Customer Reviews

Overall:
We loved it. We were 6 woman so we bought local fare and cooked in our big kitchen.
Enjoyed Most:
The surrounding landscape.
Surrounding Area:
The lack of tourists. We felt we got a very satisfying slice of Italian life.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Baccaiano. We didn't have a car so we walked the 1k hilly distance several times.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring your cards and your sense of humour and a willingness to chill and enjoy the atmosphere. Bring bug spray for mosquitoes.
Directions:
I'm sure we were the only fools staying there who were using the bus. It would have been helpful to have had the schedule in advance, as it was difficult to obtain once we were there.
Check In Out:
I thought Sarah at RentVillas was a great help as was the check-in lady.

Overall:
Overall we had a very good experience.
Enjoyed Most:
Location and views.
Enjoyed Least:
We were plagued by mosquitoes and gnats. We all left covered with bites. Reception told us as we were leaving that they had bug spray. It would have been nice if they had told us as we were arriving. Found the kitchen could have had better lighting.
Surrounding Area:
Scenery.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Baccaiano is within walking distance
Tips or Restaurants:
Bug spray if you are visiting during the summer months.
Directions:
Used a GPS and had no problems.
Check In Out:
Check in went smoothly.

Frances, June

Overall:
Wonderful. A magnificent castle with out-buildings in beautiful countryside. We rented 5 units - all in the out-buildings. I entered the same comments for all 5 units.
Enjoyed Most:
The old castle is from a movie set. Beautiful. The out-buildings are tastefully blended in.
Enjoyed Least:
Kitchens were a little primitive, but quite adequate. The in-house restaurant seemed expensive.
Surrounding Area:
The views and the clean air.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Montagnana was about a 15-minute easy walk.
Tips or Restaurants:
Eating out or eating in cooking are both good options.
Directions:
There are 2 entrances to the estate. One is easier than the other. Look around.
Check In Out:
Keyholder is in the out-buildings after hours.

Michael, April

Overall:
Excellent! Perfect for 2 couples!
Enjoyed Most:
Its location...set aside from the castle, made it feel more like a private villa.
Enjoyed Least:
Wish it had more outdoor space. It had a small table at the entrance way that was perfect for us, but would have been nice to have more space.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Baccaiano has great restaurants. You can walk...but recommend driving. Its a bit of a hike back up. Montagnana is closer, but did not have an open restaurant when we tried to go.
Tips or Restaurants:
It was a great villa! Perfect for home-cooked breakfasts. In Baccaiano, Il Mezzo Maraniao restaurant was pricy but amazing. Baccaiano's local pizza place was fabulous as well!

Overall:
Excellent.
Enjoyed Most:
Great location, lovely castle, excellent pool, very helpful staff, nice restaurant with good chef and service.
Enjoyed Least:
Beds in our house were not very comfortable. They changed one mattress but not much better.
Surrounding Area:
Lovely walks along local quiet roads, watching the fireflies at night. Good distance from Florence and Siena etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Baccaiano - a cute village with good 'alimentari' and bread shop. Your coud walk 10 minutes down to it, and 15 back. A hot walk in the afternoon, though.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a sun hat in summer. GPS in the car helps. Good art museum in Montespertoli.
Directions:
Easily found without GPS.
Check In Out:
Helpful staff.

Ralph, June

Overall:
Fantastic property - plan to stay again next trip.
Enjoyed Most:
The views and the close proximity to the castle and other Tuscan towns.
Enjoyed Least:
You can hear everything through the walls but we had no problems with that.
Surrounding Area:
Beautiful picture-perfect-postcard towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Montagnana is within easy walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Buy a good chopping knife and flexible cutting boards. Definitely buy a good road map if renting a car.
Directions:
If you drive from Florence as we did you avoid the Autostrada A1 and take the Fi-Pi-Li highway Florence, Pisa, Livorno and exit Ginestra Fiorentina.

