Customer Reviews
Enjoyed Most:
The cottage is on the edge of town, so is quite pastoral, but a very good local pub-restaurant is only a few block easy walking away. We had a lovely walk in the woods. The bluebells were in bloom and the woods were carpeted in blue. The kitchen was well stocked, including many spices and the welcoming basket kept us supplied for breakfast for most of the week. The housekeeper, was very friendly and showed us before and after pictures of both the cottage and the manor house.
Enjoyed Least:
Because the house is so old, several 100 years, there is a decided tilt to the floors in the bedrooms, which could be unsettling if one is unsure on their feet. Also, there is no grocery store close, although the bakery and the shop both carry some basic items like milk and eggs.
Surrounding Area:
We found the location quite central to exploring both the Lake District, about a 30 minute drive to the edge and points east. Although we did not go to Scotland, it certainly was close enough for a day drive. In addition, within a relatively close distance, there were several prehistoric sites, and some British Heritage and National Trust locations, as well as private sites. We had some wonderful day excursions.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We were right on the edge of Melmerby. The bakery is about 2 blocks away, the pub-restaurant about 3 blocks and the shop a few doors down from the pub. All were easily within walking distance. Also, there are some public walking paths crossing the property.
Tips or Restaurants:
The owners live in London but the property has been in the husband's family for generations. After his grandmother, who was living in the manor house, died, they started fixing it up. The manor house, Edward's Hall, which sleeps 18, is also available to rent. The wife is American, originally from NYC. You might want a travel clock for the bedroom, and I like a big bar of soap for the shower. They provide soap but it's the smaller hotel size. The local pub-restaurant is very good and serves more than pub food - we ate there twice. If you like prehistoric areas - standing stones and Druid rings - there are several only 20 minutes or so drive from the cottage. There is a farm market on the way to Penrith that has excellent fresh vegetables and meat. Their leg of lamb was superb!
Directions:
The archway into the property is not very wide. Our car made it through but it always felt like a tight squeeze.

Overall:
The Cottage was a unique combination of old world charm with modern conveniences. The village of Melmerby is quiet, well located for day trips with an outstanding pub and bakery.
Enjoyed Most:
It was comfortable, and well located.
Enjoyed Least:
No complaints.
Surrounding Area:
The townspeople that we met at the local pub were friendly and very helpful. The food at the pub and bakery was delicious and reasonably priced.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Lake District, Scotland, Penrith for groceries.
Tips or Restaurants:
The Shepherd's Inn! Village Bakery.
