Customer Reviews

Overall:
The house was awesome. Kitchen was completely equipped. We have rented from RentVillas before. The house itself was really great. It has lots of charm and is cared for lovingly by the owners who live in an adjacent building. They were very helpful. Some people may be put off by having to climb a steep spiral staircase to get to the bedrooms. The owners have an ingenious rope and pulley system for hauling your luggage up and over the balcony railing.
Enjoyed Most:
The vaulted ceilings in the house and the spaciousness of the house.
Enjoyed Least:
We had expected that this house would be more rural, in a small town. The town actually turned out to be larger than expected so we missed that rural countryside feel and there was some amount of noise and no view whatsoever. The town was not charming. It had the feel of a suburb. You have to drive quite a ways to go on day trips to surrounding cities, but you drive through lovely scenery.
Surrounding Area:
Day trip to Avignon.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The house is in a small town. You can walk to the bakery for a breakfast baguette. There is one good restaurant, open on weekends, within walking distance of the house. It was excellent.
Tips or Restaurants:
Just be prepared that you have to be willing to drive a fair amount to get to interesting sites.

Carolyn, September

Overall:
Our group of six adults had a wonderful stay at La Maison du Gard. The owners, Ray and Cristine, live next door and were very helpful and friendly.
Enjoyed Most:
Two things stand out about the property: the beautiful house itself and the great location in the small town of Caveirac.
Enjoyed Least:
The spiral staircase!
Surrounding Area:
Caveirac is nestled in the Vaunage, a beautiful little valley full of farms, vineyards and small towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
There are many small towns around Caveirac, some within an hour's stroll and others an easy bike ride away.
Tips or Restaurants:
The local bistro in Caveirac has great ambiance and food. A good wine list, too!

Jon, September

Overall:
Our experience in the property was excellent. The kitchen was well equipped, the outside area and pool was lovely, and there was plenty of space for the six of us.
Enjoyed Most:
The outside eating area, garden, and pool were our favorite spots. The house was convenient to a large supermarket, and close to Nimes and several interesting smaller towns.
Enjoyed Least:
The spiral staircase might make it difficult for some people to get upstairs. Because of the beautiful stone ceilings there were no overhead lights which made it a little dark in the evenings.
Surrounding Area:
The city of Nimes was 10 minutes away and smaller towns had interesting markets as well. Sommieres was a lovely surprise when we traveled away from the direction of Nimes.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The house is in Caveirac which is tiny but it is nice to be able to walk 2 minutes to the bakery or the cafe.
Tips or Restaurants:
We ate in restaurants on day trips away from the property and cooked an evening meal, so really no recommendations.
Directions:
We used a GPS which led us through some of the little back streets of town (very narrow!), rather than leading us up the main street. We figured it out easily enough once we got there.
Check In Out:
The owners were very accommodating and made both check in and check out very easy. They were available as soon as we called and we never had to wait for them.

Lauri, August

Overall:
We loved La Maison du Gard and were sad to leave. The location was great, as we were able to see many sites in Languedoc and Provence. In fact, we did so much that we felt we didn't have enough time at the property to fully enjoy it.
Enjoyed Most:
The backyard was beautiful. Most of the time that we were at the property, we were in the backyard. The kids loved the swimming pool and it was a beautiful setting for dinner. It was also neat being in a little village during the time of the festival.
Surrounding Area:
We spent a lot of time going to the different sites in the area, such as Pont du Gard, Nimes, Uzes, Les Baux, and St. Remy. It was very convenient.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We were located within the small town of Caveirac.
Tips or Restaurants:
We bought laundry soap and some spices while we were there, but otherwise it was very well-stocked. We didn't try the restaurant in town and we made most of the meals at home and enjoyed the pool.
Directions:
We called the property owner, Ray, a little before we arrived and he met us to guide us in, since there was a festival in town and some of the roads were closed.
Check In Out:
Ray and Christine were very nice and very informative.

