Customer Reviews

Overall:
This was an exceptional experience. The villa is over 400 years old and was completely renovated by the architect owner. His wife Elizabeth is the hostess and is very welcoming and helpful with recommendations for local restaurants and sites.
Enjoyed Most:
Very quiet and secluded but close to town.
Surrounding Area:
Yes, very authentic Tuscany. Winding roads, easy train ride to Florence. And close to other Tuscan towns and cities.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town is Certaldo, about 6km.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a good GPS. The roads are really confusing. Elizabeth has a list of great restaurants and local eateries.
Directions:
GPS, GPS, GPS.
Check In Out:
Check in was a non event as was checkout. Elizabeth made the visit a delight.

Steve, May

Overall:
Lovely accommodations with beautiful setting.
Enjoyed Most:
The grounds and the size.
Surrounding Area:
Beautiful.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo. Roads not safe for walking.
Tips or Restaurants:
Many good restaurants.
Directions:
We had a GPS but we had trouble finding the property.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth was wonderful.

Linda, May

Overall:
It was wonderful! Exceeded our expectations!
Enjoyed Most:
The view and the villa itself.
Enjoyed Least:
Dryer was not working. I was counting on doing laundry there because we had a 33 day trip in Europe and I was needing laundry service at the time. So Elizabeth did our laundry for us! She's terrific!
Surrounding Area:
So many lovely towns within easy driving distances.
Directions:
We did use a GPS but it was a GARMIN and Elizabeth said that Garmins do not do well in that one area. We had to call her for help.
Check In Out:
Everything was easy!

Kathleen, October

Overall:
Very positive. The outside setting was lovely. The villa is in a great location for those who wish to travel around Tuscany. Kitchen was well stocked. Two supermarkets, PAM and COOP, were within a short driving distance away.
Enjoyed Most:
The villa owner, Elizabeth, who was very accommodating and addressed all our needs. When we got lost on arriving in Certaldo, she came and got us. When the villa lost power for a few hours, she provided us with candles and lights.
Enjoyed Least:
The WiFi had some issues during our stay. However, when brought to Elizabeth's attention, she was able to fix the problem.
Surrounding Area:
The game preserve was great to walk in at dusk. Being surrounded by vineyards was lovely. Certaldo is just a short drive away and the town square is not to be missed, especially on a Friday or Saturday night.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano. You could walk but the roads are so narrow.
Tips or Restaurants:
Il Paese Dei Campanelli was an outstanding restaurant within a half hour driving distance. Do be sure to explore all the little towns around the villa. Plan to shop on your first or second day to pick up all the necessaries for daily living.
Directions:
Travelers arriving after dark should be aware that some of the references on the map are not visible at 9 PM because there's minimal to no lighting. Our plane which was to have landed in Florence around 3 was diverted to Bologna which meant were weren't driving to the villa until around 9:30 due to the travel issues.
Check In Out:
Because we arrived so late, we had no chance to shop. However, we'd brought coffee and Elizabeth gave us some milk, which helped a lot.

Susan , September

Overall:
Very good.

Enjoyed Least:

Marylou, September

Overall:
Our experience at La Solaia exceeded our expectations. It was a very beautiful space, with an open air feeling and beautiful light and cross breezes.
Enjoyed Most:
The impeccable renovation with attention to every detail, the light and air and ceiling fans, the screens on the windows, the beautiful swimming pool, and the central location. We also really liked, Elizabeth, the owner of the property and loved the fact that she lived on the property.
Surrounding Area:
We enjoyed the central location and the quiet small villages that were nearby.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town was Certaldo and it was not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Elizabeth, the owner, offered a great list on local restaurants and stores (although in August they have very erratic hours).

Linda, August

Overall:
We had a wonderful time. Elizabeth is very helpful . It's a comfort to know someone was there if we had questions about the area, stores, and medical issues.
Enjoyed Most:
The outdoor seating, the view from the property, seating on the lawn, unlimited use of the pool.
Enjoyed Least:
We were there during a heat wave, so lack of central air conditioning was difficult. We had ceiling fans and additional fans were provided.
Surrounding Area:
There was a great local place to eat, good local wines.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo and Certaldo Alto a medieval town; we rented a car so it was a 5-minute drive
Tips or Restaurants:
Marone's, the local place, is inexpensive and has great pizza and pasta dishes.
Directions:
We used the map app on our phone which worked better than the GPS (which would lose signal intermittently).
Check In Out:
We got lost going to the villa from the airport, but the local people were so helpful and friendly.

