Leeann, August

Overall:
The villa was beautiful, loved the view of the church, would love to live there.
Enjoyed Most:
Loved it all: villa, scenery, proximity to Cortona and Camucia. Very comfortable and pretty quiet most times.
Enjoyed Least:
There is a villa nearby with barking dogs.
Surrounding Area:
Everything is close. We walking to shopping and the market and got a lot of exercise that way.
Tips or Restaurants:
We loved Cortona. The locals were friendly and gave us good recommendations for places to visit and wine to try. Bring or rent a car with a GPS; I think it would have saved us. Make sure you have a 3-prong adapter as the 2-prong Europe ones do not work. It's very helpful to know some Italian!

Sheila, October

Overall:
The villa was better than expected. We loved it. You definitely need a car.
Enjoyed Most:
Loved the view of the church and all the architecture. It was very private and had a nice yard.
Enjoyed Least:
The entrance driveway to the property.
Surrounding Area:
Location was good. Travelled to Cortona and other surrounding towns. Liked being not far from Cortona for shopping and dining.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona--not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
All the food was wonderful. In Cortona, go to Molesini wine shop. Marco was very helpful and speaks English.
Directions:
We did not have a GPS, which would have helped. Had to call owners a few times to confirm directions, but their English isn't good. Texting was much easier. We were very glad to arrive at the villa.
Check In Out:
We liked the adventure. It's helpful to know some Italian.

Penny, October

Overall:
The stay was very relaxing. We were there to celebrate my 50th birthday. Enjoyed the villa very much.
Enjoyed Most:
The view was incredible. The architecture of the villa was amazing.
Enjoyed Least:
There was nothing about the property we did not like.
Surrounding Area:
The views.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona. It was walkable, but the terrain is pretty intense and we had an elderly woman with us so we opted to take the car.
Tips or Restaurants:
Be very careful with adapters for electronics. I had bought the appropriate adapter, but it did not work in all of the outlets in the villa. I would like to suggest Il Loccato. It is delicious. Also, please visit Molesini Wineshop. Incredible variety of wines. Brunello rocks.
Directions:
We did not use GPS. Villa was difficult to find! Driveways are somewhat secluded.
Check In Out:
As the key holder did not speak fluent English, check-in and check-out were a little challenging.

Pam, October

Overall:
A great location! Just as advertised.
Enjoyed Most:
Completely contained, quiet and restful. Views were great.
Enjoyed Least:
The driveway.
Surrounding Area:
Loved the view and walled city.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona
Check In Out:
Was quick and easy.

Margaret, October

Overall:
Very good, as advertised.
Enjoyed Most:
The location and the view.
Enjoyed Least:
The road traffic.
Surrounding Area:
Close to town and a great Tuscan home.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona is the nearest town, and is within walking distance (if you dare).
Tips or Restaurants:
Go past Cortona, up the hill, and you'll find a great little family restaurant and inn.
Directions:
The owner takes you to the house, which is great.
Check In Out:
All is great, no complaints.

Andy, June

Overall:
Quite lovely. A peaceful, bucolic, ancient farmhouse that provides a welcoming atmosphere and serene retreat.
Enjoyed Most:
The charm and age of the farmhouse. I feel we were part of the community and exported back to a time of a slower way of life, yet we had all the amenities of today.
Enjoyed Least:
I believe that Italians like their mattresses harder than Americans; this can take some getting used to.
Surrounding Area:
The church across the street, the village of Cortona, and the ability to see and visit many old villages in the area by car.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona it is an uphill walk on a busy street.
Tips or Restaurants:
Everything you need is there. It is well-furnished down to morning coffee. Did not have a bad experience at any of the restaurants in Cortona.
Directions:
Enrico had us follow him to the property, which was very nice.
Check In Out:
Again, Enrico was professional and helpful.

Pandora, September

Enjoyed Most:
The view, the pool and yard. We spent most afternoons relaxing in the pool. It is small but with the jets it was very very nice!! The kitchen was very well supplied. We were able to have several dinners sitting out by the pool enjoying the view. Having a washing machine was very helpful and things dried very quickly in the heat.
Enjoyed Least:
There was a lot of road noise. It was a challenge to get in and out of the driveway. It was very hot the week we were there and we found the house didn't have very good air circulation on the bedroom floor, so the bedrooms were hot. There were air conditioners in the bedrooms but one of them didn't work very well and a breeze would have been nice. It would have been nice to have a few more towels - maybe even pool towels.
Surrounding Area:
We love Cortona and the surrounding area. The four of us had rented another villa in 2004 in Cortona so it was nice to be back again. We took a few day trips, one by car to Montepulciano, Pienza and San Quirico d' Orcia, and one day we took the train into Firenze. The location was really good as a base.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona - it was within walking distance but usually it was easier to drive to one of the parking lots outside the wall and walk in from there. It was still quite a hike uphill.
Tips or Restaurants:
One of our favorite places to eat is Trattoria Tuscana. They are friendly and the food is wonderful! We stopped on our way to the villa at the COOP to pick up supplies, the house did have some things and the owner had left water in the refrigerator and a bowl of fruit and a tray of vegetables for us, which was very nice. Zip lock bags are very useful. I always pack a supply when I travel.
Check In Out:
Everything went very smoothly.