Stephanie, July

Overall:
Had a great time. Ray and Christine could not have been more gracious and helpful.
Enjoyed Most:
Bathrooms
Enjoyed Least:
No air conditioning. When outside air temps are above 90, interior spaces will be warm, even with provided room fans. During our stay there was a band playing on stage 100+ feet from the villa until 3 AM for a local festival.
Surrounding Area:
Easily accessible to Arles, Avignon, Uzes, Pont du Gard, Nimes, et al.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Villa adjoins Town Hall and is in the center of the village.
Tips or Restaurants:
Do not rent other than a compact automobile, as entry to villa with anything larger is problematic at best. Villa is exceptionally well-stocked with basics, such as dishwasher detergent, paper towels, etc. There is a moderate-sized Inter Marche a 2-3 minute drive away. Chevradille, in Caveirac, has quaint, good food and service, very reasonably priced. Auberge du Pont Romaine in Sommieres, excellent food. Bec a Vin in Uzes, excellent food and service. Gordes is worth the drive.
Directions:
Did use a GPS, but had no trouble getting to property.

Brian, July

Overall:
We enjoyed the entire stay. The house was in walking distance to town. A five minute walk to the bakery and cafe. A 10 min walk to the InterMarche grocery store.
Enjoyed Most:
The wonderful vaulted ceilings, the great bathrooms, and the wonderful patio and pool.
Enjoyed Least:
The downstairs rooms, especially the kitchen, could use a bit more light. We brought some of the lamps from upstairs rooms that we were not using.
Surrounding Area:
The Chateau and cafe.
Nearby Events or Locales:
It was right in the middle of town
Tips or Restaurants:
There was nothing in the way of spices except salt and pepper. Bring some if you plan to cook. The InterMarche had a good selection of all the grocery items you would need.
Directions:
We used a GPS to get everywhere. It was simple to get to the local areas.
Check In Out:
Caretakers greeted us.

Donald, April

Overall:
Our stay at La Maison du Gard was wonderful. Such a beautiful house and yard. The bedrooms and bathrooms were outstanding and it was so nice to be able to sleep with the windows open. Ray and Christine couldn't have been nicer. They were so accommodating.
Enjoyed Most:
The swimming pool and the outdoor patio were our favorites. We ate every meal outdoors and were never bothered by insects of any kind. The pool was so refreshing after a day of touring the area.
Enjoyed Least:
There was not enough light in the living room and no bathroom on the first floor. After a few days of running up and down the circular staircase, however, it didn't seem so bad--but it would be difficult for anyone with bad knees, etc.
Surrounding Area:
The market in Nimes was fun and we found a great array of fresh fruits and vegetables, cheeses, meats, etc. One of our group was a cyclist and he enjoyed the area for cycling.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The villa was very near the center of Cavierac and it was a short walk to the boulangerie and the restaurant. The local Inter Marche' carried just about anything you could want or need.
Tips or Restaurants:
The house was very well stocked with sufficient pots and pans, dishes, and utensils. They only thing we had to buy immediately was salt and pepper and of course, olive oil for cooking. The local restaurant is excellent. We ate there twice and otherwise cooked all our meals in the villa.
Directions:
Before we left the U.S. we Googled the area and were able to see the actual route we would take into the village. That was helpful because the Rue du Pont looked more like an alley than a street.

Janice, September

Overall:
We had a wonderful time. The house and garden are beautiful, and Ray and Christine were wonderful hosts. The area was very peaceful and relaxing. It was fairly easy to get around by bus and train, and we didn't rent a car.
Enjoyed Most:
The house itself is very unique and comfortable. We had plenty of room for 7 of us to spread out. The garden and pool are lovely and we really enjoyed sitting by the pool and eating outdoors.
Enjoyed Least:
Older people might have a hard time with the spiral staircase. I have no specific complaints about the property.
Surrounding Area:
Charming small town. Ate at a local restaurant the first night, excellent food. The bakery is right round the corner and the bus stop is just a few minutes away. The grocery store and another bakery were within walking distance.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The town we stayed in was pretty small. Nimes is about 6 km away, but we didn't attempt to walk it.
Tips or Restaurants:
Just bring yourselves and comfortable clothes. The house has WiFi, great TV, stereo system and small library. There is a gas grill for cooking outdoors. I don't remember the name of the local restaurant but it was right around the corner.
Directions:
We took the train from Paris CDG airport to Nimes, then took cabs to the property. The taxi drivers had no problems with the address.

