Customer Reviews

Overall:
A very charming apartment in a teriffic location.
Enjoyed Most:
The view and closeness to the village.
Surrounding Area:
The lazy days on island of Palmaria, only a short boat ride away.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Portovenere is only 5 minutes away.
Directions:
We used GPS.

Stefan, July

Overall:
We absolutely LOVED the area, Portovenere, the view, the easy access to stores, the ferries, and many businesses including restaurants.
Enjoyed Most:
The balcony view.
Enjoyed Least:
Actually, there were several smaller things, not just one thing. There were lights burned out, there was a leaky faucet in the kitchen, there was an outlet that was way too lose in the bathroom and the coffee makers were faulty.
Surrounding Area:
The town was what made our stay worth all the little troubles with the property... It had no McDonald's and other chain stores and we LOVED that! The beauty was almost overwhelming...
Nearby Events or Locales:
Portovenere. Yes, it was very much within walking distance though quite steep coming back to the apt.
Tips or Restaurants:
The BEST restaurants we found were "Sapori de Mare" and "Tre Torri" but almost every one of the many restaurants we went to were great!
Directions:
The people who live in and around the property were very helpful with directions and we did not have or use or worry about a GPS!! It was a great area to visit!
Check In Out:
No, check-in was OK and at check-out we got a cab for La Spezia through the property owner.

Linda, April

Overall:
We loved this place, and would recommend it to anyone. The view, when you first see it, takes your breath away. Portovenere is a charming town even in the rain, the Cinque Terre towns are easily accessible by boat, and our hostess, Sarah, was helpful in every way.
Enjoyed Most:
It has to be the view. You can dream the day away just watching the different yachts, ferries, water-taxis, fishing boats, sailboats, and, in the distance, freighters and navy vessels. Behind them a rugged island and mountains, and under them the turquoise-blue Mediterranean, sparkling in the sunlight, which also streams into the apartment. We had our own personal dove, which walked up and down the railing and took offerings of food.
Enjoyed Least:
In mid-October it was a bit cool at night -- but dress warmly and there is not a problem (the days were warm enough that we went swimming on our last one, Oct. 16). It is a steep climb up the road to the building and then there are the steps up to the apartment, so you have to be moderately fit (I am 70, and enjoyed the climb -- in stages). That's how you get the view. The kitchen is small, what we call a 'one-bum kitchen,' but it has everything you need.
Surrounding Area:
We really liked Portovenere, and would recommend staying there instead of in the Cinque Terre because it is less crowded. There are many restaurants to choose from, a colourful harbour, a lovely, twisty old main street one level up from the harbour, a small church out on the point that is straight out of a Gothic novel, seeming to grow right out of the rock, and a fortress overlooking it all. Lots of swimming places too. There is also a strong association in the area with the English poets Byron and Shelley -- hence the name of the apartment -- which pleased me as one of their fans..
Nearby Events or Locales:
The apartment is right on the edge of the older part of Portovenere, and everything was within easy walking distance, including the restaurants, a grocery store, the post office, the tourist bureau, and a market on Monday.
Tips or Restaurants:
We never did find a good map of the town, not even in the tourist bureau. There is no telephone in the apartment -- not something we missed, but others might want to bring their own.
Directions:
The directions are fine. But we didn't need them. We arrived by train at La Spezia, and would have taken the bus, but Sarah kindly met us and drove us to Portovenere, and gave us a tour of the town as well before delivering us to the apartment. On the day we left, she picked us up and drove us back to La Spezia.
Check In Out:
There was an apricot pie waiting for us when we arrived, made by the cleaning woman.

Terry, October

Overall:
We absolutely loved the location. It was very close to many sites for day trips. The food in Portovenere was out of this world.
Enjoyed Most:
The view of the bay from the balcony was fantastic.
Enjoyed Least:
The hot water heater was not working when we got there on Saturday night around 9 PM. Apparently the boiler went out. They couldn't get anyone to fix it until Monday. By Tuesday afternoon we had hot water. The owner wasn't there but her property manager was very prompt at returning calls and resolving the problem.
Surrounding Area:
The town was fantastic to just relax, people watch, and of course sample the best food in the world. Lots of places to experience for day trips and also daily walks. It had close proximity to Cinque Terre and Tuscan villages.
Nearby Events or Locales:
La Grazie was close but we usually walked all around town then took off daily for an adventure about 30 minutes away by car.
Tips or Restaurants:
All the resturants on the shoreline at Portovenere were fabulous. A person must try all gelato shops, just to compare! We also enjoyed getting food for the villa at the local shops to have on the balcony in the mornings and after a long day of sightseeing.
Directions:
Highly recommend getting a GPS for all the traveling as the street signs are not that clearly marked. We followed our GPS completely and didn't have any problems. We didn't take the train to any other towns because we had the car but many other folks we visited with did and had good experiences with that form of transportation.

