Customer Reviews

Overall:
This historic villa can be seen from miles away, perched on the hillside with all kinds of greenery around it. It is a beautiful place, created and maintained with love and pleasure by its artistic owners.
Enjoyed Most:
The location is hard to beat - close to Giardini Naxos, Taormina, Mt. Etna, and the autostrade. The outside areas are wonderful for morning coffee, reading and relaxing.
Enjoyed Least:
The road noise - but this was really our fault, because we chose the bedroom facing the road. Editor's Note: The road has been recently widened and repaved, resulting in much less traffic noise. May 2013.
Surrounding Area:
There is so much to see and do! Just up the road is a fascinating gorge and a mountain-top ancient town - very, very picturesque. Taormina and Giardini Naxos are close by, and so is Mr. Etna. Further afield, but a comfortable drive away, are Caltagirone (famous for ceramics), Ortigia Island, and Piazza Amerina. A week is too short a time to see everything!
Tips or Restaurants:
All of the restaurants we found were very good. Order seafood! We particularly liked the restaurants in Giardini Naxos and Ortigia. Be sure to try to restaurant right new door - it is great!!

Suzanne, October

Overall:
The villa is lovely and Carmelo is a gracious host. His grounds are beautiful and the pool is very nice. The location is good--not far from Taormina or the highway.
Enjoyed Most:
The grounds were meticulously cared for by the gardener and the owner. It was also next door to one of the better, lesser known, restaurants in that area. The villa is well maintained and has all the amenitites.
Enjoyed Least:
There is a blind curve in front of the villa leading to the intersection and many of the cars honked so that others would know they were coming. Editor's Note: See note above.
Surrounding Area:
The villa is in a quiet area near Graniti. Across the road is a sheep farm and the mountain views were lovely. It was away from the tourist areas but close enough to get there in 15-20 minutes.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gaggi is the nearest small town. It is probably about 2-3 km--walkable but a dangerous road to walk on. We needed a car for Sicily to get to the store and local restaurants as well as other places in Sicily.
Tips or Restaurants:
I don't remember the name of the restaurant next door but it is a very short walk and the food was very good. Usually, we were by ourselves and the owner was an enjoyable fellow. No menus but great food. La Zagara in Gaggi was also pretty good and reasonable.

Overall:
It was lovely to be in a rental property that truly showed the interests and collections of the owners. Often when staying in this type of property one feels that the furnishings are the most basic and in Villa Due Angeli one knew all about the owners and they did not put away any of their favourite objects but instead proudly displayed them.
Enjoyed Most:
The owners made us feel completely at home. The section of the villa we took is more ideally suited for 3 couples as there are only 3 bedrooms.
Enjoyed Least:
Only quibble would be the proximity to the road, but given that it wasn't that heavily trafficked, it really wasn't a problem.
Surrounding Area:
Great day trips to Mount Etna and Taormina.
Tips or Restaurants:
Gaggi has a great café, Buon Café, with wonderful pastries...but be prepared to sit and enjoy the morning as it takes time to prepare a wonderful cafe doppio. We had many wonderful meals at the restaurant next door to the villa and the owner and his family are wonderful and made sure we left heartily satisfied with the meal. Delicious antipasto, wonderful grilled seafood and meats and the ricotta cake became a favourite from the first bite.

Peter, August

Enjoyed Most:
Restaurant very close by; very friendly and helpful owner; great swimming pool.
Enjoyed Least:
The road was sometimes noisy.

Katarzyna, June

Overall:
The property is visually very beautiful both inside and outside. The swimming pool area is very beautiful and relaxing after a day of sightseeing.
Enjoyed Most:
The architectural details give it so much character. The gardens outside are lush and lovely everywhere you look. The owners have created so many little sitting areas to relax and watch the world go by with the mountains in one direction and the sea in the other. It really is a spectacular place!
Enjoyed Least:
The villa is on a road that goes from the town of Graniti to the foothills of Mt. Etna. There is traffic noise from buses, motor bikes and farm equipment.
Surrounding Area:
The surrounding area is very interesting. We hiked into the hills near the property, drove to the many small towns nearby, watched fire works down by the sea from our balcony, walked next door, literally to the best restaurant in the area, and overall had a wonderful time.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town is Gaggi. Due to the busy roadway right outside, we really didn't walk to any towns. However, if you are brave enough, they are close enough to do so.
Tips or Restaurants:
Do have Maria cook a dinner for you at the villa. Have a large appetite. She makes the best pasta ever, and her seafood salad is unbelievable! Pippo is the owner of the restaurant next door, La Cassita, which luckily turned out to be the best. He has no menu. Just tell him what you like. We had dinner there three times. His vino is great and he's adorable!
Check In Out:
The owners were there to greet us upon arrival and show us the villa. They gave us information about the area and whatever else might be needed. They are very charming and pleasant company.