Peggy, June

Overall:
Wonderful experience. Perfect for our family and for touring the region.
Enjoyed Most:
Beautiful interiors, spacious and well-designed.
Enjoyed Least:
We would have a liked being in a larger, busier town with more restaurant offerings.
Surrounding Area:
Proximity to many sights and towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The villa is in the village of Caveirac, a very small town without many businesses/restaurants. There is a wonderful boulangerie only a 2 minute walk away! There is a larger grocery store within a 5 minute drive. We had most dinners in neighboring towns and the one restaurant in the village serves dinner only Thursday-Saturday nights and would not accommodate us Saturday evening at 8:30 when we arrived without a reservation. This is a little difficult since the arrival time is Saturday between 5 and 8pm. Recommend you ask the villa owner to reserve for you in advance if you would like to dine nearby the evening you arrive. We did enjoy pizza that first evening from a nearby pizza truck. It was very good!
Tips or Restaurants:
Definitely check out the town of Sommiere. Many restaurant options and just a 20 minute drive. Nimes is also very close with many options.
Directions:
Yes, we used a GPS, but directions I found on the Rentvillas website from a previous renter were helpful.
Check In Out:
Great! Ray and Christine are very accommodating.

Ellery, June

Overall:
This is by far the most successful house rental abroad I've ever experienced. We were all absolutely blown away by how beautiful the house was. The pictures on the Web site don't actually do it justice. The experience was absolutely perfect from start to finish and we started talking about a return visit almost from the get go!
Enjoyed Most:
The layout of the house is very open, warm, and comfortable. The living area is extremely comfortable with three distinct and comfortable places to dine. The kitchen is very user friendly with every amenity at your fingertips. Each bedroom has its own unique style and nobody felt like they drew the short straw. The bathrooms are out of this world and the showers are a religious experience. And Ray and Christine were an absolute hoot, there when you needed them, but always giving us our privacy when needed.
Enjoyed Least:
I can't think of a thing I didn't like about the house. I suppose the spiral staircase going from the ground floor up to the bedrooms could be a bit iffy once you'd had a few glasses of wine, but it added such a unique flair to the place I wouldn't have changed it.
Surrounding Area:
Caveirac is situated in the perfect locale, just on the border of Languedoc Roussillon and Provence. It offers such a wide array of towns to visit, all within under an hour's drive. Our favorites were probably the charming Sommieres, about 45 minutes northwest of Caveirac, and Les Baux, about an hour's drive to the east. Another beautiful day was our drive down the eastern side of the Camargue, with its astonishing array of wildlife. There were so many choices of beautiful places to visit that we determined we're just going to have to return again sometime soon to go to the towns nearby that we didn't have time to get to.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The house is situated in the heart of Caveirac, a charming little town with a terrific restaurant, as well as a good butcher and baker, all about a three minute walk from the house. The nearest larger town is Nimes, which is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from the house.
Tips or Restaurants:
Don't overpack! The house has pretty much everything you'd need, though it can be a good idea to bring dry spices for whatever cooking you do there. But they've got all the towels and linens you need and a fully stocked kitchen in terms of dishware, pots and pans and cutlery. But the whole way of life is casual no matter where you go, even in the finest restaurants, so don't bring more clothes than you need. You'll just be sorry you didn't leave enough room for souvenirs!
Directions:
We did use a GPS, but the directions we had were just fine.

Tom, June

Overall:
Pretty close to perfect.
Enjoyed Most:
Lovely, perfectly appointed and clean. Caveiric is a charming little town.
Enjoyed Least:
Really nothing. The spiral stair would be an issue for an elderly person.
Surrounding Area:
Nimes was a pleasant surprise. Beautiful, clean, historic small city. Sommieres is a lovely little town nearby.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Caveiric is a small town with one very decent and charming restaurant, bakery, butcher shop and produce shop.
Tips or Restaurants:
Excellent and reasonably priced restaurant in Nimes called Imprevue.
Directions:
GPS is good to have for touring area - many round abouts can be confusing.

