LocationDescription
This Amalfi Coast rental villa is located in the middle of Positano, one of the loveliest and most characteristic towns on the peninsula-- so close to the water and so steep that it looks like it's about to tumble into the sea! Once a prosperous town in the 16th and 17th centuries, Positano had fallen on hard times by the 1800's; many of the inhabitants emigrated to the US, and Positano became just another "poor fishing village." It was, however, a fishing village filled with charm, and when John Steinbeck visited in the 1950's he wrote: "Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone." Others agreed, and today Positano is once again a glittering jewel of the Mediterranean. Just large enough to have "one of everything" (post office, beach, school, police station, and church), Positano is also well known for its numerous small clothing boutiques. Annually, it hosts several festivals and feasts, including the "Cartoons on the Bay Festival." Positano is also featured in the films "Only You" and "Under the Tuscan Sun." Visiting other Amalfi Coast locations is made easy by transportation via water or bus. Hydrofoils depart daily for Capri, Amalfi, Sorrento (train service to Naples), and Ischia. Blue SITA busses cost about 1-2 euros, depending on destination. Stops are marked with a blue and white SITA sign. The small internal bus (orange mini-bus) of Positano is marked by a brown FERMATA sign. Driving times are: Ravello to Amalfi, 15 minutes; Amalfi to Positano, 30 minutes; Positano to Sorrento, 35 minutes.

Overall:
We were in Positano for one month, so we really got the true flavor of living there. For as long as we stayed, we still didn't want to leave when the time came. Lots of very friendly people willing to help, and a generosity of spirit. The food everywhere was good, as well as the waiters, who were fun and very friendly. Lots of good memories.
Enjoyed Most:
The location, location, location! 70 steps up to Via Pasitea, which we referred to as the Upper Village. Many wonderful restaurants, shops, some service, such as the photo store, where the owner was always giving us tips and making photos CD's for us to share with friends. A wonderful grocery store and a couple of wine stores. The wonderful views, both from the villa and all up and down Via Pasitea.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The patio was not nicely appointed, as the furniture was sparse and uncomfortable. Also, the plantings needed care. We took care of the outside area and left it cleaner than when we arrived.
