Customer Reviews

This was our annual family vacation so the important parts of the experience had more to do with the people than the place.
Enjoyed Most:
One of the main reasons we picked this particular property was for the history that surrounds it. The rooms were spacious and the outside dining area was nice.
Enjoyed Least:
The castle needed a good cleaning. The main kitchen was small, and really not adequate for feeding and cooking for such a large group. The driveway caused issues for those in our party with limited mobility. Getting the luggage to and from the car and the castle was challenging. It's unfortunate that the windows in the bedrooms don't have screens. You think you are renting a castle to stay in, but in reality you are renting parts of a castle to stay in. There are parts of the castle that are locked and off limits. It's more like several properties stuck together. There are three separate entrances to the various rooms. It's more like attached homes.
Surrounding Area:
The area surrounding the castle was beautiful and tranquil. Monte San Savino was a wonderful little town with great restaurants and three good grocery stores. At least one of which is open on Sunday mornings. The castle is within a short driving distance of many of the surrounding beautiful hilltop towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Ciggiano is the nearest town. It's within walking distance, but there isn't much more than a convenience store there.
Tips or Restaurants:
I would definitely recommend bringing lots of bug repellent. We got pizza twice from one restaurant in Monte San Savino, called Il Pecadora. It was delicious. Giovanni, the caretaker took us to the local butcher to get steaks one night, and a friend recommended a local organic farm/restaurant where we had dinner and farm tour one evening. It's called Podere Il Casale, in Montalcino. The owners are very interesting people, the food was great, and the views are breathtaking. It's about an hour drive from the Castle, but well worth it. The stable where we went horseback riding is called La Fogliarina. It seemed to be run by a mother and daughter. We had all levels of ability and they managed to make the riding fun for all of us. They are located about a 10 minute drive from the Castle. I also wouldn't advise having the caretaker purchase the "pre-stocking" groceries. If you're arriving on Saturday, stop at a market on the way and pick up a few items, or go Sunday morning as we found the main grocery store was open until 1:00 pm on Sunday.
We did use GPS to find the Castle.
Check In Out:
The check in and check out process was simple.

Overall, everyone had a fantastic time. The area was spectacular, the accommodations were good, and the owners and caretakers very accommodating.
Enjoyed Most:
The view was spectacular. It really did not get any more relaxing than sitting poolside every evening and enjoying cocktails and appetizers. For an old castle somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 years old, the bedrooms were well maintained. However, people looking for luxury and new age convenience should take heed: the place shows its age in places.
Enjoyed Least:
The showers in the bathrooms in most cases were inadequate by American standards. Often just a hose attached to a shower head... very small and cramped. And hot water was at a premium. Some guests may find the fact that the caretaker lives on site to be discomforting, but he was quiet and only appeared on request. Also, he was very helpful providing things we were missing. Particularly on the weekend, as the castle apparently has some historical significance, our stay was interrupted by people wandering on to the property to take photos of the castle, not realizing it was private property.
Surrounding Area:
The view was spectacular, the people were friendly, the prices very reasonable, and the food was excellent. Siena, Lucignano, Monte San Savino, Montepulciano were all a short driving distance away.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Ciggiano is literally fifty feet from the gate. But there is nothing there. Monte San Savino is the closest town with services 3.5 miles away - and a 45-minute walk to the Post Office/Bank/Supermarket/Gelateria. 5 miles from the Old Walled Town.
Tips or Restaurants:
1. A word of warning the driveway is dirt and stone, and extremely steep. I would not recommend having a manual transmission if you are a novice. It is extremely difficult to navigate. 2. La Terrase was an excellent restaurant, but really you could not go wrong anywhere. 3. Most EVERYTHING is closed on Sunday, so Saturday arrivals should stock up at the supermarket.
Directions were adequate but required a leap of faith in that the directions specify something to the effect of "get off the exit,go left, and past the first light follow the sign to Albergo..." The problem is, that first light does not come up for quite some time, maybe five minutes of driving through neighborhoods, causing one to second guess themselves a bit.
Check In Out:
Caretaker was at the house when we arrived and provided a tour of the facilities. Owners were very friendly and accommodating. Checkout was a breeze.
