Customer Reviews

Overall:
Superb.
Enjoyed Most:
Very comfortable, lovely view, surrounded by its own olive grove and herbs. Immaculately clean and well kept. The pool is lovely but we didn't have the best weather for it in October.
Enjoyed Least:
The pillows and the beds were firm (a European issue, often.)
Surrounding Area:
The boulangeries and lovely, friendly townspeople. Fluency in French didn't hurt. Great food and so central to many sites and great drives.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St Remy de Provence; driving less than 5 minutes.
Tips or Restaurants:
-Industrie-- great food, great place to watch an Olympique match; Mas Valentine -- just down the hill, fabulous food and service ; Le table de Nicholas the boulangerie next to the church is the one. The one in St Etienne-de-Gres is the most amazing in the neighbourhood. And right across the street is an organic fruit and vegetable epicure, fruit for your merengue!
Directions:
The key is to keep looking for the GREEN bin-- the rest on the road are grey with green lids! Not that hard to find. The daunting sounding directions off the main road are really easy.
Check In Out:
Easy, and very warm. We were met by Chantal, with goodies. But no, they speak NO English. I speak French, but i am sure sign language would have worked. They went away to Spain, but had a friend available to help us with things, whom we called on and came right away. We felt very well looked after.

Overall:
Absolutely fantastic! We were made to feel very welcome with basics already in the fridge and cabinets such as butter, bread, jam, olive oil, milk, and coffee. A beautiful villa and surroundings.
Enjoyed Most:
Probably the fantastic view and beautiful gardens full of blooming lavender and other flowers. Having a beautiful pool and a covered patio for dinners were also a big plus! Also very nice to have access to a washer and dryer. They also supplied hair dryers and fans in the bedrooms, though the nights were comfortable and their were NO mosquitoes.
Enjoyed Least:
The couple that showed us around the property did not speak any English and we did not speak French! It would have been helpful to have instructions for basic things such as how to operate their oven, other appliances, where to take the trash and recycling, etc written down in English. We did manage for the most part.
Surrounding Area:
Excellent spot for day trips! We not only went into St. Remy en Provence 5 minutes away, but to Avignon, Pont du Gard, Les Baux-de-Provence, L' Isle sur la Sorgue, Gordes, Roussillon, and Les Baux-de-Provence!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Saint Remy en Provence was about a 5 minute drive away, with lovely cafes, restaurants, and shops.
Tips or Restaurants:
It is a bit tricky to find. Mostly because the two small stone signs on the ground were almost hidden by tall grasses! It is a long drive up before you make a hairpin turn to the right and head down the drive to the villa. You can't go wrong eating in St. Remy, though we mostly ate lunch out on our day trips and ate light dinners at the villa. The markets in the villages are wonderful! Bring wash cloths or a loofah as they only provide one bath towel per person, but do supply pool towels.
Directions:
It is tricky getting out of Avignon, but once you are on the road to Saint Remy, you are fine. They need to make the stones marking the turn into the drive to the villa larger and more noticeable.
Check In Out:
The language barrier was the only issue.

Overall:
The house is beautiful and charming the bright yellow colors of the well-equipped kitchen, the marvelous covered outdoor patio, and the grand vistas of the Alpilles, to say nothing of the fabulous swimming pool, combined to make it a marvelous experience. The owners are gracious hosts who were kind enough to equip us with the first-night essentials including wine upon our arrival. We would gladly return, although we would probably choose another month other than August, very fine weather notwithstanding, due to the crowds in the towns -- it seemed half of Paris was in Provence this year. Provence is great fun - my first time there, even though I have spent substantial time in France and very beautiful. I don't think the photos on your site convey the beauty of the scenery.
Enjoyed Most:
The kitchen, the outdoor patio, the wonderful views, the swimming pool.
Enjoyed Least:
The beds are not the most comfortable in the world, but my experience tells me that comfy USA-style king-queen beds are not as much of a must-have item in many EU countries. My wife and I did just fine with the double bed. You may want to check with the owners re the bicycles, because we did not see them when we were there.
Tips or Restaurants:
The supermarche on the north end of town is open on Saturdays until at least 7 PM in the summer, and the boulangerie just before the market seems to be open on Sunday mornings. And I only wish I had a supermarket this good in the USA. One MUST have a rental car for this property.

Overall:
The villa, the pool and the landscaping were all beautiful. The house was extremely well equipped, particularly the kitchen and pool amenities. We had a fabulous time.
Enjoyed Most:
It is maintained beautifully inside and out. The owners were very friendly and provided lots of wonderful home-grown fruits, tomatoes, jam, olive oil, as well as wine and breakfast items.
Enjoyed Least:
Can't think of a single thing.
Surrounding Area:
St. Remy is a charming town, and within very easy driving distance. There are multiple wonderful places to visit - made it easy to relax at the pool and spend half a day exploring nearby towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St.Remy de Provence - just 2km away. Not really walking distance, but you need a car anyway in the area.
Tips or Restaurants:
You need nothing for the house, they even have towels by the pool. Lots of great restaurants in St. Remy - our favorite was La Maison Jenune, a more authentic and equally delicious experience at La Reine Jeune.
Directions:
We did not use a GPS. If you pay very close attention the directions are very good. But - the stone markers are easy to miss. Daylight arrival makes finding the villa much easier - can't imagine finding it at night in the dark.
Check In Out:
The owners and their family were there to greet us, show us around the house and all its amenities and the provisions they provided. It was a great way to be welcomed.

