Customer Reviews

Overall:
Wonderful place. Considering returning to the larger farmhouse with my children.
Enjoyed Most:
The remoteness and spectacular views.
Surrounding Area:
Had a wonderful time visiting nearby towns such as Siena, Radda, Greve, San Gimignano and of course Florence, then coming back in the evening to enjoy some wine, cheese and bread while looking at the beautiful views of the valley.
Tips or Restaurants:
No bad restaurants.
Directions:
Directions were spot on.

Carol, July

Overall:
Excellent.
Enjoyed Most:
Privacy, pool, view.
Enjoyed Least:
Breakfast could be improved, although service was excellent.
Surrounding Area:
Everything.

Overall:
This is the perfect location to get away from the crowds of Florence and a great home base for day trips throughout Tuscany. Machiavelli 4 exceeded our expectations with clean and spacious accommodations that could easily accommodate 6 people with room to spare. Beds were comfortable, bathrooms were modern with plenty of hot water and kitchen was adequately stocked to allow for cooking in when tired after a long day of sightseeing. Just as memorable, however, is the staff who took great care of us. Sara, Christiana and Valeria helped with every question and request we asked of them. They were so friendly and helpful and made certain our visit to the property was everything we had hoped. Not to be forgotten is the amazing pool on the grounds. The sounds of the water removed all stresses of the day and the view from the pool brought relaxation to a new level!
Enjoyed Most:
It was so lovely and well appointed that we felt pampered...which is always great when you are trying to do as many sightseeing activties that are humanly possible during a trip to Europe. I guess the best thing was the staff -- they were wonderful, kind and informative.
Enjoyed Least:
Everything was wonderful and perfect - so I hate to be critical. It did seem odd that guests had to pay for a tour of the castle/premises.
Surrounding Area:
Tuscany, the area around the complex, is absolutely beautiful. We loved the surrounding medieval towns and vineyards. We enjoyed very good restaurants, including those that were recommended by the staff. In general, the Italian people were lovely to us.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Montefiriodolfi and Bargino -- 2 km. No.
Tips or Restaurants:
Osteria Alla Piazza Castellina in Chianti; Tre Archi Castel in San Gimignano.
Directions:
After a few days, we started using CityMaps2Go and it was wonderful to help us navigate. Rick Steves recommends it -- you download the maps before you go, so you do not use 'data' and it does not require access to the internet. It even shows you exactly where you are on the map as you travel.
Check In Out:
The process in/out was very easy.

Penny, May

Overall:
Tuscany was one stop on our trip to Italy and it was, by far, the highlight of our two week vacation. The castle is set up on the hilltop of Tuscany and is so serene and relaxing. The grounds are well cared for, the accommodations are welcoming and comfortable and Sara, Christiana and Valeria are so helpful with everything from finding the local market to giving up their computer for us to purchase your train tickets.
Enjoyed Most:
The accommodations were superb. Traveling with two families, we found we had more than enough room to enjoy the unit without stepping all over each other. Sara, Christiana and Valeria are huge assets to the property. They were so friendly and helpful, even when I showed up to buy a bottle of the wonderful estate wine just as they were closing.
Surrounding Area:
We rented bikes for a couple of days and loved how we could ride through so many small towns within such a close distance to the castle. The beauty and magic of Tuscany cannot be overstated!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Would definitely recommend having a rental car unless you want to stay at the property. You either need a car or a bike to explore Tuscany!
Tips or Restaurants:
Just wander and see what happens!
Directions:
We were able to find the property with the direction given, only because we saw the sign at the last minute.
Check In Out:
Check in/out was flawless.

