AboutTheExperience

Le Mas de Valerie offers a quiet and charming French Riviera experience, from the discovery of the small villages nearby, to the beautiful countryside where famous artists such as Matisse, Picasso, Braque and others chose to spend part of their life. While Le Mas de Valerie is located just 5 km from Grasse, the world famous capital of perfumes, it also enjoys easy access to Cannes, Nice, St Paul de Vence, and Antibes, and even allows daytrips to Italy. If comfort, charm, and relaxation are your requirements, Le Mas de Valerie is the French Riviera villa rental where you can combine cultural activities, days by the pool and an authentic experience of the South of France.

LocationDescription

The villa is located three kilometers from the small village of Peymeinade. In the heart of Peymeinade you'll find the Church St. Roch surrounded by beautiful 18th century houses. While there are various musical and theatrical events held throughout the year, there are also regular outdoor markets and antique fairs. The town of Grasse is larger and is located only five kilometers from the villa. In addition to restaurants, cafes, shops, markets, and a post office, Grasse is known for being the center of the French perfume industry and has several perfumeries with a museum and tours. The Jasmine Festival is held every August and has grown considerably since becoming a tradition in 1946. Today there are floats, fireworks, live music, and street performers. For some of the most beautiful beaches of the French Riviera, make sure to take day trips to Cannes, Antibes, and Nice.

Customer Reviews

Enjoyed Most:
It is a well-designed, attractive house that contains quality furnishings. The owner was an extremely gracious woman who was most generous in supplying basic provisions milk, champagne, bread, orange juice, butter, etc. There were ample towels and toilet paper.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The owner, who met us on our arrival, didn't speak English. After a long travel day, it was tiring to try to understand her instructions about the washer, dryer, and dishwasher, etc. I hope that the owner will supply written instruction in English for the house. The house is on a road that carries occasional late at night.
Surrounding Area:
We didn't spend time in Peymeinade or in Grasse. The location was a reasoinably affordable place to stay while we explored the Cote d'Azur and some of the hill towns; however, the traffic around Grasse made travel time-consuming.
Tips or Restaurants:
Gourmet Tables Treasures of Provence, by Jacques Gantie, is an invaluable guide to restaurants with detailed commentaries and ratings and lists of craftsmen, vendors, and growers.

Overall:
We would stay there again in a heartbeat--the location and property were just outstanding.
Enjoyed Most:
The property was beautifully maintained and pretty. There was ample room for all of us seven and the sitting areas were lovely. The pool was perfect and surrounded by flowers. The kitchen was a dream and well equipped..Loved it!!! And the landlady was absolutely delightful..She went out of her way to make it sparkle for us.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The bathrooms were tricky to negotiate, but adequate. As the one bathroom was not in the same room as the shower and sink, one had to go down a level to get to the commode or up a level if one was in the lower bedroom.
Surrounding Area:
Everything--the day trips to the hills or coast were all manageable and worthwhile. There is something for everyone really--all age groups. Cabris is special--we enjoyed the beach at Cagnes sur Mer--it was pebbly but more family oriented than the ones around St. Tropez. People were clothed!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Grasse was quite close and fun to explore. You could walk to a bread store and farm stand, but on a main road--so best to negotiate everything by car
Tips or Restaurants:
Chantegrille was excellent and close and the pizza place near there was also good for take out. There are two grocery stores--Intermarche and Champion--and the bookstore near Champion sells English books and the Herald Tribune as well as postcards. The post office is right there too.

Overall:
Lovely home to return to after day of sightseeing. We did not have children with us, but it would be a comfortable, easy place for a family to bring who can negotiate stairs and be respectful of a lovely home.
Enjoyed Most:
Quiet, peaceful setting. House and grounds are very well maintained. The owner is a lovely, friendly woman and very pleasant to deal with.
Unpleasant Surprises:
You need to drive everywhere. Feels like living in a nice suburb rather than in a village. Need to get used to all the details of the locks and security system on the house and gate. Not really a problem - just good to know in advance that it's part of the experience of coming and going.
Surrounding Area:
Small villages in the mountains and by the coast are wonderful. The Maeght Foundation in St. Paul and other small museums were quite interesting. Valbonne, Grimaud, Seillons and Tourette-sur-Loup were our favorites but many others worth seeing. Some towns more touristy and well traveled than others. It's essential that someone be comfortable with driving on small, winding, precipitous roads.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Peymienade is the nearest small town. Not really worth visiting except for buying food or other essentials. No reason to walk there. It would mostly be along a busy road.
Tips or Restaurants:
Chantigrille up the road away from Peymeinade is a lovely family run restaurant worth a trip. Le Cadran Solaire in Valbonne down a little alley is also family run with intimate atmosphere and delicious, local food. Bachanallas in Tourette just got a star.