Joann, August

Overall:
Great experience. Solid and comfortable house. Elizabeth was very gracious.
Enjoyed Most:
The location is perfect. Inside the house everything was laid out nicely, very clean, and everything worked.
Enjoyed Least:
There could have been a better outdoor area to sit or eat.
Surrounding Area:
Farmland is what we wanted. Very pretty.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo. Not walking distance but easy to get to.
Tips or Restaurants:
Certaldo Alto is beautiful. The nearby pizzeria in Sciano is a great, local, informal restaurant.
Directions:
Needed a GPS.
Check In Out:

Ray, May

Overall:
We had a great time during our stay.
Enjoyed Most:
3 couples, 3 bathrooms. Nice location--lots room in the villa. Great hostess.
Surrounding Area:
It was beautiful countryside. Close drive to groceries and sights.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We could walk to the town, Staggia. It was very small. No groceries that we found. But a nice enough restaurant.
Tips or Restaurants:
Purchase toilet paper. We almost forgot that was our responsibility. Our hostess had been sure there was some there.
Directions:
Nope. We drove by our first time. Just needed to regroup. Found it on the second try.
Check In Out:
We had no problems.

Michael, May

Overall:
Our experience at the villa was wonderful.
Enjoyed Most:
The beautiful view and the privacy.
Enjoyed Least:
We encountered some WiFi trouble that was corrected after a few days.
Surrounding Area:
The area was beautiful, stunning views over each hill you crested. We always felt safe and secure. We all took several walks throughout the area and truly enjoyed the countryside .
Nearby Events or Locales:
There was a nice restaurant in walking distance but stores and services were about 5 miles away. A vehicle is needed , which we were well informed of so that was no surprise to us.
Tips or Restaurants:
We had a chef come in one night to prepare a meal for us and the kitchen was a little short on pots and pans for a gourmet meal. The host had a list of good restaurants in the area as well as directions to them, all of which were excellent.
Directions:
The directions were good. We had a GPS that was invaluable for driving in the area, but the directions to the villa got us there with out trouble.
Check In Out:
It could not have gone any smoother.

Grant, May

Overall:
Extremely relaxing and enjoyable.
Enjoyed Most:
Location near train and easy driving to Siena and hill towns.
Enjoyed Least:
Bathrooms could be larger.
Surrounding Area:
Lots to see around town and good restaurants.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo--not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Come with an open mind.
Directions:
Did not use GPS. It is just not an easy place to find the first time.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth made it very smooth and easy.

Larry, October

Overall:
We were greated very warmly by Elizabeth. She made us feel very welcome. Whenever we needed something she was there immediately with help. She was an excellent source for food, entertainment and travel.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, location, location!
Surrounding Area:
The vineyards, hill towns, the restaurant down the road and Certaldo with its friendly people and interesting old town.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano has a great restaurant but was not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Mosquito repellent, bring - salt pepper, sugar, have a rental car, learn some Italian. Pizzeria Mareno in Sciano is a great restaurant. Explore Certaldo and go up the Funiculare (sp) to the top and find out about old Certaldo.
Directions:
The GPS can get you to Sciano, the nearest town. It was hard to see the statue of Mary which was part of the directions. If we would have seen this we would have been on the correct road.
Check In Out:
The check in and check out process was painless and quick.

Donna, October

Overall:
We originally booked the villa as a place for 5 of us to stay while we were visiting Florence. As it turned out, we enjoyed the villa more than our experiences in Florence! The villa was within a 5 km distance to the local town train which took us to Florence and Siena very easily. We enjoyed the beautiful views from the property and swimming in and lounging around the pool which we had to ourselves.
Enjoyed Most:
The views, the elegance and spaciousness of the villa, and the pool. Our hostess was very inviting, personable and accommodating and that made our stay very pleasant.
Enjoyed Least:
Lack of a good cutting knife. Not a big deal, though.
Surrounding Area:
Really enjoyed Certaldo Alto. Would not likely have discovered it if not for staying at the villa. We also enjoyed driving around the secondary country roads and through the small villages around the area.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo was the nearest town. I guess one could have biked there as the villa had bicycles for our use but we always drove as it was about 5 km away. We shopped in Certaldo and also in Poggibonsi where the grocery stores (Pam and Coop) both had an excellent assortment of cheeses, wine, fish and meats as well as general groceries. A small local shop in Certaldo also had freshly made entrees which were delicious.
Tips or Restaurants:
The hostess provided lots of information about the surrounding areas and things to see as well as good restaurants and local food shopping suggestions.
Directions:
We used a GPS and I would say that was critical to all of our driving in Italy.