Julie, September

Overall:
Overall very good. Everything as described.
Enjoyed Most:
The view and the very nice furnishings.
Enjoyed Least:
Air conditioning did not reach master bedroom so we had to sleep in the second bedroom which had twin beds. The A/C did reach this bedroom so we were able to sleep comfortably. It was extremely hot during our stay so this was understandable. Editor's Note: There is one AC unit that is usually sufficient to cook the whole apartment.
Surrounding Area:
Beautiful local people. Relatively inexpensive compared to the rest of Italy. Wonderful swimming in the beautiful sea every day.
Directions:
The taxi was expensive. Editor's Note: The taxi from La Spezia train station is about 30 Euros.

David, September

Overall:
We loved every aspect of our visit. Our accommodation was ideal. The only thing you have to be prepared for are many stairs/steps to climb. However, once climbed, you will never regret the spectacular view afforded from balcony, living room bedroom windows. Old Italian atmosphere is exceptional in this beautiful town of Portovenere. We were totally happy to just be there, each day walking along its ancients streets, in and out of the shops, restaurants, and ruins. A grocery was at the foot of the hill providing just what we needed. The food was good. The service relaxed and excellent in each place we visited. Our generous and charming host, Sarah, met us conveniently on our first day, leading our rented car to our destination. We did not contact her again until our day of departure when she once again sent us on our way very efficiently. Bravo, Sarah!
Enjoyed Most:
The location, convenience, and authentic beauty.
Enjoyed Least:
Can't think of a thing. We are healthier due to the walks.
Surrounding Area:
This ancient village is rich with history and atmosphere. The surrounding Bay is lovely. We loved the Cinque Terre boat tour and the "Lovers Walk" between villages. Be sure to take or purchase a padlock to represent leaving your love and heart in the Cinque Terre.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The five Cinque Terre were easily accessed by boat or hiking to Riomaggiore. The athletic types would definitely hike.
Tips or Restaurants:
Our objective was to eat at different restaurants each time and all were enjoyable. Buy pesto, their hard bread, and white wine of the area for a maximum taste of the Cinque Terre. Bring good walking shoes, as well as enthusiasm and energy for hiking and boating. All ages can enjoy just "being" or being active. It is lovely. Layered clothing is most desirable depending upon the season of the year.
Directions:
We rented a car at EuroCar where they gave us maps/good directions to begin. Sarah, our host, met us in the nearby large community of La Spezia and escorted us to I Poeti. All was most helpful. Study the Italian/International road sign before arrival and you will be ahead of the game. Also, be sure to get appropriate amount of Euros upon arrival to avoid unecessary exhange problems.

Rossanna, April

Overall:
We had a wonderful time in Portovenere and I Poeti is an excellent dwelling to rent.
Enjoyed Most:
The magnificent views from the terrace and bedroom are unsurpassed. The kitchen is well equipped. The apartment is well kept and comfortable. It was also nice to have a dishwasher and washing machine. There is also a parking spot for your car.
Enjoyed Least:
The shower has very little pressure. We had to keep the sink hot water on when we showered so that the shower wouldn't go cold. The walk up to the property is fairly strenuous, especially in hot weather. Editor's Note: The owner replaced the faucets and showerhead, and the water pressure is now much better. Feb 2012.
Surrounding Area:
The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful with agreeable neighbors.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The heart of Portovenere is a 5 minute walk.
Tips or Restaurants:
All of the restaurants served quality food, and though the Ligurian coast is known for its seafood, it doesn't measure up to New England or California coastal cuisine. The pesto dishes were the best I've ever tasted.
Directions:
Italians don't do street signage very well, so you must be prepared to drive by instinct much of the time. Be prepared to be frustrated. We had a GPS but it was as confused as we were a lot of the time, and much of the time it had difficulty finding a satellite.
Check In Out:
The owner, Sarah Ferrari, had her friend Roberta check us in and out, and both speak excellent English. Roberta showed us how to work the dishwasher and washing machine and stove. They answered all the questions we had and were available by phone.

marc , September

Overall:
Lovely apartment and Sarah, the owner, was very helpful in showing us around the apartment and the area.
Enjoyed Most:
Excellent view and super location very near the water and wonderful restaurants. Supermarket very near the apartment and great kitchen for simple meals. Very relaxing.
Enjoyed Least:
The shower was not working in optimal condition. Low water pressure and often not much hot water. Editor's Note: The owner replaced the faucets and showerhead, and the water pressure is now much better. Feb 2012.
Surrounding Area:
We had beautiful weather and took the ferry to Cinque Terre several times. Being on and near the water most of the day was terrific. Also loved the al fresco eating that Italians do so well. Terrific food.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The apartment is right in Porto Venere so it's easy to walk to the harbor and many great restaurants.
Directions:
Easy for us because Sarah picked us up at the train station-- super nice of her to do that.
Check In Out:
Lovely of Sarah to show us everything and help out when we had questions about internet service, etc.