Kathy, May

Enjoyed Most:
Being surrounded by the orange and lemon trees, the large out door terrace, and especially the very helpful, welcoming owners. The villa is located directly on a road and would not be a place you should expect to walk out the door and stroll into town.
Enjoyed Least:
We liked it all. The driveway is a bit steep, but one can work around that.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gaggi, and you would not really want to walk it.
Tips or Restaurants:
Cafe Nuovo in Gaggi is exemplary. The bakery-pastry place you would want in your dreams... the restaurant next door also converted a jaded New York Northern Italian into loving Sicilian food. Fantastic at twice the price.

Fabio, April

Overall:
In general, the villa was very nice and we enjoyed our stay. We enjoyed watching the sheep and goats being herded through the gully in the morning and evening. We were there in early November and although the weather was quite nice, it was a little cool to use the pool. It looked like it would be an excellent place to spend time in the right season. We also didn't spend as much time on the terrace. Although the mornings were fairly nice and it wasn't too bad outside in the sunshine, by afternoon, the terrace was in the shade and it was too cool. The siesta time 1-4pm is taken very seriously in Sicily. Most everything closes down in the afternoon so plan accordingly.
Enjoyed Most:
The villa was beautifully decorated. Every place you looked you would see something you missed before. The bathrooms were quite modern. All the furniture was up to date and comfortable. The villa was very fresh. They do an excellent job providing a book of things to do in the area and recommendations of where to shop in Gaggi. The location is fairly convenient to the autostrada although you do pass through a couple of small towns to get there and a number of interesting locations.
Enjoyed Least:
The villa was located on a blind corner of the road so there was ocassional horn-honking from vehicles as they approached the corner. The vehicle noise died down at night. The kitchen is pretty good sized and easy to work in; however, there was not a non-stick frying pan for eggs.
Surrounding Area:
We really enjoyed Taormina and went there twice. It was a challenge to find parking though. Ultimately we found this parking 'Lunghi", large parking garage location that had a free shuttle to the center part of town. It worked pretty well. You just have to follow the parking signs and accept that you end up going back down the hill. We also enjoyed driving to Mt Etna. We drove up the back way and came back through Catania. We'd recommend the reverse although you're more likely to hit bus traffic so you can get to the top faster and then take the gondola-driving tour before it gets too late. An early start in any case is a good idea. The other area we enjoyed was Siracusa but you need a really early start so you can spend enough time there. We enjoyed the archaeological sites and then wandering on the Ortigia island. There was a parking spot not far from the museum.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town was Gaggi and although it wasn't that far away, walking there would be very dangerous. It has a couple of grocery stores and the Cafe Nuovo for a quick snack - the pastries there were really good. The details are in the information provided by the villa owners.
Tips or Restaurants:
It's always a good idea to have some toilet paper, soap and shampoo. The villa is cleaned 3 times a week. You can request a towel change during your stay. The restaurant next door, A Cassita, is excellent but pricey. There aren't any menus but after you are seated Pippo will discuss with you want you'd like to have that day - fish, meat, pasta, etc. The bruschetta is excellent as are several of the other small plates. If you have a particular desire but it isn't available the day you are there, he'll arrange to have it for you another night. We had a couple of people that really wanted a sardine dish and it was arranged specially.
Directions:
The directions were really easy to follow and the villa was easy to recognize.
Check In Out:
We had to depart very early on Saturday morning and the owners were able to check us out the night before.

