Customer Reviews

Overall:
It was a beautiful place even in a huge snow storm.
Enjoyed Most:
It was a comfortable place to stay for a week with the family.
Enjoyed Least:
Needed more kitchen amenities. But overall very good. We entered in the midst of a huge snow storm which no one was prepared for. It would have been nice to have walk ways shoveled etc...we are from Upstate NY and are used to the snow. It wasn't a big bother to us.
Surrounding Area:
The view, the wonderful restaurant next door was amazing! Close to Taormina.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Not really walking distance but doable in nice weather.
Tips or Restaurants:
Definitely go to the restaurant next door.
Directions:
GPS.
Check In Out:
All was fine. Owners were very nice and were prompt.

Samuel, January

Overall:
We had a lovely experience at the villa. Philip and Carmelo are wonderful! They couldn't do enough for us and we hope to see them again in the future. They take pride in their villa.
Enjoyed Most:
It was very peaceful and quiet. The grounds are lovely, the the pool was perfect, and of course--there's Philip and Carmelo. The place is beautiful!
Enjoyed Least:
My kids might say that they didn't like the lack of a TV or the fact that they couldn't walk to town. Overall, though, a great experience.
Surrounding Area:
The natural beauty. Experiencing the countryside. Also, the villa is close to Taormina and is very convenient to all the major roads.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Graniti and Gaggi are the closest small towns (1 km), but for us were not in walking distance to the villa. But still, very close to everything you need. I loved the charm of the old town. Maybe for some people, who run daily, getting there on foot wouldn't be a problem.
Tips or Restaurants:
The restaurant right next door to the villa was delicious. Giuseppe the owner was very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. One night we stopped by his restaurant late after a full day of sightseeing. He was ready to close for the evening but he didn't hesitate to prepare a lovely dish of pasta for us to bring back to our villa to enjoy. The villa had toilet paper and soap enough to start our vacation. The kitchen is stocked with all the essential utensils. Plus the town has a grocery store for things you may need to buy for the villa. It would be in the renter's best interest to rent a car to visit the sites in the area.
Directions:
We had a driver take us to and from the airport. We rented a car in Taormina; didn't seem to have any issues with driving and yes we did use GPS. My son felt that Google maps was more accurate to use for this area.
Check In Out:
The check in/out process was simple. Philip and Carmelo, like I said, are wonderful.

Maria, July

Overall:
Great - very helpful hosts. Not intrusive. Beautiful location. Great food, wines and sightseeing.
Enjoyed Most:
The pool. It's an oasis.
Enjoyed Least:
No real problems.
Surrounding Area:
Restaurants. Great scenery. Ocean swimming.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gaggi- not really walkable. Especially in Sicily in August. It was hot!
Tips or Restaurants:
Right next door was a simple family-run restaurant. We went twice. I wish I could go now. Owners really supply everything you need.
Directions:
Very easy - no GPS required.
Check In Out:
No hassles whatever.

John , August

Overall:
Excellent landlords - gracious, friendly and helpful to a fault.
Enjoyed Most:
Its artistic beauty and grace.
Enjoyed Least:
Road noise. Editor's Note: The road has recently been widened and resurfaced, resulting in less traffic noise. May 2013.
Surrounding Area:
Everything.

Vern , August

Enjoyed Most:
The pool area.
Enjoyed Least:
The road.
Surrounding Area:
Visiting Taormina, the beach.
Tips or Restaurants:
Buy some basic supplies before you arrive - including salt, pepper and olive oil.

Katy, August

Overall:
I would definitely recommend this property - one of the best we have stayed in and we certainly will be returning sometime.
Enjoyed Most:
The owners were very helpful and welcoming, and take a huge amount of pride in their property. The pool was great, especially for the kids. The villa was nicely fitted out and full of character.
Enjoyed Least:
No complaints at all really. The villa is not that big but the large outside space more than makes up for that. Neither bathroom has a tub which can be a problem with small kids who are not used to showering.
Surrounding Area:
A great combination of quiet unspoilt areas and bustling tourist centres like Taormina. The beaches were great although crowded. We definitely will visit Sicily again, as it now probably ranks as our favourite European location.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gaggi - walkable although I wouldn't risk it with the narrow roads. It meets your basic shopping needs and has a good supermarket with great deli.
Tips or Restaurants:
Don't try to park in Taormina - park at the Cable car stop at the bottom of the mountain and get the cable car up. There is also a good beach there. The restaurant next door is really good - make sure you are really hungry before going though!