Laura, August

Enjoyed Most:
The balcony with the view of the water was fantastic!
Enjoyed Least:
The lack of any "adult" management contact while we were there. Editor's Note: The owner was out of the country for a short time but has returned - July 2011.
Surrounding Area:
Being able to just walk a few blocks to the historic area of town and window shop, walk, sunbathe, etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Portovenere is where the apartment is located. It was within walking distance. The historic center is about a 10 minute walk, boat dock a bit less, and then the actual "city" where most residents reside is a bit farther of a walk.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring toilet paper, and your own bar of soap. Bring a clothesline if you intend on washing in the washing machine. They provide a rack but our clothes fell off.

Joy, July

Overall:
The view from the balcony was just like the picture showed. We did not connect with Sarah since we had phone problems and she left for the U.S. during our stay.
Enjoyed Most:
Location/view of the Mediterrean.
Enjoyed Least:
The walk up the hill.
Surrounding Area:
The train, the boat, the walks, the Cinque Terre.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Portevenere; we walked there everyday.
Tips or Restaurants:
Connect with Sarah early in the day. We had phone problems
Directions:
Without our GPS, we would not have found it.
Check In Out:
Mr. Bandini had the key. That was fine. When we left, we returned it to Mr. Bandini's girlfriend. That was fine also. We really had no contact with Sarah after the first phone call which we had to make from the Hotel Paradiso.

Jean, June

Overall:
The apartment was lovely and the view was spectacular. The town of Portovenere was quaint and beautiful. We had a fantastic week at I Poeti!
Enjoyed Most:
The apartment had incredible views of the sea and the mountains! We spent every evening on the balcony having cocktails and watching the sunset. Every morning, we were on the balcony as well. It was tastefully decorated and had everything we needed for self catering. There were shops which supplied all of our needs just steps away down the hill. The owner, Sarah, was very kind and accommodating. We loved staying at I Poeti!
Enjoyed Least:
There was nothing to complain about.
Surrounding Area:
We loved the town of Portovenere--an interesting town where the scenery is amazing. We enjoyed being close to Cinque Terre, Pisa, Forence, and Portofino.
Nearby Events or Locales:
There were adjacent towns by road. One of the Cinque Terre villages, Riomaggiore, is a rigorous 4-5 hour walk from Portovenere. La Spezia is a 20 minute bus ride from Portoverere and a 3 minute train ride from Riomaggiore.
Tips or Restaurants:
No, unless, you want to bring a salad spinner for drying lettuce. The owner, Sarah, provides many recommendations for restaurants in the surrounding area.
Directions:
Did not use a GPS. Just followed Sarah's directions from La Spezia.
Check In Out:
No

Walter, May

Overall:
Delightful-Relaxing-Picturesque-Amazing.
Enjoyed Most:
The views from the terrace, living room and master bedroom were of the beautiful bay. The apartment was spotless, even more so than some luxury hotels where we have stayed. The garage parking was extremely nice. Sarah, the owner of the property, was extremely helpful and it was great having an American contact while we were there.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing!
Surrounding Area:
The short walk to town, accessibility of restaurants and shops and the proximity to the Cinque Terre.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The town of Portovenere was a few steps away.
Tips or Restaurants:
This property is extremely well equipped and within a very short walking distance to a supermarket, restaurants, shops and the best gelato we had in Italy Bar Lamia. The town of Portovenere was charming and wonderful.
Directions:
We rented a GPS which was very helpful throughout our trip and we can't imagine driving around Italy without one.
Check In Out:
Sarah was fantastic and prompt.

Sherri, October

Overall:
Great place and Sarah was very helpful in showing us around and fixing the internet.
Enjoyed Most:
View, of course. The pictures were not wrong. Everyday was a real treat.
Enjoyed Least:
The construction on the hill above us was a little distracting, but understandable.
Surrounding Area:
Closeness to village.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Portovenere was just at the bottom of the hill.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring your DVD's because only BBC news on satellite. All restaurants in Portovenere were great. We ate at all of them over the 30 days of our stay. All restaurants in Italy were outstanding.

