About The Experience

Just across the river from the Uffizi Gallery and two blocks from the Pitti Palace, this charming and comfortable accommodation in Florence is a favorite of our clients. On the south side of the river, the area around this rental apartment in Florence enjoys the benefits of a less-crowded residential area combined with close proximity to Florence's major sights.

Location Description

The palazzo housing this Florence apartment is situated on the south side of the Arno River in the Oltrarno district of Florence. On one side, the accommodation in Florence overlooks the Arno and the Uffizi Gallery, and on the other side, the via de'Bardi. In the neighborhood you'll find food shops, clothing stores, and restaurants.

Nearby Attractions: The Otrarno is the area of Florence that is south of the Arno River. While it contains some of the most famous and characteristic Renaissance buildings, it is also a quarter known for authentic flavor. Here you will find the Santo Spirito Church designed by Brunelleschi, the Santa Maria del Carmine Church with its famous Brancacci Chapel containing Masaccio’s exquisite frescoes, and the Palazzo Pitti. There are magnificent views of Florence from the Forte Belvedere and Piazzale Michelangelo, a prime destination for a gelato or glass of wine while watching the sunset. For those who like quirky, a visit to La Specola Museum, with wax anatomical models from the 18th century, is sure to fascinate. In addition to all of this, the quarter has many fine restaurants and shops, as well as an open-air market in the Piazza Santo Spirito.

Exterior Description

This palazzo dates back to the 15th century, when the banks of the Arno River were flanked by palazzi (palaces) belonging to patrician families such as the Bardis. The edifice was modified over the centuries until the mid-19th century, when a famous architect, Enrico Poggi, endeavored to transform Florence into a capital city. He modeled the palazzo after the Lungarno Torrigiani area in order to maintain the classical renaissance color palette of cream plaster and gray “pietra serena” stone, which is visible in so many buildings throughout the city. A daytime doorman is available and each apartment is made secure with a bell and a buzzer.

Customer Reviews

I would say it was good - the building is lovely, the apartment is very nice and certainly just fine for two people. It was well-kept, spotless, the agent, Laura, and the doorman, Mauro were terrific and very helpful.
Enjoyed Most:
I thought the location was wonderful and the building and the apartment were very charming.
Enjoyed Least:
I least liked the noise - the apartment faces the back of the building and the street below has a lot of traffic. The small couch in the apartment is really uncomfortable and basically not usable. There are lots of mosquitoes!
Surrounding Area:
The area us wonderful - being in the Oltrarno is much less crowded and "touristy" than the other side of the river. The immediate area, San Niccolo, is great - convenient to everything, yet quiet, and with some great restaurants.
Tips or Restaurants:
I would suggest bringing a lot of mosquito/bug repellant. All of the restaurants on the helpful brochure in the apartment were great - I would recommend all of them.

Very good. The apartment had everything we needed.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, well appointed apartment, nearby shops and restaurant, customer support. SKY TV with multiple news outlets was nice. Good security with doorman.
Enjoyed Least:
The couch. Near the end of stay the fan and elevator both conked out. The air conditioner worked, but it's loud. Stove heats living room which is not good during a heat wave. There's some traffic noise, but it dies down late nights. Editor's Note: The fan and elevator were repaired.
Surrounding Area:
Great fruit-vegetable store, bakery, and multiple restaurants nearby.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Florence is right outside the door.
Tips or Restaurants:
In addition to some good restaurants listed before by others, we really enjoyed Casalingua, located just off Plaza San Spirito. We did not think Bordino was as good as expected based on other recommendations. Negroni has free, good snacks with purchase of drink after 7:00 pm. Consider mosquito repellent.
Check In Out:
Laura and Doorman were great.

Great experience. Florence is beautiful, and the inhabitants are surprisingly friendly.
Enjoyed Most:
Location. Location. Location. Just across the Arno from the Uffizi. 2 minute walk to Ponte Vecchio.
Enjoyed Least:
A bit noisy unsurprisingly!. Couch and beds uncomfortable.
Surrounding Area:
What's not to like? Florence is a beautiful city, full of art and food! It was great to be so close to all of the action.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring ear plugs if you aren't a sound sleeper, but that's the case for any apartment this close to the city center. If you plan to see several museums, look into getting a "Friends of the Uffizi" membership.
Check In Out:
If you are making any connections, be prepared to call if you will be late. I missed a connection in London and arrived 5 hours late. The local managers were very flexible, but only because I called from London.
