About The Experience

Treat yourself to an experience within the heart of ancient Cortona! Imagine gathering around the long wooden table in the kitchen for breakfast, then stepping just outside the front door of this Tuscany apartment to explore! Feel at home in this self-catering accommodation in Tuscany with modern amenities and elegant furnishings throughout. In the afternoon, you can stop by for a snack and a quick nap before going out for an evening stroll. The fantastic medieval town of Cortona, which is where the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" starring Diane Lane takes place as well as the book it's based off of by Frances Mayes, is yours to wander as long as you like... and for however long you choose, this holiday accommodation in Tuscany will be your home.

Location Description

This apartment is located in the center of Cortona on Via Berrettini, inside the old Etruscan walls. It is situated one block from the church of San Francesco, near the building where Pietro Berrettini (a Baroque painter, architect, and writer) was born. If you walk along via Berrettini, you will reach the highest part of the city, where you can see medieval buildings and alleys all around. You'll find that this city is an encounter with art, history, and culture. You'll rediscover Tuscany's past, which has changed very little in the last 400 years or so. Sitting in the center of the triangle formed by Arezzo, Siena, and Perugia, as well as being near Lake Trasimeno and the Appenines, Cortona is both ideally located for day trips and a sparkling gem of the region. In Cortona there is no end to picturesque streets and amazing historic buildings. Tour frescoed churches from the 13th century; explore the original city walls; see and art exhibit in the 16th century fortress. You can also visit the local museums and libraries, tiptoe around ancient monasteries and tombs dating back to the second century B.C. Dine on the best Tuscan dishes as you look out on an historic palazzo or drive out to one of the villas dotting the countryside. As for shopping, you'll find local handicrafts, antiques, and of course local wines and olive oils that simply outdo anything you've ever tasted!

Customer Reviews

We had a wonderful time and Ivan couldn't have been more helpful and kind.
Enjoyed Most:
We loved Cortona and the property allowed us to actually feel like we were part of the town.
Enjoyed Least:
The hike up the hill was a challenge some of the time.
Surrounding Area:
We rented a car so there were so many close towns that we visited---Siena, Asissi, Spello, etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We certainly walked to Cortona every day to shop, visit the Etruscan Museum which was unbelievable and of course, the coffee shop to get our cappucino.
Tips or Restaurants:
Au Grotto was a favorite of ours in Cortona.
The instructions to meeting someone about how to get to the property were very clear and helpful. The local agency that we dealt with was wonderful. Julie was very helpful since I got the flu on the second day and she helped with sorting out train cancellations and other things.
Check In Out:
Very clear and extremely pleasant experience.

It was a very nice home with an amazing location in old Cortona. The home is fully renovated to present day standards, Bosch gas cook top, easy to operate convection oven, Euro-refrigerator with alot of space, all top of the line appliances including a Bosch clothes washing machine. Towels and linens were clean and fresh, the home was very clean and well appointed. Kitchen has everything a chef would want and I mean everything.
Enjoyed Most:
The kitchen--big long kitchen table right in the kitchen center with a view out the window of the Cortona Valley floor--both by day and then the twinklng lights at night--stunning. We love to buy local and cook every place we travel...a real delight...p.s. no dishwasher but it was not a big deal.
Enjoyed Least:
The location of the home is fantastic but one should know is it's location on one of the very narrow charming streets of old Cortona--very steep by just common day standards--it's a great home but know that if you rent this place you will have to take your time when walking down to the main square and a little bit more time walking back up. We are in very good shape and it was still a pretty darned good workout each time we went out--still we loved the place. All stairs inside are steep but we got used to it after a couple of days.
Surrounding Area:
We had a very nice rental car which we parked on the back entrance but still close by to Cortona. So we were able to drive the local countryside with day trips. Cortona has a very nice piazza where an operatic performance was going on one Sunday with a very nice center strip of stores for shopping and restaurants, also a nice local grocery. You can also walk up the street from No. 23 and walk back out the entry road for a nice flat walk, which we enjoyed immensely.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The only walking distance town is Cortona proper but with GPS you can locate many other small villages--alot of fun to drive the photogenic countryside and see the olive trees, vineyards, old villas and lots of nice little villages. Camucia is the town located right below Cortona and there is a Co-op for a huge grocery ion--excellent meats, veggies, breads, wine and all you need at good prices.
Tips or Restaurants:
Know that you need to be ready for the stairs inside the house--they are steep but doable. If you have trouble with stairs this is not going to be fun. You don't need to bring anything.
We used a GPS to get to Terontola to get the key which is a couple of miles before Cortona. Try and anticipate what time you will get to Terontola to pick up the key. We arrived at noon and it was too early but we went off to eat lunch and drink wine so no worries. So getting to the house is a two part event--try and arrive in the daylight hours if possible. Ivan the owner and Denyse from RentVillas met us with a key and Ivan let us follow him to the house, which was very helpful.
Check In Out:
Ivan the homeowner had the kitchen lightly stocked with juice, meet and cheese, bread and dessert and fresh fruit--it was a tremendous help after finding our way and getting unpacked. Check out was super easy as Ivan came to the house to close us out.

Fantastic! The property was everything we could have hoped for.
Enjoyed Most:
It was a very comfortable and had a homey feel.
Surrounding Area:
Close access to main roads for day trips.
Nearby Events or Locales:
I don't think any town is within walking distance since Cortona is high up on a hill.
Tips or Restaurants:
Cacciatore restaurant was a good find; we ate there twice.
Our directions to the rental office were fine. We followed the girl from the office to about halfway then Ivan (owner) met us and we followed him the rest of way. Yes, we had a GPS.
Check In Out:
No, very easy.
