Customer Reviews

Overall:
The stay at Nostradamus was tremendous. I would highly recommend it, especially for families. It is walking distance to St. Remy, food, shopping, and markets, yet it was still fairly quiet and peaceful. Wonderful location, very safe, and very comfortable property.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, Location, Location! Although there is a multi-storied condo complex over looking the property which diminished privacy a bit, it was still fairly close driving to Arles, Aix en Provence, Avignon, etc. Walking to town was also extremely convenient.
Enjoyed Least:
Really enjoyed the property and Tracy the property manager was very nice. We had a couple surprises: The hot water heater died on us the last night we were there, the township came in and set up a microphone in the middle of the property for half the week (testing noise level from condo), and this was kind of awkward. Editor's Note: Please note that the water heater was repaired and the microphone was removed. August, 2013
Surrounding Area:
Loved the town of St. Remy de Provence and of course the whole Provence region.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St. Remy de Provence was in walking distance to just about anything you could possibly need.
Tips or Restaurants:
Everything was available at the house.
Directions:
We had no problem at all finding the house. We did have a GPS and it led us straight to the house.
Check In Out:
Tracy, the property manager was very accommodating and extremely helpful. She was accessible and an absolute joy to work with. She was excellent.

Lawrence, July

Overall:
The overall experience was very good. The villa is in excellent conditon, very clean, and is generally well-maintained.
Enjoyed Most:
It is very secure, is all on one level, and close to the center of the village.
Enjoyed Least:
An apartment/house with several condos has been built next door and at least 15 apartments look out over the villa property. When this complex is opened, all privacy and quiet will be lost and the villa will loose it's most valuable asset.
Surrounding Area:
Its proximity to the center of the town. St. Remy is a real gem.
Tips or Restaurants:
Be sure to inquire about construction and if the neighboring building has been opened for occupancy.

Reid, October

Overall:
It was a wonderful week! We loved the house, the village and the surrounding areas. The house and grounds were enclosed, so it was very private and peaceful, but still walking distance to the village. We spent our days wandering and finding the markets, and chose to cook and enjoy each other's company for dinner. We would plan the next day over wine and cheese before dinner. A fantastic vacation.
Enjoyed Most:
Quiet and secluded.
Enjoyed Least:
The washer and dryer took a long time to finish and the capacities were very small. Oh, and forget your flat iron. The current there does not like them. (Seems like this is all over France.)
Surrounding Area:
We particularly liked the local markets as well as the French people, who were very cordial and helpful to us. We always found something in the area that captured our interest, from Van Gogh's mental hospital to Avignon's Palais de Papes to the various Roman ruins.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We were at the outskirts of the center of St. Remy, so we walked there almost every day, usually to a patisserie.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a washcloth and soap!

Overall:
Fabulous. Wonderful property.
Enjoyed Most:
The easy walk to town, the lovely pool and nice kitchen.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing
Surrounding Area:
The 2 minute walk into town for dinner and shopping.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The property is a 2 minute walk into the heart of St. Remy. The nearest small town was maybe 20 minutes driving to Les Baux.
Tips or Restaurants:
Don't need to bring anything. Even hairdryers are provided and the kitchen is fully stocked.

Andee, September

Overall:
Very enjoyable! The house could not have been better. The location was exactly what we were looking for. The house was clean, well equipped, and comfortable. The kids loved the pool and the big yard. There were no problems of any sort.
Enjoyed Most:
Its location and the comfortable atmosphere.
Enjoyed Least:
There were no shortcomings as far as we could tell. One thing you should be aware of: The lot next door now has a nearly completed two story, 12-unit condo complex. The balconies of the second floor units overlook Nostradamus's yard, pool and patio. When these units are finished and rented out there will be a significant lack of privacy. I noticed the owner has planted bamboo along the wall between the properties but it will be a year or two before they grow enough to block the neighbor's view.
Surrounding Area:
The proximity of shops and resturants.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Saint Remy was within walking distance.
Directions:
Used GPS.
Check In Out:
Key manager was very helpful.

Geoffrey, June

Overall:
Fantastic!! We were so pleased with the entire experience. The villa was in a fabulous location, so close to the town of St. Remy. It's only a 2 block walk but was so quiet we didnt realize how close to town we were. The villa was well equipped and in excellent condition. Very spacious and comfortable, so much so that we didnt want to leave.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, Location, Location. I chose the villa without knowing much about St. Remy, but we couldn't have picked a better place to base ourselves in Provence. The town was incredible and the villa was perfectly situated for sightseeing in the area.
Enjoyed Least:
That we only had a week stay. I wish we had booked at least 2 weeks. One week was not enough to enjoy it all.
Surrounding Area:
Everything. The food, the wine, the scenery, the people. It was much better than I had ever expected. We were so close to so many lovely villages and historical sites.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St. Remy village was a 3 minute walk from the villa. It was so close but yet so quiet and private. Perfectly situated if you want to go into town and shop, eat and drink without having to drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
The villa was so well equipped and the property manager was so helpful. All you really need to do is buy your food and wine for the week; they have everything else for you. We love to cook so we had most of our meals at the villa. The food is so incredible it is a cook's delight. We did have dinner one night at Bistrot des Alpilles which was recommended by a few other guests and we loved it. The restaurant is right in town and only a 5 minute walk from the villa.
Directions:
We did use a GPS, which was very helpful. The directions provided were fine and we would have found the villa either way.
Check In Out:
We had a bit of car trouble coming from Paris and were running about 3 hours late. Tracey, the property manager, was very understanding and made sure that she checked in with us along the way and to let us know that someone would be there to meet us when we arrived. The villa was in excellent condition upon our arrival.

Sharon, September

Overall:
Fantastic.
Enjoyed Most:
The house was just lovely in all respects.
Enjoyed Least:
Electrical outlets didn't accommodate our adapters, but we figured it out.
Surrounding Area:
St Remy and Les Baux were fantastic.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St Remy was just down the block, a few minutes walk.
Tips or Restaurants:
Read the restaurant book on the coffee table - a journal of all of the visitors' favorites. Perfect!

Elizabeth, August

Overall:
We loved the villa. The pool was very well maintained and the house was very clean. The windows were large with beautiful shutters. The villa was large and very well equipped.
Enjoyed Most:
The location to the main shopping and restaurant area of Saint-Remy was excellent!
Enjoyed Least:
The laundry facilities are in the garage.
Surrounding Area:
The location of Saint-Remy is superb. There are many interesting places to visit within a short car ride, i.e. Arles, Les Baux, Avignon, Le Camargue, ext.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The heart of Saint-Remy is a 5 minute walk from the villa.
Tips or Restaurants:
There are many good restaurants nearby. In Saint-Remy you can purchase many types of olive oil and vinegars to bring home. They are superb! Make sure that you can accommodate the weight requirements for your luggage if you are taking a flight home.
Directions:
We used a GPS that was provided in our car rental. It was awesome. Make sure if you rent a car you get one with a GPS built in. It made our trip so much easier.

Laurie, August

Overall:
Our overall experience at Nostradamus was absolutely wonderful. We truly enjoyed our stay there and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone planning a vacation in Provence.
Enjoyed Most:
There were many things we enjoyed about the property (too long to list them all) but a few stood out in particular. First, the pool came in very handy, especially with the very warm days we experienced during our stay (temperature was around 35 degrees Celsius for about half of the week). The kids simply loved it. Second, the location of the property is very convenient. It's the perfect central point for day trips to Avignon, Arles, Les Baux de Provence, Orange, Uzès, Nîmes and many other interesting places to discover in Provence. And in Saint-Rémy itself, it's only a short walk to the 'downtown' area where you will find many restaurants and shops. Third, the gardens in the backyard are simply beautiful and make the overall experience even more relaxing. And finally, the fact that we were able to rent it for half price can be considered a steal.
Enjoyed Least:
There were not many things we did not like about this property. We can think of the following four items which, in our opinion, were not so great: 1- There seems to be somewhat of an issue with ants. 2- Fridge: the door does not always close properly. 3- Fans: The fans in the bedrooms are old, but functional. 4- TV: the remote control doesn't work well and we would have liked to have a few more French channels.
Surrounding Area:
Everything! The town of Saint-Rémy itself, the neighborhood which was very quiet, the proximity to all those great villages and towns in Provence, the nice shops and restaurants, the pool, the beautiful gardens, etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Saint-Rémy itself. The property is only a 5-10 minutes walk to the restaurants and shops in the heart of town.
Tips or Restaurants:
Our suggestions for future renters would be to read the description carefully and have a good look at the pictures. What you see is what you get. There were no bad surprises for us and the property met our expectations. For the restaurants, we really enjoyed Le Bar Tabac des Alpilles. We thought it was our best meal in Saint-Rémy. We also liked La Cantina very much. Very good Italian food at very reasonable prices. These are the two that stood out for us.
Directions:
No additional comments with regards to the directions to the property. We did not use a GPS. We circled around the loop a couple of times but we finally made our way to the house.
Check In Out:
No additional comments. Everything went very smoothly.

Martin, July

Overall:
A perfect villa for six ladies.
Enjoyed Most:
It's a very private, safe , clean and pleasant villa. There is a very good bakery close by for breakfast pastries and quiche. It's only a short walk to a lovely village with numerous cafes and shops.
Enjoyed Least:
There was no drapery on the bathroom window.
Surrounding Area:
Easy to drive with good signage. So much to see in a small area.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St. Remy. Only one and one half blocks to town.
Tips or Restaurants:
St Remy has 36 restaurants. Enjoy.
Directions:
The map needs more details from the center of town to the villa address.
Check In Out:
I had trouble contacting the key holder Tracy by phone about the check in time.

Amelia, June

Overall:
We absolutely loved the villa. So lovely and the location was perfect. Such a charming town to call home for a week. We definitely want to come back again to this delightful villa!
Enjoyed Most:
The outdoor patio and pool are fully furnished with quality furnishings--homey and comfortable. Also well stocked with maps and local area info. Tracy the property manager was very warm and kind and helpful. Could not have been nicer!
Enjoyed Least:
The only slight negative was not related to the property...it simply rained much more than usual the week we were there. But obviously not the villa's shortcoming!
Surrounding Area:
St. Remy was chock full of great shops and wonderful restaurants and very nice people. Wonderful to be able to walk everywhere.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St. Remy (see above) Yes! Delightful!
Tips or Restaurants:
Just a tip: It was very easy to get around Provence by rental car. The roads are so well marked! Very impressive! A rental car gives you so much flexibility. I highly recommend it.
Check In Out:
Tracy was so kind to inform us to stop at the grocery store before coming since the store would be closed the next day Sunday.

Jean, June

Overall:
We had a wonderful time visiting the surrounding towns. Enjoyed Kayaking, hiking and exploring the Alpilles and shopping. We even made it as far as Monaco and Cannes on a side trip.
Enjoyed Most:
Great location a few blocks from St Remy with all the old narrow streets and alleyways.
Enjoyed Least:
Construction, but that was expected and more than made up for by lower rental cost.
Surrounding Area:
Visited Avignon, the open market at Isle sure la Sorgue, Arles, the medieval mountaintop ruins of Les Baux and the Fountaine de Vaucluse
Nearby Events or Locales:
Saint Remy was within a few blocks and very enjoyable.
Tips or Restaurants:
I would suggest resting up before the trip as there's plenty to do to keep you busy.
Directions:
We used a GPS and had no problems finding the address.
Check In Out:
Check in was excellent with no issues.

Robert , May

Overall:
Wonderful. Great touring, great food and great people and culture.
Enjoyed Most:
The outside was wonderful and the inside was quaint.
Enjoyed Least:
I found the beds uncomfortable.
Surrounding Area:
Close proximity to downtown. Great restaurants and galleries.
Tips or Restaurants:
Hotel of Godon downtown. Excellent salads and gracious owners and help.
Directions:
Did not have a car.

