- About The Experience
-
Few properties in Tuscany can boast such beautiful panoramic views of the region’s iconic hills and valleys as this one. The lovingly restored villa has a tower, built in the middle of the 1600s, that was once used as a lookout. Now, five couples will enjoy views of nearby Monterchi, as well as the swimming pool, dining al fresco, and day trips to nearby Arezzo and Cortona.
- Location Description
-
This property is ideally located less than three kilometers from Monterchi, a medieval town that was dedicated to Hercules during the Roman times. Dating back to the year 1095, Monterchi has shops, restaurants, markets, a bank, post office, and several interesting churches. Perhaps the town is most famous for Piero della Francesca’s extraordinary fresco, the Madonna del Parto, painted in 1459 and now displayed in a primary school, also considered a museum. During the summer months, the museum hosts open-air concerts of classical music every Wednesday night on the gardens. Also in Monterchi is a Polenta Festival held every September where visitors can taste local recipes and learn about local traditions. Arezzo, the charming town used as the backdrop for Roberto Benigni's "Life is Beautiful," is about a half an hour drive away and is perfect for a day trip. Once one of the most important Etruscan cities, today Arezzo is beautiful for an array of architecture spanning centuries, from Etruscan ruins to the Roman Amphitheatre and the Medici Fortress. The first weekend of each month brings a popular antique fair, while annually there is a festival called "Joust of the Saracens," where all of the citizens dress in medieval attire and knights representing each part of the city charge at a target representing a Saracen king. The area is also well situated for day trips throughout Tuscany to places such as Cortona, Perugia, and Florence.

Overall:
It was fantastic. Villa was clean and comfortable and the owner Rosado was extremely helpful.
Enjoyed Most:
Ambience and location.
Enjoyed Least:
It did NOT have a dryer...only drying racks.
Surrounding Area:
Small towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Monterchi. Not really...particularly for our group who were all over 60 yrs of age. The walk would have been very long for anyone really.
Tips or Restaurants:
Ice trays. Restaurant in Citerna, a town close by....Belvedere. Fantastic views and food/wine.
Directions:
What GPS system to use and how to enter GPS coordinates into it. Rosado met us at a local bartrattoria in Monterchi and we followed him to the Villa.
Check In Out:
It was easy.

Overall:
Villa Aurora exceeded our expectations for a 2 week vacation in a rustic authentic Tuscan farm house. The house itself, while dating back to the middle ages and 1800's.... had been remodeled inside for comfort but did not lose any Tuscan Charm. The location was outstanding. The nearby town is the real deal. Monterchi is a small village, with medieval architecture but is not crowded with tourist like other larger towns. And the driving proximity to all the popular tourist towns was very easy.
Enjoyed Most:
The host was most accommodating, charming, always checking in for our comfort, and provided many little surprises to make our stay memorable. In addition to hosting our 1st evening meal, he set up a private vineyard tour, and a tour of a near by monastery dating back to Francis Assisi. The property has been in his family for centuries! The house has 5 bedrooms, and accommodated 8 adults with great ease, both indoors and outdoors. The landscaping was kept up immaculately and was truly an extension of the living area. The views were postcard perfect.
Enjoyed Least:
We loved the property, no complaints. However we suggest that the write up be amended to say that the walking distance to town is over 3 american miles. Also, while there is a electric washing machine, there is no electric dryer. So while the Tuscan sun did the trick.... be advised to pack fast drying clothes.
Surrounding Area:
Loved it. Villa Aurora was very accessible to wonderful towns to visit, vineyards, restaurants etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Monterchi is over 3 american miles. Arizzi, was about a 12 hour drive and provided a great train station if needed. And there are many extraordinary Tuscan villages nearby.... most easily accessible for daily excursions.
Directions:
The host made finding Villa Aurora very easy. He met us at an espresso bar on a main road and we followed him to the house. This was a perfect arrangement, because he then gave us a tour of the home and amenities, and explained about nearby food shopping, markets, touring.
Check In Out:
It was very easy to work with Mary Kate at RentVillas. She helped me narrow my choices and found a Tuscan villa that matched my criteria.
She always answered my email questions promptly, and always provided all the information requested information in detail. The host of villa aurora was a perfect in country host.
