Customer Reviews

My wife and I had a wonderful stay at Machiavelli. The grounds and view of the countryside were exquisite. Our villa was a great mix of old world charm and modern conveniences and the staff were beyond personable - they were truly friendly, caring and helpful. The location afforded us the opportunity to visit many of the region's wonderful small towns.
Enjoyed Most:
I'd have to give 2 answers here - the staff and views of the countryside. We felt well cared for by the former and transported to another world by the latter.
Enjoyed Least:
The only negative, if you want to call it that, was the road up to the villa. It's quite steep and there are many turns, but after a couple of trips, I felt comfortable with the drive.
Surrounding Area:
The overall landscape is fabulous. Of all the day trips we took, I'd have to say we enjoyed our visit to Volterra the most.
Nearby Events or Locales:
I wouldn't recommend walking to the nearby towns because the roads are so narrow, though we noticed some visitors who did that. The nearest town is Montefridolfi, where we had a great lunch at a local restaurant. The next closest town, which is a bit larger is San Casciano, which we visited several times. We really enjoyed taking advantage of the restaurants and outdoor market there.
Tips or Restaurants:
If you like sitting outdoors, I'd recommend insect repellent so you don't have to worry about getting mosquito bites. All the restaurants that are recommended in the villa brochure were great. The one in Montefiridolfi was real fun! I'd also recommend a trip to Volterra - it was a bit farther than San Gimignano but worth the trip
No, the directions were great. We did have a GPS that helped as well.
Check In Out:
We actually arrived about an hour prior to the official check-in time thinking we wouldn't be able to check in, but the staff was very accommodating and we were able to sneak in before it got too crowded in reception.

Our visit was everything one could hope for in a vacation. Machiavelli - Canonica 1 is near perfect. If you offered a "Most Excellent" review category, I would have checked those for all but the kitchen--which was still pretty good. Sarah and the staff are most helpful and suggested places to go we would not have found on our own.
Enjoyed Most:
Solitude, privacy and a fireplace that made the cool, windy, damp weather an asset. BTW, they provided all the firewood and starter needed. The fact that Canonica I is attached to the castle chapel made it a heavenly experience.
Enjoyed Least:
There was nothing to dislike. (Okay, one 'gripe': The beautiful mountains with their forests, olive groves, vineyards and stately villas on the other side of the valley from Bibione blocked what could have been our view of Florence?). That is a joke!
Surrounding Area:
The exquisite scenery must be seen to understand. Sort of like the Grand Canyon or Machu Picchu. All of the nearby excellent restaurants.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino. Because the castle is set on a high hill and the walk on the narrow road is steep, walking down/up, walking into town is impractical.
Tips or Restaurants:
Maybe I missed it, but, I would let visitors know that almost everything shuts down from about 1 pm to 4:30 pm everyday. Because of the location of the castle, and a vacationer's tendency to a later schedule, we found ourselves driving to town just in time to see the shops close and then had to kill a few hours. Your suggestion to bring plastic bags was most helpful as it allowed us to store the left-over meats, cheeses and breads we bought at the supermercado (COOP) in S. Casciano. We stocked up on wine, cheese, prosciutto, salami, bread and a few staples so we could stay 'home' and enjoy a few home cooked meals. Trattoria del Pesce in Bargino was excellent for fresh fish (the seafood display in the entry had crabs still crawling slowly on ice). A local suggested we drive to Trattoria del Folocare in the little village of Montagnana to try their "Steak Florentine." Most excellent. The two of us split the steak and still had enough left over for another meal. Caffe del Popolana in nearby S. Casciano was very good, also. The fried rabbit was a different treat.
Your directions were clear and precise. Yes, we had a GPS that was useful most of the time (kept forcing us back to the autostrada when we wanted back-roads).
Check In Out:
Again, Sarah made everything so easy there is nothing to improve.

This was a beautiful property and location. It was amazing and an experience to be remembered forever.
Enjoyed Most:
The view and the rustic atmosphere were superb, and the wine-tasting/castle tour was wonderful. The caretakers and all staff were very friendly and helpful. Additionally, the location was perfect for all of our day trips. We were able to see San Gimignano, Siena, Volterra, Greve, Radda and Florence with no more than an hour's drive (at the most).
Enjoyed Least:
There were some annoying bugs...but this is hard to avoid in a rustic dwelling.
Surrounding Area:
I don't know where to start. San Casciano was an inviting and charming nearby town. We loved the restaurant Cantinetta della'Nonna that was there. But the property is not far from any of the wonderful Tuscan towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano was the town that we were familiar with. It's about 5 minutes away driving, not walkable.
Tips or Restaurants:
The caretakers of the estate provide an excellent booklet of information that includes recommendations for restaurants.
