About The Experience

Step out from your Provencal rental villa and into the beautiful French countryside… Views from your own private swimming pool look out over olive groves and purple lavender toward the distant mountains. If you want to getaway from the daily hustle and bustle, spend time with your family or a group of friends at this Provencal villa---where you can lounge by the pool, write in your journal or disappear into the nearby villages. For those who crave daily activities, within driving distance are several larger villages and towns…including the beautiful medieval city of Avignon.

Location Description

This villa in Provence is located in the countryside south of France near the village of Saint-Remy-de-Provence. Avignon is a charming walled French city with history, restaurants, museums, shops and a vibrant local scene. There is so much to see; the Place de l'Horloge, the outdoor market in Uzes on Saturday, the Pont du Gard, antique market in Isle sure la Sorgue on Sunday, Mount Ventoux, the vineyards, the Festival d'Avignon in July, and Fountaine de Vaucluse. Worth visiting, Arles has a large two-tiered Amphitheatre. Built in the first century by the Romans, it originally provided entertainment in the form of chariot races and gladiatorial combat. Today it is used for bullfighting (during feria pascale), plays and concerts. On Saturdays there is a large market, one of the largest in Provence, where you can purchase textiles, pottery, art, and local goods. Arles is also the gateway to the Camargue, one of the best natural sites in Europe with an exceptionally rich plant and animal life, famous for their bulls and white horses. In the city of Nimes, there an Amphitheatre that rivals Arles in size that also offers bullfighting. There are numerous museums in Nimes to explore: Musee d’Art Contemporain, Musee Archeologique and Museum d’Histoire Naturelle. If you love gardens, you are sure to enjoy the Jardin de la Fontaine, established in 1750. It is a beautiful composition of fountains, sculpture, grottos, nooks and artful streams of water.

Nearby Attractions:  Saint-Remy-de-Provence, Avignon (restaurants, museums, shops, the Place de l'Horloge market, the Pont du Gard, antique market, Mount Ventoux, vineyards, Festival d'Avignon, Fountaine de Vaucluse), Arles (Amphitheatre, market), Camargue, Nimes (Amphitheatre, Musee d’Art Contemporain, Musee Archeologique, Museum d’Histoire Naturelle, Jardin de la Fontaine)./

Enjoyed Most:
Very comfortable, lovely view, surrounded by its own olive grove and herbs. Immaculately clean and well kept. The pool is lovely but we didn't have the best weather for it in October.
Enjoyed Least:
The pillows and the beds were firm (a European issue, often.)
Surrounding Area:
The boulangeries and lovely, friendly townspeople. Fluency in French didn't hurt. Great food and so central to many sites and great drives.
Nearby Events or Locales:
St Remy de Provence; driving less than 5 minutes.
Tips or Restaurants:
-Industrie-- great food, great place to watch an Olympique match; Mas Valentine -- just down the hill, fabulous food and service ; Le table de Nicholas the boulangerie next to the church is the one. The one in St Etienne-de-Gres is the most amazing in the neighbourhood. And right across the street is an organic fruit and vegetable epicure, fruit for your merengue!
The key is to keep looking for the GREEN bin-- the rest on the road are grey with green lids! Not that hard to find. The daunting sounding directions off the main road are really easy.
Check In Out:
Easy, and very warm. We were met by Chantal, with goodies. But no, they speak NO English. I speak French, but i am sure sign language would have worked. They went away to Spain, but had a friend available to help us with things, whom we called on and came right away. We felt very well looked after.

Absolutely fantastic! We were made to feel very welcome with basics already in the fridge and cabinets such as butter, bread, jam, olive oil, milk, and coffee. A beautiful villa and surroundings.
Enjoyed Most:
Probably the fantastic view and beautiful gardens full of blooming lavender and other flowers. Having a beautiful pool and a covered patio for dinners were also a big plus! Also very nice to have access to a washer and dryer. They also supplied hair dryers and fans in the bedrooms, though the nights were comfortable and their were NO mosquitoes.
Enjoyed Least:
The couple that showed us around the property did not speak any English and we did not speak French! It would have been helpful to have instructions for basic things such as how to operate their oven, other appliances, where to take the trash and recycling, etc written down in English. We did manage for the most part.
Surrounding Area:
Excellent spot for day trips! We not only went into St. Remy en Provence 5 minutes away, but to Avignon, Pont du Gard, Les Baux-de-Provence, L' Isle sur la Sorgue, Gordes, Roussillon, and Les Baux-de-Provence!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Saint Remy en Provence was about a 5 minute drive away, with lovely cafes, restaurants, and shops.
Tips or Restaurants:
It is a bit tricky to find. Mostly because the two small stone signs on the ground were almost hidden by tall grasses! It is a long drive up before you make a hairpin turn to the right and head down the drive to the villa. You can't go wrong eating in St. Remy, though we mostly ate lunch out on our day trips and ate light dinners at the villa. The markets in the villages are wonderful! Bring wash cloths or a loofah as they only provide one bath towel per person, but do supply pool towels.
It is tricky getting out of Avignon, but once you are on the road to Saint Remy, you are fine. They need to make the stones marking the turn into the drive to the villa larger and more noticeable.
Check In Out:
The language barrier was the only issue.

The house is beautiful and charming the bright yellow colors of the well-equipped kitchen, the marvelous covered outdoor patio, and the grand vistas of the Alpilles, to say nothing of the fabulous swimming pool, combined to make it a marvelous experience. The owners are gracious hosts who were kind enough to equip us with the first-night essentials including wine upon our arrival. We would gladly return, although we would probably choose another month other than August, very fine weather notwithstanding, due to the crowds in the towns -- it seemed half of Paris was in Provence this year. Provence is great fun - my first time there, even though I have spent substantial time in France and very beautiful. I don't think the photos on your site convey the beauty of the scenery.
Enjoyed Most:
The kitchen, the outdoor patio, the wonderful views, the swimming pool.
Enjoyed Least:
The beds are not the most comfortable in the world, but my experience tells me that comfy USA-style king-queen beds are not as much of a must-have item in many EU countries. My wife and I did just fine with the double bed. You may want to check with the owners re the bicycles, because we did not see them when we were there.
Tips or Restaurants:
The supermarche on the north end of town is open on Saturdays until at least 7 PM in the summer, and the boulangerie just before the market seems to be open on Sunday mornings. And I only wish I had a supermarket this good in the USA. One MUST have a rental car for this property.
