About The Experience
Experience the charms of life in a historic French town at this restored, semi-detached house nestled in the heart of Villeneuve les Avignon, which is close to Avignon. Once the residence of cardinals, the property is close to culture sites, markets, shops and superb restaurants. The town is well known for its local market on Thursdays and its antique market on Saturdays.
Location Description

The village of Villeneuve les Avignon overlooks the Rhône River. Guests can walk to the village on a small path shared with cars. The village has medieval monuments such as the Philippe Lebel tower and the Prieuré cloister, as well as renowned restaurants. Avignon, also known as the popes’ city, is a 5-minute drive away. The town’s formidable Popes’ Palace overlooks the Rhône River plain and the encircled city. Between Villeneuve and Avignon, on the Rhône River, is the island of Barthelasse, which was a refuge for outlaws and deserters in past centuries. Of course, Avignon is also famous for its summer theater festival. The closest highway is the A9, exit Remoulins, a 15-minute drive away. This highway goes from the Spanish border to Orange, with connections for all major cities of southeastern France. The closest train station is at Avignon, which is served by the TGV (Train Grande Vitesse) that goes to Paris in 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Customer Reviews

A truly magnificent villa, providing all the amenities one could wish for. The owner-hosts, Francois and Veronique, have set an incredibly high standard for hospitality. One is almost reluctant to share a review because this is such a special place, emanating hundreds of years of history, but still giving the distinct impression of a beloved Provencal family home that continues into the present time. The surrounding gardens are gorgeously and gently landscaped and highlight the region's unique blend of wild and cultivated. To sum up in one word harmony. Guests staying here will have an abundance of opportunities. They could enjoy the pool, the gourmet kitchen, the nearby town of Villeneuve with its countless cafes and boutiques and markets, or use it as a base to explore Avignon and other cities of Southeast France like Nimes and Arles. Whatever one chooses to do, the villa itself provides an endlessly fascinating sanctuary. The owner-hosts are kind, generous, and happy to share. This is travel as it should be done.
Enjoyed Most:
Pool was super, it had a toilet, bbq grill, ample seating. The kitchen was well equipped. Loved the historical aspect to the property and owners.
Enjoyed Least:
Rather steep driveway to navigate for older folks, and lots of stairs.
Surrounding Area:
Everything. Tons to do and see. Great cafes and boutiques.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Villeneuve les Avignon.
Tips or Restaurants:
Things to bring -ice cube trays. Eat at Restaurant Le 7, at the tennis courts, could we enjoyed our dinners there!
Yes, used GPS but more details would have been helpful (gate code).

Fantastic! François and Veronique are the most wonderful French couple and the most gracious hosts! The swimming pool is to die for! The gardens are lovely! The dog Rocky is a sweetheart!
Enjoyed Most:
That every bedroom was an en suite. And the lovely outside patio and garden area. And the swimming pool.
Enjoyed Least:
Had I known how steep and curvy and single lane the area was, I would've rented an automatic vehicle. And definitely would not rent a bicycle. The pool needs a ladder or a hand railing for entry and exit. It's a very steep first step to get into the pool.
Surrounding Area:
Absolutely everything! The history, the views, the markets, the restaurants, the shops, the city of Avignon, the wineries, the lavender, it was all so beautiful and a wonderful experience!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Villeneuve lez Avignon Is the nearest town and is accessible from the property, if you do not have any mobility issues. We had one member who had become injured on travel and was in a walking boot with crutches. She was unable to walk those hills. Another member had a bad knee and ankle and while she could walk, it was painful after a few hours.
Tips or Restaurants:
Tell them to bring good walking shoes or hiking shoes or boots. And also, to rely on the concierge for transportation when going out as a group to dinner or other activities. The restaurant next to the tennis court was so good we ate there twice! Fantastic, fresh well prepared food! Tell renters to bring some silicone or plastic ice trays to make ice. And you definitely have the concierge do a pre-stock for arrival.

AMAZING!!! Villa Cardinal is such a fantastic property. The gardens are gorgeous, the history of the property is fascinating, would 100 come back here.
Enjoyed Most:
The pool!!! It's beautiful, private and quiet. We also didn't feel like we were disturbing anyone by being loud or playing music.
Enjoyed Least:
The steep hill/driveway getting to the villa! Oof! You get used to it after a while, but it was exhausting getting up that hill on foot. Need a funicular or golf cart to get up on foot. LOL
Surrounding Area:
Restaurant Le 7 was FANTASTIC. Servers were very accommodating and personable.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Villeneuve les Avignon was a great town. Spent more time here than in Avignon. Great gardens, restaurantscafes, shops, market. Loved it!!
Tips or Restaurants:
The guide left to us covered a lot and we did do a lot of the things listed. The villa came with everything that I could have needed.