Lynda, May

Overall:
It was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. The property and accommodations were just as pictured on RentVillas.com. The location was spectacular and the views were wonderful. The directions to the castle were clear and the reception staff was gracious and helpful from start to finish. Everything went smoothly and we had a wonderful vacation. I would recommend Machiavelli 4 without any reservation.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything. The location, the views, the facility itself mirrored the Tuscan landscape-lots of stone and wooden beams in the construction. The baths were modern. The kitchen had both a dishwasher and a washing machine. The furnishings were clean and comfortable and provided both an indoor and outdoor place to eat. The graciousness of the reception staff added to our stay. They went out of their way to be of assistance.
Enjoyed Least:
It would be hard to think of anything negative. The hair pin turns to get to the property were slightly threatening. But then how else could one get to the top and enjoy the beauty of the views. May was a perfect time to visit.
Surrounding Area:
We visited all of the surrounding hill top villages and spent two days in Florence. We could have spent more than one day in each of the hilltop towns. We drove the Chianti loop and learned so much about Tuscan history. The art we saw in Florence was spectacular. How can one explain what it is to stand in front of Michaelangelo's David and not be awestruck. The food was out of this world. We ate in small local restaurants and enjoyed Italian cuisine at its finest.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town was Bargino. It was about one km by car. It had a small restaurant and a small grocery store. For more variety we drove to San Casciano where there was a COOP or larger supermarket type grocery. There were several good restaurants in San Casciano--our favorite was Nello. The notice on the menu said that their food was so fresh they didn't keep a refrigerator. And it was!!!
Tips or Restaurants:
Suggestions: Rent or your own GPS system. We bought the maps for Italy and programmed home immediately. Then no matter where we were we could get back to Machiavelli. Rick Steves' book Tuscany was excellent and we used David Wagner's self guided tours. He had several good recommendations for restaurants. Good idea to call ahead for a reservation if you know where you want to go in advance.
Directions:
Property direction were good. See above about GPS.
Check In Out:
Everything went so smoothly or both ends we couldn't believe it. From beginning to end we had a marvelous time.

Kathleen, May

Overall:
We loved our stay at Machiavelli...we had a car so were able to visit many areas of Tuscany, and still have a home base. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, the surroundings were so beautiful it felt like a fairy tale. Our dream vacation!!
Enjoyed Most:
The location was great...easy to travel into Florence, or to any of the other areas in Tuscany. Or we could just sit and enjoy the local wine while looking at the stunning views from our own terrace!
Surrounding Area:
Tuscany in the Fall? It was beautiful!!
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano...about a 5 mile trip...easy to find, with great little shops and restaurants, as well as a grocery store.
Tips or Restaurants:
Make sure you have two of the little coffee percolators! They only make one "American-size cup", so we made sure they stayed busy. The wine at the villa is very reasonable and quite good. There is a small restaurant in Borgino (closest village) that specializes in seafood that was a true surprise...elegant with excellent food, but looks like a strip-mall storefront. One of the best we tried!
Directions:
We used a GPS, and it led us right to the villa. We certainly would recommend renting a car with this option. We traveled all over Tuscany with no problem, thanks to our GPS.
Check In Out:
The office closes at 6:00 PM so be sure to be there before that!

Elaine, October

Overall:
We had a fabulous experience. The staff was wonderful as were our accommodations. We loved the two level house we stayed in and the amount of room that it provided for us!
Enjoyed Most:
The view and the buildings/castle were gorgeous...exactly what we were looking for. I loved our little house with the two levels of living space, concrete counter tops, beautiful windows and easy to care for flooring. In addition, the stone buildings, pathways and various levels of the property provided some wonderful views and beautiful opportunities for picture taking. I really enjoyed the outdoor seating the property provided so we could sip wine or coffee and enjoy the views. We met some very nice people at breakfast who were also able to show us their rooms in the castle, which was very, very cool. And, I cannot forget to compliment the estate on their wine. I didn't get a chance to taste their olive oil, but the wine was fabulous! I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a wonderful taste of Tuscany!
Enjoyed Least:
As coffee drinkers, we had to make numerous rounds of espresso in the two Mokas (Italian coffee makers) provided before everyone had had their fill. We missed our American coffee maker.
Surrounding Area:
Gorgeous rolling hills and wonderful views. Beautiful pathways, landscaping and outdoor seating areas. Loved all the old stone buildings. Nice dogs and resident kitties. Friendly staff. We did like being close to San Casciano too. That worked out well since we spent many long days sightseeing and wanted to have someplace close to go to dinner. San Casciano is a beautiful, little town that had a variety of restaurants to choose from, which we appreciated. We also liked that they had a grocery store there called the Coop. We went there several times to get breakfast foods and lunch-type snacks.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino was the closest town and you could walk to it, however it was at the bottom of the hill and about 2 miles from the Castle. If you walked down, you had to walk up and I wouldn't recommend that at night. While Bargino was a very small town, it did have one restaurant there that was open for dinner. It was a fish/seafood restaurant and the food and service were great!
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a camera and your clothes and the rest you can get there. With the Coop being so close, groceries were accessible, if you had a car. We bought laundry soap, coffee and all the food we needed.
Directions:
We loved that you provided the GPS coordinates, so we did not have to map it out. Can't tell you if the instructions were good or bad. There was a GPS unit in our car and that helped a ton as we explored Tuscany, including Florence and a variety of the surrounding towns.
Check In Out:
All excellent. Loved the staff there. They spoke English well and were very helpful if we had questions.

