AboutTheExperience

This accommodation in a villa in Tuscany is very family friendly, surrounded by characteristic little towns and rolling Tuscany countryside. Take a day trip to Florence, go wine tasting, or just enjoy relaxing by the pool at this vacation rental in Tuscany.

LocationDescription

The nearest town to this apartment is Panzano, a charming little village that began as a medieval castle, and still retains some of the walls and towers even today. It is notable for a number of local restaurants that are simply divine. Every Sunday morning (until 1 pm) a market is held on the main square, so you'll be able to get your flowers, vegetables, fruit, meat, cheese, and everything else for the week! There are also some very unique festivals and events throughout the year in the area (see nearby attractions, below). This is a great place to eat out and to relax while enjoying local life. Greve in Chianti, just a few minutes' drive away, is a little town with a cute market square lined with porticos and shops, the oldest part of the city from the time when it operated as a stopping place between Florence and Siena. The former convent of San Francesco also hosts and art museum... And don't miss Saturday market in the square! The area surrounding Greve is dotted with little medieval villages, great for exploration, and there are also numerous "castellos" in the countryside that host wine tasting. Florence and Siena are both easily accessible from this apartment in Tuscany, a great way to hit both of these fantastic destinations.

    Overall:
The short answer is that I loved Piccola Torre 1 and would return in a heartbeat. The place was huge. A funny story sums it up well. We got slightly lost, even though the directions were excellent. Frederica drove to Panzano to escort us to the villa. When we got there, my "navigator" told me with a smile he had seen the place but was convinced there was "no way it was the place we got", because it was so lovely.
    Enjoyed Most:
We had spent the previous days in Rome and Venice. That peace and quiet were a stunning contrast. The view was gorgeous. The villa itself was beautiful.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
I can honestly say that I can think of nothing that I disliked.
    Surrounding Area:
Panzano is on the Chianti Road, SR 222, which goes from Florence south though Siena. If you fear getting lost in Tuscany, the several interesting destinations right on the Chianti Road.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
Panzano is a few kilometers from the villa. It's a do-able walk, though you probably don't want to be carrying groceries back. The drive is about 4-5 minutes.
    Tips or Restaurants:
I highly recommend that you visit one of the restaurants run by Dario Cecchini, the local butcher. He's famous through Italy. We had a 10 course meal at Solociccia, plus bottled water, wine, Italian Military Liquors, and coffee , all for 30 Euros per person. It's a fixed menu with 6 different meat dishes and with seating at four tables which seat 10-14 people. It's a great opportunity to meet people. They serve Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7 and 9 PM and Sunday at 1 PM. We had the 9:00 seating and there was literally a party in the street beforehand as Dario and some of his workers walked around with stacks of glasses handing out wine to the people waiting for their seating. It was the best meal we had in Italy, by far. And go to his butcher shop across the street from Solociccia, Antica Macelleria, even if you don't get any meat. It's great local color and he's extremely cordial.

    Overall:
I would recommend this villa it to anyone - it is especially family friendly with a nice sized pool that can actually be used to swim laps. The map and info in the Rentvillas "little white book" was excellent. We tried many of the sites, excursions, and restaurants....all were super choices.
    Enjoyed Most:
The property was central to most of the sites we wanted to visit - Castellina in Chianti, Siena, Florence, San Gimignano, etc. As it was on the top of a hill, we always benefited from the breeze - a plus on hot summer days! When we arrived, it was spotless and the keyholder explained everything to our satisfaction.
    Surrounding Area:
It was absolutely beautiful and relaxing. The people in the surrounding towns are extremely friendly and patient with those who speak very little italian. They are also quite ready to help you learn the words you need.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
Panzano is about 4 kilometres away - half of it uphill most of it in the first kilometre when you leave the villa. It is a great walk for exercise and can be done on foot in about 40 to 45 minutes. The walk back always seemed easier!
    Tips or Restaurants:
If at all possible, bring a knife that cuts for food preparation. I would also bring mosquito netting for the windows. My two companions were immune to the mosquitoes but I, for an unknown reason, was positively assaulted by them - but only on the first two nights. The best coffee and gelato is found in the bar Caffe Curva in the main piazza in Panzano. Vescovino is an excellent restaurant, although some may consider it pricy - try the eggplant appetizer!
