LocationDescription
This Greek villa is located in an area called "Malades," just south of Heraklion. It is a quiet, secluded area with beautiful views. Nearby there are some tavernas, a gas station, and a small supermarket with a butcher. This is a great location for day trips to many of Crete's archeological sites, such as the Palace of Knossos, the cities of Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Rethymnon and Chania, as well as the beaches on the south side of the island. The airport of Nikos Kazantzakis is 18 km away. It is possible to take either a flight or ferry from Athens to Heraklion or Chania.

(20 hectares)
This lovely villa estate, encompassing 50 enclosed acres, is located on a hill south of the city of Heraklion. Within the property are vineyards, olive trees, fruit trees, aromatic trees, and herbs. Because this estate is a working farm, there are also many animals to be found: ducks, geese, chickens, wild pigeons, horses, cows, goats and boar. The estate includes two separate villas, each with its own swimming pool, of which this villa is one. They are 300 meters away from each other. In addition, there is a separate location within the estate with a swimming pool, where the housekeeper can prepare wonderful meals for guests. The meals can be served in this spot, or at the villas for more privacy. The outdoor area has large terraces with vines and fruit trees with views of the plain, the Zeus Mountain and the sea. The swimming pool is located on the mountain and is surrounded by aromatic trees and herbs. There is outside furniture for eating or just enjoying the view.

Overall:
We had a delightful stay and found the owners to be welcoming hosts to us. They made us feel right at home, made a meal for us, made ice cream for us, played tennis with us on their new court, and they gave us excellent information about places to see in Crete.
Enjoyed Most:
It was quiet and relaxing and the host family were very welcoming. The pool and tennis courts were also enjoyable.
Unpleasant Surprises:
Being out in the country. The property is a long way from a taverna or restaurant. The road up to the house is quite steep.
Surrounding Area:
The ruins at Knossos were interesting as was the archaeology museum in Heraklion. Both free on Mondays.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Nothing really within walking distance except a nice trail through the olive groves around the house.
Tips or Restaurants:
Tennis rackets if you play. The taverna in Slanika is excellent, the restaurant across the street is twice the price and half as good.
Directions:
Our host met us at the ferry and without him the house would have been hard to find at night, I'm sure. No GPS was available.

Enjoyed Most:
The villa is located in a beautiful and quiet location. Very private, well equipped and comfortable. The owners are generous and helpful and very attentive, without being intrusive. Stella provided farm fresh eggs, goat cheese, fresh vegetables, olive oil, wine and many special treats.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The single bathroom is typical for Greece, but a bit below western standards. We were hoping for laundry facilities.
Surrounding Area:
The villa is in a beautiful rural area but convenient to the resources of Iraklion. The owners were very helpful in making touring suggestions and giving directions.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Malades is a short drive and has a well stocked mini market. Super market, bakery, butcher and vegetable stand are about a 15 minute drive away on the outskirts of Iraklion. A car is essential.
Tips or Restaurants:
One week is not enough time to really explore the Island. Ask the owners for directions to Mama Eva's Taverna on the southern coast, an experience well worth the drive. The owners can give you a letter of introduction.
Directions:
The owner will meet you at the airport and take you to the villa. Our arrival was delayed by 5 hours, but our hosts waited cheerfully and surprised us with a late dinner.
Check In Out:
The villa was thoughtfully stocked with coffee, juice, eggs and other essentials upon our arrival

Enjoyed Most:
Beautiful property with gorgeous views. Also, the family who owns the villa and estate are wonderful caretakers and hosts.
Surrounding Area:
It's bucolic location along with the peace and quiet.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The rural location of the villa is a big a plus.
Directions:
We were picked up and dropped off at the airport by the owner, an excellent option to use. In all fairness to any directions given, the roads on Crete can be confusing, but the directions provided made it relatively easy to navigate.