Diane, October

Overall:
Fabulous. View and surroundings were stunning.
Enjoyed Most:
View of countryside.
Surrounding Area:
Did a lot of sightseeing. Visited lots of little towns. Fell in love with the architecture.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano. No, had to drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
Found several good Restaurants in San Casciano. Nello's was one of favorites.
Directions:
Yes, we used GPS. Recommend using GPS coordinates for navigation. It's the most accurate.

Michael, October

Overall:
We had an amazing and wonderful week at Machiavelli 4. It was very relaxing and a great location to go out and do things. The front desk staff were very helpful and full of good advice.
Enjoyed Most:
The quiet, peaceful and relaxing atmosphere was fantastic. The view from our terrace was beautiful and the rustic character of the villa was prime!
Surrounding Area:
The rolling hills of this area are beautiful with the vineyards and olive orchards. Great place to go for a walk or bike ride.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town of any size was San Casciano which had a great market on Monday morning with a great view of the valley. It was only a short 10 minute drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
The villa was nicely equipped when we arrived. The bug device was handy although we had very few to worry about.
Directions:
We had a GPS which really was nice to have in the car rental. It did match the directions very well but it is hard to see some of the road signs at times.
Check In Out:
Check in and out we're really nice. No stress or surprises at all.

Chris, August

Overall:
Absolutely wonderful! It was the last week of a four week holiday and it was so relaxing and peaceful. Beautiful pool, great complex with a wonderful wine tasting/tour on site.
Enjoyed Most:
The history of the castle was interesting and the property was great. Nice view from the upstairs windows, a nicely equipped kitchen and a very nice sitting area outside.
Surrounding Area:
The Chianti hills are a wonderful backdrop to this great villa.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We went to San Casciano which was a short drive and really enjoyed the Monday morning market as well as a nice Catholic mass in the little church on Sunday night.
Tips or Restaurants:
We found the list provided to be right on and with only a 13 kilometer drive to Florence there is lots to see and do. The hot air balloon ride from Idea Balloons which is only a 10 minute drive was an amazing way to see the Tuscan sunrise.
Directions:
We used a GPS with our car rental and it was very handy to have. The directions to the property were good but it was nice to see the route on a map as well.
Check In Out:
The ladies at the front desk were very friendly and helpful throughout the entire week. Check in and out was very quick and pleasant.

Chris, August

Overall:
One of my favorite places on earth! It was perfect, mix in a little history and a tour of the property and wine-tasting...one of the best vacation experiences I have ever enjoyed!
Enjoyed Most:
The location... It's in the middle of the Tuscan countryside and yet in 20 minutes you could be in downtown Florence.
Surrounding Area:
Winding roads through small towns and vineyards and 20 minutes from the city of Florence.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Yes, but we chose to bike as they provided them at the villa.
Tips or Restaurants:
I was looking forward to my morning coffee but did not bring any. My favorite time was morning coffee in the backyard with coffee made in a perk on the stove...we were lucky as coffee and sugar were left from previous renters. So, I would say bring coffee.
Directions:
We used a GPS and it was super easy from the airport.
Check In Out:
The ladies working the front desk were very friendly and accommodating and knew a lot about the surrounding area--from what time masses were at the local church to where the travelling markets were each day of the week.

Deanna, August

Overall:
We had a wonderful stay! Our villa and its grounds were even more stunning than in the pictures. We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful property!
Enjoyed Most:
The view and the grounds were spectacular. We also really enjoyed the pool.
Enjoyed Least:
Everything would have been perfect if we had had air conditioning. It got very hot in the villa and some nights it was hard to sleep. The beds could have been more comfortable and lastly the WiFi connection was spotty throughout the house.
Surrounding Area:
EVERYTHING! The proximity to Florence, and Siena was extremely convenient. We also enjoyed doing other day trips to San Gimignano and Volterra.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town was Bargino. It was not walking distance because of the large hill leading up to the castle. It was only 5 minutes by car.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring plenty of converters for media devices.
Check In Out:
We really loved this property and would stay there again in a heart beat!

