AboutTheExperience

Overlooking the facade of San Gaetano church on the Piazza Antinori, this is one of our most elegant apartment accommodations in Florence. Enjoying a fantastically central location and helpful staff, your time in Florence will be wonderful whether you're inside your Florence holiday accommodation or out.

LocationDescription

This short term apartment in Florence is located in a palazzo on the elegant Piazza Antinori in the Duomo district. The palazzo dates back to the 14th Century, a time when the city was just beginning to expand beyond the Roman central nucleus. At that time, Via Tornabuoni and Piazza Antinori were side streets leading towards the Florence city limits. It was only in the mid-15th Century that the location around this apartment rental in Florence became the address for wealthy Florentines who bought and refurbished palaces to turn them into stately homes.
Pisa: 98 km
Siena: 70.4 km
Ponte Vecchio: within walking distance
Duomo: within walking distance
Piazza Santa Maria Novella: within walking distance

ExteriorDescription

Throughout the centuries the palazzo was remodeled extensively, acquiring its present form in the mid-18th century. In the shops nearby one can find a baker, butcher, green grocer, coffee and pastry shops, hairdresser, dry cleaner, and a plethora of excellent restaurants.

InteriorDescription

(130 m2) 2nd floor (with lift): This apartment has a spacious sitting room overlooking the façade of the church of San Gaetano. At night the church is beautifully floodlit, and the large, white marble Medici crest (from which the apartment takes its name) is visible directly opposite the sitting room, creating a stunning effect. The apartment features wood floors, high ceilings and lovely paintings of different types of birds. One step from the landing leads into a large rectangular hall, painted in a soft peach tone. The antique furniture and carpets and the ornamental brass wall lamps all contribute to an air of quiet elegance and luxury. To the right of the entrance is the first bedroom with twin beds (can be made into queen bed on request). The room is decorated in soft ocher and terracotta, with delightful prints on the walls and a pretty and spacious painted wardrobe in one corner. Opposite the entrance is a large blue-tiled bathroom with tub and hand-held shower. The hallway leads to the very large sitting room, with its impressive view over the Church of San Gaetano. The color palette is a mixture of soft greens, spicy reds, and rusts. Two sofas and two large arm chairs create a cozy corner, with side tables and beautifully painted chinoiserie panels. Beautiful period prints of Medici Villas adorn the walls. Off of the living room is the small but fully equipped kitchen; leading into the kitchen is a small antechamber with a balcony window looking out onto the church. Behind the sitting room is the double bedroom (queen bed or two twin beds on request) decorated in mint green. The room has an elegant en suite bathroom in cream tiles and a tub and hand held shower.

Questions and Answers From Our Clients

(Click the question to view the answer)
Q: the kitchen is not pictured in the detail photos. was it adequate to prepare an evening meal?

A: Stephen, Palazzo Antinori is fabulous - spacious, elegant, great light and well appointed. The kitchen is very easy to cook in and well outfitted. I will say that I was there for a month and planned to cook alot, but the nearby restaurants were so good that I dined out most of the time.

Q: due to the city location, did you find the apartment noisy?

A: We used the front bedroom(street side) and I don't remember the noise bothering us at all. My children slept in the back bedroom. This is a really lovely apartment and the location is fantastic. We would stay there again in a heartbeat!

ALL OF IT great, including the restaurants nearby.

    Enjoyed Most:
    Location.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
The water pressure in the bathrooms and the sporadic hot water.
    Surrounding Area:
Everything! We love the shopping and the restaurants.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
Fiesole, it is a short taxi ride. We also love Forte de Marmii which is on the coast. That is only 1 12 hours on the bus. They have cute hotels and the town comes alive at night. Easyjet now has inexpensive flights to Paris from Pisa so we flew to Paris and spent 5 days there and had the most fabulous time.
    Tips or Restaurants:
I highly recommend having dinner at the Villa San Michele in Fiesole. It is so beautiful and so romantic. The view of Florence from there is amazing. I highly recommend going in the Spring and not in the summer when it is so terribly hot.

    Overall:
Wonderfully helpful staff who work on the premises. Good availability in emergencies by phone. Excellent security.
    Enjoyed Most:
Location was excellent for getting around on foot or by bus. The old Palazzo feel and grandness of the property was delightful. The place was neat and clean. Kitchen, though a bit small, was well appointed and adequate for our needs. Beds were comfortable. Enough room for a party.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
Location in the heart of the old district was noisy. The interior bedroom was quiet, but the street-side rooms experienced an urban symphony of buses, scooters, street sweepers and cabs. You had to close all windows to drown out the street sounds. Most older places use tankless hot water systems. They take a while to get cooking, and don't expect long showers.
    Surrounding Area:
600 years of history, the Uffizzi Gallery, the Duomo, exquisite hill towns, the Medici Chapels, the Central Market, the Straw Market, the food, the wine..........This is Florence, Italy, what's not to like!!
    Nearby Events or Locales:
Fiesole is just outside the city, a 15-minute city bus ride. The big red London-style city tour bus is actually a great opportunity to get your bearings and see the city. It provides an audio program with personal headset in multiple languages and allows unlimited on and off for 24 hours. Other tours are easily available for a myriad of towns within an hour and a half to visit Siena, Pisa, San Gimignano, Montalcino, Lucca, Volterra etc.
    Tips or Restaurants:
Restaurants Osteria di Giovanni - wonderful - and i Latini. Try to avoid the tourist hot spots and tourist menus in English. Ask a local where his favorites are or Rick Steves tour book gave candid ratings. Driving? Buy a local, good quality road atlas. Walking? Any of the Street-Wise series pocket maps are excellent. In Florence, go immediately to one of the local tourist info offices near S. Maria Novella or on Via Cavour, or others and get a sheet indicating open-close times for all the attractions. You cannot rely on any tour book published before yesterday! They will also have info on visiting exhibits and music etc. If you intend to cook, bring a bit of your own spices etc., Zip-Lock bags in various sizes, Saran Wrap. Supermarkets in the center are rare and not conveniently located for the traveler. The Central Market, while glorious, doesn't have that sort of thing.
    Directions:
If you rent a car, as I did, be aware YOU CANNOT DRIVE IN THE HISTORIC CENTER. Only special permits allow this for local residents. Except for day trips out of town, the car is an expensive, inconvenient waste. in retrospect, I would have planned my day trips in sequence and rented the car for two or three days only.
