For our purposes, this region encompasses the Riviera dei Fiori (San Remo), the Riviera Levante (Portofino, Rapallo, Santa Margherita, Genoa), and the southern Ligurian coast (Cinque Terre). Considered the Las Vegas of Italy, San Remo has absorbed some of nearby Monaco's casino flair. Nonetheless, it's worth a visit, particularly during January's Festival della Canzone Italiana, when professional musicians come to perform the latest in Italian music. It's a major televised event all over Italy. Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a stop over destination and not the place to spend any time. Head, instead, to Portofino or Rapallo, small coastal towns west of Genoa. They're lovely, ritzy spots known for attracting the jet set. Santa Margherita is situated between Rapallo and Portofino; it's a convenient base from which to explore both areas. Cinque Terre is an isolated collection of five small fishing villages linked by rail and hiking trails. Boasting incredible natural beauty and a low-key vibe, it's a fantastic destination any time of the year.

La Spezia is the largest city on the Riviera Levante. It is an excellent jumping-off point for your coastal adventures, whether by rail or car. There are many stunning towns to visit on this stretch of coast, including the Cinque Terre, a collection of five coastal villages linked by footpaths and railroad, and the elegant villages of the Portofino peninsula: Santa Margherita Ligure, Camogli, and Portofino. Whatever your agenda, while staying in our private villas here, be sure to bring good walking shoes. Your strenuous hiking will be rewarded with breathtaking views! Renting a boat for a day or two is another great way to see the coast; there are many protected coves in which to anchor.

Home of Christopher Columbus, Genoa has been an important port city since the days of the Roman Empire. Rivaling Marseille as the most important Mediterranean port, Genoa was at the height of its glory during the Renaissance. Traces of its golden past can still be admired in the Caruggi District, its medieval center. Beyond the historic core, Genoa stretches along 35 miles of coastline. It is a vibrant, bustling, modern city and serves as a good point of arrival and departure for your exploration of the Riviera's gems. Genoa is within easy reach of the beautiful village of Rapallo, as well as Nervi, Pegli, Varazze, and Cervo.