David, February

Overall:
We had a wonderful time. October is beautiful with fewer people. Portovenere is a real town with groceries, restaurants, parks and beaches
Enjoyed Most:
The view across the harbor to islands, fishing boats and ocean shipping headed to La Spezia was fabulous.
Enjoyed Least:
The apartment furnishings were a bit tired. Editor's Note: Most of the furnishings have been replaced since this review. October 2012.
Surrounding Area:
We loved Portovenere, itself. Cinque Terre and Lerici are easily accessible by ferry. We found Cinque Terre crowded and a bit like Disneyland. Portovenere is a destination by itself - a place to relax, enjoy the very nice locals and beautiful scenery.
Tips or Restaurants:
The restaurant on the island across the harbor has decent food and a view of Portovenere that makes it memorable. It is worth the ferry ride to Monterossa to eat at Ciak seafood ravioli. The fish soup at La Chiglia was wonderful, as is pesto anywhere.
Directions:
We used a GPS and the owner picked us up at an easy to find place as we entered town.
Check In Out:
I must tell you that the owner, is a gem. Very experienced and helpful, easily available by cell.

Laurence, October

Overall:
A beautiful location no matter what the weather might be. Cosy apartment with a homey feel.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, location, location and the local agent.
Enjoyed Least:
The bathroom. The furnishings could be updated.
Surrounding Area:
PortoVenere is a jewel in the crown of the Le Cinque Terre area that appears to get little coverage but is so pretty, convenient to everything and user-friendly.
Tips or Restaurants:
The local agent has the Restaurant hot spots down pat...the apartment is generally well equipped and with the addition of wine glasses provided by her little else is needed that cannot be sourced from PortoVenere.
Directions:
Phone contact with the local agent was so easy and she accompanied us to the property.
Check In Out:
Very painless and most hospitable.

Terry, April

Enjoyed Most:
Great location, Parking for the car.
Enjoyed Least:
Needed some updating furniture and kitchen utensils. More satellite channels would be great, too.
Surrounding Area:
Absolutely great to walk to the village and pick up the ferry to the Cinque Terre. Great Restaurants close by. Beautiful village.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Portovenere - great place, wonderful starting point to the Cinque Terre.
Tips or Restaurants:
Fantastic local products, loved the Focaccia bread and Pesto
Check In Out:
The owner met us; she actually picked us up from a central point so we did not miss the street. Very, very nice lady who knows the area and gave us great suggestions for restaurants and the areas.

Rita, October

Overall:
It was so much better than a hotel, especially if you have children. Having separate rooms and a kitchen makes life so much easier. The owner was able to provide amenities to American expectations, while keeping it Italian.
Enjoyed Most:
Location and amenities. Views were spectacular.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing.
Surrounding Area:
The views and ability to see so many different things.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring your appetite, walking shoes, camera and a great attitude.
Directions:
We were picked up by taxi at Genoa, a recommendation from the owner, which was the best thing we could have done. It was not stressful vs. getting on train, then taxi after a long flight into Italy.

Mia, April

Enjoyed Most:
Position. It was 5 minute walk into Portovenere.
Enjoyed Least:
Up a fairly steep driveway.
Surrounding Area:
The town and the harbour are fantastic and it is so easy to walk and catch ferries.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Portovenere just down the hill.
Directions:
Catch a Taxi from La Spezia. Costs 35 Euros. You won't need a car

Ian, July

Enjoyed Most:
We loved the view and the convenience of being right next to town. we loved the beach, the town was wonderful and the people were very welcoming. The neighbors was great. We loved the owner...she was a welcoming face!
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing really
Surrounding Area:
This area is not as touristy as the Cinque Terre, so the people spoke Italian instead of English to us, which we enjoyed.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Le Grazie it was not within walking distance. and then there was La Spezia....great shopping.
Tips or Restaurants:
We loved the restaurant called La Marina de Antonio. I would say that the apartment has everything you could possibly need.
Directions:
We were picked up and so that was slick. The owner also came back at the end of our week and took us to the car rental place.