Mark, July

Overall:
Beautiful property with a great pool, view, terraces, comfortable beds, good kitchen. The owners want very much to make people at home.
Enjoyed Most:
Location to most of the highlights of Sicily.
Enjoyed Least:
Everything was lovely.
Surrounding Area:
This villa is close enough to the beaches, Taormina, Siracusa and the small towns along the coast so day trips were very easy. The east coast of Sicily is filled with great day trips. You can go as far as Noto and still be home for dinner at 8:00pm. I stayed three weeks and it would have been good to stay one week on the west coast, but quite frankly, I am glad I didn't have to pack and move. The west coast will be my next trip when I visit Sicily again.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gaggi and Trepattello are the nearest towns. No, you could not walk to them easily. There was a small road and very narrow, so cars were too close to walk comfortably.
Tips or Restaurants:
Be sure to see Mt. Etna but have the owners arrange for a jeep to take you rather than go by bus. The off-road experience is wonderful. Restaurants: 1. The little restaurant next door to the villa 2. The little enoteca in Castlleon 3. La Cambusa in Giardini Naxos 4. Osteria Nero D'Avola in Taormina. Make sure you buy European hairdryer, not an American one with an adapter. It won't work as well.

Joyce, June

Overall:
The property is beautiful . The owners were extremely helpful in suggesting places to go and providing directions . The surrounding towns are fun to explore and I highly recommend the Mt. Etna jeep trip.
Enjoyed Most:
I loved the grounds of the villa and wish I had more time to enjoy them. We are very busy sightseeing.
Enjoyed Least:
I did not have any problems with the villa.
Surrounding Area:
All the sights were within a reasonable driving distance to the villa. We especially enjoyed our jeep tour of Mt. Etna which the owners of the villa arranged.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town was Gaggi. It was walking distance, however the road is narrow and would not be safe walking with the traffic. You definitely need a car to get around.
Tips or Restaurants:
I would suggest bringing soap, shampoo, etc. Only a small bar of soap is supplied. We enjoyed the Cafe Nuovo in Gaggi. We also loved the Ristorante Masseria in Gioradinni. We ate there a few times and the owner was very friendly every time and the food was consistently good.
Check In Out:
We came in very late and the owners were wonderful , even though we felt badly.

Susan , April

Enjoyed Most:
The owners who clearly take pride in the villa. They went out of their way to accommodate our requests and make useful suggestions about our itinerary. The property was filled with beautiful works of art.
Enjoyed Least:
It was a little smaller than we expected.
Surrounding Area:
Taormina is a lovely town. We enjoyed exploring the towns around Mt Etna and the coast. The food was the highlight of the trip.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gaggi is a full-service town with basic markets, bank, pharmacy. It met our needs but lacks any charm or decent restaurants. There is, however, a wonderful restaurant adjacent to the villa, A Cassita, which is worth several visits!
Tips or Restaurants:
A Cassita is wonderful for dining. Taormina is best for shopping and exploring a charming, historic town. The small beaches near by are best explored off peak season due to crowding. Be prepared to spend a lot of time in the car if you want to see the real historic sights. Plan meals carefully as restaurant opening times are unconventional for Americans.

Dina, October

Enjoyed Most:
The outside area, especially all of the fruit growing on the trees, etc. It was beautiful.
Enjoyed Least:
The air conditioning had trouble keeping up with the unusual record temperatures-- it was about 100 degrees when we were there.
Surrounding Area:
We loved Sicily-- a little gem. Taormina was our favorite by far-- what a great town!
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town was Graniti and Gaggi. You could walk but you wouldn't want to, especially with the small narrow roads, and zooming cars.
Tips or Restaurants:
We grilled and cooked at the villa a lot, which we loved. Taormina is a wonderful town- our favorite- but it is very difficult to park there, especially during the summer. The same is true of parking near the beach in Giardini Naxos. Be sure to ask the owners for advice about both.

