About The Experience

Sample Old-World flavor in the Chianti, including an historic 9th century castle—once home to Machiavelli—and its surrounding hamlet. Choose an apartment in one of the village farmhouses, parsonage, or in the castle itself. Spend your time strolling about the hamlet and taking in the magnificent views, or take day trips throughout Tuscany, including Lucca, Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, and Volterra.

Location Description

The former home of one of Renaissance Italy's leading figures, this castle and its surrounding hamlet enjoy a hilltop location in the heart of the Chianti. The nearest towns are Montefiridolfi and Bargino. The nearest food market is about 2 km away. Additional shops, banks and a post office can be found in San Casciano.

Nearby Attractions: Be sure to experience the wines produced by the estate in their weekly wine tastings. Further afield, there are many other opportunities for wine tasting: La Sala Winery (San Casciano), Il Solatione Winery (Mercatale Val di Pesa), Cennatoio Winery and Villa Cafaggio Winery (Panzano). In Florence, explore Bargello and the Opera del Duomo which house two of the greatest collections of sculptures in the world. Along with the top museums like Uffizi, Galleria dell'Accademia, and Museo di Palazzo Vecchio, be sure to visit the Archeological Museum, the Museum of the History of Science and the Museo Stibbert, which has a famous collection of armor.

Interior Description
(119 m2/1,281 ft2)

Ground Floor: This traditional Tuscan farmhouse has plenty of space and all the amenities. The living room, complete with two couches (one of them a sofa-bed) and Kilim rugs, sports a beautiful open-beam ceiling and other antique furniture. Exposed stone walls lead into a dining room with a table for four. In one corner an old circular staircase leads up to the first floor. Beyond the dining room is a kitchen, decorated in antique blue and white terra-cotta tiles and equipped with an Italian coffee machine. Here is everything you need to prepare your own authentic Italian cuisine—including the modern convenience of a dishwasher! There is also a smaller table for informal meals. Step outside the kitchen door and prepare an open-air meal with the terra cotta and stone barbeque; eat outside at the provided table and chairs.

First Floor: Upstairs, spend a cozy evening in the second living room (entrance hall), warming yourself at the fireplace or curling up with a book on the daybed (suitable for sleeping one). On one side of the living room is a bathroom and bedroom with a queen-size bed. On the opposite side is another bedroom, this one with two twin-beds. Bathrooms are located off of the dining room on the ground floor and next to the double bedroom (bed is queen-sized) on the first floor (accessible from the upstairs living room and double bedroom). Each is equipped with a toilet, bidet, shower, and sink.

Customer Reviews

We so enjoyed our stay at the Machiavelli villa. The staff was very accommodating.
Enjoyed Most:
The views and the villa itself was most comfortable
Surrounding Area:
We found the surrounding area just beautiful and easy to visit towns like Siena. The proximity to Florence was wonderful.
Nearby Events or Locales:
I believe it is Bargino and a car is needed but we preferred San Casciano. I needed to see a physician and was very happy visiting the local doctor in San Casciano. He was very caring and solved my health issue.
Tips or Restaurants:
We found that the villa was well stocked . Nello is a good restaurant but I would not hesitate to speak with Sarah or Christiana in the reception and get their recommendations.
We did not have a problem with directions. We used a GPS.
Check In Out:
We arrived late and had to wait a little until we were let into the villa but it was our problem because we knew that the office closed at 6 PM.

We had a very pleasant week over the Christmas holidays. The location so close to Florence and the main highway to everything else was quite convenient. The wine-tasting was the best I've ever done, and the castle tour was delightful and informative. We also had a marvelous 5 course dinner catered by Chef Matisse.
Enjoyed Most:
The fireplace room on the 2nd floor was wonderful. We put it to almost constant use and it was where we usually "hung out" as a family.
Enjoyed Least:
Because of the time of year we were there (late December, over Christmas holidays) it meant that we couldn't use the beautiful outdoor spaces.
Surrounding Area:
The surrounding countryside was beautiful, so typical of Tuscany, and so easy to get to, especially once you mastered the drive up and down the hill.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino was close, but not easily walkable especially in the colder weather. San Casciano, a few miles further away, was delightful.
Tips or Restaurants:
We very much enjoyed the local restaurant in Bargino, and its related little market. You don't need to bring anything, but you will want to make a trip to the grocery store one of the first things you do on arrival (or bring a few staples with you). We also recommend buying the estate's wine on arrival, (and throughout the week too.) Breakfast our first morning at the estate was excellent and a very good value.
Directions were very good, although we used GPS. Specific directions from car rental areas near Firenze train station would be helpful, as getting out of the city was the most difficult part.
Check In Out:
Staff was very helpful.

Magical! We loved the villa. It was everything I hoped Tuscany to be.
Enjoyed Most:
The location and the amazing views. Wonderful staff and great pool. We loved starting our day with coffee and ending it with wine overlooking the Vale and vineyards below.
Enjoyed Least:
I wish the castle would have been available to guests more frequently than just the Wednesday night wine tasting. We could never take advantage of it. The location up that steep hill made walking into the nearest town impossible. Window screens would be an asset!
Surrounding Area:
All the lovely vineyards and hill towns. San Casciano was a great town and we got to know the bus route from there to Florence very well.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino. Not walkable for us due to the steep hill.
Tips or Restaurants:
We arranged for a personal chef through RentVillas, Mattisse, to give us two cooking lessons at the villa. It was so much fun and he gave us two extraordinary meals. I would highly suggest that any "foodie" guests inquire for information on cooking classes.
We did use a GPS with mixed results. The directions were good but signage in Italy is limited and it's never easy to determine where you are.
Check In Out:
Very easy and the office staff was very helpful.
