Location Description

The apartment is situated in a prime location in the center of the medieval hilltop town of San Gimignano, which dates back to the 10th century. San Gimignano is one of the most visited towns in Tuscany and is full of life and things to do. You are steps away from the famous towers, the 12th century Duomo, the People's Palace, and museums dedicated to artwork and archeology. There are also plenty of wine tasting tours, art galleries, shops, and wonderful restaurants. Numerous celebrations and gatherings are held every year including a music festival featuring theater, ballet, and opera performances, and a Medieval Harvest festival where the people of San Gimignano dress up as knights and play medieval games and have tournaments. If you’d like to explore bigger cities in Italy, a local bus can take you to the town of Poggibonsi where there is a train station that can connect you to destinations like Siena, Florence, or Pisa. Cars are not allowed in the historical center of San Gimignano, but it is possible to ask for special permission in order to reach the house and carry luggage. There is public parking outside of the walls.

Nearby Attractions: Castle of San Gimignano, shops, restaurants, art galleries, annual festivals, excavations, Poggibonsi (train station), Siena, Florence, Pisa.

Customer Reviews

Overall:
The location was perfect, both in relation to the town, and to the parking.
Enjoyed Most:
It was very spacious, and in a perfect location.
Enjoyed Least:
We were in the middle of a major heat wave, and there was no air conditioning (as indicated in the property description) and no fan. I had to buy one!
Surrounding Area:
San Gimignano is beautiful. The restaurants and shopping are both great, as is the town itself.
Nearby Events or Locales:
I was right in San Gimignano, and the closest towns were a drive away, but I walked in S. Gimignano every day.
Tips or Restaurants:
Yes. You need to get a local chip in order for your phone to work. I found that out too late to help me, but it could be crucial if a phone is necessary. My laptop was invaluable. The best restaurant was Dorando's and it was spectacular. All were good, but this one was the best by far. Also, bring an English/Italian dictionary. Very few people spoke English. I was surprised.
Directions:
My GPS died. I think it's best to rent the GPS that comes with the car. Directions to and from the car rental area at Florence Airport would help, as it can be confusing. I didn't have the GPS by the time I got most of the way to S. Gimignano, and there were signs. It was Rick Steves' suggestion to park in Parking lots 34 that accidentally got me to the right place. I think you also suggested that. I just remembered what he said because I couldn't read directions while driving, and was somewhat stressed by losing my GPS. It was the car's lighter that was defective.
Check In Out:
Only one. The entrance to the property that is on the piazza is not accessible by renters. You should go in through the gate that is actually in the outside wall of the city. It's right down from the San Mateo Gate, and is always open during the day. The office for the rentals opens off that courtyard, and it's open.

Enjoyed Most:
Great location! Close to the center of the town for shopping, etc. Loved watching the locals, meeting some of them, and getting to chat with them, too. Nice large rooms with a view to the outside wall of the town.
Surrounding Area:
Walking to a variety of places to shop and explore. Very nice area - our first trip to San Gimignano.
Nearby Events or Locales:
No, but there were some areas where locals lived down below the city that were walking distance....also a few restaurants.
Tips or Restaurants:
Good walking shoes - we loved going to the Farmer's Market on Thursday where we were overjoyed to see all the items both food and non-food to purchase.....the whole gamut of food items including fresh fish, meats, and produce...plus a large-sized flea market.
Directions:
Our cab driver took us to the spot. No, we did not have a car. Traveled by bus, and taxi
Check In Out:
We tried to get in touch with the owner regarding our late arrival on Saturday, but were unable to reach him.

Overall:
We had a wonderful experience and once we moved to another apartment in the same building we were enchanted. S. Gimignano 7 was too noisy for us with windows all facing a very busy convenience store on the road. We asked if there was a quieter apartment available and were moved to Le Gardin suite the next day. It was fantastic and even included a outdoor balcony overlooking the courtyard. We loved it.
Enjoyed Most:
The overall location of these properties is ideal as it's just inside the walls of San Gimignano. Once we moved to the quieter apartment we were entirely satisfied. Indeed, delighted.
Enjoyed Least:
Street Noise in San Gimignano 7
Surrounding Area:
San Gimignano is a wonderful walking location. We were enchanted by the ancient town with its narrow cobbled streets and the luminous Tuscan countryside right outside the walls.
Tips or Restaurants:
Dozens of nearby restaurants--Quattro Gatti was a favorite. Avoid the tacky tourist shops and buy at the modern art gallery with the display of San Gimignano in miniature. Their stuff is expensive but truly beautiful and worth taking home.
Check In Out:
Greatly appreciated being able to move easily to quieter apartment at no cost.