John Suzanne, July

Enjoyed Most:
The yard and pool area was great and the views of the countryside were wonderful.
Enjoyed Least:
Small living room.
Surrounding Area:
Cortona was excellent and we were close enough to drive to all the surrounding hill towns. Even Assisi was pretty close.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona was the closet town. We waked back but it was quite a hike up the hill to Cortona with a lot of traffic.
Tips or Restaurants:
We had plenty of supplies and staples to use in the villa and our land lady brought us an alarm clock to use as we had to leave to take a friend to catch a flight very early on the last day. We were also able to check in several hour early.

Paul, July

Enjoyed Most:
Beautiful garden, with dome-level view of Santa Maria de Calcinaio almost within spitting distance! Hosts were charming and helpful.
Enjoyed Least:
Access. Both driveway exits were perilous.
Surrounding Area:
Proximity to Cortona, which is a delightful place.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona would have been walkable if the road hadn't had so much traffic, and the hill hadn't been so steep.
Tips or Restaurants:
Everything we really needed was there. We loved Fuflun's Restaurant.
Check In Out:
Both were easy. Surcharge for electricity used was reasonable.

Ellen, June

Enjoyed Most:
Location.
Enjoyed Least:
Entrance to the lane.
Surrounding Area:
Countryside and towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The town was not walkable, unless you walk up hills a lot.
Tips or Restaurants:
No kettle.

Lynn, May

Overall:
Would rent it again. The ladies we dealt with were so gracious!
Enjoyed Most:
Location and people we dealt with.
Enjoyed Least:
Entrance and exit.
Surrounding Area:
Everything!
Check In Out:
Since we don't carry a cell phone, we had to find a store that would call the people to let them know we had arrived. But storekeepers were very accommodating and called for us. The ladies were at the property within 5 minutes!

Joan, November

Overall:
We would come again!!!
Enjoyed Most:
The location is wonderful - we loved Cortona and also loved being just outside city in a more secluded place. The house is charming and the view of the church is spectacular.
Enjoyed Least:
A lot of road noise.
Surrounding Area:
It was a great home base to visit the rest of Tuscany.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona. It is not really accessible by walking - the roads are not conducive. But it is very close.
Tips or Restaurants:
Osteria del Teatro was outstanding!
Check In Out:
Our hosts were incredibly accommodating with both a late check-in due to travel delays, leading us to the property the first time, and with getting us our lost luggage. They were really wonderful.

Gay, October

Overall:
The first thing we told the owners when they came for our final visit was that the pictures on the web site do not do the property justice. We were all very pleasantly surprised by the charm and comfort.
Enjoyed Most:
It's difficult to pick out just one thing: the yard area was private; quaint; the view was breathtaking; the accommodations were awesome!
Enjoyed Least:
The road above and below the villa was quite busy with traffic - a bit noisy while lounging in the garden. Also, presented a challenge to navigate on foot - but made it quite easy to catch a lift from the locals to the top of the hill to Cortona.
Surrounding Area:
The olive trees and grape vines, the lake visible in the distance, the proximity to the train station, catching the bus in the morning with the local school children, the serenity of Cortona, especially after the chaos of Rome!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona is just up the hill as the crow flies, but too long and too steep a hike for our crew to walk up. The bus route up and down to Camucia is at the foot of the driveway so we felt easily mobile, with less than a 5-minute ride to the top. And we never had more than 5 cars pass without having one stop to give us a lift up. The desk clerk at Hotel Luca gave us directions for a pretty easy walk back down to the villa - down with only 100 yards or so walking on a busy section of road.
Tips or Restaurants:
We didn't really find the villa lacking for anything of necessity. We utilized the kitchen frequently, so ziplock bags were handy to have along. We picked up typical household staples, ie toilet tissue, aluminum foil, coffee filters, etc. at the store to replenish what was already available.
Directions:
Initially, finding the villa was a challenge. Once we located it, the directions were actually pretty accurate, unlike our Italian! Thank goodness for the helpful clerk at Hotel Luca.

