About The Experience

Imagine yourself at this villa in Tuscany: lounging under cameo-pink vaulted ceilings; enjoying a feast in a formal dining hall under an antique chandelier; or drifting off to sleep in a room filled with ancient furniture and delicious trompe l'oeil. The life of a 15th century noble awaits you in this Tuscany villa with a pool near Arezzo, which is where the movie "Life is Beautiful," starring Roberto Benigni, was filmed. Right on the eastern corner of the triangle formed by Siena, Florence, and Arezzo, this elegant Tuscany vacation rental is both well located for day trips-- and an experience in itself!

Location Description

This country villa is located in Borgo a Giovi, a Tuscan neighborhood on the outskirts of the village of Giovi near the river Arno. For easy transportation, the train line Stia-Pratovecchio stops in Giovi, about 500 meters from the villa, and only 300 meters from the villa there is a bus stop. You can also take a nice walk into the villages of Giovi and Ponte alla Chiassa where there is a butcher shop, vegetable stand, bakery, grocery store, bank, pharmacy, newspaper shop, coffee bar and some good restaurants and pizzeria. Both Giovi and the River Arno are within walking distance at about 500 meters away. Nearby Arezzo, the setting for Roberto Benigni's Life is Beautiful, is a city characterized by an array of architectural styles, from Etruscan ruins to the Roman amphitheatre and the Medici Fortress. The first weekend of each month features a popular antique fair, while annually the town hosts a festival called Joust of the Saracens, where all of the citizens dress in medieval attire to watch knights charge at a target (representing the Saracen king). Arezzo also has a train station, convenient for accessing other cities in Tuscany. Further than Arezzo but still close by, you can visit a convent in La Verna and a monastery in Camaldoli. The location of this holiday home is also well situated to day trips throughout Tuscany, including nearby Cortona and Lake Trasimeno, as well as Florence and Siena.

Nearby Attractions: Tennis, horseback riding, golf, beach at Maremma (180 km/112 mi), park by the Arno (500 meters), vineyards, Arezzo (Etruscan ruins, Roman amphitheatre, Medici Fortress, antique fair, Joust of the Saracens, train station), convent in La Verna, monastery in Camaldoli.

Exterior Description

This is an old country manor house which has recently been restored. It is interesting because each of the three stories is from a different century, from the 1500's to the 1900's. The villa is surrounded by two courtyards, a vineyard, and a long cypress path which leads to the main entrance. There is also an above-ground pool (8m x 5m) which is open from May to September, and a private garden (a second garden is designated for the owners) with a pergola, lawn, and porch connected to the kitchen. An internal courtyard has a table and chairs in front of the entrance hall. On the property there is also a chapel from the 18th century. A road runs along the front of the property, so the entrance is in the back.

Customer Reviews

Overall:
We had a great time on our holiday. The villa is unique, which presents some challenges, but offers an authentic experience.
Enjoyed Most:
The dining rooms.
Enjoyed Least:
The beds were firm and the living room was dark so we spent most time in the kitchen.
Surrounding Area:
Traveling to the small towns of Tuscany.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Ponte alla Chiasa - within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Al Principe was a restaurant within walking distance, in Giovi. This place was excellent.
Directions:
We used a GPS.

Overall:
We all agreed that the experience was quite magical. The villa and surroundings lived up to our expectations. My youngest daughter was married at the villa and the support and understanding of the villa's proprietors was very sympathetic.
Enjoyed Most:
For want of a better word, it was genuine. The villa had integrity. It had been lovingly restored to what it was: A house that reflected its roots and and tinkering over the centuries. My grandson initially wasn't too sure about the scary man in the portrait at the bottom of the stairs but that proved to be fleeting and the stone steps were a minor challenge for my granddaughter, but we appreciated the reality of an old, grand, quintessentially Italian home. The owners are also the guardians of s small jewel of a church across the road. Ask if you can see it. Check out the timing of the village "fundraising" dinner. It's a gem. The road is shut off and seating for 400 is spread along the road. No cutlery, just local wine and food. It was like a step back in time.
Enjoyed Least:
Maybe the lack of insect screens on the upper windows, but you know that would have distracted from the chance to throw open the shutters on a sunny Tuscan morning and playing the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet.
Surrounding Area:
The proximity of small town Italy. The 13th century church and its tiny piazza--a stone's throw away was a small Zeffirelli movie set. Then there was the small bakery a kilometre away, the "Bar Sandy" with its lively set of waitresses and small town characters and the "Nonna" who waved to all and sundry driving by. Cortona is 45 minutes away and although it has its share of tourists it is a quintessential Italian hill town full of life and winding streets. Check the "Pane et Vino" restaurant there. The experience and food is outstanding. Simple fare and a collector's wine list.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The name of the nearest village just beyond Giovi escapes me but it is within walking distance but it's not a quick walk. The bakery, bar, drug store, butcher and hardware store are all there. I drove in at 7 AM for fresh croissants each morning.
Tips or Restaurants:
As mentioned by others there are a couple of pizza places nearby. The pizza was cheap and tasty and the beer even cheaper. The owner gives you a quick run through the town and will point them out. The restaurant, "Trattoria Principia," near the 13th century church is excellent. Bring a decent bottle of red from your home country and share it with a local. It will do you wonders.
Directions:
We used a GPS and it got us to Giovi without error but the turn-off to the Villa is well concealed, but fairly quickly identified. GPS coordinates would be of help. A short primer on the process of Italian toll roads would also help, I think. Coming off a long flight, wending one's way through the horrors of car hiring at Da Vinci, and then hitting the freeway with Ferraris an inch from your fender can befuddle the most astute driver at the tollgate.
Check In Out:
This procedure went without a hitch.

Overall:
Wonderful.
Enjoyed Most:
Beautiful views and exterior.
Enjoyed Least:
While the bathrooms were fine, there was only one with a real stand-alone shower. We 3 couples shared.
Surrounding Area:
Great restaurant recommendations from villa.
Nearby Events or Locales:
You could walk to Giovi
Tips or Restaurants:
Ask the owner for recommendations. Il Pistorio fish restaurant was fantastic.
Directions:
A little confusing as the sign at the turnoff does not say Giovi, but we figured it out.