Margo, July

Overall:
We loved this property and it was exactly as described. It provided the opportunity for peace and quiet and yet was close to the action of charming villages and of course Florence. We would return to this villa in a heartbeat! A great property and a great value as well - a real winner.
Enjoyed Most:
We loved the size of our spacious and beautiful lodging which allowed the four of us to spread out, have our space, and yet experience the good times of eating, lounging, enjoying the stunning views together, and using it as a base for all of Tuscany. We also loved the infinity pool, better than any other one we saw, and it was the source of many ooh's and ahh's from our pictures sent home.
Enjoyed Least:
There's very little to be concerned about. A little more lighting in the kitchen would be good. We needed more complete directions on how to set the washing machine to complete the load. It stops early and we needed to push the knob forward and weren't sure we were doing it right.
Surrounding Area:
We loved the grounds of the villa itself. We also loved the villages in the area and the fantastic location between Florence and Siena and not far from Lucca .
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano was close to us and worked perfectly to get to the COOP market as well as the local restaurants.
Check In Out:
Each member of the staff, especially Sara, is awesome, attentive, charming, and thorough. As a result, the check-in and -out process was easy and timely. Everything at this villa ran smoothly.

Donna, June

Overall:
Pleasant, excellent staff--very responsive and helpful with all requests.
Enjoyed Most:
View and antiquity.
Enjoyed Least:
Due to chilly weather we used the fireplace, but it created a good deal of smoke. We had one very cold night before maintenance came to turn on the heat. Also, the shower is open and everything in the bathroom got damp. The WiFi signal could have been stronger.
Surrounding Area:
Scenery.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino. It's within walking distance, but there is no shoulder.

Linda, June

Overall:
Excellent.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, view, character.
Enjoyed Least:
Second bathroom was on a different floor from bedrooms, down steep stone steps.
Surrounding Area:
Beauty of the countryside, olive groves, vineyards, cypress trees, and hilltop villages. We savored delicious, locally produced food. And the property was only a 25-minute drive to Florence, 40 to Siena, and about 45 to San Gimignano.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino, five-minute drive down the hill, has one shop, and two restaurants. San Casciano in Val di Pesa, ten minutes away, is a bigger town with a number of shops and restaurants.
Tips or Restaurants:
Restaurant Nelli in San Casciano was excellent. Family-run, with local specialties.
Directions:
Directions were fine, but it was very helpful having a GPS.

Jessica, May

Overall:
The villa was beyond my wildest expectations. We were so pleased.
Enjoyed Most:
Quaint and rustic setting and beautiful scenery.
Enjoyed Least:
The only things I would recommend is that 1) the dishes be really checked for cleanliness and 2) trash bag liners be put in the trash cans since the management requires the guests to empty the trash.
Surrounding Area:
Tuscany exceeded my expectations and the scenery was breathtaking.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino and Montefiridolfi. Personally I thought they were a little too far for walking but did enjoy walks in San Casciano, which was a little further away. We really like San Casciano a lot.
Tips or Restaurants:
San Casciano restaurants were great, especially Nello, Nonno, and Popolamo (best lamb chops ever).
Directions:
We did us the GPS.
Check In Out:
These went smoothly.

Brenda, April

Overall:
Beautiful view. Very nice facilities. The staff was excellent.
Enjoyed Most:
Peace and quiet.
Enjoyed Least:
The long drive up the hill, but that is the price you pay for such a beautiful place--so no complaint here.
Surrounding Area:
The great little towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Not within walking distance.
Directions:
We did use GPS and it was a big help.
Check In Out:
The people were excellent--very nice and efficient.

Willis, April

Overall:
We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this property.
Enjoyed Most:
View, decor inside the house, very roomy. The ladies in the office are very helpful.
Surrounding Area:
Very typical Tuscan environment
Directions:
Used a GPS, a must have.
Check In Out:
We were a little late arriving at the property due to an accident related to our rental car. I phoned the office along the way from Rome, and the lady waited for us past 7:00 PM. It was already dark when we arrived and we were having problems finding the office. She came out of the office to where we parked and led us to her office from there.