Marian, October

Enjoyed Most:
Location
Enjoyed Least:
Number of units on the property. There are a lot of units on the property for the community space and the size of the pool. It was great for meeting people, but didnt have the best feel as far as privacy.
Surrounding Area:
Nearby towns, location to Florence, Pisa etc.

Melissa, July

Enjoyed Most:
The views were fantastic! The restaurant was also very good, but very expensive about 25 Euros each. We enjoyed going around the castle grounds, to the beautiful gardens and even picked some fresh limes to make limeade. I would definitely return to the property again despite a couple of issues I had.
Enjoyed Least:
Our apartment is a split level, which we didn't know when we rented it. One of travelers is somewhat disabled and we were also travelling with a two-year-old, which made for complicated sleeping arrangements. Also, our bedroom shared the kitchen wall with the apartment next to us, whose guests got in every night at midnight and woke up at six a.m. That wasn't great. Be sure that if you feel your radiators are on to tell the property management. We didn't know the apartment was being heated, we didn't ask for it, but they got us confused with another apartment who did. We ended up having to pay for a week of heating we didn't want or ask for.
Surrounding Area:
The location is great for day trips to small towns like San Gimignano and Siena. Rent a car -- we did and it was perfect. In good weather, we just drove through the hillside to take in the views. I'm bummed we missed the Prada outlet which was nearby.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Baccaiano is right down the hill and has a couple of small food shops and a decent cafe for pastry in the mornings. You can walk down the hill, but it's a trek back up.
Tips or Restaurants:
Rent a car, again -- it's the only way to really see things. It's about a 45 minute drive into Florence, but you can park your car at an excellent underground parking lot near the train station and then walk around. Buy a road map of Italy at a roadside stop. The roads are seldom marked as they are in the U.S. so you won't see something that says I-45, it helps to have a frame of reference for day trips.
Check In Out:
You might want to let people know there is a definite cut off time the staff will leave. Although the staff was anticipating our late arrival, we got very lost on the way to the property and caught the property manager as she was walking to her car.

Overall:
The apartment is actually on the second floor (for American's). On the main floor are 2 bedrooms, 1 king bedroom and 1 twin-bedded room, as well as the kitchen area - all with large windows that open up to an amazing views. Also on the main floor are both bathrooms with showers. Up 2 steps - for those who have children or elderly parents - there is another double bedroom with a small window. Then upstairs is another twin bedded room with a very small window - perfect for children. I believe that out of all the outbuildings, this one has the most amazing views.
Enjoyed Most:
The views are magnificent. The pictures on the website do not do the castle and it's outbuildings justice. Three main windows opened up to the most picturesque views ever. Being in an outbuilding still allows you to roam the public areas of the castle. It seemed every corner you turned you discovered something new and amazing.
Enjoyed Least:
The castle has banquet capabilities so it may cater to larger crowds. The downside was there was a very large, extremely noisy wedding party staying there the week we stayed. The noise was not an issue during the day; however at night, the wedding guests made it a habit to retire quite late.
Surrounding Area:
The area is magnificent. There are tiny towns that surround the area, but yet it is only about a 25 minute drive from the center of Florence.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Baccaiano was within about a 15-minute walk down the hill. It is a very small town. Montespertoli is only about a 10 to 15 minute drive from the castle. Its a little larger town that has a small COOP for groceries. It has a small town center where the locals fill the streets late in the evening.
Tips or Restaurants:
Make sure to do your grocery shopping on Saturday before the COOP closes. It is not open on Sundays. Also, only one dish towel is provided, so you may want to bring an extra. You'll need basics such as dish soap, salt and pepper and napkins. There are regular beverage glasses and coffee cups. However, surprisingly since you're in wine country, there were no wine glasses.

