AboutTheExperience
Looking to explore the Chianti region of Tuscany with all the comforts of home—and more? This accommodation in a Tuscany villa has it all, from a huge swimming pool to sprawling grounds and all the amenities indoors. How is this possible? One of the owners—with whom you'll share the property—is originally American, and she's furnished this holiday villa in Tuscany to American tastes. So relax! Lounge at this Tuscany vacation villa, take a refreshing bike ride to nearby Certaldo (we highly recommend exploring the Pretorio Palace), or take a day trip to Florence and beyond!
LocationDescription
This Tuscany villa is located off of a paved, lightly traveled country road. A bus stop is only 200 meters away, and the nearest town is Certaldo, at 4 km, which can be reached by car. With a population of about 15,000, Certaldo has all the necessities combined with small-town charm. Pick up groceries or eat out in the modern section and spend the rest of your day exploring Certaldo Alta, the old medieval village. In July, you may find yourself in the midst of a lively Renaissance festival, complete with street artists, actors, musicians, and more. And don't forget to get your fill of medieval architecture! You can explore the Pretorio Palace or marvel at the profile Certaldo castle cuts across the sky. Like museums? Visit the house of Giovanni Boccaccio (author of the Decameron). Day trips will take you to San Gimignano, Siena, and Florence. For arriving, you may wish to fly into Pisa and take the train directly to Certaldo, where you can rent a car.

ExteriorDescription
(300,000 m2) Enter the estate of this historic 14th century villa via a private gate and find yourself in a garden filled with cypress, pine, and oak trees. A large shared swimming pool (16m x 6m, 0.8-2m deep) surrounded by terra cotta decking, while over 35 lemon trees release refreshing scents into the air. From the garden, you'll look towards the medieval town of San Gimignano. Although the estate is shared with the owners, you have a private 100 m2 yard with garden furniture and a barbeque; all very private. You will also have a 60 m2 courtyard with lemon trees and a covered terrace overlooking vineyards and the valley. Also on the estate you will find several barns (one under renovation in 2006), and an unused underground wine cellar. Naturally, there is also private parking. One third of the remaining land is a nature reserve—a wooded area inhabited by wild pheasants, rabbits, boar, and hedgehogs. Another part of the estate is used for olive tree cultivation, and there is also a resident horse that enjoys free grazing around an ancient Roman fresh water spring.

Customer Reviews
Overall:
We would recommend this beautiful villa to others wishing to have a comfortable base for exploring Tuscany. The villa itself was spacious, well-furnished, and the location was excellent for sightseeing. Our hostess Elizabeth was gracious and eager to help us. Her son, Henry, 10 years old, joined us for pool time on a few occasions and he taught us some Italian words and pool games.
Enjoyed Most:
The kitchen was well equipped and we enjoyed the large swimming pool that was available for our use. The views from the villa out onto the adjacent vineyard were beautiful. One morning we awoke to a beautiful Tuscan sunrise, and looked out to see a number of hot air balloons drifting across the nearby fields - what a sight! The internet connectivity at the villa was good although a bit slow, but that is to be expected. The villa has a computer with internet and printer-scanner that we used, and it also has a wireless access point that we were able to use with the computer we brought with us. Cellular signals at the villa were strong.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The villa itself was a bit difficult to find. This was because we had directions to the villa only from one direction - and we were coming from a different direction. When we had trouble, we called the property owner and she drove a few miles to meet us and usher us in.
Surrounding Area:
From this base we found it easy to make day-trips to Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, and of course the town of Certaldo which was just down the road. All of these were fantastic places to visit, and getting there via our rental car or local train was simple.
Tips or Restaurants:
Other reviews had warned us of abundant mosquitoes but we found the problem to be small. We got a few bites but nothing serious.
The restaurants in Certaldo were somewhat limited, but certainly enough options for our one-week stay. We particularly enjoyed shopping at the local stores and then cooking for ourselves. The local vegetables, especially tomatoes, were excellent quality. We also found some great fresh fruit by visiting Certaldo's open-air market. We had both a cooking lesson, and an at-home dinner, prepared by local cooking instructor Giuseppina and would recommend her to others. Her cooking classes are held in her studio in Certaldo Alto, within the ancient hill town fort that overlooks the river valley - just a fantastic venue!

Overall:
It was fantastic. Elizabeth has everything you will need for a fantastic stay.
Enjoyed Most:
The kitchen was unbelievable. So much space and everything you wanted was there!
Unpleasant Surprises:
Nothing
Surrounding Area:
The villa is so close to a lot of little villages and only 15 mins. to the Florence - Siena highway.
Tips or Restaurants:
Certaldo Alto has 2 great restaurants, San Gimignano is great too, just a little further away.
Directions:
We used the written directions with no problem.
Check In Out:
Elizabeth informed us of the workings of the villa and the surrounding area at check-in and the day before check out she came by to see how we had enjoyed our stay.

Overall:
Fantastic. We had a wonderful time, beautiful property, owner very helpful, happy to do anything for us. Having dinner prepared on our first night there was wonderful and we did it again later in the week.
Enjoyed Most:
The villa itself was just glorious, welcoming and very comfortable for three couples. Covered porch with table for 6 perfect for any rainy times. The location to get to so many hill towns is a real plus.
Unpleasant Surprises:
That it wasn't walkable to a town. BUT we wouldn't have had the peaceful countryside to look at if it were closer to a town.
Surrounding Area:
We were so close to so many ancient towns to enjoy within an easy ride.
Tips or Restaurants:
We were happy we brought a few plastic bags for the kitchen, but there was nothing that the villa needed.
Directions:
We did not use a GPS and did fine without it