Jie, March

Overall:
We experienced the vacation of a lifetime. Having our own villa on the property of a former castle provided privacy, a sense of history and a feeling of "belonging" in the area that a hotel stay simply cannot.
Enjoyed Most:
The views each and every morning were simply outstanding. The upkeep was excellent as was the variety of flora. The palpable sense of history living in a stone building with the patina of age added to the trip.
Enjoyed Least:
The kitchen could have been a little nicer (countertop a bit ravaged, clothes washer very small for the number of people the building accomodates, no clothes dryer) and the bathroom showers tended to get water all over the floors. Would have liked a bathtub or better still a hot tub/Jacuzzi.
Surrounding Area:
The places to visit held amazing works of art (Florence, Siena,) the number of vineyards boggled the mind, the lovely small towns held delights as well.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Montefiradolfi was a quick walk down the road along the top of the ridge on which the castello sits. Bargino had a little more to offer but was a more difficult walk down the switchbacks that led to and from the castello.
Tips or Restaurants:
We loved "The Bule" in Bargino. The owner was fabulously welcoming, the food simple but marvelous, and the atmosphere made you feel at home in this foreign land not because it felt like America, but because it felt like joining an Italian family. The bistecca is not to be missed if you like meat.
Directions:
Get a GPS. It will be WELL worth the minor additional expense to spare you the lost time and frustration of finding your way in crowded, twisting streets.
Check In Out:
The staff were helpful, welcoming, informative and fun.

Dorice, October

Overall:
We had a great time. The view was great! Reception was wonderful and extremely helpful, alway a smile. Service was quick and efficient. We found the villa to be a good size and to suit the needs of four people quite well. We were cool one rainy day and reception was quick to get us set up with a beautiful fire in the upstairs fireplace.
Enjoyed Most:
The view! The grounds, the ancient fortress and the privacy it provided.
Enjoyed Least:
Beds were a little hard and uncomfortable. Kitchen counter really needed to be either replaced or totally refurbished. Washing machine did not work particularly well. The area rugs were quite dusty and we had to roll them up and store them away because of allergies. Mosquitoes were bad as the grass outside was left pretty long throughout our stay so we couldn't sit out as much as we wanted.
Surrounding Area:
The history, beauty, and culture that is Tuscany. The food, the wine, the art and architecture, museums, restaurants.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano was 6 km away and had a great grocery store.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring bug spray.
Directions:
Used a GPS

Charmaine, September

Overall:
We had a great time. The place was wonderful--so quiet and peaceful and close to many interesting places to visit.
Enjoyed Most:
We loved the view, the gardens, and the serenity.
Enjoyed Least:
The kitchen was good but we struggled with our Italian coffee maker. Editor's Note: An additional Moka stove-top coffee maker has been added. Dec 2012.
Surrounding Area:
Plenty to see, great places to visit, wonderful restaurants, fantastic countryside.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano--it's not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Rent a car and drive. We saw the most amazing places by just getting in the car and driving through the countryside. Be sure to visit the hill towns such as San Gimignano and Certaldo.

Patricia, September

Overall:
We are in love with Tuscany! The beauty of the countryside--and we were in the middle of it--is so hard to describe. The folks at the office were very helpful and very patient with us. Wonderful!!
Enjoyed Most:
The scenic views, the cozy home, lovely amenities, the history of the grounds, the furnishings. Can we just say everything?
Enjoyed Least:
The hill we had to drive up to reach the property.
Surrounding Area:
The proximity to lovely towns and vineyards. Also very easy to get to Florence.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano is not within walking distance. You definitely need a car.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring slippers for the stone floors. We had Matisse the chef come and prepare a dinner with and for us. It was a terrific experience that we highly recommend. Also, the wine tasting and tour of the castle were fun. Tratorria da Bule, just down the road in Bargino, was great. Definitely go see Siena. A GPS is a great idea; we didn't have one and needed to make several U-turns.
Directions:
We used a map and got there but a GPS would have been a help. We used Google Maps on an iPhone.

Lynn, May

Overall:
We had a great time. We loved it!
Enjoyed Most:
The location, the history, and the ambiance.
Enjoyed Least:
We found the mattresses to be uncomfortable.

Mary, April

Overall:
The place was AMAZING! Beautifully decorated, comfortable, with outstanding vistas and charming staff. Any time they needed to do anything in the olive groves below, they asked if it was okay with us. We asked for more towels, and they provided them right away. This is the only way to travel, and this location was convenient to everything we wanted to see. Several of us took advantage of the spa, and the staff also made arrangements for a personal chef for one night.
Enjoyed Most:
Location and serenity. What a great place to come home to every night, and a great place to just chill if that was what we wanted to do that day.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing
Surrounding Area:
Close enough to major attractions that we could drive to for the day and still be home in time to enjoy dinner at home.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano. A little too far to walk if you wanted to bring groceries home.
Tips or Restaurants:
One suggestion would be to bring your cloth grocery bags from home since the Coop charges for plastic bags. Also, since we were a group, and several brought laptops with us, it's a good idea to ask for more than one internet password when you get there. They had no problem giving us a second password. Plug adapters are available at the Coop in San Casciano. There were hair dryers in both bathrooms, so you can leave yours at home. The nights get cooler, so be sure to pack a sweater. If you attract mosquitoes, bring bug repellant. Pack a small flashlight if everyone gets up at different times. They really help as there are step ups and downs on both main levels.
Directions:
We had a GPS, so the address worked for us.
Check In Out:
Ask for internet passwords when you check in. You don't want to get caught needing one after the office closes.