Overall:
It was a really great place to stay to visit Florence and the surrounding hill towns in Tuscany. However, the castle had so much to offer you could be happy to just remain on the grounds.
Enjoyed Most:
We enjoyed the stunning charm of the castle and the evenings were enchanted. It was nice to feel so much history and character at the place we were staying. We were inspired to sketch the castle grounds as were other visitors. The kids loved the pool.
Enjoyed Least:
We should have brought mosquito netting for the beds since we had the windows open at night to let in the nice fresh air.
Surrounding Area:
There were beautiful views of sprawling vineyards and olive groves. We enjoyed shopping for food at the markets in Motespertoli. Of course, visiting Florence by bus was very convenient.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Their was a little town with a bar within walking distance, but you need to drive to get to Montespertoli.
Tips or Restaurants:
We only ate a couple times at the Castle because we were able to prepare wonderful meals in our kitchen.
Check In Out:
The only hitch was we had to wait till 5 PM for our place to be available after cleaning.

Bruce, June

Overall:
Really enjoyed this place. Already have recommended this place to family and friends and would love to return!
Enjoyed Most:
This castle was cool. We were actually in an outbuilding, but we were able to tour many of the rooms in the castle! The owners have done a nice job blending the original architecture and furniture and some modern features and furnishings. The location was ideal -- within 30 minutes of downtown Florence and many of the neat villages and towns, yet set in the idylic Tuscan countryside.
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing significant comes to mind, but I think the spring or the fall would be the best times to visit , since there is no air conditioning or window screens.
Surrounding Area:
There are many neat things to see and do. If you have kids, go to Vinci, which is 30 minutes away, near Empoli, and check out the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci. San Gimignano is another neat town, with several towers, which you can climb -- try to time your climb for the sunset so that you have a fantastic view of the surroundings and amazing Tuscun colors. And you have to drive through the Chianti wine country.
Nearby Events or Locales:
While the property is technically in a small town, its only feature was the Church associated with the Cardinal who built the Castle. There are two small towns nearby -- one downhill, one uphill -- within walking distance. Both have small grocery stores and restaraunts. We liked the grocery store in Montagnana, but went to the COOP grocery store in Monterspertoli, a 5-minute, drive for most of our needs.
Tips or Restaurants:
If you want to go to the Uffizi Museum, book your tickets well in advance. We didn't and the staff was unsuccessful in booking tickets for us -- it is sold out weeks in advance. As an alternative, we went to the Pitti Palace and were able to get immediate tickets! The property manager can book a Tuscan pasta class which meets on Thursdays, 16 Euros. I had a blast and really enjoyed it. One of these ladies also offers a full day Tuscan food class on Friday for 100 Euros. I wish I had had time to take it. The town where the classes are given is about 45 minutes away. We really liked Greve in Chianti, a town about 45 minutes away. Awesome Pizzaria and overall, a neat village with a wine tasting place on the south end of town. It took 45 minutes to drive there. Please note - the castle has no TV's, and a single public phone. The on-site restaraunt is a bit pricy for a family and is only open for dinner and closed on Tuesdays, so your alternative is buying food to prepare.

Enjoyed Most:
Large, comfortable rooms. We were very pleased with the helpful and friendly staff. There is a grocery store open every day. Also, there is a full restaurant and bar open 6 days a week at the castle, so it is possible to dine there on a regular basis. A credit card or Euros are accepted. Also, bus service is available to Florence daily - very nice way to travel! There is always an English-speaking staff member on duty.
Enjoyed Least:
Dim lighting and cold. No clothes dryer. Bring an umbrella - it rained every day.
Surrounding Area:
Beautiful and serene, near many wonderful places to visit. It was within walking distance of Baccaino.

Lynda, May

Enjoyed Most:
It was so peaceful and quiet.
Enjoyed Least:
I can think of nothing!!!!
Surrounding Area:
Lovely Tuscany surroundings
Nearby Events or Locales:
We had a rented car, so no problems.

Torbjorn, May

Overall:
We absolutely loved Montegufoni.
Enjoyed Most:
It is very clean and has an incredible surrounding landscape.
Surrounding Area:
Great proximity to Florence.
Nearby Events or Locales:
It is particularly close to Florence as well as all of the Tuscan countryside.
Tips or Restaurants:
I would definitely go back.
