The Cyclades make up the center of the Aegean Islands, which are west of Athens. The island's capital and main passenger port, Parikia, is a 10 minute drive from the village. The house is just 50 meters from the sea and is within walking distance of a smaller port. The island's airport (domestic flights only) is a 30 minute drive from Naoussa. The nearest international airport is on the island of Mykonos, which is two hours away by boat.

ExteriorDescription
This traditional, 300-year-old Cycladic house was built during the island's Venetian occupation and restored in 1992. A weathered, picturesque lane in the center of the village leads to the villa entrance. There are actually three different entrances to the villa; this design isolates it from the summer crowds of the cosmopolitan village, and at the same time, it offers guests easy access to the island's renowned nightlife. In addition to its typically-Cycladic architecture (arches, thick white plaster/stone walls, blue doors and windows), the marvelous garden (400 m2) and swimming pool are what make this villa unique. The garden walls are decorated with 16th century marbles, discovered in the house during the restoration. There is a pergola surrounded by pomegranate trees and bougainvillea. The garden is accessible via the kitchen, as well as via the first floor external staircase. Both the garden and the pool have automatic lights.

Q: Is the pool fenced?
Can we walk to the beach?
Do the bathrooms have decent showers, sinks and toilets?
Is the home located in a quiet area of town?
Is the home well furnished and comfortable?
Is there a cook available for some evenings?
A: Hi Ann, We rented Villa Naoussa for two weeks in August, 2005. The pool is fenced from the surrounding houses, but not from the villa itself. Thus, if you have young children, they can walk right out the kitchen door, and into the pool. The beach is less than 5 minutes away. The bathrooms are fine. The house is beautiful: funished nicely and comfortable. The owners are very congenial; we did not ask for a cook, but they may be able to hunt one down for you. We did our own cooking (we have kids who were 12 and 16 at the time). Paros and Naoussa are wonderful. Our only complaint was that, although quiet during the day, in the evening we could hear the music from the local bars on many nights (it seemed to start up around 10pm and go until probably 3am.) Our kids, who slept on the top floor, were not bothered. We slept on the ground floor and definitely noticed it. We also, however, did not use the air-conditioning, and thus, the windows were open, and we did not have ambient sound that might have blocked it. At other times the house was perfectly quiet, and, we felt, nicely located. I hope this is helpful to you. best wishes, Blair.
Q: do you need to speak greek or is english spoken
A: Pamela -
None of us spoke Greek. I have a very limited Greek vocabulary..just some very basic words.
Most of the people can speak english. And if they do not, then they are very nice and it is easy to gesture or find someone nearby that can help.
But we had no problems.
The owners speak perfect english. They Met us and guided us to the house. Very nice people!
Hope this helps.

Overall:
We loved Villa Naoussa. It has a great history - about 400 years old and renovated to the degree that it was on the cover of a magazine. It combined modern convenience with the historical view of the property.
Enjoyed Most:
The backyard and the swimming pool are unbelievable. Being literally right in the village of Naoussa - just walk out your front door was great.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The living room could have a little more seating - there really was only room for about three people to sit. Also the TV could be updated.
Surrounding Area:
The village of Naoussa has great shops and boutiques along with numerous restaurants with great food - all walking distance.
Nearby Events or Locales:
This villa is in the town.
Tips or Restaurants:
For future renters - important to know that there is a very steep staircase to the upper floor - this would not be good perhaps for less mobile people. Forget the name of the restaurant - but we particularly like the one that is just out the back door of the villa and down to the beach - not the harbor. Great food, great view, great service.
Directions:
The owners met us and were very very helpful and cordial.

Enjoyed Most:
Wonderful - The garden with pool was an oasis - very private and comfortable in every way. The kitchen was very well equipped. We couldn't have been more satisfied with the location in the town. The owners' welcome was special and set the tone for our 2 week stay.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The living room has comfortable seating for 3, but if more people are staying, not enough without bringing in the hard wooden kitchen chairs. The upstairs bathroom was small and the shower was awkward.
Surrounding Area:
2-10 minutes walking distance to everything you would reasonably want to buy or experience. Shopping, restaurants, bus transportation and car-bicycle-scooter rentals were within a 5 minutes walk.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The villa is located within Naoussa.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a cutting board and beach towels if applicable. If the pool is where you want to swim, the towels are not required. Very good restaurants that were quite reasonably priced were Pervolaria, Open Garden and the one directly across the road from Open Garden with a large outdoor seating area. The ones that are right on the water were not nearly as good and more costly. Cristoph's was excellent but much more expensive so the value equation was not as good.
Directions:
We appreciated the owners coming to the square to help us and show us the way to their villa, a short 2-3 minute walk away.
Check In Out:
The owner was most gracious both at the beginning and the end of our stay.

Overall:
Absolutely the quintessential traditional Greek villa with the outdoor area beautiful with a pool surrounded by red geraniums and bougainvillea and four seating areas. Gate from the pool area right into the main area of town. Much bigger than the pictures show and exceeded our expectations.
Enjoyed Most:
Quiet and private but in the center of Naoussa. Very charming owners. Had modern conveniences but with old world charm.
Unpleasant Surprises:
Beautiful pool, but deep. There is only a 5 foot area that an adult could stand. Not for children. The living room could use a better sofa and arrangement. No cable TV - missed CNN. No phone. The stairs to the second floor could be dangerous for children.
Surrounding Area:
Smack in the town. Out the door to all the shops and restaurants and grocers yet at the end of a dead end so very quiet. Naoussa very upscale village. Short walk to the harbor , bus, taxi stand and phones.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Villa is right in the center of Naoussa.
Tips or Restaurants:
Has a CD player--bring CDs. Has an iron and board, washer, dishwasher, etc. Well outfitted in the kitchen. Bring an alarm clock. The best restaurant was Perivolaria. Walk to the square daily for bread next to the taxi stand. Larger supermarket up the road next to a vegetable store. Mini marts right out the door but more expensive than the supermarket.