Elizabeth, September

Overall:
The owners were wonderful - very warm, helpful, and generous. The place was exactly what we had hoped for, and we've already recommended it to several friends. If you want to stay at this property, better reserve it soon, before we do! We now consider it a base for our central Italy travel.
Enjoyed Most:
The house itself was creatively and lovingly restored. Everything was designed well, and worked perfectly. The place was lush and very private, and the photos on the website don't do it justice. There was nothing that we needed that wasn't there. The views from the home were gorgeous, and the location was ideal for exploring both Tuscany and Umbria.
Enjoyed Least:
The only drawback of any kind was in getting into and out of the driveway onto the road. There are two ways in. We found the lower driveway far easier and safer to enter and exit from. Using the mirrors located at the exits is a good practice, and once familiar with them, we got more comfortable with the process.
Surrounding Area:
There was history, geographic beauty, and art in every direction...something for every taste. The roads over the eastern hills to Umbertide were filled with beautiful farms and rolling countryside. The tourist hordes weren't crushing, and in the rare instances when there were crowds in Assisi and San Gimignano, the places themselves were so delightful that it scarcely mattered.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona and Camucia were both within walking distance, although the route to go to either was along a somewhat busy road, so we didn't walk to either one. There was plenty of walking to be done once we got to the towns anyway, so it wasn't a detraction.
Tips or Restaurants:
For a small group, maximum of 4, the home is wonderful, and for a honeymoon like ours, it's even better. La Bucaccia Trattoria in Cortona is outstanding. The weekly farmers market in downtown Camucia is excellent. A morning Bomba and Cappuccino at Vannelli's in Camucia are as good as anywhere in Tuscany.
Check In Out:
The owners were punctual and reliable in being where they agreed to be when we checked in and out. They explained all details very well, and were very accommodating.

David, October

Enjoyed Most:
The location and the overall quality of the house and contents. The owners were delightful and attentive, helping us secure a dentist appointment when one of us broke a tooth. One member was especially helpful in exchanging text messages with me to make sure we were getting on okay and to help me with my Italian. As a matter of personal taste, I would rather the owners increase the rent than have add-on charges for usage of utilities, firewood and the like. It's not a big thing. In fact, we probably benefitted from paying for the electricity based on usage because there were only two of us, and we were away from the house a lot. I would just prefer to pay the rent and forget about the rest
Enjoyed Least:
The turn onto the road up to Cortona.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona was nearby, but walking to town is impracticable, given the traffic.
Tips or Restaurants:
If you are American, bring ziplock plastic bags.

Michael, October

Overall:
This property was a wonderful home away from home. The owners are gracious hosts and the house is beautifully maintained and comfortable. Our experience was wonderful...one of the best vacation homes we've stayed in.
Enjoyed Most:
The location. It was very close to Cortona and also centrally located in Tuscany for convenient day trips. The view was spectacular and the house was much better than the photographs. It was exquisitely restored and meticulously maintained. The garden and the stone dipping pool overlooking the church of Santa Maria Calcinaio and the Val di Chiana were a highlight.
Enjoyed Least:
Getting in and out off the main road was tricky. While within walking distance to Cortona, it was necessary to walk along a busy road.
Surrounding Area:
Cortona is centrally located to key sites in Tuscany and Umbria. The train station in Camucia is easy to get to and offers easy and convenient day trip access to Florence.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona was the nearest town. We were there for the Tuscan Sun Festival in Cortona during the first two weeks of August...wonderful concerts. One could walk, but it was on a busy road.
Tips or Restaurants:
The kitchen was well-provisioned and the supermarket in Camucia had everything we needed. If staying in the summer, you might want to bring one or two beach towels for the pool.

Martha, August

Overall:
Would definitely return to Calcinaio on my next stay here!
Enjoyed Most:
The panoramic views are absolutely beautiful to look out in the morning or the wee hours of the night and view La Chiesa di Calcinaio is breathtaking! We enjoyed our early morning peaceful walks up to Cortona and hanging out in the gardens of Calcinaio, dipping in the very small pool and watching the sunsets! The owners are wonderful and so accomodating. They do not speak English, but that is the charm, and you will always manage to understand one another.
Enjoyed Least:
It is a little difficult getting out of the property onto the main road as the unpaved narrow driveway is steep and cars can come blazing by. We got the hang of it!
Surrounding Area:
Tuscany is beautiful and this location was a great midpoint! There are so many enchanting little towns within an hours drive....Montepulciano and Pienza... and you have beautiful Cortona at your footsteps.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona is the beautiful 13th century hilltop town approximately a mile up a steep winding main road. The town is very near and dear to me as I went to school there for a year to study art. The Cortonese are gracious people and watching daily life throughout the town is like turning back time....they savor life. It is a town full of art, beauty and solitude it has become an artists haven. The walk up from Calcianio is steep and along a busy road. The town streets are also steep so put on your walking shoes.
Tips or Restaurants:
If you want to avoid crowds and heat - we travelled during the hottest temps in 100 years! -avoid the summer months. If you need some refreshing cooling off, especially with kids, head for the public pool in Camucia down the hill. Many great little restaurants in Cortona and neighboring towns the owners have many business cards on hand.
Check In Out:
Have an Italian dictionary on hand!

Marie, July

Overall:
It was exactly as advertised, a beautiful house in a beautiful setting.
Enjoyed Most:
The view.
Enjoyed Least:
The living room furniture - the room size and the chairs were not very inviting, expecially if there were more than 2 people.
Surrounding Area:
As advertised, it was close to a road, but the noise was not intrusive. The view of the church and the valley was spectacular.
Events or Locales:
The Saturday market day in Cortona was worth a visit.
Tips or Restaurants:
La Grotto Trattoria was excellent and inexpensive (try the ribollita). We recommend Fufluns for antipasto (get the house special antipasto).