Gabriel, September

Overall:
The owner did everything to make our stay perfect.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, views.

Gudrun, August

Overall:
A trip to Tuscany had been a longtime dream of mine. It can be intimidating planning a trip of a lifetime via the internet, sight unseen so to speak. Once our party landed in Florence and began to pull away from the congestion of the city, the surrounding countryside began to set the stage for our trip. The excellent directions to the property and the warm greeting that we received upon arrival started our vacation in the most pleasant way and it only got better from there. The villas (we had a chance to see all 3--La Solaia, Villa Certaldo, and Villa Sella) are extraordinary, remodeled with skill, passion, and pride. Solaia itself presents as an open, flowing but "homey" space. The rooms are commodious, the bathrooms impeccably clean. (One small suggestion - a full length mirror for those foolish enough to want to see how we look from behind!). The outdoor property space begged for you to take your morning coffee there to watch the sunrise and the morning fog burn away or to savor a glass of local wine in quietude as evening spread itself over hill and dale. The experience....like living in a beautiful post card.
Enjoyed Most:
Aside from our hostess Eliaabeth, the facility's most valuable asset is its proximity to immediate places for exploration and the train station for short journeys to Florence, Siena, and other small jewels so that all parties could enjoy the local food and wines.
Surrounding Area:
A short trip in any direction enabled me and my party to seek exactly what we had envisioned when planning this trip.....a step back to an easier place in time rich in history and beauty while indulging personal favorites - good food and good wine.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo, 4 kilometers away, was the nearest small town. Walking distance depends on one's perspective. Certainly doable but not for us while vacationing.
Tips or Restaurants:
I highly recommend taking the "funiculare" to Certaldo Alto, the medieval walled city above Certaldo, and having dinner at "OSTERIA del Vicario". The views and the food are fantastic.
Directions:
We did not have a GPS. However, remind those choosing to use one that directions and instructions need to be accessible in one's native language or a translation app on a device one has brought needs to be available.
Check In Out:
The process was seamless. Elizabeth could not be more helpful and accessible. Truly one of the best experiences of my life.

Lorena, July

Overall:
The villa was fabulous! The owner, Elizabeth, was very helpful and full of information.
Enjoyed Most:
It was very clean and up to date. Also it was very private. We enjoyed the very short walk to the tiny church on Sunday mornings. The church held about 30 people.
Enjoyed Least:
Nit-picking now. The dryer did not dry the clothes properly. We had to hang them on a rack outdoors.
Surrounding Area:
The views were spectacular. Very little car traffic. Driving around was stress-free.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo. No. A short 5-7 minute drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
The best coffee and pastry place was at the little shop in front of the train station. Great tasting and freshly made pastries. Most of the better restaurants were located in Old Certaldo. Very picturesque with fabulous views. The villa had everything you will need other than food and personal items.
Directions:
I had a GPS but it could not find the address. We ended up approaching the villa from a different direction in order to find it, using the directions given.
Check In Out:
We rang the entry bell at the gate but to no avail. Ended up going around the gate via the villa entrance and rang the bell at the manor house.

Ralph, June

Overall:
It was very nice.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, and the villa was very nice.
Surrounding Area:
Beautiful countryside.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano
Tips or Restaurants:
GPS system would be helpful.
Directions:
We used a GPS and it was helpful at the beginning.