Mary, March

Overall:
Our stay exceeded my expectations. Staff could not have been more helpful. The villa was stocked with everything we needed to prepare breakfast everyday after a trip to the COOP in San Casciano before taking our day trips to Firenze, Greve, Pisa, Volterra, and San Gimignano.
Enjoyed Most:
The villa decor was charming and it was comfortably furnished. We especially loved sitting in front of the fireplace at the end of the day sipping a Super Tuscan or a Brunello.
Enjoyed Least:
It's difficult to identify anything negative.
Surrounding Area:
We loved the natural beauty of the hillside surrounding the villas with its olive groves and vineyards.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Montefiridolfi is the nearest small town and within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Eat the three basic food groups every day--prosciutto, chianti and gelato! Try Caffe Del Populano in San Casciano for wonderfully prepared locally grown foods--Via N Machiavelli 34. Also on the road to Greve the Ristorante L'Acino Rosso was a great find next to the Castelgreve Winery. Definitely a place where the locals eat--so you know it's great.

Eileen, March

Overall:
We really enjoyed our stay. Hey, you're in an historic 14th-century farmhouse in Tuscany...what's not to like about that? Future travelers should understand, however, that this property qualifies as "rustic," and those who are looking for resort glitz or modern amenities would be advised to look elsewhere and probably pay quite a bit more.
Enjoyed Most:
The location was beautiful: Situated in the Chianti countryside, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, and easy highway access to most of Tuscany. Florence is only a 20-minute drive.
Enjoyed Least:
Mainly niggling details see below, but travelers should understand that they will need to drive to reach any services at all outside the property.
Surrounding Area:
One hour after arrival, we were taking a walk from the property and passed a gate with a small sign that said "Open Wine." The gate was open, so we walked in. A woman asked if we were there for wine tasting, so we said yes. Soon afterward, a very nice old gentleman drove up the hill and opened up his wine factory, where we spent the next half hour sampling and subsequently buying his latest vintage of Chianti Classico. Awesome.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Several other reviewers have already discussed San Casciano. We only went there once, and weren't overly impressed.
Tips or Restaurants:
Extra towels, because the showers lack doors or curtains and the water goes all over the place. The kitchen is reasonably well equipped and quite atmospheric, so we recommend stopping off at a supermarket on the way in and stocking up. There is no dryer and the washer is pretty dodgy and small, so it's probably better to assume you'll need a week's clothing and just bring it.
Directions:
We did use GPS and it worked fine. Travelers should note that the driveway to the villa from the gate to the property is fairly steep and gravel. We had a rented van that barely made it back up the hill after we unloaded. But you can park at the gate, which we did the rest of the time.
Check In Out:
The ladies at the office, which is about 40m from the front door of the villa, are there during business hours and are extremely helpful and friendly. You can sign up at the office for breakfasts, wine tastings and castle tours, and spa treatments in the castle, or buy some of the products produced on the property.

Christopher, January

Overall:
We had a great time. The women at the property were very helpful.
Enjoyed Most:
View, peace and quiet, sitting outside sipping our wine watching the sunset. Very close to Florence.
Enjoyed Least:
The shower in one bathroom didn't drain well.
Surrounding Area:
Siena was our favorite. Florence was nearby.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano in Val di Pesa is the nearest town, but is not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Great restaurants are nearby.
Directions:
We used a GPS. We really needed it to get around.

Enjoyed Most:
The view.

Tips or Restaurants:
Nello in San Casciano.

