Enjoyed Least:
I can't think of one thing!
Surrounding Area:
There is a panoramic view of surrounding hills and valleys and the villa is located 10 minutes from San Gimignano.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano. Yes you could walk.
Tips or Restaurants:
Do not miss the three dinners a week offered. They are superb and some of the best meals we had on our trip.

Jo-ellen , May

Overall:
Often I have found that Internet sites produce a false sense of grandeur about properties. This is the opposite - it was much lovelier than I had expected.
Enjoyed Most:
It exceeded my expectations! The family that owns and runs the property are warm, welcoming and such fun. The view from our private garden was over olive trees, vineyards and Tuscan hills - just breathtaking. Everything was so clean and well maintained.
Enjoyed Least:
The driveway had huge bumps that were hard on the undercarriage of the car. I realize beds are different than in North America, but for such an elegant place, the beds were very uncomfortable.
Surrounding Area:
Absolutely loved San Gimignano and it was only 10 minutes away. It was so easy to just go into a round about and take a different exit and find yourself somewhere in Chianti.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Poggibonsi and San Gimignano were both about 10 minutes away in opposite directions. You have to have a car at this villa to get to any shopping.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring along a boater's towel quick-drying and light to pack and facecloths. Buy some wild boar sausage at the deli and try it in your pasta sauces - delicious. I cooked mostly, but certainly in San Gimignano there are plenty of restaurants worth trying.
Directions:
Take a deep breath! Driving in Italy is always daunting but as long as you have a map you can always find your way. We found a good landmark for the turnoff up the dirt road was the old yellowish building-winery sitting right beside the road.
Check In Out:
It felt like being welcomed by long lost relatives. Great people.

Rhonda, October

Overall:
We shall return, it was perfect.
Enjoyed Most:
The views, the location in Tuscany, the family owners, the dining was fantastic.
Enjoyed Least:
We took my elderly mother who had difficulty climbing the steps but the family picked her up whenever we asked and drove her through the vineyards to the parking area. It worked perfectly but only because the family owners were wonderful.
Surrounding Area:
Right in the middle of vineyards, olive groves with wonderful views and close to San Gimignano, the perfect village.
Tips or Restaurants:
The owners cook 3 nights a week --- don't miss the feast --- it is fantastic.

Michael, October

Overall:
The owners bought Cortile del Borgo in 1998. They shared pictures with us of just exactly what they bought into, since the property was only a dilapidated shell. It is truly magnificent what they have done with the property. It was absolutely a labor of love.
Enjoyed Most:
This newly renovated property is only a short distance to San Gimignano, so we were able to drive there in a matter of minutes. The owners were friendly and helpful, not to mention very hard working. We loved the true Tuscan feel that Cortile del Borgo gave to us. We were relaxed and felt like we had the entire property to ourselves, since we very seldom ran into other guests.
Enjoyed Least:
I can't think of anything that I didn't like.
Surrounding Area:
We had a car and were able to drive to 5 other hill towns. We enjoyed visiting them all because each one had its own special feel. There was beautiful scenery everywhere we looked. We also enjoyed the slow pace as we enjoyed an cappuccino in many of the town piazzas.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Our nearest town was San Gimignano. It was probably 5-6 miles away. Although we drove, there were people hiking the same road. Parking was VERY difficult in every one of the hill towns that we visited.
Tips or Restaurants:
The kitchen was well equipped. We took a sharp knife, but probably didn't need to. You are given one towel for the entire week unless you wanted to pay a small fee for extras. I would also suggest bringing your own bar of soap, since the small hotel bars were all that were available and were not replenished.
Check In Out:
We arrived late and in the rain. But one of the owners stayed until we arrived and provided umbrellas while he personally handled our luggage.

Mykie, September

Enjoyed Most:
The setting is just lovely. It is a good compromise to be in the country with a great view and yet only a few kilometers from civilization.
Enjoyed Least:
The fifteen apartments share one small washing machine which takes approximately two hours to do a small load, so plan accordingly. People downstairs can also hear activity in the upstairs apartments (footsteps, chairs being scraped, et cetera) since the floor amplifies the noise.
Surrounding Area:
It is lovely and quiet, the countryside is truly beautiful.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano is the closest town, it is about 6 kilometers from the property. It is walkable, yet with the heat this summer I would not reccommend it until the temperature drops.
Tips or Restaurants:
You can buy most things in the local supermarket if it is needed. Bring dryer sheets, however, if you like to use them. San Gimignano has a number of really nice restaurants which the office staff can tell you about.
Check In Out:
People are extremely pleasant and helpful.

Deborah, July

Overall:
This property was like heaven on earth. We can't wait to go back.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything. The apartment was beautiful, comfortable and roomy. The property has the most amazing views. The meals that are prepared three times a week by the owners are the best you will eat in Italy. The pool is wonderful and relaxing.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing.
Surrounding Area:
We loved being in a relaxing and peaceful villa within a few minutes drive of San Gimignano, a great place to walk around the shops, eat at a restaurant and people watch. Volterra, a beautiful town a half hour away, was our favorite place to visit. Pam and COOP Supermarkets are close by for whatever you need.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a hair dryer if you need one and insect repellent. Stay for the delicious meals the owners prepare. Fantastic!

Rita, July

Enjoyed Most:
General ambiance, the proprietors, and the meals served at the villa. The location allows great access to almost all of Tuscany.
Enjoyed Least:
It was a little difficult to drive to.
Surrounding Area:
The villa is located in an area of typical Tuscan landscape with rolling hills, vineyards, patches of forest, hilltop towns and castles.
Tips or Restaurants:
Take advantage of the very good supermarket in Poggibonsi, PAM. It has just about all one needs and is only 10 minutes away

Neal, June

Overall:
Outstanding! A wonderful setting, a lovingly restored building and perfectly charming, warm and helpful people. This is the kind of place that makes people think of Tuscany as paradise.
Enjoyed Most:
The setting, the apartments themselves and particularly the people. Sandra, Ricardo and Nicola were wonderful!
Enjoyed Least:
The shower stalls were really, really small, and the kitchenette was pretty small and not very well equipped.
Surrounding Area:
San Gimignano and the surrounding area is beautiful and so convenient to all of Tuscany.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano. It is about 5 km to walk.
Tips or Restaurants:
They serve dinner at at the property three nights a week. In summer outside with a lovely view of the vineyards and valley; at other times in a lovely cellar converted to a dining room. The food was home-made and delicious. They have some lovely wines. Quite affordable. A great way to end a Tuscan touring day.
Check In Out:
The level of personal attention was outstanding.

John, May

Enjoyed Most:
We thought the owners were incredibly helpful, engaging, and enthusiastic. They were always ready to tell us how to get to a certain city, what restaurants were recommended, and to share what life is like in Tuscany. The property itself was immaculate and the view was to die for. We would return in a heartbeat!
Enjoyed Least:
There really was nothing that we did not like about the whole experience. The washer and dryer are not what we are used to but are standard for Europe.
Surrounding Area:
We were able to drive or take public transportation easily to Florence, Siena, and the Chianti area. The view from the villa itself was incredible and changed with the weather. We made a conscious effort to spend one whole day at the villa so that we could enjoy the ambiance of just being there.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano is the nearest small town and is about four kilometers away. We walked there twice, though we only walked one way and had a member of our party come by car for the return trip.
Tips or Restaurants:
If you plan to do any cooking you need to bring small plastic baggies of staples that you might need. We ended up buying salt and pepper, for example, and then used it only once for some eggs. The kitchen was well equipped with cooking utensils, but did not have any food items.
Directions:
We had no trouble finding the place.

Randy, April

Enjoyed Most:
The setting is beautiful and it is centrally located so that we could tour to many areas in Tuscany.
Enjoyed Least:
The apartment where we stayed was damp and musty. There had been some rain the week before we were there, but I think this is a continuous problem due to it being located on the bottom of the building. The kitchen is equipped rather sparely, but most of all, we would have liked to have them provide clean towels mid-week against the rules to launder them ourselves and a soap dish in the shower.
Surrounding Area:
We hiked and made day trips to San Gimignano, Siena, Volterra, Firenze, Cortona and the Chianti area.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano which was quite a long walk. We drove the back road instead.
Tips or Restaurants:
The dinner served three nights a week by the hosts is wonderful!
Check In Out:
Ricardo met us as soon as we drove up and took our luggage to our rooms. He also provided the same service when we left. It was nice to not have to carry our bags up the stairs to our car.

Grace, October

Enjoyed Most:
The people that ran the place where the absolute BEST!!!!!!!!!! They could not do enough for you in the most pleasant way.
Enjoyed Least:
Not enough lighting to read by at night.
Surrounding Area:
BEAUTIFUL
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a reading light. Ask the owners for restaurant suggestions.