Kenneth And Marianne, June

Overall:
Elizabeth is an excellent host, and she really made sure everything was in the right place, or provided direction. She even made calls in Italian on our behalf to arrange dinner reservations or order take out food! Really enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the property and the Tuscan countryside.
Enjoyed Most:
The tranquility of the property. The location in relation to the different cities that we visited in Tuscany. And Elizabeth as our host.
Surrounding Area:
The beauty of the vineyards and the surrounding hillsides. The charm of the nearby hill towns and the charm of its people.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo. No, it was a 7 km drive away.
Tips or Restaurants:
No everything that you need is provided, our can easily be purchase at the PAM supermarket in Certaldo. The fun is to discover you own new best restaurant find!
Directions:
The directions are what they are. Everyone must adapt to getting around in their own way. Yes, you definitely need GPS.
Check In Out:
Everything was as promised.

Mariette, June

Overall:
La Solaia is a beautiful villa set on a hill with an excellent view of the countryside. While the building is considerably old, the interior has been completely redone by the owner's husband who is an architect. The bedrooms are very comfortable, spacious, and nicely furnished. The kitchen and bathrooms have modern fixtures that add comfort and convenience. The large pool is shared with the owner. If you like a rural setting, this villa is perfect.
Enjoyed Most:
Having two of the three bedrooms with en-suites makes sharing this villa with another adult couple easy.
Enjoyed Least:
The surrounding roads are very steep and narrow. Renting a small car (which we did not) is a requirement.
Surrounding Area:
The views all around the area are picture postcard like.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
As before, rent a small car. The best restaurant is Maroni, which is pasta only. Another good choice is Casalinga, a small family-run restaurant.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth, the owner was very gracious. Check in and check out were very easy.

Roy, May

Overall:
The villa equivalent of the Four Seasons.
Enjoyed Most:
Superbly designed and decorated villa.
Surrounding Area:
Easy access to the Chianti Hills.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano- within walking distance - but no shopping. Closest shopping is Certaldo - not walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
A great lunch is the restaurant at Badia Passignano (on the road to Greve).

Robert , May

Overall:
The house was fairly new and showed quality craftsmanship. The kitchen was well-equipped and it was beautifully furnished. Our host was fantastic and provided so many personal touches.
Enjoyed Most:
The three ensuite bedrooms.
Surrounding Area:
The rural beauty of the Tuscany countryside.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo. No. A car was a must.
Directions:
Don't try to find it at night. We used a GPS but even so it was difficult to find.
Check In Out:
Everything went very smoothly. Elizabeth invited us into her home and gave us a tour. She was lovely and her husband, an Austrian count, was very gracious and gave us a history of his family.

Lynda, May

Overall:
We had a wonderful time and found the location to be perfect for day trips.
Enjoyed Most:
I liked the quality of restoration and the furnishings.
Enjoyed Least:
I felt the cleaning person, who was supposed to come in daily, did not do her/his best for the amount of money we paid for this service.
Surrounding Area:
I enjoyed awaking up early and looking out the bedroom window and seeing the ground fog constantly changing.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town, Certaldo, was not in walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Future renters should reach out to eat in local restaurants in small villages, rather than cities. Go to the PAM store for all your groceries and wine.
Directions:
We used a GPS, but just driving a rental car from the airport in another country was a stressful event. I believe we finally used landmarks like gas stations and tree farms to get to the villa. Thankfully, our driver loved to drive and showed no stress.
Check In Out:
Check in and check out was perfect.

Thomas, May

Overall:
We had a wonderful time and Elizabeth was a gracious hostess and landlord. We received a lot of good suggestions from her and she was always available to help if needed. Overall we enjoyed our stay in the villa and would recommend it to others and will look it up next time we plan a Tuscany trip.
Enjoyed Most:
It was extremely peaceful and quiet, distance to the surrounding cities was very reasonable. View was very nice.
Enjoyed Least:
Just the initial arrival instructions were confusing and caused us to be delayed by over 2 hours. Nothing else!
Surrounding Area:
We were very close to many cities and the trip to them was fairly manageable. The views from pretty much anywhere were breathtaking. Proximity to Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, and Pisa made day trips very pleasant and allowed us to enjoy the towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Yes, the nearest town was not more than a few miles away and we were 5 miles away from a good supermarket and thankfully they were open on Sunday !!!
Tips or Restaurants:
We did go to a pizza place nearby--very friendly and awesome pizza. Most of our dining was out in Siena, Florence, and Pisa. Friday and Saturday this pizza place is packed and requires reservations; all the locals are there.
Check In Out:
As stated in the description, security deposit is in cash and the cleaning fee is deducted from this. There was a daily 1.5 hour cleaning at no charge, which was great.

