About The Experience

Sample Old-World flavor in the Chianti, including an historic 9th century castle—once home to Machiavelli—and its surrounding hamlet. Choose an apartment in one of the village farmhouses, parsonage, or in the castle itself. Spend your time strolling about the hamlet and taking in the magnificent views, or take day trips throughout Tuscany, including Lucca, Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, and Volterra.

Location Description

The former home of one of Renaissance Italy's leading figures, this castle and its surrounding hamlet enjoy a hilltop location in the heart of the Chianti. The nearest towns are Montefiridolfi (2 km) and Bargino (2 km). The nearest food market is 2 km away. Additional shops, banks and a post office can be found in San Casciano.

Nearby Attractions: Be sure to experience the wines produced by the estate in their weekly wine tastings. Further afield, there are many other opportunities for wine tasting: La Sala Winery (San Casciano), Il Solatione Winery (Mercatale Val di Pesa), Cennatoio Winery and Villa Cafaggio Winery (Panzano). In Florence, explore Bargello and the Opera del Duomo which house two of the greatest collections of sculptures in the world. Along with the top museums like Uffizi, Galleria dell'Accademia, and Museo di Palazzo Vecchio, be sure to visit the Archeological Museum, the Museum of the History of Science and the Museo Stibbert, which has a famous collection of armor.

Interior Description
(119 m2/1,281 ft2)

Ground Floor: This traditional Tuscan farmhouse has plenty of space and all the amenities. The living room, complete with two couches (one of them a sofa-bed) and Kilim rugs, sports a beautiful open-beam ceiling and other antique furniture. Exposed stone walls lead into a dining room with a table for four. In one corner an old circular staircase leads up to the first floor. Beyond the dining room is a kitchen, decorated in antique blue and white terra-cotta tiles and equipped with an Italian coffee machine. Here is everything you need to prepare your own authentic Italian cuisine—including the modern convenience of a dishwasher! There is also a smaller table for informal meals. Step outside the kitchen door and prepare an open-air meal with the terra cotta and stone barbeque; eat outside at the provided table and chairs.

First Floor: Upstairs, spend a cozy evening in the second living room (entrance hall), warming yourself at the fireplace or curling up with a book on the daybed (suitable for sleeping one). On one side of the living room is a bathroom and bedroom with a queen-size bed. On the opposite side is another bedroom, this one with two twin-beds. Bathrooms are located off of the dining room on the ground floor and next to the double bedroom (bed is queen-sized) on the first floor (accessible from the upstairs living room and double bedroom). Each is equipped with a toilet, bidet, shower, and sink.

Customer Reviews

Overall:
It was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. The property and accommodations were just as pictured on RentVillas.com. The location was spectacular and the views were wonderful. The directions to the castle were clear and the reception staff was gracious and helpful from start to finish. Everything went smoothly and we had a wonderful vacation. I would recommend Machiavelli 4 without any reservation.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything. The location, the views, the facility itself mirrored the Tuscan landscape-lots of stone and wooden beams in the construction. The baths were modern. The kitchen had both a dishwasher and a washing machine. The furnishings were clean and comfortable and provided both an indoor and outdoor place to eat. The graciousness of the reception staff added to our stay. They went out of their way to be of assistance.
Enjoyed Least:
It would be hard to think of anything negative. The hair pin turns to get to the property were slightly threatening. But then how else could one get to the top and enjoy the beauty of the views. May was a perfect time to visit.
Surrounding Area:
We visited all of the surrounding hill top villages and spent two days in Florence. We could have spent more than one day in each of the hilltop towns. We drove the Chianti loop and learned so much about Tuscan history. The art we saw in Florence was spectacular. How can one explain what it is to stand in front of Michaelangelo's David and not be awestruck. The food was out of this world. We ate in small local restaurants and enjoyed Italian cuisine at its finest.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town was Bargino. It was about one km by car. It had a small restaurant and a small grocery store. For more variety we drove to San Casciano where there was a COOP or larger supermarket type grocery. There were several good restaurants in San Casciano--our favorite was Nello. The notice on the menu said that their food was so fresh they didn't keep a refrigerator. And it was!!!
Tips or Restaurants:
Suggestions: Rent or your own GPS system. We bought the maps for Italy and programmed home immediately. Then no matter where we were we could get back to Machiavelli. Rick Steves' book Tuscany was excellent and we used David Wagner's self guided tours. He had several good recommendations for restaurants. Good idea to call ahead for a reservation if you know where you want to go in advance.
Directions:
Property direction were good. See above about GPS.
Check In Out:
Everything went so smoothly or both ends we couldn't believe it. From beginning to end we had a marvelous time.

Overall:
We loved our stay at Machiavelli...we had a car so were able to visit many areas of Tuscany, and still have a home base. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, the surroundings were so beautiful it felt like a fairy tale. Our dream vacation!!
Enjoyed Most:
The location was great...easy to travel into Florence, or to any of the other areas in Tuscany. Or we could just sit and enjoy the local wine while looking at the stunning views from our own terrace!
Surrounding Area:
Tuscany in the Fall? It was beautiful!!
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano...about a 5 mile trip...easy to find, with great little shops and restaurants, as well as a grocery store.
Tips or Restaurants:
Make sure you have two of the little coffee percolators! They only make one "American-size cup", so we made sure they stayed busy. The wine at the villa is very reasonable and quite good. There is a small restaurant in Borgino (closest village) that specializes in seafood that was a true surprise...elegant with excellent food, but looks like a strip-mall storefront. One of the best we tried!
Directions:
We used a GPS, and it led us right to the villa. We certainly would recommend renting a car with this option. We traveled all over Tuscany with no problem, thanks to our GPS.
Check In Out:
The office closes at 6:00 PM so be sure to be there before that!

Overall:
We had a fabulous experience. The staff was wonderful as were our accommodations. We loved the two level house we stayed in and the amount of room that it provided for us!
Enjoyed Most:
The view and the buildings/castle were gorgeous...exactly what we were looking for. I loved our little house with the two levels of living space, concrete counter tops, beautiful windows and easy to care for flooring. In addition, the stone buildings, pathways and various levels of the property provided some wonderful views and beautiful opportunities for picture taking. I really enjoyed the outdoor seating the property provided so we could sip wine or coffee and enjoy the views. We met some very nice people at breakfast who were also able to show us their rooms in the castle, which was very, very cool. And, I cannot forget to compliment the estate on their wine. I didn't get a chance to taste their olive oil, but the wine was fabulous! I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a wonderful taste of Tuscany!
Enjoyed Least:
As coffee drinkers, we had to make numerous rounds of espresso in the two Mokas (Italian coffee makers) provided before everyone had had their fill. We missed our American coffee maker.
Surrounding Area:
Gorgeous rolling hills and wonderful views. Beautiful pathways, landscaping and outdoor seating areas. Loved all the old stone buildings. Nice dogs and resident kitties. Friendly staff. We did like being close to San Casciano too. That worked out well since we spent many long days sightseeing and wanted to have someplace close to go to dinner. San Casciano is a beautiful, little town that had a variety of restaurants to choose from, which we appreciated. We also liked that they had a grocery store there called the Coop. We went there several times to get breakfast foods and lunch-type snacks.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino was the closest town and you could walk to it, however it was at the bottom of the hill and about 2 miles from the Castle. If you walked down, you had to walk up and I wouldn't recommend that at night. While Bargino was a very small town, it did have one restaurant there that was open for dinner. It was a fish/seafood restaurant and the food and service were great!
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a camera and your clothes and the rest you can get there. With the Coop being so close, groceries were accessible, if you had a car. We bought laundry soap, coffee and all the food we needed.
Directions:
We loved that you provided the GPS coordinates, so we did not have to map it out. Can't tell you if the instructions were good or bad. There was a GPS unit in our car and that helped a ton as we explored Tuscany, including Florence and a variety of the surrounding towns.
Check In Out:
All excellent. Loved the staff there. They spoke English well and were very helpful if we had questions.
