About The Experience
This three-story villa is an old converted mill on the edge of a charming hamlet in the center of historic Normandy, with interior timbers featured throughout the building. Almost an acre of private gardens incorporate a fishable stream (permit required) and expansive terrace.
Location Description

Les Authieux-sur-Calonne’s location makes it an ideal base to explore the coast and countryside of Normandy. A hamlet of quaint timbered buildings is within easy walking distance. The nearby town of Pont l'Eveque, with its lake and convenient train station is only 7km away, which makes it handy for rail trips to Bayeux, Caen, Mont Saint-Michel, Rouen and Paris. It was very lovely and relaxing.
Enjoyed Most:
The beautiful setting with the stream was my favorite.
Enjoyed Least:
The bathtub did not have a regular shower. There was a hand shower but no curtain so it was kind of awkward.
Surrounding Area:
It was so quaint and idyllic.
Nearby Events or Locales:
There was a tiny village in walking distance but nothing was ever open there. We went to Pont L'Eveque for anything we needed and for restaurants.
Tips or Restaurants:
La Popote en Cocotte is great.
The GPS directions took us right there.
Check In Out:
Very smooth, no issues.

Le Moulin de Calonne exceeded our expectations. The manor is an inviting blend of old and new. The house is a jewel in a setting of peaceful verdant green grounds with lovely floral borders and big shade trees and a stream running through that lends itself to life's peaceful pleasures. One can drink in the surroundings, enjoy cheese and wine at one of the three outside tables while visiting with friends and family and thinking to yourself "This is wonderful!" In the house, the rooms are immense and beautifully furnished. Art and decorations appear everywhere to delight the eye. The bedrooms are light-filled giving wonderful pastoral views. The beds are comfortable and large as well as lovely. The person who met us was named Lydie. She is a wonderful person. She showed us where everything in the house was and then showed us where the main supermarket called the Intermarché was located. During our stay there was a petrol strike. Lydie came over and told us where we could get diesel and that the amount we could get would be limited (30 liters) due to the strike. I thought that was awfully nice of her to prepare us for the problem.
Enjoyed Most:
The beauty of the rooms, the high ceilings, the big windows, the stream running through the property, the horse across the road that would run up to the fence to be petted and say hello every time someone was near.
Enjoyed Least:
That's hard to say. The Wi-Fi had a strong signal in the dining room and kitchen but was weak elsewhere. So I guess I would say a stronger Wi-Fi, however we (7) would tend to congregate in the dining room which is lovely and has plenty of seating and that was pleasant as it lent itself to planning and conversation.
Surrounding Area:
The Moulin de Calonne is a great base camp for day trips around Normandy and Brittany. Day trips we took included (1) Monet's house and garden at Giverny, 1 hours by car (2) Honfleur is about hour by car and has a lot to offer in way of charm and dining (3) Trouville-sur-Mer is hour away and has a public beach which is a great place for travelers with children. (4) Mont Saint-Michel is a 2 hour drive and definitely worth a visit. (5) The Normandy Beaches, where the allied landings occurred during WWII are about 1 hours away. We hired a local tour guide who drove us in his van to all the beaches. I'm glad we hired the guide, he was quite knowledgeable on the history of the area. The experience was deep and moving. (6) The tapestry at Bayeux is about an hour by car and worth a visit.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Pont l'Evêque is the closest city and has many nice places to eat.
Tips or Restaurants:
Lydie, the manager for Moulin de Calonne, recommended a restaurant in Beaumont-en-Auge called Le P'tit Beaumont. The restaurant was a fun and lively place. They have set times for dinner with the first sitting at 730 and the last at 930 pm. The starters are done buffet style. That was wonderful as it gave us a chance to sample things we had seen before but didn't know what they were called. The place was packed, our group of 7 would never have gotten seated without a reservation. There is a church across from the restaurant and the church grounds are worth a quick visit. We went to Le P'tit Beaumont at the end of our visit, had we gone earlier we would have gone more than once. The restaurant is about a 20 minute drive. In Trouville-sur-Mer we had lunch at the Tivoli Bistro which was a wonderful little seafood restaurant.
We used a GPS. The directions were fine.