Overall:
My wife and I were very happy with our hosts and felt the house and location were fabulous. it was like living in the Garden of Eden with the most luscious figs, almond trees and pomegranates. The view and the traditional construction of the home certainly enhanced our experience.
Enjoyed Most:
The view and the traditional construction of the home.
Enjoyed Least:
The master bed and the pillows. The bed had a plastic cover on the mattress and was hard. The pillows were thin and hard. The road access was difficult and would be potentially non accessible for anyone driving a sports car.
Surrounding Area:
St Remy is well located for sight seeing with many interesting areas within a 30 - 40 minute drive. The town itself was large enough to offer many shopping opportunities and restaurants.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St Remy was the closest town but not in walking distance. A car was essential.
Tips or Restaurants:
I suggest you accept the hard beds and consider buying extra pillows to enhance your stay.
Directions:
I did use a GPS during my stay which was a considerable help. Finding the property was done solely by following your directions. I did do a dry run using Google Earth prior to my arrival which helped considerably.
Check In Out:
The owners could not speak any English. I was able to speak French so this did not present a problem to me but I am not clear how difficult this would be for non french speaking guests.

Frederick, September

Enjoyed Most:
The pool, and the outdoor dining area.

Overall:
Calabrun was a wonderful place, and it really is a piece of paradise. The owners were very welcoming and helpful. It was lovely to arrive to homemade apricot jam, olive oil from Bernard's olives, and other lovely goodies. It was a relaxing holiday, and we just wish that we were still there! Hopefully we will be back very soon.
Enjoyed Most:
The peace and quiet along with the French aspect - the whole Provence experience. It was exactly what we were looking forward to.
Enjoyed Least:
The beds were uncomfortable.
Surrounding Area:
The views, the proximity to other areas of France, and the vast array of things to do.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St Remy - was not really in walking distance as we had a small baby with us.
Tips or Restaurants:
The town of St Remy has some wonderful restaurants, and we would encourage people to try them all. Aldo's does wonderful Italian particularly Margarita pizza!!!
Check In Out:
The owner was waiting for us along with his daughter who spoke English. They showed us around the property and left their phone numbers for us. Sandra called us to see how we were going, and we let her know when we were leaving. They was there on the morning we left to say goodbye which was lovely.

Rebecca, October

Overall:
We had a fabulous time. The villa worked out well for the four of us. .
Enjoyed Most:
The serene location.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing
Nearby Events or Locales:
St. Remy was the closest.
Check In Out:
Bernard and Chantal were both there to greet us. They brought us fresh baguettes, apricot jam, and butter. We were all set for breakfast.

Sharon, September

Overall:
We very much enjoyed our stay at Calabrun. The villa itself is beautiful. Very quiet and set quite a bit back from the road with fantastic views of the valley and mountains. All in all we had a wonderful stay and would recommend it.
Enjoyed Most:
The location is also perfect for any day trips to the surrounding towns and countryside. The house is well appointed...good kitchen, and plenty of towels.
Enjoyed Least:
The dryer wasn't working when we were there, but they provided a drying rack which served quite well. One thing we noticed not just at this villa, but in other places in Europe during our vacation is the beds are a bit smaller and shorter than we Americans are used to especially my 6'3" husband. Also, we had been warned about the possibility of bugs, which we interpreted as possible mosquitoes. There are no mosquitoes, but instead we had houseflies and horseflies. There being no screens in the windows of most European villas the houseflies were difficult to keep out. The horseflies were mostly bothersome around the pool area. This was a bit of an irritant, but not enough to keep us from using the pool.
Directions:
We had a little trouble with the directions, but we called the keyholder from a pay phone in St. Remy and he quickly came to meet us and lead us to the villa. Once there, he and his wife gave us a very warm welcome and showed us around. Before he left, Bernard even took my husband on a short drive to show him where things were, like the supermarket.

Overall:
Calabrun was wonderful! Youcef the chef was amazing and I highly recommend him for anyone visiting the area. Thanks for all your help planning this trip.

Overall:
We were delighted with our pick. We also thoroughly enjoyed visiting with Henri Milan at his winery, Domain Milan, very close by in the area. He was charming and the wine was excellent.
Enjoyed Most:
We loved its location outside of town and the beautiful view of Les Alpilles and the beautiful landscaping of the property itself. We also loved the clear view of the stars at night that is only possible away from the city. Pool area and pool was very nice.
Enjoyed Least:
Would have liked to be able to have a short walk to town, but wouldn't give up the view for it! Downstairs bed is somewhat more comfortable than upstairs bed.
Surrounding Area:
We loved the cherry trees and olive trees and lavender on the property, and the typical cypress behind the house.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St. Remy is the perfect place to get a wonderful flavor of Provence. It offers lots of sights and restaurants, but doesn't have the drawbacks of a big city like Aix and Arles, etc. a walk to town would be possible, but it's well more than an easy stroll.
Tips or Restaurants:
The kitchen was very well stocked, and the caretakers met us with a large bowl of cherries picked from the property, bread from the boulangerie, wine, coffee, milk, butter, etc. They don't speak English though, so come prepared with French phrasebook in hand in order to communicate. They were also very responsive to any problem. We blew a circuit one morning and he was there immediately. Both bathrooms even had hairdryers!

Barbara, May

Enjoyed Most:
Clean, quiet, magnificent view. Above all expectations.
Surrounding Area:
The propertry is 10 minutes by car from St. Remy. It is isolated on a plateau with a beautiful view of the mountains.
Tips or Restaurants:
You should buy from the market and bread shop. The house has an excellent kitchen and outdoor grill. Learn a bit French!
