AboutTheExperience
Although situated on a large estate with other luxury villa rentals, renting this villa in Tuscany provides a house that is unique for its private setting and beautiful views. The estate's vast private land borders a National Park, so it is not uncommon to spy deer, pheasants, and other wild game. Beautifully landscaped with native flora, the private grounds around this villa rental in Tuscany, Italy, include a lovely swimming pool surrounded by comfortable lounge chairs. It is an ideal spot to enjoy peace, quiet, and spectacular views of the Tuscan countryside. Conveniently located in Southern Tuscany, it is possible to take day trips to Montepulciano, Montalcino, Pienza, and Cortona, as well as destinations in Umbria, such as Perugia, Orvieto, and Todi. ExteriorDescription
(2000 acres) An 11th century abbey is the focal point of this estate. There are eleven independent, Tuscan luxury villa rentals decorated in a similar minimalist, architectural style. Each villa is separate and private from other structures, and each has a wonderful view. Casa Il Cinghiale is a beautifully restored 16th Century stone farmhouse. It is located on the very top of a hill overlooking the valley, the estate's lake, and the Cetona Mountain. The back of the house borders the woods, providing coolness in the summer and immediate access to three different hiking trails. The private swimming pool is located near the house and is surrounded by trees and greenery.

Customer Reviews
Overall:
The staff was fabulous and couldn't have been more helpful. The girls that helped us cook were worth their weight in gold.
Enjoyed Most:
The beauty, the spacious quarters, the country feeling.
Unpleasant Surprises:
Someone should have told us that the biggest bug threat was not mosquitoes...it was scorpions. The wildlife was not deer, but wild boars.
Tips or Restaurants:
Tell people that the roads are dirt and that walking between villas at night might put you face to face with the local boar.

Enjoyed Most:
The remote location, the tremendous view, the flora and fauna, and the helpfulness of the staff. They were incredibly responsive and helpful and even assisted us in getting medical attention when a member of our group developed a throat infection.
Unpleasant Surprises:
A few large earth-moving and logging trucks and machines passed in the very early hours in the beginning of the week waking everyone in the villa.
Surrounding Area:
Towns of Sarteano, Montepluciano, and Radicofani.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sarteano, about 7 kilometers away.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring binoculars for viewing deer, wild boar, badgers, fox, pheasant and all varieties of birds. We had several good meals in Sarteano including at the two trattorias near the main piazza and La Giara about 1/2 mile in town on the main street.

Overall:
The abbey itself is interesting, and the staff will give you a tour if you ask. We enjoyed seeing the wedding preparations for a wedding that was held there and were sorry to miss the town festival being held at the abbey the next day.
Enjoyed Most:
The view was beautiful, and the staff were kind and helpful. It was very pleasant having the maid service daily and getting the new linens. We enjoyed the walking trails surrounding the property, and we found rosemary, dill and oregano growing around the property which we used in our cooking. The bedrooms were very spacious and nicely laid out, and the beds were comfortable - a real asset!
Unpleasant Surprises:
The house could have been REALLY spectacular with a few improvements: better lighting for reading, lighter wall paint (in my opinion), and a new cook top in the kitchen. The dining room table was nice, but I found the metal folding chairs to be uncomfortable. The outdoor furniture needs to be updated. It would be nice to have a paved walkway to the pool.
Surrounding Area:
The countryside was beautiful, with a view at every turn. There were a number of interesting towns and sights within a half hour drive, including Montepulciano and Chiusi. Montepulciano has a medieval festival the last Sunday in August, which we very much enjoyed attending.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town was Sarteano, about a ten-minute drive. It had an excellent supermarket with a great butcher. The town itself was lovely and worth a look. We had a nice simple meal at La Giara in Sarteano.
Tips or Restaurants:
We had a wonderful two-hour lunch at L'Osteria Vecchia in Cetona. Try the rabbit and the fresh pasta. The restaurant also has an excellent wine cellar. Orvieto is a lovely small city with interesting museums and a wonderful Italian gothic cathedral. Excellent ceramic shops also, as well as Etruscan ruins on the outskirts.
Check In Out:
Cristina was very sweet and helpful.
