You'll find yourself in the heart of the Chianti, surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills, where you can relax and enjoy the views or discover authentic Italian wineries. Cook meals for yourself or go out—you have the freedom and the space to choose what you want to do from this villa to rent in Tuscany.

LocationDescription

This Tuscany vacation rental is located just a few kilometers from Greve in Chianti, in a very convenient position for taking day trips to Florence and Siena. Although Greve is the nearest town, you won't feel like you're in the middle of nowhere-- just across and down the road you will find a bus stop, a grocery, and a fantastic restaurant! Greve in Chianti is a little town with a cute little market square lined with porticos, the oldest part of the city from when it operated as a stopping place between Florence and Siena. It also has an art museum in the former convent of San Francesco. The area surrounding Greve is littered with small little villages, great for exploration, and there are also numerous "castellos" in the countryside that host wine tasting. Of course you will also want to take day trips into Florence (it is easy to catch the bus in Greve), where you'll marvel at the Statue of David, peruse ancient works of art in the Uffizi, and window-shop along the Ponte Vecchio. And then there's Siena, a wonderfully preserved example of the Tuscan middle ages. Filled with Gothic palaces, churches, and museums, it is also famed for its annual bareback horse race, held on August 16.

Q: How long did it take to drive from the Pisa airport to the villa, and how difficult was the drive? Thanks in advance!

A: We drove up from Rome to the villa. However, we did drive to Pisa for the day. It was a very easy drive - all highway - that took about 2 1/2 hours. It was Easter Sunday and there was a lot of traffic and some slow spots, but the drive was still very easy. P.S. We absolutely loved the villa and the restaurant across the street. We have many fond memories of our stay. The countryside is beautiful.

    Customer Reviews

    Overall:
This was a lovely, gracious villa, and I was thrilled when I first saw it. It was perfect for our group and far exceeded our expectations. Graziella, the woman in the village who helped out with the cleaning and linens, was very helpful and is extremely patient with non-Italian speaking clients.
    Enjoyed Most:
The location and the view were spectacular! The villa was definitely off the beaten path but not so far away that it was a chore to get anywhere. The set-up of the villa was perfect for a large group of people, because each level provided its own bathrooms and enough privacy for everyone. It was also lovely and cool up in the hills, as compared to the heat in the cities and valleys.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
The kitchen appliances. The kitchen itself is lovely - it's typical of an old farmhouse. Our criticism, and we're really having to dig to find a criticism because we enjoyed our stay so much! is that the oven didn't work very well and the dishwasher and fridge were not the greatest. With updated appliances this room would be spectacular.
    Surrounding Area:
The friendliness of the locals, the proximity of the vineyards and olive groves, the lovely little towns and villages nearby, the truly amazing views.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
Greve was a 10 to 15 minute drive from the villa. It is a wonderful town. The butcher shop is a true delight for those who are interested, and the bakery-forno should not be missed. Oh, and there are two cheese-deli type shops that are fantastic. Other shops around the town square are full of locally made souvenirs, and the restaurants are good too. There are also a number of wine shops that are fun, particularly the wine shop in the basement alongside the river where you can buy a tasting card and try out all kinds of the best local wine.
    Tips or Restaurants:
The restaurant across the street is great, and they're very friendly. Our best find, however, was in the village of Volpaia, about a 10-15 minute drive from the villa. If you continue up the hill from Lamole follow the road signs; the road turns to gravel and is dusty, but the trip is well worth it. You can find it easily with a good map too. There is a restaurant there run by a couple immediately to the right of the Volpaia wine tasting and souvenir shop in the main square. The food is some of the best we had in Italy, and the most reasonably priced. Let them chose your antipasti - it's spectacular.
    Directions:
Although they may seem odd, the directions are exactly right. Just keep going up the road and you'll get there. Once you get to the village of Lamole, the villa is the first main building on the right, just past the restaurant with the green and white awnings.

    Enjoyed Most:
The view from the porch was awesome. Plenty of space for 8 people.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
It would have been nice to have a change of towels mid-week. The washing machine was a big disappointment. Hard to use and it was hard on the clothes. We had all traveled prior to arriving at Lamole and were counting on the washing machine.
    Surrounding Area:
Lamole is a cute little area up the hill from Greve. It has a very nice restaurant across the street from the villa, which was nice to have so we didn't have to drive up and down the windy road at night. Greve is a delightful town with a square of great stores and reataurants. Convenient to take the bus to Florence from there.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
Greve was the nearest town - about a 20 minute car ride to get there.
    Tips or Restaurants:
It would be difficult to have more than 8, unless some were children. Allow time to enjoy the small towns of Tuscany and limit the days of driving to the more well-known touristy towns like Florence and Siena. Driving is slow in Tuscany and parking is a problem in the cities. Take the bus to Florence!
    Directions:
Mention in the directions that the villa is across the street from the Lamole restaurant. That would make it much easier to find.
    Check In Out:
Have the manager go over things like where the silverware is. Eight of us could not find it! It was in a drawer in the kitchen table, but we did not see the drawer and looked every where else for the silverware!

    Enjoyed Most:
The views were spectacular and walking around the property was enjoyable.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
The beds - actually the mattresses - were not good in all the bedrooms. A suggestion for new mattresses would be great!
    Surrounding Area:
We loved the area and visited all the Tuscan towns. The winery up the street was delightful and the Restaurant Lamole was excellent.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
Lamole was the only one within walking distance, otherwise you had to get in the car. Remember, there were over 82 twists and turns on the road to Lamole
    Tips or Restaurants:
Bring an air mattress and extra towels. We cooked in many evenings. The laundry facility was adequate once you learned how to use it.
    Check In Out:
The check out time of 9:00am is a bit early, since you can not get in until between 5:00-8:00pm.