Andrea, August

Overall:
Don't hesitate to stay here. It's worth it!
Enjoyed Most:
It is impossible to name one thing we liked the best. The Internet description and pictures don't begin to capture how wonderful it is to stay here! It truly felt like a home away from home. The villa's decor was done with an extravagant attention to detail and aesthetics that create an unusual combination of comfort and luxury. Our hosts sincerely value their guests comfort and enjoyment. The beds were comfortable, the baths and kitchen totally modernized, the original features were capitalized and enhanced, the terrace is a work of art, the grounds provided absolute privacy and beauty, and pool was fabulous. I can't wait to go back!
Enjoyed Least:
not applicable - it was everything we hoped for and more
Surrounding Area:
You really get the flavor of being in the country. The view from the terrace is of the lush hills of the surrounding country, but you are a short drive from several wonderful villages and 15 minutes from fantastic beaches and many other tourist draws. We really had a hard time leaving the villa though, and when we did, we couldn't wait to get back.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gaggi was the nearest town. I could have walked there in about 15 minutes, but we always drove. There's a fabulous restaurant next door to the villa too.
Tips or Restaurants:
The restaurant next door was great. We ate dinner there 4 times, and it just kept getting better.
Directions:
Crossing the bridge was a bit confusing - there are actually 4 or 5 bridges before you come to the villa - not really a problem though as we didn't get lost or miss it on our first try
Check In Out:
Don't buy wine or champagne before you get there. Check out the selection at the villa. Ours was fully stocked with a good selection at more than reasonable prices.

Jennifer, August

Overall:
It's really fantastic. I feel like I hit the jackpot with this one.
Enjoyed Most:
It's an exquisitely renovated 15th century villa. The owners spared no expense with the renovation, and it's just gorgeous. It's beautiful, very open and very comfortable. The pool and veranda are wonderful. They took great care to integrate modern amenities with original architecture - for example, adding crown moulding below the original vaulted stone ceilings. Really beautiful. Also, the host, Phil, is extremely helpful and friendly. We really enjoyed him.
Enjoyed Least:
The clothes dryer was temperamental. That's all - it's hard to think of anything negative.
Surrounding Area:
It's surrounded by quaint small towns, that lend a lot of local color if you can brave driving the mountain roads. The view from the villa is pretty and peaceful. It's a 20 minute drive from Taormina. And it has a fantastic restaurant right next door.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gaggi, an OK town. No, not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
There's a great restaurant right next door. If you come in the summer, it's hot, so bring a hat and cool clothing. Don't bother with a sweater or warm coat. Bring adapters for electrical appliances.
Check In Out:
They are very friendly and accommodating.

John, July

Overall:
A picture of Villa Due Angeli is now my screen saver. I enjoyed this part of my Italian vacation the most, I think because we felt safe, at home and welcome. Sicily is such a warm and laid back place to visit and this is the perfect place to experience this. The people are helpful and kind.
Enjoyed Most:
I cannot imagine how the villa, originally built in 1490, could have been more perfectly restored. I am a master Craftsman and the attention to detail was superb. I spent lots of time admiring the love and care that has gone into restoring Due Angeli with an obvious intent to make it comfortable for guests. I loved the large outdoor verandas with the grand views of the valley and the breezes coming off the sea. Our hosts were very helpful, giving suggestions when we asked of where to visit, to eat, to shop and providing for any of our needs. I will make this trip to this place again!
Enjoyed Least:
Having to go home! I have no complaints.
Surrounding Area:
We could visit many interesting places close by such as Alcantara Gorge, Taoromina, beaches at Giradini Naxos, Siarcusa, Tindari etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gaggi and Granita. It was walkable but we did not walk there. It was usually a trip to buy groceries so we took a car. The roads are narrow with not much room for pedestrians.
Tips or Restaurants:
There is a restaurant right next to the villa that served one of the grandest meals we had in Sicily. Our dinner began around 8 PM and went until 11. The food was excellent.
Directions:
After exiting the autostrada the turn for Villalfranca comes up immediately after paying the toll on the far right side of the road. The road looks to small to be a turn off but is fine once you enter. The driveway into Due Angeli is steep, so be ready.

Jerry, May

Overall:
Owners were excellent and really made us feel at home.
Enjoyed Most:
The pool and the owners.
Enjoyed Least:
Nearby road.
Surrounding Area:
Great location, good base for visiting Sicily.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gaggi was nearby, but Sicilian streets and roads and not conducive to walking

Glenn, August

Overall:
We loved the place and enjoyed Sicily very much.