Jane, October

Overall:
Wonderful- we were in love with the place. This Villa was beyond our expectations. It was glorious. Take me back anytime.
Enjoyed Most:
Attention to all details. The furnishings, the view, the staff, all were wondertul. The grounds of the estate were so nice as was the pool. The villa itself was roomy, the kitchen was well equipped with pots and pans, etc, and the view from the bedrooms was fabulous.
Surrounding Area:
The perfect place to stay if you are visiting the villages of Tuscany or wanting a relaxing time there.
Tips or Restaurants:
Everything was there, even a washer.
Directions:
Used a GPS, but it is not far from a large highway.
Check In Out:

Our stay was phenomenal. The property was divine. The personnel were more than accommodating. The trip truly was picturesque, peaceful, and completely renovating! Thank you.
Enjoyed Most:
The quaintness and authenticity of the property, the view, and THE SWIMMING POOL!
Enjoyed Least:
No air conditioning...it was unseasonably hot while we were there.
Surrounding Area:
The view--it was breathtaking.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town we visited was San Casciano. It was NOT within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Our favorite restaurant was Nello....certainly try the figs and gorgonzola if the figs are in season of course. It was so welcoming to simply allow the waiter to bring us what he thought we should try. We weren't let down.
Directions:
The directions we received from RentVillas could be more descriptive. We did rent a GPS, which made finding the place easier. We highly recommend a GPS.

Overall:
We had a wonderful time at Machiavelli 4. The staff were so cordial and responded to our needs with pleasure and effectiveness.
Enjoyed Most:
Location was terrific. We were able to get to surrounding towns as well as Florence with ease. The swimming pool was wonderful. There was a great sense of privacy in our house and on the grounds.
Enjoyed Least:
The single biggest problem was the heat. The bedrooms remained hot despite the fan that was provided.
Surrounding Area:
Of course, the Tuscan countryside is spectacular. We enjoyed walking, biking, and driving everywhere.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano in Val de Pesa, the nearby town, had everything we needed. It was a 15-minute drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
We brought a roll of mosquito netting and some duck tape. This proved invaluable. For restaurants, we definitely recommend the Restaurant in Lamole. Fantastic food in a spectacular location. Make reservations a day ahead to get a table along the front of the veranda for the best views.
Directions:
We had a GPS.
Check In Out:
Perfect.

Overall:
We had a wonderful time. From the time we arrived the staff made every effort to fill us in on the property and surrounding areas and they offered to book us dinners in a local restaurant that was really great. By the time we left, we felt like locals and will definitely go back, but probably for longer next time. There is still so much to see and do. Cami from Rentvillas.com was outstanding. She made the best suggestions and was super efficient in responding to queries. I will not hesitate to book through them again.
Enjoyed Most:
I can't begin to pick 1 favorite thing about the place!!! the property is steeped in history and has some wonderful stories to tell. The kids loved the pool and the gardens. The cottage we stayed in was roomy and was filled with gorgeous antiques; it has been restored tastefully but in such a way that I really felt at home.
Surrounding Area:
The country side is magnificent. You feel as if you are in a movie--all the colors are intensely bright. I enjoyed the little winding roads and at some times we felt as if we were the only people there.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano was the closest town and we found almost everything we needed there. We were only half and hour from Firenze so it was easy to visit for a few hours and then be back at the villa for an afternoon swim.
Tips or Restaurants:
Remember to ask the staff in the office when the shops are open as each town seems to play by different rules. Any time we wanted to eat out, they were willing to make the reservations, which was a great help. We ate at il Fedino in San Casciano on our first night and it was magical--the view, service, and food were all great. San Gimignano is a village close to the villa; we got there early and loved it. They have a gelato shop in the town square that sell's the world's best ice cream...wow, but it was amazing. We took everything that Rentvillas suggested and were not disappointed. I suggest reading the booklet they send and make the most of evry moment.
Directions:
Used Tom Tom GPS and seldom went wrong. I'm not sure how we managed before technology! It saves time, reducea stress, and I think is a must when traveling in a foreign country.
Check In Out:
The staff had refreshments waiting, showed us the villa, and went out of their way to make us feel at home.

Overall:
Very good. My wife and I walked in the mornings and the views were great. This was a great place to use as our base in the Tuscany area.
Enjoyed Most:
The location, views, and history.
Enjoyed Least:
The WiFi was very weak and spotty. The showers need some sort of curtain to keep water from splashing everywhere.
Surrounding Area:
We had a car and drove each day to a different area. There are many places to see and this was a perfect place to come back to each evening.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino was about 2 km away and San Casciano was about 6 km away. Neither was within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
There is a great restaurant in Bargino called Trattoria del Pesce. We went twice and it was excellent. The COOP in San Casciano was a great place to go to stock up on food, wine, etc. We went almost everyday.

