Rest your head in one of the most historic – and unique – accommodations in Umbria, just a few minutes away from a quaint local village. This ancient fortress, which now features well-appointed bedrooms in its pentagonal stone tower, combines original construction with modern amenities such as a pool, lovely alfresco dining area and a rooftop terrace that was once a guardsmen’s lookout.

Location Description

The villa is located near the tiny Umbrian town of Capodacqua, in an Apennine Valley between Fosso del Colle and Fosso della Valle di Collelungo. The town center – which is home to a restaurant, bar and grocery store – is a 5- to 10-minute walk away and can be reached on foot along a road with a pedestrian walkway. The medieval town of Assisi is 29 kilometers away. Assisi is home to San Francis birthplace, beautiful basilicas, several other churches and museums. Day trip destinations can include visits to Perugia, Spello, Monte Subasio park and Lake Trasimeno.

Exterior Description

The grounds are housed within a fortress, which contains a chapel, former garrison (now home to a bedroom and the kitchen), pentagonal stone tower (now living and sleeping quarters) and a swimming pool (open May to October) flanked by sunbeds. There are grassy areas with tables and chairs. On the first floor, just outside of the kitchen, there is a terracotta terrace with sun beds, flowers, a barbecue and covered dining area with a table and chairs for 10.

Interior Description

The two main buildings are connected by an external staircase.

Building 1 (Garrison) (Sleeps 2)
Ground Floor: There is one bedroom, which has wheelchair/handicap access to the ground floor, including from the parking area to the room. The bedroom has a large king-size bed (200 cm), wood-beam ceilings, a walnut-and-oak wardrobe, table and chairs, bench, flat-screen TV, telephone, and an ensuite bathroom with late-18th-century tiles, handicap-access shower, sink, toilet and hairdryer. A staircase leads up to the kitchen.
First Floor: The kitchen features a stove, oven, microwave, toaster, Italian coffee maker, American coffee maker and dining table for 10. A staircase leads up to the entrance to the tower.

Building 2 (Tower) (Sleeps 8)
Second Floor: A small door leads into the tower. On this floor there is one bedroom with a large king-size bed (200 cm, it is possible to add another bed), flat-screen TV, mini-bar, large fireplace, church benches from the late 1600s and an ensuite bathroom with a shower, sink, toilet, bidet and hairdryer. A staircase leads to the third floor.
Third Floor: There is one bedroom with a large king-size bed (200 cm), chair and ottoman, flat-screen TV, mini-bar, balcony and an ensuite bathroom with a shower, sink, toilet, bidet and hairdryer. A staircase leads to the fourth floor.
Fourth Floor: There is one bedroom with a large king-size bed (200 cm), sofa, flat-screen TV, mini-bar, and an ensuite bathroom with a shower, sink, toilet, bidet and hairdryer. A staircase leads to the fifth floor.
Fifth Floor: There is a living room with sofas and armchairs, desk with a computer, flat-screen TV, mini-bar, DVD player with a collection of DVDs, balcony and an ensuite bathroom with a shower, sink, toilet, bidet and hairdryer. A staircase leads to the top floor.
Sixth Floor: There is one bedroom with a large king-size bed (200 cm), sofa, flat-screen TV, mini-bar, and an ensuite bathroom with a shower, sink, toilet, bidet and hairdryer. This floor also offers a separate entrance to the rooftop terrace, which is accessible to all guests and does not require bedroom access. The terrace was once a former lookout and offers 360-degree views of the surrounding valley.

Chapel
The restored chapel features wonderful vaults with selected ashlars and part of a 14th-century fresco of the crucifixion which is under restoration.

• Due to the many levels and stairs within this property, except for the “Garrison,” it may not be appropriate for those with walking/climbing difficulties.
• A concierge is available to answer questions during stay.
• The outdoor area can accommodate up to 120 guests for a party or special event.
• Air Conditioning/Heating: All rooms have customizable heating and air conditioning systems.
• All beds have orthopedic mattresses.
• The TV in the living room has Pay-per-view channels in English; the TVs in the bedrooms have local channels only.
