A city of bicyclists, Tuscany's Lucca is refined and elegant. Its tree-shaded battlements are actually some of the most formidable---and best-preserved---bastions in all of Italy. Birthplace and stomping grounds of Giacomo Puccini, Lucca boasts a small museum in the composer's birthplace. The city also hosts one of Europe's most important antique markets on the third Sunday of every month. Other must-see sights include the Catedrale di San Martino (Lucca's Duomo), San Michele in Foro (a lovely Romanesque church), and Piazza Anfiteatro, the remains of a Roman amphitheater. Hikers and nature lovers should head due north to the Garfagnana, a wooded area that is home to the eastern slopes of the Apuan Alps.

Rent a villa in Northern Lucca, an area rich in Italian cultural history. A car or a tour can take you through the Villas of Lucca, a whole chain of magnificent residences and their gardens in the north of the city. The string ends at Collodi, the birthplace of the author of Pinocchio. Today there is a Pinocchio Park, a must-see for those with children (although you yourself may want to read the original book before visiting, as this isn't your typical Disney fare). In Barga, on the edge of the Apuane Alps, is one of the most beautiful examples of a Tuscan walled city, and refreshingly free of the normal flow of tourists. Another small medieval town, Pietrasanta, is located near the coast at the foothills of the Alps. This was the place Michelangelo came to seek his best stone, and even today the place is the home of many fine artisans. If you're looking for a taste of authentic local life, there are also a number of small villages in the area, such as San Martino in Freddana or the quaint spa town of Bagni di Lucca.

South of Lucca lie the beautiful Pisan hills. Nestled in the Arno valley, this area is a rarely visited segment of the Tuscan countryside. Although many travelers may make the trek to Vinci, birthplace of Leonardo and home to a tiny museum in his honor, few may make a stop at historic San Miniato, former outpost of the Holy Roman Empire known for its white truffles.
