About The Experience

Looking to explore the Chianti region of Tuscany with all the comforts of home and more? This accommodation in a Tuscany villa has it all, from a huge swimming pool to sprawling grounds and all the amenities indoors. One of the owners, who lives on the estate in the family villa, is American and she's furnished this holiday villa in Tuscany to American tastes. So relax! Lounge at this Tuscany vacation villa, take a refreshing bike ride to nearby Certaldo (we highly recommend exploring the Pretorio Palace), or take a day trip to Florence and beyond! There is another villa, Villa Sella, right next door (with its own pool), as well as two recently completed restored apartments, which share the pool with Villa Certaldo and the owners.

Location Description

The property is located four kilometers from Certaldo, which has all the necessities combined with small-town charm. Pick up groceries or eat out in the modern section and spend the rest of your day exploring Certaldo Alta, the old medieval village. In July, you may find yourself in the midst of a lively Renaissance festival, complete with street artists, actors, musicians, and more. And don't forget to get your fill of medieval architecture! You can explore the Pretorio Palace or marvel at the profile Certaldo castle cuts across the sky. Like museums? Visit the house of Giovanni Boccaccio (author of the Decameron). Day trips can take you to San Gimignano, Siena, and Florence. Pisa and Florence airports are easy arrival points where you can rent a car.

Exterior Description
(300,000 m2/3,229,173 ft2)

Enter the estate of this historic 14th century villa via a private gate and find yourself in a garden filled with cypress, pine, and oak trees. The historical significance of the estate is underlined by the fact that it was occupied during the month of July 1944 by German forces and used as a command post, and subsequently liberated by allied forces as the front passed through the region. Several underground WWII hideouts are still visible in the nature reserve woods of the estate. On the estate is a large shared swimming pool, open from early May to early October, (16m x 6m, 0.8-2m deep) surrounded by terra cotta decking, while over 35 lemon trees release refreshing scents into the air. From the garden, you'll look towards the medieval town of San Gimignano. Although the estate is shared, you have a private 100 m2 yard with garden furniture and a barbeque. You will also have a 60 m2 courtyard with lemon trees and a covered terrace overlooking vineyards and the valley. One third of the remaining land is a nature reserve—a wooded area inhabited by wild pheasants, rabbits, boar, and hedgehogs. Another part of the estate is used for olive tree cultivation, and there is also a resident horse that enjoys free grazing around an ancient Roman fresh water spring. Private parking is available within the property grounds.

A dining room has a table seating ten, with large arched windows overlooking the countryside. 19th century oil paintings depict members of the Medici family. The adjacent kitchen has an electric stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, American coffee machine, espresso cappuccino maker, and a small breakfast table. There is also a guest WC with toilet and sink. The ground floor bedroom is wheelchair friendly, and includes a 160 cm queen-size bed, a writing desk, easy chair, and wardrobe. Don't have any negatives.

Certaldo was a perfect town and not a lot of tourists. It is perfect for day trips to all of Tuscany via either a car or the train.
Nearby Events or Locales:
No, the town was a few minutes away by car but that was never an issue.

Elizabeth has all of the good spots listed on very detailed lists.

They worked fine.

Elizabeth was the hidden gem of the trip. She was always helpful and never intrusive.

Overall:
We thoroughly enjoyed our two weeks in Villa Certaldo. We had stayed there 11 years ago and we enjoyed it more this time than we did the first and that is saying something. Elizabeth is a gracious hostess, easily accessible and very knowledgeable about the area. She keeps a binder in the house which has a brief history of the family and property, instructions on operating all of the appliances in the house and directions and suggestions for restaurants, grocery stores and where to park to take advantage of the train station in town.
Enjoyed Most:
The location was far enough in the country to have a real Tuscan feel yet close enough to restaurants and the train station to make it an excellent staging point for our two week stay. Sitting on the loggia overlooking the countryside was a great way to wake up in the morning with your coffee or relaxing with your wine at night. We enjoyed spending time with Elizabeth and her family - close by but never intruding. The property is beautiful and has several rental units.
Enjoyed Least:
We really didn't have any issues with any aspect of the property and our stay.
Surrounding Area:
The beauty of the Tuscan hills with views of vineyards and olive groves and even some wildlife - we heard pheasants almost every day - saw a few and even saw a roe deer one night while driving to the local pizzeria. It was an easy drive to Siena, San Gimignano, all of the Chianti Classico towns, and just over two hour drive to Assisi. We took the train into Florence several days and took the train to Venice one morning for a nice afternoon tour.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Villa Certaldo is located within walking distance of a Catholic Church and about a two mile drive to the town of Certaldo and Certaldo Alto. A car is necessary to take full advantage of the surrounding area.
Tips or Restaurants:
We had a Garmin GPS that supposedly had the latest Italy , but it was terrible in terms of finding the property and many of the small roads. We found the app Waze to be much better, but it does deplete the battery in your cell phone. Pizzeria Maroni is located about a mile away - a family restaurant offering very good pizza and pasta and the house wine is excellent. Very popular with the locals and reservations are recommended on the weekends. Ristorante Wima's is a few miles away offering very good grilled Tuscan meatspoultry. Osteria Casa Chianti is a fantastic restaurant maybe 7 miles away and shouldn't be missed. Max is a wonderful owner and makes you feel very welcomed. We do regret that the weather wasn't good enough to enjoy their outdoor seating area that has fantastic views. Max also offers cooking classes which I am sure would be great fun! We also enjoyed La Seletta in Certaldo which is a very small restaurant, but has excellent food and a wonderful wine ion - reservations are a must.
Directions:
The directions provided by the hostess were excellent. We had driven up from Rome and had no issues finding the property with her directions even though Garmin couldn't.
Check In Out:
Check in and Check out were very easy - Elizabeth is very accommodating.