Becky , November

Overall:
The owners were excellent hosts. The property was very attractive externally and extremely well decorated and furnished internally.
Enjoyed Most:
The swimming pool was perfect for the kids and enabled us to have a relaxing time while they played and swam
Enjoyed Least:
No particular dislikes.
Surrounding Area:
Easy access to autostrada and therefore to the whole of the east coast and central Sicily. The scenery was very pleasant, the ambiance rural, the local town provided all essential requirements.
Tips or Restaurants:
We arrived late, having had a significant delay in flights. We hadn't eaten much during the day and we missed the local restaurants because of the late arrival - bringing some food "just in case" would have been a good idea, particularly if you have kids as we did. The nearby restaurant, La Cassita, is only 100 metres away. There is no menu but the owner speaks very good English and they cook great food. Work on 25 Euros per head including drinks. Paradise, which is about 1 mile away, has better views but the food was a little less exciting and they speak almost no English.
Directions:
Worth taking a GSM as it takes the stress out of driving especially at night. We didn't really use the written instructions but they seemed good.
Check In Out:
The owner was very helpful and considerate even though we arrived very late because of flight delays and was there to greet us and show us around at 11pm

Philip, September

Overall:
Overall wonderful experience.
Enjoyed Most:
Very well located for visiting the island, particularly the east coast. It's a beautiful villa with wonderful attention to detail and an informative and most helpful host.
Surrounding Area:
Having Taormina, with its restaurants, views and shopping nearby is a plus. Other nearby sights include Etna, the Alcantara Gorge and the charming perched towns of Castelmola and Castiglione. The beach at Giardini Naxos is nice but we relied on the beutiful pool at the villa. Day trips to Agrigento, Siracusa, Piazza Armerina and other sights are quite manageable.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town, Gaggi, was about 1 kilometer away. It had supermarket, ATM and some other stores but a car is necessary at this location and the villa has a parking area.
Tips or Restaurants:
The house is well equipped. The best restaurants around are in Taormina, including our first choice, a three star expensive "continental" called Casa Grugno via Santa Maria de Greci with its fixed price tasting menu at 70 Euros per person.
Directions:
They were very clear.

Arthur, July

Overall:
We rented the entire villa - Gabriel, Ezekial, and Cupid quarters and this was perfect for our group of 13 - 6 couples and one teenager. This is an outstanding place to plan a reunion or a party for a special occasion. The beautiful large marble table on the first floor terrace provided a perfect setting for the dinners that we prepared in the kitchens. There was more than enough room for all of us to enjoy dinner together.
Enjoyed Most:
The position of the property, its historical importance, and the beauty to which it has been restored are all awe inspiring. The views from each terrace were remarkable and we never tired of a single one, spending most all of our time outdoors. Our favorite place was underneath the top of a 500 year-old palm tree on the upper terrace that provided a calming sense of retrospection. The villa sits in a valley that opens on one end in the distance to a view of the water. On the other end there is a view of Graniti snaking up a distant hill. The valley provides a wonderful and continuous breeze. The hosts are both American and Sicilian and provided outstanding service and most interesting conversation. They were very in tune to our needs and helped to make the experience very special for all of our group. The pool area is remarkable. Photographs display only a hint of the beauty and charm of this location.
Enjoyed Least:
The villa is easy to get to and convenient to many sites in the area, but as such it is on the intersection of two roads, one to Graniti and connecting the route to the Alacantra Gorge, Francavilla, and the autostrada. As such there is more traffic noise than some might like. On the other hand, we enjoyed watching the dance of the cars on the roads and the bedrooms were well insulated so that our sleep was not affected.
Surrounding Area:
This is a perfect spot for Eastern Sicily. We spent several days in Taormina - you can never get enough of Taormina, on the beach at Giardini Naxos, saw the Alacantra Gorge, and even made a day trip to Siracusa. Great views of Mount Etna are in almost every scene. Each evening was spent on a Terrace enjoying some very good, but very reasonable from local stores, Sicilian wines with great cheese. Every morning, coffee at the the same spot. So as outstanding as the surrounding area is, the time at the villa was the highlight for us.
Nearby Events or Locales:
You drive through the nearest small town to arrive at the villa. This is the town of Gaggi and it has two small grocery stores, an all night gas station with prices 20 cents cheaper than the autostrata, a bank with automatic teller window for use with check cards, a gelateria-pizzeria. It is about a mile away, but it wouldn't be an easy walk. We usually stopped on our drive into or out of the villa. This was perfect and much more convenient than any other places that we have stayed.
Tips or Restaurants:
The grocery stores in Gaggi had great supplies. One is on the road into town Ali the other is on the way out Maxi Sconto. Both had staff that were very courteous and helpful and although the staff of the groceries did not speak English, this did not provide a barrier. The highlights for us were the Pecorino Fresco, Parmesano Reggiano not like what arrives in the US, fresh ricotta, all the vegetables but especially the eggplant, zucchini in fiori, tomatoes, and wine from 1 euro a bottle. The restaurant that is on the other side of the villa parking area is a treat. Come with a healthy appetite. If you would like, the host will shower you with waves of dishes - we counted 11 on one night. You might be forced to wave the white flag. You can have dinner out on their deck with a view of the villa. There are many choices in Taormina - Granduca is a good one. Have a beer or coffee in the main square Aprile IX. Have a pizza on the beach at Giardini Naxose.g, da Antonio.
Directions:
Don't forget to exit at Giardini Naxos off the autostrada.
Check In Out:
Well done. The host helped us by taking the deposit in US dollars. This was helpful since we were at the end of a long trip at this point and didn't want to have too many euros left over.