Ladan, March

Surrounding Area:
We were close enough to many of the towns we wanted to visit, especially Florence.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano was the nearest small town. It was about a mile away-walking distance, but the roads are very narrow, and dark at night, so we never walked to the town.
Tips or Restaurants:
No suggestions at this time.
Directions:
The directions were confusing, but Elizabeth met us in Certaldo and we followed her to the villa.
Check In Out:
It was easy and Elizabeth was very gracious both times.

Denise, March

Overall:
We had a most wonderful time. The owner, Elizabeth, is so helpful, we just loved her.
Enjoyed Most:
We liked everything. It's just not possible to find any fault.
Surrounding Area:
So peaceful and beautiful.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo, too far for us to walk, but a short distance by car. We had a lot of fun in Certaldo, went up on the tram three different days. Our first day, which was a Sunday, we went into Certaldo where they had a street market, bought hats, and delicious food. Second day we took the tram up to the top to go to a cooking school, held by Guiseppina. Rather pricey, but fun. Third time we went to a local grocery where the owner prepares food for pick up. We bought the cheese and also the spinach lasagna, very good.
Tips or Restaurants:
Our villa was quite well equipped. The only thing I wished I had brought was a set of measuring cups and spoons.
Directions:
My recommendation would be to be sure to have a GPS, not only helpful in finding the property, but when you make daily trips to surrounding cities you will definitely need one. We rented one at the car rental agency, expensive, but really helped us find our way.
Check In Out:
None, everything went perfect. Elizabeth was right there to welcome us, take us through the Villa, explain the appliances, etc. She is such a wonderful host.

Grace, October

Overall:
Extremely wonderful. Enjoyed every minute there.

Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a GPS and a phone or MiFi to use around Italy. Elizabeth has great recommendations for restaurants.
Directions:
Yes, we did use a GPS. We would have never found property without it. Very grateful to Elizabeth and her husband for waiting up for us.
Check In Out:

Excellent.
Enjoyed Most:
It felt like home, quiet and beautiful. Countryside was gorgeous!
Surrounding Area:
Quiet, peaceful, open space, spectacular views.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Nearest town was Certaldo, and not within walking distance. About 2 miles.
Tips or Restaurants:
Do not need to bring hair dryer. Property owner had some suggestions on restaurants which we visited and were very good!
Directions:
We had a GPS. That was absolutely a lifesaver. We downloaded the Europe maps and found the location. We arrived at the property around 10 PM, pitch dark no light but our GPS got us there. We do not go on vacation without it!
Check In Out:
Our plane was delayed. We called the owner multiple times to advise her, but were unable to make contact. We had to knock on doors to find the owner to open the villa. We were so tired! Finally, we were let in and the rest of the trip was great.

Theresa, October

Overall:
My overall comments about the property are that it is beautiful and a wonderful place to stay. Enjoyed Least:
Checking in; we arrived late and it was raining. We had a difficult time reaching the owner.
Surrounding Area:
Scenery and local restaurants.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo
Directions:
Used GPS. We arrived after dark and it was rainy, so a little more difficult to find as a result.

Maria, October

Overall:
Our overall stay went very well and the accomodations were up to our standards.
Enjoyed Most:
It was ready when we arrived and everything either met or exceeded our expectations.

Surrounding Area:
Easy access to the surrounding towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo; it was not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Other than one's personal items, we found almost everything we needed at the local supermarket. It really didn't matter where we ate--they were all terrific. Reservations required in most. An absolute must is having the personal chef for a dinner or 2. That was really the best part of all of our dining.
Directions:
Italy is very confusing and even though we had written directions we would not have been able to find the villa easily without the help of our GPS.

Edward, September

Certaldo was the nearest town and it was really not within walking distance. The owner of our villa was so accommodating and dropped us off at the train station in town so we could go wherever we wanted. Whenever we wanted to go in a car, our owner recommended a driver to take us.
Tips or Restaurants:
Our last evening we spent in Certaldo Alto in the medieval village. We took the cable car up to the top to browse in the shops and then we had dinner at a restaurant, which was wonderful.
Directions:
