Set into dramatic mountain ranges, this charming inland area is know for its small, historic towns and vineyards. In the countryside you'll find fascinating traces of Roman heritage, as well as a glimpse into the traditional Provencal way of life. If you wish to linger in small, family-owned cafés or strike up conversations with the local baker, butcher, or grocer, then look no further than towns such as St. Remy, Vaison-la-Romaine, and Gordes. If you have a full day, then visit Avignon. It is a beautiful medieval city with a perfectly preserved historic center. Rich in art and history, the city of the popes comes alive in July and early August during the Festival d'Avignon. Curious to know how the popes once lived? Visit the fortress-like Palais des Papes, the city's most dramatic monument. Les Baux, a striking fortified village with an 11th century citadel, and Glanum, an ancient Neolithic settlement that was subsequently inhabited by Gallo-Greeks and later Gallo-Romans, are also fascinating day trips.

Situated between Cavaillon and Manosque, the Luberon is a rocky, wooded valley with small, charming hilltop villages and a regional park, Parc Naturel Regional du Luberon, all of which make perfect daytrips from our Luberon rentals and villas. Although not particularly charming, the large town of Apt is a good base for exploration and has a weekly open air market on Saturdays that includes a variety of produce and delicacies, plus live music. The Luberon has cold winters and dry, warm summers, with a more alpine climate to the north, and Mediterranean climate to the south. Heading west from the Luberon, the picturesque villages of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and Gordes are wonderful stops. Just north of Gordes, the Abbaye de Senanque is a spectacular sight. Surrounded by fields of lavender, this 12th century working monastery has a lovely gift shop (we recommend the lavender essential oil), church, and cloisters.

Until the papacy was moved to Rome in 1378, Avignon was the great city of the popes. It was Benedict XIII, the last of 9 popes, who built the medieval walls that still enclose the carefully preserved historic center and form a complete loop around the city. While the city's most imposing and fascinating monument is the Palais des Papes, the Petit Palais and the Musee' Calvet are also not to be missed. When you've had your fill of sightseeing, the place de L'Horloge, the city's main square, is lined with bustling cafés. It's also the site of the Hotel de Ville and clock tower. If you can handle the toasty summer temperatures, visit our Avignon, Provence villa rentals in the city during the Festival d'Avignon in July and early August. Combining classic music and a variety of international performing arts exhibitions, the festival is extremely popular, drawing upwards of 150,000 people each summer.

The fertile countryside northeast of Avignon is dominated by the outline of Mont Ventoux. The mountain offers a spectacular view in all directions, though howling winds often make the summit somewhat inhospitable. For the hale and hearty, trails depart from the hamlets of Les Colombets and Les Febriers. Also stunning are the Dentelles, a row of tooth-like limestone pinnacles located just south of Vaison-la-Romaine. From our Provence villa rentals in Ventoux, Vaison itself makes an interesting daytrip as it has a medieval center and ruined castle. The remains of two excavated Roman districts can also be visited. Arles, with its well-preserved Roman arena, and Oranges, with its Roman theatre (site of the Choregies music festival) are also worthwhile destinations. Known for its wines, this area is home to wine-producing villages such as Gigondas, Beaume-de-Venise, Sablet, Seguret, and Vacqueyras. We recommend passing a lazy afternoon visiting the many tasting rooms!