Carol, May

Overall:
In a word, "Fantastic" - the property itself was stunning and our hosts, Ray and Christine were just wonderful and so welcoming.
Enjoyed Most:
The combined living and kitchen area was beautiful with a gorgeous stone ceiling.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing at all.
Surrounding Area:
It's a beautiful area with so much to see and do, there is something for everybody. Whether you like history or art or just lazing on a beach it's all there.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The property is located right in the heart of the village.
Tips or Restaurants:
You really don't need anything for the property as everything is supplied except groceries, but you do need a car as the village is only serviced by a local bus route.
Directions:
I used a GPS, but it was very straight forward from Nimes, the closest large city which is where we arrived by train from Paris.
Check In Out:
The owners were so welcoming from the moment I had contact with them via email prior to our arrival. I have nothing but praise for them.

Mark, April

Overall:
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the house. We kept imagining how great it would be to live in it year round.
Enjoyed Most:
We loved the historical feel of the building with the exposed original stonework and the arches yet were very appreciative of the modern conveniences of the bathrooms and kitchen.
Enjoyed Least:
We didn't have any problems.
Surrounding Area:
The whole region is so picturesque. We jumped out of the car many times for perfect photo opportunities. The town, Caveirac is well located and yet off the beaten path. We visited many historical locations and saw some amazing Roman ruins.
Nearby Events or Locales:
La Maison du Gard is in the centre of Caveirac which is a small town of around 3500 people. The local boulangerie was just around the corner and the big supermarket was a 10 minute walk.
Tips or Restaurants:
The house is well stocked, other than food of course. You don't even need to bring a guide book because there are plenty in the house along with novels, DVD's, CS's and games.
Check In Out:
Ray and Christine were so friendly and welcoming. They were happy to answer questions and make suggestions when asked.

Rod, April

Overall:
We truly enjoyed the house which had everything one could ask for including the most hospitable hosts, Ray and Christine. They were available for suggestions about day trips, restaurants, etc. in the area, but were unobtrusive and respecting of our privacy. We were very comfortable in lovely surroundings.
Enjoyed Most:
The property has been marvelously renovated and well decorated. The feeling of history remains even though all the comforts of a modern home were available.
Enjoyed Least:
The only thing that was a minor inconvenience was the need to park off property in a lot which was a short walk from the property.
Surrounding Area:
There were several historically significant sites within a short drive of Nimes, Avignon, Pont du Gard, etc. as well as many quaint small villages with daily markets. Beautiful countryside with many Vineyards. Day trips to the Camargue, Les Saintes Maries de la Mer, and Aigues Mortes, Provence, and Collioure are relatively easy.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The house is in the small town of Caveirac and there is a bakery, store, and a fine restaurant within easy walking distance. The larger town of Nimes is only 8km away and was any easy drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
This house had everything, including a supply of paper goods, except spices and food which could be obtained at the local InterMarche. The nearby Cheverdille restaurant is excellent as was the restaurant in the Auberge du Pont Romain in nearby Sommieres.
Directions:
We did use a GPS which I found to be invaluable. We purchased a France memory card and used our own GPS.
Check In Out:
As suggested we called the keyholder the day before arrival to confirm, which provided both an introduction to the property owner as well as peace of mind.

Harry, October

Overall:
We had a great time, and didn't realize beforehand what a great location Nimes is. The owners are excellent hosts.
Enjoyed Most:
This house has two of the best bathrooms I've ever seen.
Enjoyed Least:
There is a narrow circular staircase leading up to the bedrooms, which can be a bit tricky for the less than agile, and scared our dog. Also, there are really only two baths, and only one can be used for showering at one time.
Surrounding Area:
The village is okay, and there is a small shopping center just 5 minutes away by car. The major highway is about 10 minutes away, so you can cover most of Provence and Languedoc in easy day trips.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Right in the center of Caveirac - so went for our baguette every morning.
Tips or Restaurants:
Do try the little restaurant, La Cheverdille, in the center of town - only open for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. The Sunday market in neighbouring Calvisson helped us stock up on local produce goodies.
Directions:
If you take the first turn-off to Caveirac, you'll get lost finding the town square. There is currently some construction on the road, so signs might not be there. Take the 3rd turn-off.