Overall:
Incredible, we loved it! We wish we could have stayed longer.
Enjoyed Most:
The views were breathtaking. The history of the castle and the well kept villa with authentic architecture. We also loved the staff. They were a fun part of our trip as they helped us with planning, directions, and we just liked talking to them!
Enjoyed Least:
The showers could have been cleaner.
Surrounding Area:
Close proximity to Florence, Siena, and Chianti area. Back roads and highway autostrada were both easily accessible. We loved exploring Chianti small towns the most.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano and Bargino are the closest towns, but you need to drive to both.
Tips or Restaurants:
We took the bus from San Casciano to Florence and it was easy, and beautiful. No parking worries. Make sure you taste the wine at the property - it is delicious. Make sure you make plans to go back! Make sure you eat at home and enjoy the sunset from the villa some nights. It is incredible!

Overall:
Wonderful... everyone was so helpful and accommodating.
Enjoyed Most:
The facilities were wonderful, but the views were incredible.
Enjoyed Least:
Not a thing! Our weather wasn't great, but who cares with a view like that.
Surrounding Area:
The small towns with their mom and pop groceries and the convenience.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino was to closest town, but it was not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
There are some incredible small restaurants in some of the small towns. Look for where the locals are eating. We even had a wonderful lunch at a truck stop.
Directions:
We had excellent directions and we did not have a GPS. We had good maps from the car rental.

Bonnie , May

Overall:
The villa met our needs perfectly. The grounds were gorgeous and peaceful, and the villa was impeccably restored. The girls in the office were very gracious and helpful. There were some activities: on-site pool, ping pong, WiFi in the office, wine and olive oil tasting, and the location was convenient by car to most of the towns in Tuscany.
Enjoyed Most:
We were in awe of the history of the castle and surrounding villas, the beauty of the grounds, the fruit trees, and we even enjoyed the company of the puppies that greeted us at the front desk! Our favorite experience of the entire week was the wine and olive oil tasting hosted on the grounds.
Enjoyed Least:
The entire experience was excellent, and I would definitely recommend this property. I would advise guests that they must rent a car. Getting to the villa by any other mode of transportation would be very expensive, and you may feel stranded once you get there. The road up to the villa has multiple switchback turns, but once you get the hang of it, it is fine. Being out in the country, I'd also recommend a GPS. Although the roads are nice, many don't have signs. If you heed these warnings, then there is nothing to be disliked about the property or the surrounding area.
Surrounding Area:
Tuscany is beautiful. The area around the villa is just as beautiful, if not more beautiful, than many of the better known Tuscan towns. My favorite town was Montalcino. My traveling companions loved Volterra the most.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town was Bargino, but we never went there. We went to the next closest town called San Casciano - slightly bigger town - many times throughout the week for groceries and dinner. There is also a tiny community at the top of the hill called Montefiridolfi. That is within walking distance, but there isn't much to see besides a vineyard.
Tips or Restaurants:
Things to bring - GPS, electricity converters, and groceries. It would be best to go to the villa first to take inventory of what you'll need. Sometimes guests leave napkins, oils, or spices behind like we did. Also if you want to access the Internet, bring a laptop. Our phones didn't have strong enough connections.
Directions:
Either rent a car with a GPS or bring one from home - just make sure to download the coordinates prior to leaving for your trip.
Check In Out:
Check-in and check-out took only a few minutes. They were willing to let us check out the night before since we had an early morning departure.

Erin, October

Overall:
Loved it. Great and helpful staff.
Enjoyed Most:
The ambiance and the view. It was also extremely well located for visiting Pisa, Florence, Siena, etc.
Enjoyed Least:
Really, there would be nothing. I guess the barbecue could be improved as it was ineffective.
Surrounding Area:
The beautiful countryside with rolling hills, villages, vineyards, etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino was about 1 and 1/2 km. It would be a demanding walk, as the road was steep. San Casciano in Val di Pesa was about eight km. It had a number of small shops and a COOP Supermarket which had an extensive selection, including very good bakery, cheese, etc. Like a fine North American deli!
Tips or Restaurants:
We found the villa to be very well equipped. About the only thing required was a hair dryer to operate on 240 volts. We found lots of good restaurants. La Bulle in Bargino and we particularly liked Cantenetta Nono in San Casciano recommended by the staff at the Casa. Slightly further afield, one of the best meals we had was at Ristorante Il Piccolo Castello in Monteriggioni, about thirty km south, just off the main road to Siena
