Location Description

Castelfiorentino has all the necessities including a train station. Here you can explore the Romanesque-Gothic church of St. Francis (13th century), the Romanesque pieve of Santi Pietro e Paolo, at Coiano (11th century) and the Sanctuary of Santa Verdiana (18th century). San Gimignano—one of the most visited towns in Tuscany—is known for its rich history dating back to the Etruscan times. It is full of life and things to do. Popular attractions include the famous towers, the 12th century Duomo, the People's Palace, and several museums dedicated to artwork and archeology. There are also wine tasting tours, art galleries, shops, and good restaurants. Numerous celebrations and gatherings are held every year including a music festival featuring theater, ballet, and opera performances, and a Medieval Harvest festival where the people of San Gimignano dress up as knights, play medieval games, and have tournaments.

Nearby Attractions: Whether you prefer art, history, culture, regional events, or undemanding relaxation, there is no better locale for exploring Tuscany than the area near Montaione. The charming hilltop town of Montaione, with Etruscan origins, is located in the center of the triangle formed by the historic cities of Florence, Pisa, and Siena, each approximately 50 kilometers away. Here you can enjoy the atmosphere of a typical Tuscan town, shop at the outdoor markets, visit one of the churches, peruse the crafts market for treasures, and pick up your groceries. This is a great location for enjoying the Tuscan countryside, as well as for taking day trips to San Gimignano, Siena, and Volterra, a 30-minute drive away.

Overall:
The villa was wonderful. We had 17 people and we never felt crowded. The kitchen was well supplied and we took advantage of having some groceries brought in which was so convenient. The rooms were large and comfortable. Loved the outdoor spaces and the large dining area in the adjacent building. In short, we enjoyed a memorable week!
Enjoyed Most:
The ability to easily accommodate a large group without feeling crowded. The villa is so well designed which made it a pleasure to stay there.
Enjoyed Least:
The location. It was very difficult to find that first night. On the one hand, the fact it was a relatively secluded, quiet and private location was terrific but on the other hand, we weren't close enough to anything to be able to just run out. Going anywhere really needed to be planned and took more time than we'd anticipated.
Surrounding Area:
The countryside is breathtaking. Every where you looked there was this amazing vista to enjoy. We visited Montaione, Florence, Siena, Lucca and Pisa. We drove through some beautiful old towns on our way to the villa. I guess what was most enjoyable about the surrounding area was that it was in Tuscany!!
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town was Montaione and was not within walking distance. That was a bit of a disappointment.
Tips or Restaurants:
I would recommend future renters take advantage of the special experiences described above. They added so much to our trip and were enjoyed by everyone. If future renters decide to take a winery tour, I'd recommend they get vans with drivers so everyone can enjoy the experience. Casa Emma was very enjoyable. I'd recommend your wine cellar in Montaione. Be sure to allocate enough time to thoroughly enjoy the experience. We arrived late because we had trouble finding the villa so we weren't able to enjoy all the courses. Would have loved to been able to do that. The only thing I'd recommend someone bring is bug repellant.
Directions:
We tried using a GPS but it there were so many problems with it. Finally we had the villa manager meet us and we followed her, probably should have done that sooner.