Harvey, September

Enjoyed Most:
View and the personnel
Enjoyed Least:
Cleaning only before and after. 2nd bath not part of the second bedroom...it was across the hall and the 2nd bedroom had very little storage
Surrounding Area:
The views, the restaurants and the ease of getting around
Nearby Events or Locales:
Poggibonsi or San Gimignano was the nearest town and nothing was in walking distance
Tips or Restaurants:
Ask the owners for their restaurant choices. Do not bring a jacket.

Gilbert, July

Overall:
Great experience. I think a great place to stay with whichever agenda you may have...just hanging out at their beautiful pool and enjoying the Tuscan landscape or taking day trips to the Tuscan towns of San Gimignano, Siena, Lucca, Pienza, Greve, Florence...all within 5min to 1hour drives.
Enjoyed Most:
Beautiful setting...very peaceful and relaxing. The owners were fabulous. They were very accommodating and eager to please with any help they could. The dinners they offered were incredible!
Enjoyed Least:
nothing
Surrounding Area:
Great location. Very close to many of the Tuscan towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano. A beautiful walk or run would get you there..about 3kilometers. Poggibonzi was where the grocery store is and is about a 10 min drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
Definitly take the owners up on the dinner offers..three times during the week. Eat lots of pizza on the small town streets...it's the best.
Check In Out:
The owners were there to greet everyone, carry the bags to the rooms and make sure we had everything that we needed.

Deena, June

Overall:
This beautiful property is owned and managed by 2 couples Sandra and Nicola, and Riccardo and Simona. They really go out of their way to make you feel at home and comfortable. By mid-week, we felt like family. Leaving them behind as we left for home was probably the most difficult part of seeing our vacation end. We're sorry that they are so far away.
Enjoyed Most:
The sense of tranquility with charm. The place oozed relaxation.
Enjoyed Least:
Can't really think of anything negative. The ownerss offered 3 dinners. One the day of arrival weclome dinner, one on Tuesday, then a farewell dinner on Friday. After having the welcome dinner, we vowed to join them for the other 2. What's negative about this? Well, the food was so good, so well presented, and served in such a fabulous setting overlooking the vinyards that we we were disappointed that we couldn't take all our meals from the kitchen!
Surrounding Area:
The location was outstanding. We we're within 15-20 minute drive of some very quaint villages that included Colle Val D'Elsa and Volterra. Siena was 25 minutes, Florence a quick 30-35. Of course San Gimignano was no more than 8 minutes by car, or a 30 minute walk. We took very pleasant meals in small local restaurants in the first 2 towns mentioned above where there were few tourists. This made it all the better for us to really enjoy the effervescent Tuscan hospitality in it's natural state, uncorrupted by the demands of high volume tourism.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Gimignano was the closest town. Although we expected large crowds of tourists when we saw the parking lots full on the edge of town, this wasn't the case. The village is a car-free zone, so the expected crush of people was merely an illusion. The village is big enough for everyone to spread out and explore without bumping into each other. At night the town is really more charming and cozy with the only remaining visitors being those residing in the towns small hotels.
Tips or Restaurants:
The PAM supermarket is the place to find everything you need for cooking in a nicely upscale and modern market. They offer an excellent selection of Tuscan wines at very good prices. It's only a 7-10 minute ride from the Villa. In Colle Val D'Elsa, we enjoyed the restaurant called SFIZIO. The host Michael was very accomodative of my wife's vegetarian needs, and the local Tuscan preparations and specialties were very, very good. We had both lunch and dinner there on separate days.
Check In Out:
Our hosts greeted us in the parking lot! They introduced themselves with smiles and charming broken English, and made us feel at home from the first instant. Our luggage was wisked to our apartment and our check-in was a breeze.

Jerry, July

Overall:
The two couples who own and manage the place are just wonderful. Also the meals they serve three nights a week are great. They should let guests know ahead of time that dinner is offered on Saturday night. Guests should be able to sign up for it prior to arrival.
Enjoyed Most:
It was beautiful and the owners were delightful. It's one of the nicest places I've stayed in Tuscany. Also, Italy was hot, hot hot in July over 100 and the air conditioning was fantastic.
Enjoyed Least:
I'm used to the hills of Tuscany, but even I was surprised how difficult it was to go up and down the gravel, rutted road to the place. Also I was not expecting the property to be on such a steep incline once I was there.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Poggibonsi. No, nothing was in walking distance.