Jackie, March

Overall:
Blissful, if not rapturous.
Enjoyed Most:
This is a stunning building outside and inside -- the stone arches and ceiling are a marvel -- that has been splendidly renovated in a very modern style. All fixtures, appliances and electronics are first rate.
Enjoyed Least:
Owners live on the premises, so privacy -- we are very sensitive to this -- is never complete. On the other hand, the proximity and availability makes it very easy to answer questions which inevitably arise. It is doubtful you will ever encounter owners more friendly and eager to please.
Tips or Restaurants:
Owners supplied paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, dishwasher detergent -- a very nice -- indeed rare -- gesture that is much appreciated.
Directions:
Use www.viamichelin.com for excellent, detailed directions

Gail, July

Overall:
Excellent.
Enjoyed Most:
Beautiful house, patio and pool, wonderful hosts.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing
Surrounding Area:
Good location for day trips to Avignon, Arles, Nimes, Les Baux and the Carmargue.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Caveriac was a one-minute stroll from the door.
Tips or Restaurants:
Our best restaurant find was Le Cabro de Or outside Le Baux, a Michelin one star.

Don, June

Enjoyed Most:
Beautifully appointed historical building. This was an extremely stylish unit, not what you would find in a rental unit, more on the lines of a luxury resort.
Enjoyed Least:
We were not aware that there was a festival in town for the first three nights, hence making it difficult to sleep at nights due to the festivities.
Surrounding Area:
The proximity to Nimes is about 15 minutes by car, secluded little country village with access to all the areas attraction by no more than a 1 hour drive to each.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Calvisson, yes
Tips or Restaurants:
This property is more tailored for a renter that is not constantly on the go to new and different places. You could easily go to market pick up food for the day or week and cook and enjoy this property in and of itself. Making several day trips was tiring, but no fault of the property itself.

Christopher, October

Overall:
We had a wonderful stay and felt the property was a great value. It is really a luxury villa at a quite economical price. There are at least a week's worth of great day trips to take from this area.
Enjoyed Most:
The beautiful 17th century stonework was preserved and visible, but the house had been thoroughly and thoughtfully modernized.
Enjoyed Least:
Having to park about two blocks away in the public lot.
Surrounding Area:
Caveirac has two great bakeries, a wonderful restaurant, and a beautiful artisan fruits/vegetables/cheeses/ausage shop within easy walking distance of the house. Within a short drive were also a local wine cooperative, grocery store, and gas station. Nimes has amazing Roman monuments, and the nearby towns of Calvisson and Sommieres are quite charming.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Caveirac. The house is directly next to the hotel de ville.
Tips or Restaurants:
The kitchen is extremely well appointed, so there is no reason to bring anything other than specialty spices for cooking. The house was a little difficult to find based on via Michelin directions, but the Rue du Pont meets the main street of Caveirac just before you get to the fountain. The town restaurant, Chaverdille, was excellent, as was the restaurant Two Palms in Calvisson. There was a nice, if small, produce and seafood market in Caveirac on Saturday morning and a larger market in Calvisson on Sunday morning. If you go to the grocery store, remember to bring your own plastic bags to carry your groceries there are some stashed in the kitchen.

Sarah, September

Enjoyed Most:
Lovely house, large rooms and bathrooms, quiet garden, and pool.
Enjoyed Least:
Had trouble with the outdoor barbecue. Had to be careful getting the van through the narrow street and down the sloped driveway.
Surrounding Area:
Local restaurant and boulangeries, as well as handy larger supermarche. Great access to beautiful towns and countryside, places like Uzes, Pont du Gard, the Camargue, Aigues Mortes, etc. Close to airports in Nimes and Montpellier.
Nearby Events or Locales:
In the town of Caveirac.
Tips or Restaurants:
It was a very well equipped house.

Victoria, June

Overall:
The property was great! It was comfortable, spacious, well decorated and equipped.

Hank, January

Overall:
We found the house to be exceptionally well-equipped and spacious for our party of six. It was a superb base for trips of all kinds as well as the exploration of the village itself.
Enjoyed Most:

Relaxing by the pool and enjoying each other's company in the spacious living area.
Events or Locales:

We visited Nimes, Aix-en-Provence, Pont du Gard, Montpelier and the coast.

September

Overall:
What a fantastic holiday! Our family thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Wonderful house well located for exploring the area.
