About The Experience

Sample Old-World flavor in the Chianti, including an historic 9th century castle—once home to Machiavelli—and its surrounding hamlet. Choose an apartment in one of the village farmhouses, parsonage, or in the castle itself. Spend your time strolling about the hamlet and taking in the magnificent views, or take day trips throughout Tuscany, including Lucca, Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, and Volterra.

Location Description

The former home of one of Renaissance Italy's leading figures, this castle and its surrounding hamlet enjoy a hilltop location in the heart of the Chianti. The nearest towns are Montefiridolfi (2 km) and Bargino (2 km). The nearest food market is 2 km away. Additional shops, banks and a post office can be found in San Casciano.

Nearby Attractions: Be sure to experience the wines produced by the estate in their weekly wine tastings. Further afield, there are many other opportunities for wine tasting: La Sala Winery (San Casciano), Il Solatione Winery (Mercatale Val di Pesa), Cennatoio Winery and Villa Cafaggio Winery (Panzano). In Florence, explore Bargello and the Opera del Duomo which house two of the greatest collections of sculptures in the world. Along with the top museums like Uffizi, Galleria dell'Accademia, and Museo di Palazzo Vecchio, be sure to visit the Archeological Museum, the Museum of the History of Science and the Museo Stibbert, which has a famous collection of armor.

Interior Description
(119 m2/1,281 ft2)

Ground Floor: This traditional Tuscan farmhouse has plenty of space and all the amenities. The living room, complete with two couches (one of them a sofa-bed) and Kilim rugs, sports a beautiful open-beam ceiling and other antique furniture. Exposed stone walls lead into a dining room with a table for four. In one corner an old circular staircase leads up to the first floor. Beyond the dining room is a kitchen, decorated in antique blue and white terra-cotta tiles and equipped with an Italian coffee machine. Here is everything you need to prepare your own authentic Italian cuisine—including the modern convenience of a dishwasher! There is also a smaller table for informal meals. Step outside the kitchen door and prepare an open-air meal with the terra cotta and stone barbeque; eat outside at the provided table and chairs.

First Floor: Upstairs, spend a cozy evening in the second living room (entrance hall), warming yourself at the fireplace or curling up with a book on the daybed (suitable for sleeping one). On one side of the living room is a bathroom and bedroom with a queen-size bed. On the opposite side is another bedroom, this one with two twin-beds. Bathrooms are located off of the dining room on the ground floor and next to the double bedroom (bed is queen-sized) on the first floor (accessible from the upstairs living room and double bedroom). Each is equipped with a toilet, bidet, shower, and sink.

Customer Reviews

Overall:
Magical! We loved the villa. It was everything I hoped Tuscany to be.
Enjoyed Most:
The location and the amazing views. Wonderful staff and great pool. We loved starting our day with coffee and ending it with wine overlooking the Vale and vineyards below.
Enjoyed Least:
I wish the castle would have been available to guests more frequently than just the Wednesday night wine tasting. We could never take advantage of it. The location up that steep hill made walking into the nearest town impossible. Window screens would be an asset!
Surrounding Area:
All the lovely vineyards and hill towns. San Casciano was a great town and we got to know the bus route from there to Florence very well.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino. Not walkable for us due to the steep hill.
Tips or Restaurants:
We arranged for a personal chef through RentVillas, Mattisse, to give us two cooking lessons at the villa. It was so much fun and he gave us two extraordinary meals. I would highly suggest that any "foodie" guests inquire for information on cooking classes.
Directions:
We did use a GPS with mixed results. The directions were good but signage in Italy is limited and it's never easy to determine where you are.
Check In Out:
Very easy and the office staff was very helpful.

Overall:
Magical.
Enjoyed Most:
The location and history.
Enjoyed Least:
No air conditioning or bug screens on windows; we were there during a heat wave.
Surrounding Area:
Being surrounded by the beautiful Tuscan wine country.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino; not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring mosquito netting.
Directions:
Directions to property were OK;we used a GPS which had limited value.
Check In Out:
The office staff was wonderful. Sara and Cristiana were so helpful. It would have been nice to have access to the castle more than one evening a week. We never got to participate.

Overall:
We loved our stay at Machiavelli 4. The villa was spacious and comfortable. The furnishings were rustic, but added a feeling of authenticity to the experience.
Enjoyed Most:
We all agree that the views from the property were incredible. I enjoyed sleeping with the windows wide open and waking to a splendid view of vineyards and olive groves. Another enjoyable aspect of the property is its beautiful (and refreshing) infinity pool, which had its own incredible view. Having the reception desk on property was very convenient. Cristiana, Sara and Caterina were so helpful with directions, dining suggestions and making reservations.
Enjoyed Least:
Probably what we liked least were the switchbacks we had to navigate to reach the property, but we understand that it is the price one pays for the kind of views that are offered. Also, we had some difficulty with the clothes washer in the unit.
Surrounding Area:
It was easy to access many hill towns from the property. Also, the bus from Bargino into Florence was very convenient.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino and Montefidolfi were close, but the hills would make them difficult to walk to.
Tips or Restaurants:
One of our best meals was at La Scuderia, but there are numerous other restaurants in the area. We were happy that we brought plastic bags, scissors, and tape. Other supplies were easily purchased in the Coop in San Casciano. Definitely buy paper towels and Kleenex, which were not supplied.
Directions:
Having a GPS was very helpful, but the initial directions to property were quite good.
Check In Out:
Both were very easy and pleasurable because of the amazing staff at the property.

Linda, June