Joan , October

Overall:
This was a great choice for our family.
Enjoyed Most:
We loved eating all our meals outdoors. The pool was refreshing after our hot and sometimes dusty day trips. The proximity to town can't be beat.
Enjoyed Least:
The phone kept ringing every few minutes at times, apparently because of marketing calls. We had to take it off the hook. The internet cut out once, but the property manager fixed it that day.
Surrounding Area:
We felt it was accessible to so many nice areas to visit: les Baux, Avignon, Arles, Roussillon, the village of Bories, and many more.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St Remy de Provence was the closest town, definitely within walking distance, roughly 5 min. It's a great town, large enough to have a decent grocery store and interesting places to visit: Glanum, Sanitarium where Van Gogh lived the last year of his life, but small enough to be easily navigable.
Tips or Restaurants:
There are two restaurants in nearby Paradou that we'd recommend: Le Petit Bistro and Bistrot Paradou.
Check In Out:
The property managers were very nice, friendly, helpful, available during the week and prompt when we were ready to check out.

Susan, August

Overall:
Fantastic location with wonderful amenities, extremely well situated to town.
Enjoyed Most:
It provided an experience of the local culture and environs, on a lovely property, while integrating some of the comforts of American homes, such as well functioning showers, well equipped kitchen and laundry.
Enjoyed Least:
There is not adequate lighting for reading and working. This was a problem for a family of 6 academics.
Surrounding Area:
St Remy and areas around it give one the feel of being in the heart of France. Beautiful scenery and excellent foods. St. Remy, itself, affords the opportunity to visit Roman ruins, enjoy some very fine restaurants, and shop in some lovely boutiques and galleries. This is the "whole" vacation experience.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St. Remy was easily accessible by foot.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring reading lamp devices. You need also to bring extra soap and shampoo. Also, even if you have studied French, a food dictionary was quite helpful. Bring an extra suitcase for the gifts you'll want to bring home from Market Day in St. Remy on Wednesdays. Un Ete at St Remy was a great restaurant find. Order pasta Forestiere.

Richard, April

Overall:
If you are looking for peace, quiet and privacy within a short walk of a busy town this is the place for you.
Enjoyed Most:
The privacy and seclusion whilst being so close to the town.
Enjoyed Least:
Internet didn't work! Neither did the main CD player. However, there is a portable CD player. For us this wasn't a problem.
Surrounding Area:
All of the main sights were within a short drive.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St Remy de Provence was a 2-minute walk away.
Tips or Restaurants:
Kitchen is well stocked with appliances, so you don't need to bring anything. Many good restaurants, eg, Bistrot des Alpilles, Xa, Cafe des Varieties.
Directions:
Directions from Avignon TGV would be helpful as many people will arrive from Paris.
Check In Out:
Make sure the electronic appliances are working!

Ian, June

Overall:
It was the perfect location for St. Remy and to the surrounding country. The driving is fantastic because the roundabouts are so well designed and the village names are posted. It's impossible to get lost. HOWEVER, driving in the larger cities is difficult because there are no road signs posted. Street names are sometimes found on buildings.
Enjoyed Most:
The property was so convenient to the village. We visited in early Spring, so the pool was not open. The house was open, airy and fully furnished. It also included the extra amenities such as a hair dryer, separate bathroom facilities for the three rooms and the most important maps, books and tons of reading material for the surrounding area villages, wineries, restaurants and special places that should not be missed. The guest book was an extra bonus, because visitors were able to share their experiences and pass on great information that enhanced our stay in Provence.
Enjoyed Least:
You need a frying pan.
Surrounding Area:
The wonderful people, restaurants, countryside views. I loved Les Baux!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Aside from St. Remy... which was down the block from our house, Les Baux was the closest small town. It was not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Le Source was fantastic. Le Apostrophe has great bread and an excellent Thai fish dish. Bring instant coffee. Leave lots of room in your luggage for bringing back wonderful table cloths and pictures. Make a point of going to Market day on Wednesday. Christian Etienne in Avignon is absolutely out of this world! READ the book of directions given to you the day you arrive. It has all the important information about how to use the phones, TV etc...When parking in large public garages, take your ticket with you and have it punched and paid for at the small kiosks located within the garage. It will save you from great embarrassment when everyone else is trying to leave and you're blocking the exit because the machine won't take your money. Also, some foreign cars only go in reverse if you lift up the knob on the stick shift before trying to shift gears into reverse. I had to have wonderful local man show me how to put my car in reverse so that I could leave the train station After
Directions:
I received great directions from the people at Hertz car rental. They showed me how to get out of the train station and go a faster, more direct route than the one that was sent to me.