Jerry, May

Overall:
A lot of what made this trip so special were the property owners. They treated us like family and were very knowledgeable and interesting to talk with. No matter what we asked they were very helpful and kind.
Enjoyed Most:
The beauty and charm of the entire property made it a perfect setting for our Sicilian holiday.
Enjoyed Least:
It is hard to come up with a negative but I guess it might have been nice to be able to walk places rather than use a car all the time.
Surrounding Area:
The diversity of the options for day trips as well as dining and sightseeing.
Tips or Restaurants:
We were pretty well prepared since I have been to Italy several times, therefore, I advised my friends with as much detail as I could. I rely a lot on Frommers guide books; they really have never let me down

Pat, May

Overall:
The owners are awesome. They are welcoming and fun and very helpful with suggestions and directions.
Enjoyed Most:
Every detail of the villa is wonderfully designed-from the rooms and furniture to the antique pottery. The wrap-around terraces were great and the pool was of coarse a favorite for our family. The kitchen was very well equipped and we cooked some great meals and ate ouside on the terrace overlooking the orchards.
Enjoyed Least:
A few honking horns on the road below, but not a problem.
Surrounding Area:
The area has a quiet country feeling, and the villa is 15 min. from the beach, 10 min. from the waterfalls and 30 min. from Taormina.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gaggi is the nearest town - not really walking distance, but has good food stores -grocery,f ish, butcher, bakery.
Tips or Restaurants:
The restaurant right next to the villa is the best in the area. There's no menu, you just have what they're serving that day. My Sicilian friends said it was some of the best authentic food they had eaten.
Check In Out:
Don't forget cash for the deposit.

Susan, August

Overall:
We had a wonderful and peaceful vacation. We had seven people and we all were very comfortable.
Enjoyed Most:
It was newly renovated and completely up to date while keeping with the villa ambience. The patio, swimming pool and grounds were beautiful. Although there were other guests we enjoyed complete privacy. The hosts were exceptional and were very accommodating to our needs.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing. All was very good.
Surrounding Area:
Centrally located for day trips to the areas we were interested in seeing.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Nearest small town was Gaggi. Not really within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
All necessary items were available. Strongly recommend having a car available. The Paradise was very good.
Directions:
Directions were excellent.
Check In Out:
No problems, it went very smoothly.

Steve, August

Overall:
Phil and Carmello were spectacular hosts--good company and delightful guides to food and culture.
Enjoyed Most:
The hosts were extremely knowledgeable and helpful in our efforts to immerse into Sicilian culture. The location was superb with respect to the east coast of the island. The surrounding hill towns of Motta Camastra, Castiglione, Forza d'Agro and many others are fascinating and quite as they must have been in the 12t5h-15th centures. The restaurant next door to the villa, A Casitta, was nothing short of excellent.
Enjoyed Least:
Guests should be advised that the property is located directly on the road to Graniti. The road however is below--we only occasionally noticed the sound of cars negotating the sharp turn. Also, your description of the property implies access from the second floor to a small pool and private garden area. This was not the case.
Surrounding Area:
Etna is always a dramatic presence. Easy access to Siracusa, the Aeolian Islands, Messina and of course Taormina which is about 10 minutes drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
Al Feudo, a short distance away cooks fish in the traditional Sicilian style slow cooking in salt--but you must call ahead.

Alan, July

Overall:
We rented three properties, and we really loved this villa. The two owners were great. The villa is out a little from the main area but the facilities were great. The kitchen was very good; our evenings were great; and the place was very comfortable. We really enjoyed the place and the owners were very acccommodating. Although, this was the most expensive of the three properties that we rented, this one was the best of the three in terms of being a villa.