Serena, October

Enjoyed Most:
The balcony view of the water was amazing and you could also enjoy it from the living room. The amenities provided met and exceeded all our needs. The location was great. The property was very clean and well maintained. It was very charmingly decorated. We were very thankful for the garage.
Enjoyed Least:
It was a tough walk up the hill from town. It was also difficult to get in and out of the garage.
Surrounding Area:
We loved the Cinque Terre, the boat rides, Lucca, Lerici, Parma and going to the market at Forte dei Marmi.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The apartment was in the lovely town of Portovenere. We just walked down the driveway and were in town.
Tips or Restaurants:
Everything that we needed was in the apartment. There was a book with things to see and do, restaurants and history of the cities nearby. It was very helpful to us. The restaurants that we enjoyed were Trattoria Da Iseo, Trattoria La Marina da Antonnia, Ristorante Le Bocche and Trattoria La Chiglia in Portovenere. Bucca S. Antonio in Lucca had excellent food. We had the best gelato at Bar Lamia in Portovenere.
Check In Out:
The property manager, Sarah, was very friendly and helpful. We really liked her a lot.

Bill, May

Overall:
Even in November the weather proved to be great. Still a good time for sightseeing and hiking along the Cinque Terre, without any crowds!!
Enjoyed Most:
The view was fabulous: the morning sunrise over the mountains - to the lights of the sailboats moored at night
Surrounding Area:
The convenience of the location of the grocery store, newsstand, bus line, and local restaurants made it an ideal location.
Tips or Restaurants:
La Mia's for the gelato, and Tre Torri Trattoria for their pesto.
Directions:
Sarah was great, and picked us up!!. The bus takes you right to the front door, too.

Chris, November

Overall:
It was a great place to stay and head out from. We went to Rome, Florence and even Venice - by taking the bus to La Spezia and then trains. The washer is small - but it was really very nice to have a washing machine available.
Enjoyed Most:
The beautiful view of the bay - from the terrace balcony.
Enjoyed Least:
The hard climb up the driveway and stairs to the apartment.
Surrounding Area:
Everything! - Portovenere became our favorite place in the Cinque Terre. The people are wonderful, food is great and we enjoyed swimming in the Med. Lots to see, the Church and Castle, the islands and easy access to boats and buses.
Nearby Events or Locales:
I suggest taking the very convenient boats to the Cinque Terre towns and Lerici.
Tips or Restaurants:
The apartment is well equipped - but a strong clothes line is good to bring. La Medusa was the best - good prices and great food.
Directions:
We were lucky to have the owner pick us up at the train station in La Spezia - but the directions were excellent and we could have taken a cab or the bus.

Linda , October

Overall:
Sarah was English-speaking and very interested in making our stay pleasant. She is very helpful and has made her property a wonderful place.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything. The owner had made sure all the conveniences were there with anything you needed. The view is magnificent--you could be very happy on the patio overlooking the water. It was convenient to absolutely everything in town, the transportation, the restaurants, the castle, the town itself.
Enjoyed Least:
Really nothing. There is a hill you must walk up to the property, but the view is the result.
Surrounding Area:
We loved taking a boat to the Cinque Terre and walking the towns. They are so beautiful and quaint. Also, the people are very kind in all the shops and the special little shops offer wonderful treats.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Portovenere is beautiful and wonderful to explore. The beaches are good for swimming and the restaurants are wonderful.
Tips or Restaurants:
Not really. Sarah provides it all. Make sure to go to the Pesto Lady's shop in town. She's been making it for over 35 years and it's great!. It's called Bajeico. Also, the best gelato in the world is at Bar Lamia. Good restaurants: La Medusa, Antonio's Mare, and Le Bocche. Sarah provides names and best places in her book that she leaves at the property.

Antoinette, June

Overall:
Portovenere is a great place to visit and stay.
Enjoyed Most:
Great location. It's just off the main stretch, but a quick walk down for groceries, restaurants, and reaching the central part of town. High enough for good views but without being remote either.
Enjoyed Least:
This unit is a lot like a beach apartment with plain furnishings and little character.
Surrounding Area:
Lerici and towns like Tellaro were great. They get overlooked a lot by American tourists in particular, due to the proximity of the Cinque Terre. However, I found them just as interesting and without the heavy throngs of like-minded American tourists and backpackers. And the people in places like Tellaro were the friendliest of anywhere we've been.
Tips or Restaurants:
The nearby Royal Sporting Hotel has a high-end restaurant, Not for kids, but not terribly priced, called Ristorante Golfo dei Poeti. Amazing service, excellent food, and at a worthy price. We left notes in the apartment journal on this place. When we went, the temperature was unseasonably cool. And with the cool floors, you may want to pack a sweatshirt and slippers in cooler months. The best pesto in town is not at a restaurant but at the deli counter of the local Conad supermarket down the street. Also, most places do not sell public phone cards -- so if you need one, get one before you get to town for the two phones in the main piazza.