Dennis, July

Overall:
The inside of the house is great, almost like a cave, but with great light and rustic beauty. There is nothing like that in North America.
Enjoyed Most:
I loved the large terrace overlooking a valley of lemon trees. I wanted to stay there every day from 4-10pm The breeze on the terrace was the best thing of all. No matter how hot it is outside the terrace is always perfect. The pool is gorgeous, relaxing and the surrounding vegetation beautiful The proprietors were always there when you needed them, always friendly, helpful and funny, and at the same time miraculously never around when you felt like being alone. They were very generous. None of us wanted to leave at the end of the week.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing.
Surrounding Area:
We loved the gorge, the mountain driving, the volcano, the remarkable hill towns
Tips or Restaurants:
We didn't find any great restaurants but that may be because we had a recalcitrant 8 year old in tow. We mostly cooked at home and ate on the terrace, which was relaxing after a day of driving around Sicily looking at amazing things. The only advice I have is to bring a copy of Homers Odyssey with you, or retelling, so that you can marvel at how close you are now to where Odysseus was then. And take the crazy Mount ETNA tour in the land rover, they pick you up at the house, and drive straight up the mountain on back roads, old roads and sheep trails. I won't ruin the surprise for the journey back.

Paolo, July

Overall:
Overall a great experience.
Enjoyed Most:
Great location, scenic and idyllic. Great hosts, warm and hospitable.
Enjoyed Least:
Small bedrooms one of which has no windows.
Surrounding Area:
Easy access to main roads and to Taormina and Etna.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gaggi. Yes, but a good long walk.
Tips or Restaurants:
The restaurant next door is excellent.
Directions:
Directions were clear and easy to follow.

Bob, June

Overall:
Owners were wonderful and a delight. Treated our 2 children very well.
Enjoyed Most:
Close to very good restaurant, and while there are 3 rental units, we were the only guests, so we had privacy.
Enjoyed Least:
Pool under construction and workers were tiling upstairs unit balcony most of the week. Future guests will not have a problem with construction. Property on a rather busy road, on a sharp corner with narrow road so lorries blew horns. Paid 110 Euros for electricity and never used air conditioning.

Jim, June

Overall:
The co-owners, Phillip and Carmello, are a delight to talk to. They put their hearts and souls into restoring this property and they love for people to enjoy it. Be sure to check out the ceramic art store in the lower lever, run by Phillip who is very much an artist. Carmello paints and all of their art is on display and for sale.
Enjoyed Most:
The beautiful quality of the restoration of this old winery. A very comfortable and soothing place to be.
Enjoyed Least:
Cannot think of a thing.
Surrounding Area:
We were close to a lot of things of interest to us Mt. Etna, Taormina, and all the little mountain towns that surround Mt. Etna.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gaggi. It was not really within walking distance but only two minutes away by car.
Tips or Restaurants:
The restaurant down the road 200 feet serves authentic Sicilian food. We enjoyed the personality and enthusiasm of the chef-owner. There is no menu, he just starts sending out one delicious dish after another until you say Stop!
Check In Out:
Phillip and Carmello were there when we arrived and they helped us in every way.

Lonnie, May

Overall:
The Ezekial apartment was a delight. The architecture of the villa and the way the rooms have been integrated into the structure is just charming. I can't say enough about Carmelo and what he has done to make Villa Angeli so special. It felt like a warm embrace the entire week we spent there and I look forward to returning as soon as possible.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything! The villa was beautiful. We started our stay with sprinkles and had five days of rain, the orange trees glistened, the iris heads were heavy with dew every morning, the bells of the sheep across the valley rang through the mist. The place is spectacular and our host ,Carmelo, a charming gentleman I'll never forget
Surrounding Area:
The area is verdant. There were orange and lemon trees growing all about. We were in the shadow of Mt. Etna; the surrounding hills terraced with vines and authentic structures. We were close to the autostrada which gave us access to Catania, Taormina, Messina, Syracusa and so on. It felt like a real slice of Sicilian life.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town was Gaggi. It is not within walking distance, and that was Okay. I enjoyed the fact that the villa was close to everything but a separate and beautiful piece of property for us to retire to after a day of sightseeing.
Tips or Restaurants:
Everything you need is there. The restaurant next door to the villa, A Casita, was very nice and the owner will bring you an authentic Sicilian meal without your having to look at a menu. You just say what you like and he brings it to you - delightful.
