About The Experience
Watch breathtaking sunsets from the private terrace of this vacation rental in Tuscany, or travel just a few steps outside your front door to the center piazza of Monterchi . This Tuscany villa is even part of history, as the walls of the garden are actually medieval remains from a 16th century castle. Holidays in Tuscany are great for family getaways, especially when you have your own private swimming pool to lounge around and are in day trip distance to fabulous cities like Arezzo and Siena.
Location Description

This property is ideally located in the center of Monterchi, a medieval town that was dedicated to Hercules during the Roman times. Dating back to the year 1095, Monterchi has shops, restaurants, markets, a bank, post office, and several interesting churches. Perhaps the town is most famous for Piero della Francesca’s extraordinary fresco, the Madonna del Parto, painted in 1459 and now displayed in a primary school, also considered a museum. During the summer months, the museum hosts open-air concerts of classical music every Wednesday night on the gardens. Also in Monterchi is a Polenta Festival held every September where visitors can taste local recipes and learn about local traditions. Arezzo, the charming town used as the backdrop for Roberto Benigni's "Life is Beautiful," is about a half an hour drive away and is perfect for a day trip. Once one of the most important Etruscan cities, today Arezzo is beautiful for an array of architecture spanning centuries, from Etruscan ruins to the Roman amphitheatre and the Medici Fortress. The first weekend of each month brings a popular antique fair, while annually there is a festival called "Joust of the Saracens," where all of the citizens dress in medieval attire and knights representing each part of the city charge at a target representing a Saracen king. The area is also well situated for day trips throughout Tuscany to places such as Cortona, Perugia, and Florence.

Nearby Attractions: Monterchi (shops, restaurants, markets, bank, post office, museum, annual festival), Sansepolcro (shops, markets, restaurants, Museo Civico, church of San Francesco, Duomo), Arezzo (Etruscan ruins, Roman amphitheater, Medici Fortress, antique fairs, annual festivals), Cortona, Perugia, Siena.

Customer Reviews

Overall:
Wonderful! The property owner, Donatella, was so welcoming and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Enjoyed Most:
The view is unbelievable. Also, it is located in a small village so you really get to experience the locals.
Enjoyed Least:
The kitchen is very small, but we didn't do much cooking so it was fine for us. We did have a chef come in for two nights and it could accommodate her needs.
Surrounding Area:
The property is at the top of the small town with a fantastic view. You can walk into the village where there are 2 great restaurants, a pottery shop, grocer and everyone is very friendly and helpful. There is a book at the property that lists everything you will need, including some recommended day trips.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Monterchi. Yes.
Tips or Restaurants:
The house was pretty well-equipped. We had to buy shampoo and soap. We also brought portable radio to play our iPod at the pool. We hired a chef through RentVillas, Cinzia Malgeri, and she was fantastic!
Directions:
We did use a GPS and had no issues finding the property. There is the new part of the town and old part where the property is located. It's at the very top so you can't miss it!
Check In Out:
No. It was extremely easy. Donatella, the property owner, lives close by so she is very flexible to check you in/out as needed.

Lesley, September

Overall:
It was a wonderful place to stay. Very peaceful and the views were spectacular. The town was very pleasant.
Enjoyed Most:
The views and the garden. It was really helpful to have the Rentvillas book, Living Like a Local in Italy. It was so very useful in planning the trip as well as understanding the customs of the country.
Enjoyed Least:
The living room was a little small.
Surrounding Area:
The food was great wherever we went. Everyone was helpful even though we did not speak Italian.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Monterchi was right outside our door and we were able to get groceries and supplies in the village and below right outside of town.
Tips or Restaurants:
The restaurant right at the top of the village was the best.
Directions:
You need to know that the roads are very narrow up to the villa. We did not anticipate that. Also, there is a parking area and a walkway to the villa.

Rebecca, June

Overall:
From the first moment until the last fond look back at "our" villa, we had a wonderful experience. The owner was gracious and helpful and the maintenance of the property was excellent. We were three generations and each of us loved our stay.
Enjoyed Most:
The views and the outside pool area. The flowers were georgeous and the turtles made it even better. It was really helpful to have the Rentvillas book, Living Like a Local in Italy. It was so very useful in planning the trip as well as understanding the customs of the country.
Enjoyed Least:
We were a little disappointed in the size of the rooms, especially the kitchen, but we quickly adapted and settled right in.
Surrounding Area:
The people, the restaurants, the views, the fact that we could easily walk in different areas and discover things we had not previously seen.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We were all able to walk down to the New Monterchi where the banks, shops and most of all, everyone could get some gelato.
Tips or Restaurants:
We were pleasantly surprised that there were lots of provisions left by others, such as spices, olive oil and other staples. We did take toilet tissue although some was already there. I was glad to have taken a wash cloth. No need for beach towels as they were provided. The little restauranr right below the villa was perfect-a real find the first night we arrived-tired and hungry. People were delightful and food excellent.
Directions:
The directions were fine and we did have a GPS which we got before leaving home. Since we rented a car in Rome it was very helpful to have the spoken directions. We took a few wrong exits, but managed to get back on tract easily.
Check In Out:
It was very easy. We called from the road to let them know that we had been delayed and would arrive in about an hour. Our plane was delayed by 5 hours. Checking out was a breeze-maybe 10 or 15 minutes.

India, June
